he's a candidate for a fastball up and in the way he's swinging, wailing away at the ball. >> he got rolling a little earlier. extends. guzman picks it on the hop. good defense by the nats in this inning, two outs right as we arrive at the 3:00 hour in national park in the nation's capitol. the sun is blazing, beautiful day at the ballpark, 25,000 or so, but all blue jason the scoreboard, 6-2. >> happy father's day to all
3:01 pm
the families who's dad is in the military. >> we want to thank them all for what they do so that we can be with ours. 1-1 to overbay, two for two, three rbis, a base hit, homer. this guy has always been a good hitter. i remember we used to go to milwaukee. when they needed a home run, they'd put their hands over their heads in the shape of a big o. he was popular there, and he got traded for pitcher bush, gross and another player to be named later. well hit, and still out at first base. if at first or second you don't succeed, try, try again. nick coming up with the bat
3:02 pm
after slick nick with the glove put on a nice show. beer here. two beers! are you insured? do you know when your beer is perfectly cold? or do you risk drinking a warm one? if you have the new coors light cold-activated can, you're covered. because now every can turns blue when your beer... is as cold as the rockies. it's cold insurance, only from coors light. cold beer: that's our policy. ( smack, crowd awes ) you might want to put something cold on that. frost-brewed coors light. the world's most refreshing beer.
3:03 pm
a little bit of everyth we've seen in this ball game. the one thing we'd like to see a little more of is nats offense against the rookie pitcher, romero. your dad was a long time journalist in new england. >> yes, he was. my father was a newsman, unfortunately passed away about 13 years ago, but he passed on the voice to me. i don't personally love the voice, but my dad had a low voice like this. he went all the way back with bob crane from hogan's heroes fame back in the 50s when bob crane was on radio in new york. there's a lot of news in my blood, although i happen to play sports. >> my dad was a welder at the
3:04 pm
shipyard on the mississippi. he didn't pass along many welding skills to me, but he did teach me what hard work was all about. >> that's what my dad taught me, work ethic. >> yep. >> my dad often holding down two, three jobs to support kids that could eat a lot. >> that's hard to believe. >> my two sisters were almost as big as me. >> a busy man this weekend. the bottom of the 5th, nick johnson. so whatever your dad does, honor him today. i think adam dunn had a great comment earlier. he said, to him father's day is not about him being a dad, it's about his dad. i think a lot of us think that way. we love our kids to death and love our families, but it's our dads we're thinking about,
3:05 pm
especially when they're no longer here with us. that's a fair ball. nick, a great safe, an amazing weekend for him. just put it in play. look at the head down. >> she did make a nice little hop over the ball at the end there. >> don't touch it. >> here's ryan zimmerman. we said this a couple of times today. the nationals are long from being done in this game. and i guarantee you, there's not one guy in the first base dugout who doesn't think they're going to come back and sweep the series.
3:06 pm
3:07 pm
some interesting doings in -- new york. they've taken a 4-3 lead over the mets. tampa bay six back of boston. these blue jays are five back. yankees three out. the red sox in first at 41 and 27 kearns is next. runner in scoring position with one out here in the fifth. they play adam dunn pretty deep. they don't play as dramatic a shift now. the blue jays are the one ball club that really changes defenses against adam dunn based on man on base or not. they want to leave the shortstop at home to stay right
3:08 pm
behind nick and keep him close to second base. >> i think regardless of whether adam is on a hot streak or cold streak, he picks so carefully, especially with a base open, and kearns has to make them pay if they walk him. >> interesting, i was listening to a report yesterday about hillman who manages the royals. he went into their series against st. louis and said we're not going to let albert beat us. he's driven in about five runs in the series. just because you say and don't want him to beat you, your pitchers still have to execute something here and there. sometimes there are men on base and you have to pitch to a guy. dad's a hero today. there's a souvenir.
3:09 pm
did i spot a red sox cap already? he takes the walk. two on, one out, kearns coming. second walk issued by romero today. you can get the latest nats news this town offers and much more on face book. you can join the fan page or add -- hard to believe -- add teddy roosevelt as your friend. follow teddy on twitter at teddy26nats or check out our notes at natstown mlb. there's kearns. >> i do twitter. >> i can send a text. that's about it. >> that's all you have to do. that's what twittering is.
3:10 pm
>> i don't have one of those phones that's a quick type, if you know what i mean. >> maybe you can work something out with the iphone people. >> that's okay. you don't want to get too tech no on me. do you have a crank phones at home? remember the waltons on tv. they still had that phone. >> i'm not ready for twitter. >> you have a jitterbug phone. >> what does that mean? >> for like senior citizens. >> if the shoe fits. you haven't seen the jitterbug commercial? >> nope. it's like a phone with big
3:11 pm
numbers and not a lot of bells and whistles. 2-2 to kearns. the ball gets away, but the runners have to stay. now it's 3-2. >> try to steal a soap dish out of the clubhouse and the metal detector stopped me. >> you're kidding. i would imagine a soap dish in that clubhouse is probably made of marble or granite. >> the clubhouses are like that. the bases are loaded with one out. really good at-bat by austin.
3:12 pm
he's not going well, zero for 14 and 10 for 77, and for him to take a borderline pitch when he's dying to get a hit shows a lot of professionalism on his part. there they are. the nats bunch. it will be a big spot for gonzalez, a contact man. >> that could be a defining moment for austin kearns. taking a walk in the midst of a very big valley. he could have gone up hacking at everything. now he's got one of our hottest hitters out there. a chance to get a base hit or fly ball and get one, possibly two runs.
3:13 pm
that's a double play ball. kearns really went after aaron hill, and right after two consecutive walks, alberto gonzalez swung at the first pitch. hitters will do that. we can't figure it out sometimes, but look at kearns go after hill. i've never been all that great with my money. probably because i've never had much. but now that i'm making more, it's time to be a little smarter about how i manage it.. with the calendar, i can schedule all my payments. and when funds are low, danger days help me stay out of the red.
3:14 pm
3:15 pm
that was a tough one to take, first pitch swinging. the 5th inning belonged to johnson. how about this? getting going with his glove, great play and great shuffle pass, then he knocked it down. sticks with it, finds martis, who had found the bag and leads off the next inning, bottom half with a double. not able to get johnson home, but nick did hess part. >> you can say one thing about the offense, the situational hitting has been poor, with the exception of josh bard back in the second. the lack of contact with men on base and then gonzalez swinging at the first pitch after two walks and a double play.
3:17 pm
drive. you can drop off new and worn ties. all collected will benefit career gear. >> i've got ties i can donate. >> i've seen some in this booth that should be donated. >> i was going to say the same thing about you. >> i hope they don't look at them and say, that's okay, guys, i think it's time to give me the ties -- let me retire them. >>. >> old school, radio.
3:18 pm
this will be ridiculously easy after those plays. he's got it for the second out. the nats will see if they can get marco scutaro out for the first time today. did your dad work on the titanic? >> no. these were riverboats, boats and barges on the mississippi river. he was a very good welder, and he made me work there two summers while i was in college.
3:19 pm
i never wanted to go back to school so bad in my life. so thanks for that. >> he taught you something. >> he sure did. we got to carry all the scrap iron and junk around the yard. >> he wanted to show you he didn't want you to do that. he wanted you to study, go to college and become something. >> and he did that for 38 years. that to me is amazing. >> i know i've talked to men from that generation. my dad was born in 1911. he was a teenager when the depression hit. he always told me the most important guys of his generation was steady work. he could have gone elsewhere and made more money at times, but he wanted the steady work. i know a lot of our older fans
3:20 pm
are nodding their heads yeah right now. that's what i was thinking. we solute you guys. you dads, grand dads and great grand dads tuned in today. >> my mother's father worked for the coal company in connecticut, and my father's father worked for the yale lock company making those locks that had the hinges. that's what he did. very hardworking family. one ball and two strikes to scutaro. they had a whole bunch of them six early.
3:21 pm
3:23 pm
adam done was coached b his dad, and now he cherishes every minute he gets to spend with his son, brady. i asked him earlier what father's day moans to him. >> father's day is about my father, and i look at it as kind of reflecting what my father did for me. he's obviously been the best, and he's been there for me through the good and bad. >> really proud of his son, bob. >> yeah think of anything prouder than seeing your son make it to the major leagues. >> and have success. there's adam and brady.
3:24 pm
>>. >> we're told that that ball was hit onto potomac avenue. >> he takes it up and in, so he's another candidate to get on base. the nationals have had their leadoff man on three of the last five innings. the rbi man is next. he did the right thing by not tossing the bat just yet. see buckner. there's been very little debate about his strike zone út%%- willie strikes out.
