orioles last night picked up four runs on seven hits, generally enough to give you a chance to win. by the time they got those runs in the ninth inning, the ballgame had pretty much run away from dave trembley's team because of the error and the three unearned runs. gives themselves a chance in the rubber match tomorrow. both these teams can produce runs in the first inning. most in the majors you're looking at there. the mets 50 and the orioles with 44. >> jim: an intriguing number. i was wondering, when you think about that, do you think that maybe you prepare better for the starting pitcher than you do some of the relievers because you see them, you see the film, get a better handle on them? >> gary: they're the ones you're looking at. >> jim: obviously you're at the top of your line-up.

roberts and markakis and jones have been so hot throughout the year. >> gary: the other interesting part about scoring runs in the first inning is that these two teams, the mets and the orioles, are also the only teams in the majors who have allowed more than 40 runs in the first inning. so there's a lot of offense in the first couple innings when these two teams play both ways. >> jim: you wonder, because we look at the orioles, they had an ineffective and an injured laden starting staff early on and they made some changes. we're going to see those really over the next couple of months. the mets with perez out, maine out, they've lost 40% of their starting pitching. >> gary: and what a walk that was. did he earn that one.
