jayson werth. >> closer issues in philadelphia. brad lidge on his way back.r ryan madsen struggling right now. >> he has a great change-up. it shows you how important a guy like brad lidge. is he struggled early in the l season, but it tells you what kind of mindset you have to have to pitch that spot. that's why brad lidge is so special. >> rod barajas a solo home run. blue jays win it 8-7, sweeping the phillies in philadelphia. help us make sense of these numbers, 13-19 at home. >> it's early in the season. this is a team that's very, very good. they've lost their closer. they have to be a little more it can. they haven't been hitting at home. that's the bottom line. all of a sudden you lose raul ibanez and this guy is so special on the field and in the clubhouse, and in those hitters' meeting for the other team.
6:16 pm
they spend so much time trying to figure out how to get raul ibanez out. that's going to hurt a guy like ryan howard, chase utley. >> why so? >> because when guys beat you and they have good numbers, a guy like raul ibanez can hurt you from line the line, this is a guy they're going to spend a lot of time, like obviously on the field they, are but in the meetings, to figure out, we're not going to let raul ibanez beat us. now that he's out of the lineup, obviously that's not going to be talked about and they'll key on ryan howard, a chase utley even more, jay son werth. that just adds more pressure on them. >> let's hit on the white sox and cubs here. ozzie guillen and the cross-town matchup. bottom of the eighth inning. this may be footage from last year. this is the cubs with offense. >> they've struggled. p soriano's on-base percentage is down. they're not hitting well with runners in scoring position. they're not getting it done. they made a change with the hitting coach, a very good hitting coach, but sometimes yor have to make a change to wake the team up.
6:17 pm
i think with vaughn josh war, they'll get fired ufap and see what takes place going forward. >> derrek lee and geovany soto with home runs in the bottom of the eighth.u are alfonso soriano scoring reed johnson in the bottom of the ninth. >> a win like that can pick you up. hitting .227 with runners in scoring position. .224 as a team. they need to get it going and get back to the basics. i think when you make a change at hitting coach, that will make everybody up and have everybody on their toes. >> nine hits for the cubbies, six runs scored in this game today. alfonso soriano after the game talking about the game-winning hit. >> it's good because we're coming back. and that's how we did it right there. i think now the pressure is off and everybody now feels comfortable. >> he's too talented to have a valley as big as he's been in. you can have some peaks and valleys, but he's been in a gorge.
6:18 pm
[laughter] and you know, he's too talented. >> seems like we could say that about so many of the guys in that lineup, alfonso soriano, derrek lee, geovany soto, milton bradley. we expected that to be another big bat and it hasn't happened with the cubs. play the role of lou piniella for a moment. what do you do with this lineup? >> they're paying all their hit soars much money. it's tough to make a big change. the big question mark has always been alfonso soriano, do we leave him leadoff or let him hit third or fourth? i believe he likes to be on top. he's not hitting well. that's key. i was a leadoff hitter my whole career, as you go, the rest of your team goes. he's hitting .225. he's not where he needs to be as a leadoff guy when you're playing these big guys to hit you in. as a team, the combination of them all are not getting it done and it shows with their average with run centers scoring position, .227. that's not going to get it done. they need to all step up and they all need to do what they
6:19 pm
need to do. each guy has a role. you need to step up and everybody has to fill that role. >> entering play today, the third worst offense in the major league, fourth worst in terms of batting average. the red sox beat the marlins on wednesday night to become first team in the mesh league with 40 wins. fernando, what separates the red sox right now from everybody else in the american league? >> i think first you got look at experience. that's huge because they've been there before and they've won big games and pressure moments. then you look at how they're playing at home. 23-8 at home. when you have a winning ball club, you want the play real well at home and play .500 ball on the road. that's exactly what they're doing on the road, .500 ball. when they come home, 23-8. you look that's right bullpen, it's been lights out. a 2.9 e.r.a. for the bullpen. as an offensive club, they're hitting .283 with runners in scoring position. you put that altogether, they're going to win games and with the experience they have, they're going to get it done in the american league east. >> undefeated against the yankees this season. >> that's the key. >> another baseball milestone reached this week when pudge rodriguez played in his

2,227th game as a catcher. most in baseball history. put that achievement into perspective in today's game. >> that is huge. if you look at the list of guys that have won ten gold gloves or more in a career .300 average,so he's on a very short list.he sh he's a very special player. what he's done, to be able to do it for so many years and do it from the catcher's position, think about how many times he's had to crouch down and all the pressure and all the different pain he gets in his knees. it's just really tough position: to play. nut on top of that to be offensively gifted to hit .300 for your career, this is a special guy. he's the first ballot hall of famer and just, you know, he really deserves a lot of credit for what he's done and huh he's persevered. he did it for 12 years in texas with that heat. it's a very special accomplishment. >> how much gas do you think is left in the tank with pudge? >> as you get older, your body starts beating you up and things start slowing down. >> this guy, i've seen him work. he works he's done working. he continues to work. that's why he's such a special guy. that's why he keeps his body in shape.
