>> jim: it is a warm andhumid night in n miami as the orioles get set to take on the marlins. final game of the three-game series as the others look to bounce back after dropping the first two to the n. l. east marlins. hi, everyone. i'm jim hunter. thank you for joining us tonight as the orioles close out the national league on the road portion of the interleague play before heading home. of course, for every major league manager, they take losses very, very tough. last night, especially so for the orioles skipper dave trembley because not only was he not happy with the loss, he was not happy with the effort. here is what he said after the game. a lot of the success we've had recently has been because we've played very good baseball and because we've played all 237 outs. we gave away some outs and that was really the difference in the game.
7:02 pm
joined now by buck martinez. buck, you always want to be able to control your effort and trembley felt last night orioles didn't do that. as a result, that led to the defeat. >> buck: yeah t-sure d it was part a a depart injury from what we saw in philadelphia when they swept the reigning world champ the philadelphia phillies. each of the three, rich hill, brad bergesen and jeremy guthrie pitched into the seventh inning. the defense was on their toes because the pitchers threw a lot of strikes. a lot about standing defense and clutch hitting. close ballgames, it makes just one or two good the difference. in florida, a different story. brushing mistakes. fielding -- baserunning mistakes, fielding to give the marlins extra outs and they took full advantage of it. matt wieters' first error and emilio bonifacio would score from first base when felix pie held the ball too long. that was the difference in the ballgame. when you look at the two series, it's quite a departure. 3-0 in philadelphia. they've lost the first two games here and scored five runs
7:03 pm
per game in philadelphia. different story down here and they only hit .240 against a very good florida marlins pitching staff. they have to grind and win this game. a 4-2 road trip isn't bad, but it's not as good as you expected when you start out 3- 0. >> jim: nick markakis last night in right field picked up another outfield assist gunning down a runner at the platement for ach an every day player, a hitter might going into a slump. day in and day out, you can help your team defensively. >> buck: you sure can especially when you throw out a runner at the plate it makes you feel like you've hate home run. nick markakis has been consistent with his defense. mechanically, he dawz lot of rings things right. he charges the ball well, he has a strong, accurate arm, and he's always given the infielders a good throw to make plays on. last night he picked up his ait's eighth assist of the evening. he's halfway to his total a year ago. he led last the major leagues last year with 17 assists. nick markakis takes a lot of pride in what he does. i asked him what his check list is as he prepares to make a throw to the plate.

>> anytime you have run aer on second base, you're always thinking, anticipating what if the ball is hit to me trying to position yourself. you know, when it's hit to you, the main part is executing and it that's always the the -- always the tough part and you have to think scenarios in your head before it actually happens. >> how much does it matter the score, where you are in the game, who the runner is? for instance, hermida last night probably an average run her in your estimation. >> yeah, aid chance to play him a lot younger. you know, it was one of those inbetween. he kind of -- you didn't know if he was going to fall or not. he ended up going and third base coach ended up leaving him. i put a good throw in. [ laughter ] >> jim: i smell emmy. >> buck: yeah, here we go with big sean west. 6'8", sean west, big left- hander that has come back from shoulder surgery. he had labrum surgery in 2007. he is 6'8". the rest of the pitching staff, they can all play power forward for the miami heat. they're all over 6'6" except ricky nolasco. sean west is 6'8" can be a very intimidating opponent. >> jim: jung young man just 23 years old and he began the year in double-a. here is another one of the pitchers, buck, double-a baseball, phone call away. there's a need on the big league club, you come up and

at the ballpark. marlins took their bp. orioles took their bp. ball three. brian has not only hit in six consecutive games. he has scored a run in five consecutive games. getting on base trying to here to begin the game. the pitch is there for a strike. he took all the way, 3-2. west is out of houston, texas. dave trembley looking on from the orioles bench. a pop foul out of play. so, now, six pitches into the at-bat, brian has seen pretty much everything that west can throw. >> buck: yeah, he's a big, strong kid. they're going to watch his pitch count. he's only gofn over 100 pitches once three starts ago against the giants in an eight-inning, two-hit effort. >> jim: another pitch to roberts. he got a lot of it, but foul. orioles have lost two in a row. as buck mentioned, they are 3-2 now on the trip.
7:12 pm
a 4-2 trip if you had said that before heading to philadelphia, you would have said to dave trembley, hey, how did 4-2 go, he'd say ok. here is the 3-2. swing and a miss. he got him on a wreabl. very -- breaking ball. very good pitch by west. one away in the oriole first. >> buck: one thing you don't expect when you're facing a young starter is a 3-2 hook in your first at-bat. he drops his slider on him. a very good slider and a -- in a good spot down and in. brian swings over the top of it. west has a good fastball at 94 miles per hour and a good late, breaking slider. >> jim: he is averaging since coming to the big leagues, this is only his seventh start. just under six strikeouts for every nine innings he works. here is nick markakis. slices it to left field. on the move, he can't get it! he goes into a dive and it got by him. markakis heads to second base. coghlan a good effort but
7:13 pm
couldn't reach it. >> buck: nick markakis taking advantage of the brian roberts' at-bat e got to see a lost pitches from sean west. jumps on the first fastball. chris coghlan only played one game in the outfield before they called him up to the big leagues. he's an infielder. he's done an ok job. that's a real challenge for even a seasoned left fielder a line drive off the bat of a left-hander is going to sleight slice awhich from you. -- slice away from you. >> jim: orioles have a chance to getted on board here in the first. here is one of the best hitters on the team hitting in these spots with runners in scoring position. adam jones was given most of last night off. he takes low, 1-0. jones is batting .367 with runners in scoring position. that is second best in the american league. i think kevin youkilis the only hitter in the league ahead of adam jones. he pops it up.
7:14 pm
right side of the infield. the second baseman dan uggla calls off cantu. uggla has it. two men down. in in at-bat, jones can't get it done. markakis at second with two away. >> buck: one thing ding different with this ball club in this series compared to the philadelphia phillies series, they have not come one key hits. they've had plenty of scoring opportunities especially in the first inning and last nightate's game. they had a runner at third base and couldn't score after brian roberts had hit that leadoff bathe base hit and pie had a base hit hient behind him. first and second, nobody out and you end up with nothing. >> jim: two down. here is ty wigginton batting cleanup. he's playing at first base tonight. aubrey huff the early part of the game off. it's low, 1-0. we'd like to apologize for the technical problems as we came on the air doing our open to the telecast. there's a bay here where both the marlins and the orioles television trucks where all the transmissions are generated from. the power in that entire bay went down.
7:15 pm
the marlins television truck still does not have their power. they're having difficulty. they just did now get back on. we apologize. our technicians are working very hard in the truck to get all of the computers back up and everything going. it's not what you expect after you go on the air. it's like somebody pulled the plug except nobody did. two out. wigginton a-strike. 2-1. >> buck: second time we have seen sean west throw breaking balls when he's behind in the count. he's got a lot of confidence. boy, he has been a real pleasant surprise since they called him up from double-a. as jim mentioned, his seventh start. >> jim: he was a compensation pick after the first round in 2005. wigginton pops it up. again, it's uggla at second base. he waits. it's a mile up there. it finally comes down. he makes the catch and the inning ends. a one-out double, a man left. we'll head to the bottom of the first in miami. no score.
