but, you know what, it comes in cycles. they can still with a 66-29 flurry at the end of the season finish 500. >> johnny: right. >> rob: that is when you look at numbers and you have to start with small goals. try to win series. obviously we are not going to win this series against the reds. but when you go down to tampa, say we have to take two out of three. go up to new york and try to take two out of three. start small with your goals and build upon that. i think one of the smaller goals that this team has had over the last few weeks try to get -- weeks is try to get better pitching and they have. they brought in steve mccatty. the starters have been stronger. the bullpen is much stronger than it was. we showed the graphic last night and that is a small goal that you have accomplished. now you have to get the offense on board. work on the defense every day you can. things can always turn around for a ball club and can always turn sour for another ball club. >> johnny: in your 7 years in

the big leagues pitching, was that the biggest challenge you had was getting over losses and focusing on the next game? >> rob: i never had a problem getting over losses because i'm still not over them. [laughter]. >> rob: you never get over bad outings or losses. you learn to accept them and move on. and use them to build and make yourself into a stronger athlete and in this profession, you are going to have a lot more failure than success. look at the hall of fame hitters as the ball gets by nieves right there. runner moves up to second. >> johnny: it is a wild pitch charged to john lannan. >> rob: that curve ball rolls up his arm and then over his head. the hall of famers failed 7 out of 10 times. and to me, i always look at that. i will take those percentages. if i'm successful 7 out of 10, 8 out of 10 times i get to stay in the major leagues. you can't try to think you are

who were your clubhouse leaders rob playing with cincinnati? >> rob: we had a bunch. it was a great clubhouse to be a part of for 7 plus seasons there. eric davis was wonderful. he would never let you feel satisfied. he was just on your back to try to better yourself. tom browning. obvious lyly paul o'neal and chris. they had their own little language. >> johnny: but that was a veteran team, wasn't it? >> rob: a lot of veterans. >> johnny: dukes has a bead on it and one down. >> rob: nice jump on that ball by dukes. very difficult to get a jump on a ball sometimes when you see the swing and looks like it was hit very hard and all of a sudden it is about 20 feet behind 2nd base. toughest part of a reed for centerfielder or any outfielder. >> johnny: and he can fly with

the best of them. willy taveras will step in. lannan delivers inside for ball one. >> rob: the thing about our clubhouse leaders, it wasn't just that. we all hung out together. it wasn't clicky at all. i'm not saying it is here. they are just a lot younger in the clubhouse. but if there was a barbecue, the whole team went. even the coaches and trainers. if we were going to have an adult beverage, 20 out of 25 guys went. some guys, they took too much of the game home. they would go home with a bat and sit there in front of a mirror and swing all night if they had an 0-4. nothing wrong with that. they are just trying to better themselves that way. it was a family. and i have said that for 2 months. when they become a family, they will know it. and look out because the other teams are going to be in big

leads off and the nats have a runner on. that will bring up alberto gonzalez who walked back in the 1st inning. >> rob: i think the second trip through, now they know what micah owings is featuring, which isn't much. 90 miles an hour fastball. got a bit of a tail to it. decent curve ball and decent change-up. nothing they shouldn't be able to handle in the next few innings. >> johnny: hairston sneaking in from 3rd base. pitch is taken for a called strike. alberto battled back on the opening day roster. >> rob: when he was here at the beginning, he had a long swing. he was trying to hit every ball a long way and he's cut down on the swing. he is putting balls in play. he is using his speed to get some singles and downs. he is playing some outstanding shortstop or 2nd base when he is in the game. that is what i'm sure manny acta and mike rizzo expected out of this young man.

base. we h the mt of the order coming up withcoring position. >> johnny: ryan zimmerman up for the second time today. he is 0-1. flew out to left field to jonny gomes back in the first. on the gun, 87 that time for micah owings. >> rob: getting back to even 1990 when we won the championship, we were 5th place in '89. we weren't a very good team and that was coming off four second place finishes. when you get your lunch handed to you enoug times you get a little bitter andyou larn from it. and you say i don't like that feeling too i don't like ling. not many of these guys on the field for t nationa have at too many levels.

we were just talking about adam dunn. best high school football player down in texas. these guys aren't used to losing. johnny: two balls and a strike. adam dunn is on deck. >> rob: there's not a man in there >> ray: including the coaching staff, trainers, anybody in the front office, nobody wants to lose. it is the last thing you are out there to do is lose a ballgame. >> johnny: 2-1 count. one away and guzman down at second. breaking ball is high. and it is 3-1. >> rob: one thing i have to say for this team, they have never quit one time. even last night. down 2-0 after a two-hour delay come back and tie it up. you can't say that this team doesn't have heart. they may not have enough players right now.
