plate. fans booing about the fact the fan reached out and touched the ball there but it wasn't going to make much difference. >> jim: that was the one hand swing on a pretty good curveball. >> gary: they're also booing because of the uniform the fan's wearing. what do you think? that's the seventh double of the season. carlos beltran standing in. beltran, first ball hitting right field, nick markakis coming, he's got it. beltran has been so anxious in this ballgame at the plate. he's had a single, he's 1 for 5:00 but he's been going after first pitches, that's the second out in the ninth inning. but as baseball drama will do, the game's leading hitter average-wise is coming to the plate in the ninth with two away. >> jim: he's also hitting .510
10:01 pm
against lefties. >> gary: don't need to say much except david wright. he has not had a hit tonight, 0 for 4. he's 2 for 9 so far in the two games. that one to center field, the bobblehead man is going to end it. he got it. this one's in the book for the o's. a 6-4 win setting up the rubber match for tomorrow. johnson will get the win, feliciano the loss. the save to sherrill.

first two rbi's. >> outstanding back end of the bullpen work tonight. jim johnson two scoreless innings, and george sherrill picks up the save to even up the series at a game each. >> thanks very much. let's go down to the one of the stars at least tonight with amber. >> that's right. matt wieters gets his first home run in the major leagues. are you just glad you got it out of the way. you knew it was going to come at some point. >> i mean redding was a guy i faced a little bit in the minor leagues so i knew he threw a lot of strikes, i was fortunate enough to get it to carry out. it's good oh get the zeros out of the home run and rbi column. >> looking at what aubrey huff was able to do. this was a good ballgame going back and forth, but to come out on top in a game like this. >> it was, both the starters gave their teams a chance to win and the bullpens really --
10:04 pm
>> i think they got aubrey huff right next to him, so matt a little bit, too. you'll have to answer to the veteran on that one. he took a little bit of the pie for you. >> i'll hear about that one later. >> getting back to the fun you guys had when we saw nolan reimold get the pie and your other teammates, does this kind of complete this for you. balls you guys all came up together at the same time, and to have a night like this. >> definitely, i mean, anytime you get pie in your face, you've had a good night. it's good to get a win. >> enjoy. get that pie out of your face. thanks. >> gary: that may be the line of the season right there. anytime you get pie in the face you know you're having good night. it sets up the rubber match for tomorrow. our coverage on masn hd will begin at 6:30 with "o's xtra"
10:05 pm
presented by at&t followed by the game at 7:00. for all of our crew, thanks for being with us here at camden yards, everybody. wieters, pie in the face, real solid nie. how it all happened, coming up next, "o's xtra," jim and rick right now. welcome in, everybody. it's "o's xtra." how about that first major league home run, first major league rbi off the home run and his first curtain call. the orioles celebrating a victory as they beat the mets tonight to even up this interleague series at a game each. welcome back in to our picnic area. a lot of excitement here tonight. i really believe because of the wieters home run, it got the
10:06 pm
crowd into the game. everybody was waiting for that first home run hoping it would be hit here at camden yards and the young man finally came through. >> the guy who catches the ball in the grandstands gets interviewed just for catching matt wieters's first home run. it was exciting. >> that's a valuable souvenir. >> well, it is now. >> let's get a look at the highlights for tonight as matt wieters early on became the man of the night as the orioles got a lead in the first, but it was a tie game 1-1 in the second. he jumped on the first pitch, showed power the other way. just barely into the seats. he certainly made that guy very happy right there. >> tonight it was the first row a curtain call. now, bottom of the fifth, it is 3-2 orioles. and melvin mora, rbi base hit. >> this is what we're used to seeing melvin mora hit, with
10:07 pm
men in scoring position. he did that and he drives in markakis and puts the orioles up another run. >> mark hendrickson came on with the bases loaded. that forces in the tying run, but hendrickson will get a double play to get out of the inning. then in the bottom of the 7th, aubrey huff just crushing it. >> this ball club really needs him to do that. a bullet onto the flag court, the orioles have a tie ballgame go up now 6-4. >> aubrey huff, his first home run since may 26. that got the orioles the lead. there's the final line score. the mets four runs on 12 hits. identical scores in the first two games in the series, each team winning by the final of 6- 4. feliciano who is usually lights out against left-handed batters gave up a single to markakis, then the home run to
10:08 pm
aubrey huff. look at nick markakis, four out of four. it is the second time this season that he has a four-hit game, the 11th time in his career and he's also beginning to heat up. >> nick markakis is one of those key guys, he's like brian roberts, this ball club just doesn't win unless nick markakis is swinging the bat well. one thing i really love to watch about nick markakis when he hits is wherever they pitch him, that's where he hits the ball. tonight he was picture perfect. another shot to right field. a little sidearm slider up the middle of the plate. last at-bat for nick markakis, another base hit right up the middle. it's good to see him using all the field, using all the pitches and getting him back on
10:09 pm
track. >> markakis is 7 for 13 in that streak. a .387 average. tonight he goes four for four as the orioles are able to win by a final of 6-4. koji uehara tonight made the start, his second start since coming off the dl, and he gave the orioles five pretty good innings. >> you could tell through portions of the ballgame he was a little shaky, kind of lost his command. but overall, you still see that sink ising fastball and the split-finger fastball he has. parts of the game his chand was excellent. he used the upper part of the strike zone. very, very tough to deal with koji uehara when he's got that split finger working and makes the fastball that much better. >> so pretty good line for koji uehara.
10:10 pm
he left with the lead. the bullpen allowed the mets to tie it and koji uehara pitches to a no decision, but he certainly did his first job. manager dave trembley meeting with the media. >> koji really battling to keep the score what it was. i think that's all very apparent to everybody that saw the game, but i like the fight that we showed tonight and a real determination. we made a lot of nice plays. hendrickson got the double play. there was an awful lot of contributions to us winning the game tonight. like i said before, you know, it was a big game for us, especially coming back from last night. evening up the home stand now and getting a chance to go into the plus column with the game tomorrow. this is a good one to enjoy for everybody. you got to feel real good about some guys who stepped up
10:11 pm
tonight and really i think turned the corner. not only for themselves, but for the ball club. >> wieters one of those guys that turned the corner tonight? >> oh, i don't know. i think he's -- i think every team i plays he's learning and growing and getting better. there's so much probably going on so fast for him right now, but i'm sure later on tonight, tomorrow, he'll be able to enjoy some of the things that happened for him today. >> lately he's clearly been frustrated after -- do you think he needed something like this tonight? >> i think everybody needed it. i think as a team you need to know your guy that's sitting in the middle of the line-up like that comes through with a big hit. there's a lot of emphasis on those guys all the time, because they always seem to come up when it's really important and the game's on the
10:12 pm
line. as a team, you a lot of the things that happen for you are the direct result of what they do, and i think it's nice that both nick and aubrey had the kind of games they had tonight, because i think that goes well with what we're trying to do as a club. >> he got ground balls, they just weren't hit at people. and chef feel is obviously not a good match-up for him. the 6th inning for me was the key. we needed to get three outs in the sixth and at least keep it close. they came back and tied it. hendrickson got the big double play ball. uncharacteristic for brian to walk people. usually doesn't walk people.
10:13 pm
you can't steer the ball. he got ground balls. they just found the holes. >> well, johnson and i talked before the game. he knew that he was going to get two innings tonight likely. i talked to him way before the game. he had had three full days off, i mean four really, and we were hoping that the limit we were going to get with koji would be six, it was more like five. we were trying to duplicate what we'd done with him the last time, not really extend him a whole lot more than what he did the time before. to the mets credit, they really battled their butts off against him, especially with two strikes. there was a lot of foul balls with two strikes. but johnson came in with power stuff. but i think it's good that he knew before the game he was going to, he was probably going to be in that situation to throw to and he was well rested and he was up for it.
10:14 pm
>> does it surprise you to look up at the board and realize he hasn't won in two months. >> well, there's a whole lot of factors that go along with that. i mean it's very similar to last year with guthrie, having so many quality starts and not getting any w's because of it. those kind of things you really can't control any more than you can control what happens when the ball's out of your hand. i mean i think it's a credit to him that he would come back after missing more than two weeks and being able to pitch as he did tonight versus how he pitched the first time. you could really see a difference tonight in how he pitched. he was more like koji. there's still some rust coming off, but he certainly was a lot better. i think the next time will be even better. i think what we're trying do is
10:15 pm
monitor him. we're going to have to bring him along slow and let him, i think the cool weather played in his favor tonight. but he was much better than he was the first time and i would expect the next time he pitches he'll be, if not back to full strength, back to where he is most of the time. >> probably not. >> that was unusual tonight? >> probably not. i just thought at that particular point in time you had to change it up. you had to change it up. you had to go with a guy that is going to throw it across the plate. if you have a guy that is the epitome of pitches to contact, it's hendrickson. he's not a situational pitcher.
10:16 pm
>> he looks like nick. which is probably the best compliment. he looks like nick. letting the ball get deep, not chasing pitches. nick's a pure bona fide major league hitter. that's what he is. and a good one. a very good one. >> i thought in the third and the fourth he really had to work hard to get out. what i liked tonight, i like when he got right out, he showed some emotion. that was big out for him. i think he realized the match- up there was really important. i didn't see any reason to try
10:17 pm
and extend him any further than he had already gone, him being the second time out. maybe the next time we'll see how it goes. try to get him a little further along. but i thought the fifth inning was very good for him. he was either going to win it or get no decision. he wasn't going to lose it. >> so manager dave trembley, his comments following the game and the talk about koji uehara there. it's now nine consecutive starts without a win. as dave trembley talked about, sometimes it's just a coincidence on the night your turn comes up. >> definitely. one thing i really liked about koji tonight was the way he pitched a lot of hitters, and especially wright. david wright had all the trouble, the way you pitch him, you try to get him up and in with a fastball. he really kept their best hitter became not a factor in that ballgame by pitching him
10:18 pm
10:20 pm
the taps are excited ou here. they have their adam jones bobbleheads, the aubrey huff home run is sending them home happy. it's an orioles win. look at the excitement for this team. these fans want to elect rick dempsey the mayor of baltimore. look at the excitement out here. >> that is really good to see. it's amazing how in the span of one night both 6-4 games, orioles last night had to
10:21 pm
battle back. but tonight the huff home run gave them the lead. >> always exciting here. you know how well the orioles do hit the ball so well here at home. we got a pretty good crowd tonight. david wright and all of them come in here and everything and hit the ball the way they hit the ball tonight and do all the little things we did, it was pretty exciting. i could hardly hear anything you say, they're so loud. >> we're going to head into the clubhouse, he's in the dugout i'm told. aubrey, tell us about that at- bat. you absolutely crushed that ball and it couldn't have come at a better time to give the orioles the win. >> it was a, the night before i'd faced him he threw me a lot of sliders. he got a 3-2 slidatory strike me out. i took two fastballs right there, pretty good pitches to hit. i was just looking slider the whole time. just got a good pitch to hit. >> aubrey, you talk a little about all the mechanical little things that you do.
10:22 pm
an at-bat like that where you kind of stay back like you were talking when you did dempsey's, does that kind of catapult you for the rest of the week? >> i hope so. it's been a rough two weeks for me. i had a tough road trip. coming back home, kind of lost that feel. got back on track today a little bit, hopefully that continues. >> you guys seem to be having a lot of fun when we have our wins and everything, i know you want to get on some streaks. what's the feeling in the clubhouse after a win that you guys can really get going again. >> we've got a lot of young guys on the team. every day we win it seems like the young guy is getting a pie in the face, that makes it a lot of fun. we've still got a lot of baseball left. definitely the young guys coming up is giving us a lot of energy. >> in fact it had been 18 games
10:23 pm
your last home run. one of the things i've observed about you is you don't seem to take any times when you're going into a slump to the next at-bat. you seem to have that ability to just brush it off. were you able to maintain that. >> well, i've played this game long enough to know that the way i hit, when i get hot, i get white hot, when i get cold, i get pretty cold. certainly it does get frustrating, you want to do well, but you just want to take those slow streaks and try and stay as positive as possible. >> does it allow you to relax now that you hit that home run and got that one out of the way? >> no, never really relaxed, but obviously just to get it on the board. it was getting up there to some of my probably career highs without hitting a homer in a while.
10:24 pm
>> aubrey, we appreciate the visit. thanks so much, and a big job tonight in the game winning home run. we appreciate it. it was an absolute crush job out to the flag court in right field. the huff home run that won the game came on the night that matt wieters hit his first big league home run, opposite way for wieters into left field for his first roundtripper.
