8:34 pm

>> great hit on hand. including phil mickelson. back for the first time since his wife's breast cancer diagnosis. mickelson's start on the back nine. this is his approach on the par 4, 10th. his first hole of the day. not a bad start. >> john daley back after i a six-month suspension. lost over 60 pounds. feeling good. talking the game and playing the game early on. he would birdie that and go to one under. daley forced to go to the drop zone. and a great recovery from the drop zone. he would bogie the hole.
8:43 pm
brian gay is at the top of the leaderboard. jose maria ole thawbal. and goosen shot 68's today. >> i got off to a great start. made a few, i guess, one really poor shot i drove in the water on 18 and made double. made a couple of birdies coming in, made good putts, gives me momentum for tomorrow. wasn't a great round, but it was a great start. i enjoyed playing. had a great pairing, padraig harrington and cameron beckman are such nice guys. we had an enjoyable round, and was able to hit a few good shots. and kind of get away a little bit. it will be nice to enjoy a little vacation before we start
8:44 pm
our treatment, too. >> it was almost like treatment for him to play after his wife's situation. what's it like to be around phil right now? >> that clip you just played was interesting. i was standing there and now hearing it again. he sort of segued right from golf to the vacation he was going to take with his family. so to me that sort of signifies that he's not totally into this, which is completely understandable. you know, half of his head is in golf, and half of his head and maybe a lot more is thinking about his wife, amy, and the treatments they're going to start shortly after july 1st. so it's pretty clear to me. he's here, he's giving it his best. he's trying. but understandably so, i'm not sure his heart is 100% into golf this week. >> he's here to tune-up to play at beth page black next week. do you think there's anyway that he can go to the u.s. open and win with the state of mind he's in right now? >> well, sure. he's still phil mickelson, he
8:45 pm
still has that splend did game, he could get drafted behind the fans in new york, and get drafted behind all that excitement and his play. but it, you know, it's going to be really hard, i would think. he's phil, but these are extraordinary circumstances. it would be a fantastic story, but i'm not sure even he could pull this off. >> it would be a wonderful scene if he could be in contention next week. the other biggest name or biggest story at the st. jude classic, the return of john daley after a six-month suspension. he's lost all that weight. seems to be humble. seems to have found his game on the tour. what's it like for him out there on day one? >> this is almost like a homecourt for him. he's from arkansas, it's just up the road. he's played in this tournament a
8:46 pm
thousand different times. so he was well received here. his game is still a little off. especially with putting, i'm sure you saw from the highligh highlights. he's been putting on the greens in europe, and now he comes over here. but something that was differe different. he didn't do that. he got up-and-down for his bogie. even though he putted poorly and finished 2 over. he went right to the range and to the putting green after the round, which is also something a little different. the old john daley might have blown it off, gotten in the car and been on his way. so there are signs that maybe he understands this is his last chance, and signs of maturity that he really does want to get better and play better on this tour. >> all right, starting in june for him, a lot of the things he will be playing will be on
8:47 pm
sponsors exemptions. what will be his goals the rest of the season? >> i think he wants to play good golf and sort of prove to people that he's not this high risk character anymore. that sewer say sponsor and you're having doubts whether or not to invite him to the tournament because you're not sure he'll withdraw on you or embarrass your tournament. he's trying to convince you he's worg the trouble. and trying to convince the golf fan in general, and maybe even his peers that he's sort of turning the battleship around. it's going to take a while. but i think slowly but surely he has a chance to do that. i'm still skeptical, but i like what i saw today. >> all right, espn dot com's sr. national columnist, you're always worth the trouble. thanks for joining us. >> okay, take care. bye-bye. >> okay, you too. >> baseball, rubber game at shark stadium. that's what they call the game in miami now. cardinals-marlins. if you've seen albert pujols
8:48 pm
you'll seen one thing, a see ya. ninth jack of the season. 1 for 4, down .317. top 8, pinch hitter, kobe ras muss. wins it 6-5. bang, bang, bang, highlights over. an error by ross that brought in two runs. that game is tied. he said i missed it. went right for my legs, there's no excuse. >> pirates and braves. this is a highlight. pittsburgh got two hits in eight innings. taking over the national league lead. pirates up 3-1. three hits off raphael soriano in the ninth. now it wouldn't be a braves highlight without a bobby crsm
8:49 pm
ox ejection. doesn't agree with the call. there goes the hat, and there goes the skipper. the all-time leader in that. of they finish their nine-game homestand in 4 and 5. and they'll visit baltimore tomorrow in interleague play. >> san francisco giants looking for the errors. jonathan sanchez, bottom third. justin up and outton. number 12 on the year. d-backs win a pitching duel. 2-1 is your final. his longest outing of his career, four starts this season. allowing no earned runs. jonathan out for him. 0-6 on the road this season. he is 2-0 at home. >> still to come, the world's best soccer player may have a

brand-new team. you won't believe how many millions ofs it might take to millions ofs it might take to get him there. this is matt. last year, matt went on the bud light port paradise cruise. it was awesome. for four days and three nights, matt soaked it all in. ( whooping, cheering ) i had the ship up to like 100, 100 miles an hour. and matt learned a lot about cruise ship protocol. for obvious reasons, we're protecting matt's identity. i didn't invite my girlfriend. sorry, tracey. you're an idiot. yep. bud light port paradise. it's the most fun you might never want to talk about.

>> major soccer news. real madrid breaking the bank for superstar, manchester united accepted. real madrid's world record, 31 million dollars transfer offer for the rights to cristiano ronaldo. and that is just to talk to the world player of the year about a new contract. doesn't even get him there. this is just after real madrid signed kacaw. this is not the brazillian ronaldo. this is the cristiano ronaldo from portugal. led him to two titles two seasons ago in the premiership, and the champions league. is he worth it? >> they will pay $131 million for the right to sign ronaldo. keep that in mind. he now has to agree personal terms. real madrid are on a spending spree. they're spending all kinds of money. is he worth it?
8:54 pm
i don't think any player is worth that kind of money. certainly he can change a game for you. he's a very talented player. he's going to be fitting in on a very talented team. there is no question that real madrid are going to be much better with him? but $131 million? i don't think so. >> you got to love tommy. >> tommy worldwide celebrity. he gets mobbed everywhere he goes around the world. true story. as part of the deal, part of the money may go to the player himself and any agent involved in the deal. but that's $136 million english pounds in the transfer fees to go to kaka. you can see, fourth larngest transfer fees in history. >> you get your name on that thing, it's the greatest summer of your life. >> now it's anyone's game. >>

he improves to 16-42. still no other team in the majors has less than 25 wins. >> you saw this just a few moments ago here on espnews. usain bolt running the 100 meter in toronto. first time he's run in a competitive race in 2009. bolt starts off behind. but as he always seems to do, charges ahead. looks around. peace, thanks for coming. wins again. 10.25 is the second title. he runs it in ten seconds flat. still to come, c.c. sabathia. throwing darts at fenway. but, hey, don't sleep on brad penny, folks. top story's on the
