5000 westerners. but we the western countries, i don't want to mention the name of your former president anymore, but he has killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in iraq. so what about that? and we just forget it. we talk about the muslims who kill for 5000 people, and that is based it was brutal. >> you're talking about 9/11 now write lex. >> yes. it's terrible, but this former administration killed -- there are independent reports from british research institute, they estimate that one in 1 million iraqis have been killed. who is talking about that? nobody. we are much more violent than
7:31 pm
7:32 pm
>> that is very intelligent. he is ready to give more import to the civil reconstruction in the afghanistan. but i feel that he is making one mistake. he wants to the send 17,000 more troops to afghanistan and to increase the war against the taliban and al-qaeda. i would just tell him that i am one of the germans who -- i went to berlin in july last year. he came to berlin. you saw it on tv. i was one of the 200,000 people
7:33 pm
who came there. i said, yes, we can like all the americans. i was quite close to him. fantastic shoulders. and there was one thing i didn't like and one thing i'd like to a lot in this speech. the part i didn't like was when he said i've will increase the troops in afghanistan. won a famous german tv editor rid me an e-mail. gave applies to everything, but to afghanistan. but there was something fantastic. tell him. sixty years ago our pilots flew
7:34 pm
over berlin, and they made something was greater than in a victory. they've won the hearts of the germans and the people of berlin because they didn't drop bombs. they dropped food and candies for ethical, nkful, grateful ch. and he said, that is the way to win people. i was one of these children. baghdad -- i got american candies. it is true, i got american chocolates. we had nothing after the war. and i got american chocolate. i became a friend of this country. i would say, you won the hearts of the germans. by giving food and giving candies too grateful people.
7:35 pm
>> and there is a chance. and i would say, by the way, you will win the hearts, but you will never win the war in afghanistan. nobody has one of war in afghanistan in the long run. alexander the great, the mongols, the british, the russians. wind ship another hundred, 200, 500 -- y another 5,000 or 10,000? i believe he is not completed decided. and i hope and i would like to tell him please don't make this war a new iraq. this is what i am hoping. i am hoping when he spoke in berlin the day after everybody
7:36 pm
was enthusiastic. it was, in berlin, like a festival. everybody was happy. i called an american friend of mine. he owns a big, great american newspaper. we vote for him. we made it. of course. the germans weren't allowed to vote. impressive. when he was just right now for the 16th anniversary in u.s. trade. impressed everybody. people feel that this man is not only cool, but he is also a heart. sometimes cool people have great hearts. >> let's throw this open to the sea of people will came to hear
7:37 pm
you. please wait until the microphone comes to you. >> thank you for coming. is this on? okay. the so i just want to say something to mark crispin miller. why did you suggest it could be regarded as an anti-semite? that just overwhelmed me. >> well, because often people who sprang to the defense of muslims are accused of anti-semitism. that is why i said that. you have noticed this, no? >> what i have noticed is that anybody who supports the palestinians is branded as an anti-semite. i wanted to ask you about that. from my experience one occupation is criticized by lots of people. another occupation is completely ignored, and that is the
7:38 pm
occupation of the palestinian land, what has been occupied since 1967. and i visited the website. they are all from -- the palestinians are from the jerusalem area. >> not all. >> okay. good. it would be great if you got that out on the web site. you talk about that. this is the big occupation. villagers in morocco talk about. this is what a lot of muslims and a lot of other people in the developing world are talking about. native people are talking about this. this has to be made a very big subject. >> could you explain to the
7:39 pm
audience what website she is talking about? >> we have a website where you can see all these crazy things. it's called w hydoyoukillzaid.com. it is an organization that i like. a young jewish guy. he was 27. they realize that he had never spoken with the palestinians. and then once he spoke to several hours he found out that this palestinian is a human being. and this jewish guy created a
7:40 pm
foundation. he met this palestinian not in palestine. this young jewish guy is now of foundation. he gives lectures to a 15 year old. questions, muslims. and they learn together to work on computers after-school time. and these and christians, moslems, jews will be once the leaders of palestine and of itself. i saw them. i give them a lot of money. something like 70,000. it was for 22 students. it's not that much. i must to of a bit more. you have to buy more books. and everything goes to charity.
7:41 pm
and i hope when i met them, when i met these in people and i said and what about the religion? what do you think? they said what are you asking me? they find is so ridiculous that there should be a difference. one of them was you and another one was christian an and another one was muslim. if you read the car run what i s only one. our god and your got. it is one. there are not three counts. they have different names. jehova, god, and alah. but even the christians in the eastern world say alah to god. and the young people find it ridiculous. we use our holy books as a
7:42 pm
weapon to hammer home our personal view of this one and only got. it is ridiculous. by the way, mahummad want to tell the story, the true story of this woman. and he believes in jesus. he believed in the mariah, as he said. so the differences by not as big as some politicians make us believe. also muslim politicians. >> one of the things you know in the book is that -- nice. it means it's over. they keep. can i give you my schedule?
7:43 pm
>> you report in the book that the iraqis themselves are sorts of the constant harping. they take this much more casually than the media accounts or would lead us to expect. >> a western invention and western strategy to create within the iraqi population. so the americans gave everything when they arrived. so they have to take it away. of course. there were problems. this created problems. in the family there was as any man married to an iowa shiite woman. it did not know. the children. they don't care about that. and the difference between is less, much smaller than the
7:44 pm
difference between the protestant and catholic. not the big difference. >> next. >> from your experience if we don't have a surge in afghanistan where do you see the situation in the up? you hear a lot about how the al-qaeda taking safe haven in this mountainous regions. the taliban are having a resurgence. so without a surge -- i am just wondering where you see politically and culturally aware that would end up if everybody just moved out? >> i feel the solution is in negotiation. negotiations between the government and the taliban
7:45 pm
without al-qaeda. negotiations. i know some of the leaders. i met leaders of the taliban. i went twice with one of the so called taliban. he is not the taliban. you get to $25 million if you catch him. but we have to negotiate with them. he was america's best friend 29 years ago. he brought me twice into this country. now he is an enemy. but you have to talk. you don't have to make peace. you have to make peace with your enemies. you have to talk. and, you know, as the christian democrats i had of lot of relations with the republicans here in this country.
7:46 pm
but ronald reagan was always ready to talk with the leader of the empire of the devil. the russian leaders. and that was the solution. i must admit i was against it. in the beginning i said we cannot talk to these people. these are criminals. they are killing their people. but it was the right way to talk with the russians. and there were negotiations. the conference process. the conference on disarmament, security, corporation. human rights. it took more than 15 years, but it brought the solution. peace in europe. what for do we have politicians? not to make war. to make policy. to negotiate. to find solutions. that is the solution.
7:47 pm
in afghanistan allies during centuries of pact. a pact between different groups and the country. and every group, every tribe had a part of this. and we have tagged give them a part of the power. they should never run the country, but we have to negotiate with them. and then this is something that obama is doing. he says we have to negotiate. he says we have to negotiate with the neighbors in india. he makes, still. the political tactics. he says we can only negotiate with a moderate taliban. you know, that is a little bit ridiculous. >> use the microphone. >> it just seems as though they
7:48 pm
are differentiating between who they can negotiate with and to the can't. they are marginalizing the ones they can't, and it seems as though that is the perfect. the ones who will talk. >> we should start to the altai debt. sure. we have to talk with radical taliban. can you imagine. remember. the end of the vietnam war. your government had said we don't negotiate with the radical viet cong, although moderate viet cong. it is ridiculous. if you have -- we negotiate with the russians. we had to negotiate with all the russians. not all the moderate ones. we have to negotiate with everybody. and as far as al-qaeda is concerned the real al-qaeda, the bin laden, their operation capabilities that have been eliminated a long time ago. they've made speeches, but they
7:49 pm
have no direct contact. the real terrorists are everywhere in this world. this terrorist ideology has been globalized. and this terrorism is everywhere. in afghanistan. in iraq. in western europe. >> you actually make the point here afterwards. the majority of terrorist movements are worldwide. >> 35 of 48 terrorist organizations have nothing to do with islam. a long time in a trial against terrorists. it was the red army faction. nothing to do. >> well, i just feel compelled to say this partly because i
7:50 pm
have been edified by last month's author. this great new book out called selling piece which is basically a history of the cold crisis -- of confusing this with somebody else. thank you. he should know. the crisis. the history of the cold war in the middle east. when he was here speaking he noted that, you know, it was american foreign policy, official policy and israeli policy for a very long time to build up the most fanatical islamic movements as a way to weaken and destroy the arab nationalist and marxist movements in those parts of the world. so taliban, hamas, al-qaeda.
7:51 pm
they didn't just pop out of nowhere. our own view of how the world works is completely amnesiac. you suddenly are presented with these. when you play those kinds of games that can come back and bite you in the ass. not to be too crude about it, but i think that is, you know, an important thing to bear in mind. we have to bring some sense of history to our understanding of what is going on now. yes. wait for the mic. >> i would like to know how you think obama can negotiate with the republicans who really are -- a think the reason that he is looking like a lion in terms of putting in troops is because he feels he has to placate a certain segment. the gatt and.
7:52 pm
mccain got 47 percent through popular vote. so how is he going to negotiate within his own country to get things that should be done done? >> i see this problem also. and i think this man is also in danger. he is in danger. and there is no doubt. to just say i am ready to speak to the taliban, i am ready to speak iran, a lot of courage. in this country where everybody was told these are all terrorists. and therefore maybe these are tactical reasons why he doesn't want to be. could be. nevertheless i have to say as of reman who has survived the crisis of his life and the journey i have to say terrorism
7:53 pm
comes from injustice. the only way to defeat terrorism is a justice. and if we are successful in making a just and fair peace in palestine, a just and fair peace in afghanistan, and a just and fair peace in iraq then there will be no more terrorism. islamic terrorism in this world. the only strategy to defeat really global terrorism is not war. it is peace. it is peace.
7:54 pm
and said i could not be destined in this country because i did not have the money. now because of this president you have many enemies in this world. and he has to work hard to win back the trust of the world. and as a nation of commerce you need the trust of the world. that is very important. we need the trust of the chinese, the indians. and we are not the dominant tears of the world. america and the net is to estimate 300 300 million people. how many? six. six and a half billion. we have to be better. not only with our skills, but also with our hearts. and we have to live our value. and that is, you know, sometimes
7:55 pm
people in a rock say, yes, you are talking about human rights, t s, but is that human rights if you kill our children? i am a democrat. i am still in this. but when i was young sometimes i was protesting in the streets against things. and i'm a little bit amazed that the young americans who protest -- the older americans protest. but why the young americans don't say what they think about this strategy of working back it would help obama if you would say, if you would go to the streets and say stop the war in
7:56 pm
afghanistan. stop the war in iraq. stop the war in other countries. that is what you have to do. a democracy. democracy means rule of the people. rule. do something. say something. not do something. the reason why i wrote this book, i wanted to do something. and the reason why i asked my publisher, please translate it. and he published it. i wanted to do something. do something. open your mouth. say that you are against war and that you are for peace. i am not a dreamer. i am not a dreamer. i know that you need a strong army, but you don't need to make wars to be the number one nation in the world. >> is coming in in the back.
7:57 pm
>> what is your definition of terrorism? what is your definition of terrorism? what is your opinion of the u.s. policy against kurds of turkey and iraq? >> the second question is so complicated that i will not be able to give you an answer about the kurds. all i can tell you is that every saturday we play soccer in munich and my best partner is a kurd. gives me the best -- gives me the best opportunities. and i love him. he is a kurd from turkey. but i will answer you the first question. second question it was a joke.
7:58 pm
for me terrorism is violating, killing innocent people for political reasons. so don't ask me what i'd think about people who make illegal wars. >> you have got to talk into a microphone. i don't mean to be a nasty guy about it. >> you are really going to skip the second question? >> the second question, i think the kurds are really an unfortunate people. i have no -- you know, i could say i have no solution for the
7:59 pm
kurds. there are kurds in iran. kurds in iraq. kurds in turkey. they are mistreated in all these countries. and i don't have a solution. i just admit that i don't have a solution for everything. what i would always buy it for and suggest to do is to give them as much autonomy as possible. and in iraq we have a great autonomy for the kurds. not only now, but also saddam gave them a great autonomy. i know that the kurds want a country on their own. i don't see a way how it can be done. >> over here. >> i have learned in my life that sometimes there is no solution and to admit it.
