the following is a masn presentation. >> gary: mets-orioles, sheffield hot in the interleague. 10-game hit streak, david wright. for the orioles, their bats came alive in the last two games against atlanta. looking to make it three in a row, they open up a three-game set against the mets. manuel-trembley, skipper up.

>> gary: it's the ori masn. the o's hope to continue what they started on the weekend. it's the mets-orioles as interleague play continues. game one of a three-game series at camden yards. hi, everybody. i'm gary thorne for the orioles. now they are 4-2 in interleague play this season. they meet the new york mets for the first time since 2006. for the orioles, the hope is those bats that came alive in the last two games against atlanta will stay alive here. a chance during interleague play to compare the orioles to all of major league baseball. something we very rarely do anymore. it's usually about the division and about the league. if you look at all of major league baseball in the left- hand column, orioles numbers compare pretty favorably in runs, batting average, runners in scoring position in particular. it's the problem of the starting pitching and an overused bullpen probably where those e.r.a. are higher. jim palmer, that's not a surprise because as we've said for two seasons, that's what the orioles are working on
7:02 pm
correcting. >> jim: exactly, trying to get better. i think tonight jeremy guthrie will pitch for the orioles. he's 4-6. what he's really been hurt by. he's been looking for all those little earns answers by the home run ball. last game against the mariners. threw the ball great a couple of hanging sliders. again, bergesen has been good. hill from time to time has been very good for the starting staff. berken will pitch in this series. he's been good sometimes. he's a young pitcher just up to the big leagues. bottom line, you want to het help your bullpen. the bullpen has been terrific over last two weeks. if you're jeremy guthrie, thief they've got 19 runs last two games. hope you get some of those runs tonight. >> gary: up against a team that's hurting literally with a lot of injuries. maybe the right time to take on this club even though there are a couple in the lineup who are still red-hot. we'll be back. it's the mets-o's from camden next. and they're getting in the way of things i'd like to do. with the money bar, i can move my money around instantly, so when there's more bills than usual, it's no problem.

7:08 pm
most pitches thrown on average in the first inning. he averages about 21 pitches in the first inning. dave trembley feels that's giving him problems later in the game. tonight, he wants to see him work efishtly here on the mound -- efficiently here on the mound. >> gary: let's see how he does with it. the pitch will miss inside. martinez, a 2-0 count. one of the many call ups on a much-injured mets team. that will be fouled away. mets 32-29 just four games out in the national league east, but they are having to piece meel a lineup together -- piecemeal a lineup together seemingly every single night as they have players like reyes out of the lineup. jerry manuel, first year of managing. manuel before the game was asked about it. he said i haven't had time tothink about it. he said i'll tell you this much. it feels like it's been 10 years rather than a year. 2-2 delivery. that is foul and it will stay 2- 2. >> jim: yeah, he said every

7:13 pm
pitch against roberts. thank that is fouled away. he's second in double, third in runs in the american league. first in hit streak boost that had average to .299 flirting again with that .300 mark for brian and the streak has been a good one. he's gone 11-22, .500 batting average during the six-game hit streak. all of the orioles got back into it on sunday as far as gettinghits concerned. >> jim: yeah, everybody in the lineup. got a couple of home runs. it all started in the seventh inning in saturday where atlanta didn't pitch well. orioles took advantage. got big hits. got some walks. typical way of good, offensive teams taking advantage of a situation. >> gary: pelfrey's slider going to miss inside to brian roberts. it is 2-2. >> jim: yeah, mike pelfrey is only 25. he was really rushed to the big leagues.

7:15 pm
one prospect in left. beltran, gold glover. church last year the concussion problems. he's back. wright a-couple of gold gloves. cora, castillo, murphy who played a little bit of left field this year but came up as a first baseman and then brian schneider had all kind of injury problems early on. that's a pretty nice play right there especially when the wind is gusting up to 17 miles per hour. >> gary: it's blowing around here tonight. there are two down. that will bring up nick markakis. >> jim: the one thing that jerry manuel said is that daniel murphy is definitely a lot more comfortable at first base than he was in left field. >> gary: 0-1 delivery. murphy being much talked about as this may be a three-game set that decides whether he stays or goes. murphy at first base sharing time with fernando tatis with delgado out there have. they're in the happy with the offense being put up there. the offensive numbers of their first baseman we'll talk about
7:16 pm
later, but it's virtually zero. they're wondering whether they have to make a trade or whether they can wait for delgado. markakis really turned around the home plate umpire jeff kellogg after the last pitch and had a major conversation. he also -- kellogg looked over into the dugout as there was something being cawlgd there about a called strike. 1-2 delivery. that is inside. it will go to 2-2 on markakis. the orioles are hosting the mets here for the fifth time. last time mets played at camden yards was 0-1. last time these two teams played was '06. the overall record for the orioles, they have a 7-12 mark against the mets in interleague play. >> jim: you're seeing a little bit of jeremy guthrie right here with mike pelfrey. he's trying to get and stean establish all his pitches in the first inning when -- that's why we're going to get to a high pitch count here. some 3-2 counts. i always felt when you go 3-2,

7:20 pm
with the .364 number. a good slider away foul tipped into the mitt held on to by wieters. second strikeout for jeremy guthrie. >> jim: right here, a little extra. i don't know if it's a cut fastball, slider. it ends up in the low 90sment for wright who loves the ball out over the plate f you're hitting what he's hitting, you'll hit about anything. he couldn't get to it. >> gary: that is something david wright will also do and that is strikeout. he is in the top 10 in the national league in strikeouts. one away and ryan church coming up. church in right field hitting at .270. he's got 10 doubles, a couple of home runs, 12 rbi's. he's been the right fielder on a regular basis. pitch is taken inside. there are points in this lineup jim and i were talking about this before the ballgame where you just got to go after some of these met hitters who are not hitting right now. watch out for the ones who are
7:21 pm
such as beltran, wright, sheffield. they are the three. the rest of this lineup, jim, you have a shot of getting outs a good shot. >> jim: yeah, they hit very well as an average. >> gary: left center field reimold. two down. tomorrow night, the promotion everyone is talking about here. first 15,000 fans 15 and -- 25,000 fans 15 and over, that bobblehead with him catching a ball with a bubble. go to 888-848-bird or orioles.com for the adam jones bobblehead. >> jim: you make a great point. look at the lineup every time you pitch. you know who is hot. who is not. jeremy sernl certainly knows about that. if you watch tape of sheffield, now he's been hot. he's 6-13 against the yankees with a couple of home runs.
7:22 pm
normally, he likes the ball out over the plate. i think he's become -- you can look at the numbers. he only has five base hits to right field. 22 to lefties. become more of a pull hitter. he is 40. you know, he's one of the 25 guys that have hit 500 home runs. he has 506 lifetimement he takes that pitch. -- lifetime. he takes that pitch. that's going to be a helicopter hit all the way up to towson which is north of here. >> gary: he has a knee problem that's been talked about. he was going to get an mri. that's what everybody said. yesterday, mets announced he's not going to get an mri. he feels fine to play. there's been no explanation why to first there was and there wasn't. sheffield himself told jerry manuel i'm good enough. i can play rand dh. jerry manuel said before the game i have to rethink how i use gary sheffield once our interleague play is over. i have no problem putting him out there as a dh playing him in all the games. one they have to play him in

7:26 pm
games. his longest homerless streak is 43 set back in 2000-2001. >> jim: how about david wright in 100 at-bats this year yet leading the league in batting average. i think the same thing applies for melvin mora in the fact he's a better hitter when he hits it all over the ballpark where. did he get that rbi? hit a softball into center field even though he was hitting the ball extremely hard before that. got four hits saturday night. >> gary: he's got 16 rbi's on the season so far. orioles would like to see that picked up as melvin hits in this number five spot generally and has chances with people on base. melvin has a four-game hit streak. lays down a bunt or tried. it will be a foul ball. believe me. he caught everybody unexpectedly with that bunt as wright was way back. >> jim: yeah, if you're going to bunt, you'd like to do it with no strikes because then you get wright who is playing back behind the bag. remember, he's a gold glover. you get him to play in a little

bit for at least two strikes or at least another one. now 0-2 or 1-2, he's going to play back where he's almost about closer to the outfield than he is to the infield. >> gary: pelfrey with a one ball, two strike count. melvin got hit. >> jim: yeah, but he was swing at that time. >> gary: right on the hand's fouled it off. >> jim: you're hoping he's all right there. i imagine they'll call this a foul ball because that ball really drops his arm. he's a big guy -- bevel is a big guy at 6'7". the ball runs in. brian schneider is wondering where the ball went. it got one of the hands. it appears to be the top hand, the right hand am dave trembley out. richie van sells, the orioles trainer. >> gary: that has mighty movement on it when you get a wall or take -- ball or take a swing that hard and still get hit on the hand with it. >> jim: you have a guy who is
7:28 pm
6'7" who has that running two seam fastball. we talked about being a sinkerball. then, you have a two strike count where you're trying to guard. you're anticipating i have to cover everything. i have to cover down and away. wigginton with a couple of home runs played third when melvin took sunday off. he was change to dave trembley. i was red-hot and didn't get to play. >> gary: you want guys complaining to you. melvin i guess wants to stay in. he's putting the glove back on. it looked like that hurt when he was touched. >> jim: and that's his throwing hand. it will be something you'll have to monitor. if you're richie van sells, the orioles head trainer, you're wondering, ok. is it starting to swell? do we have to get ice on it? do we need to take an x-ray to see if it's broken? >> gary: the umpires are meeting. i think they'rtalking about whethe should be a hit batter or foul ball.
7:29 pm
the call was foul ball. jeff kellogg asked for tim timmons and rob drake at first and third to come in and talk with him about it as to what they saw. mora is going to try to stay in. >> jim: i'm wondering are they going to call him out because the ball hit his hand and didn't hit the bat. >> gary: that's what he's talking about. >> jim: yeah. i don't know if the out was ever put out. the ball was live. they're going to call him out. he may say the ball got my finger and the bat. i don't know if we can see that. >> gary: he's -- >> jim: otherwise our out. i'm not sure schneider -- you look back and brian schneider is look where the ball is because the ball is live. jeff kellogg is trying to explain that now that we've had this little parlay down to
