sean west has two wins in this his rookie season. he is 1-1 in his starts against the a. l. east. he beat toronto but lost to the yankees. this is his third start in the a. l. east and it will be his last. tampa bay will be hosting florida beginning tomorrow night. the marlins final three interleague games. ground ball towards third goes foul. that looked like an inside-out swing. >> buck: no, that looked like self-defense. on rich hill. high fly ball to right. brett carroll has a play now backs up a few steps has it for the outs. rich hill gets some good wood on it and one away. covering the bases tonight with rich hill, we asked him about his clubhouse personalities. >> i like to joke around. i do. it's kind of like that comfortlevel getting in there just kind of seeing which way you can go and which way you can -- how far you can i guess push the limits and joke around with some of the guys. >> jim: of course, he's in his first season with the orioles. he has to learn the other personalities. >> buck: absolutely. first thing he wants to do is be a contributor to the baseball effort and then he'll be more comfortable once that happens and falls into place. he's been a nice piece and done a nice job since he joined the club. as jim mentioned earlier, he

started the season in the lesion. -- minor leagues. he had problems in spring training. they shut him down for periods of time. he had to rebuild stamina and work his way back from the minor leagues. >> jim: ball two to brian roberts, 2-1. west has averaged about six strikeouts per nine innings but also is averaging four walks. he has not yet walked a batter here tonight. roberts has worked the count to 3-1. that's hard hit but foul. it's into the orioles bullpen. >> buck: when you see these young pitchers, you have a tendency to forget they're so early in their career. just seven starts. he came up from double-a. eats going -- he's going to have command issues and his mechanics are going in and out as he works his way through big league hitters. efer every once in a while, eel he'll make a good pitch like

that one 93-mile-per-hour fastball away from brian roberts. just 23 years old. he just turned 23 this month. i still marvel at the fact that he is coming back from shoulder surgery and throwing so well. >> jim: fouled off the foot of brian roberts. the orioles have been having trouble scoring runs. main reason is run producers are not producing. look at this the recession of the rbi column in the month of june. it's amazing that the leadoff man not known necessarily as a run producer by driving in runs, more so in scoring runs, brian roberts lead the club in rbi's this month. >> buck: he had five in the three games in philadelphia, so that will boost his total and you look at the rest of the team. just not an awful lot of production. brian is having a tough time of walking off the effects of that foul ball. it looked like it caught him on the left foot somewhere whether it's right on top of it or on the inside of the ankle bone.

john hirschbeck is giving him plenty of time to regroup a bit before he steps back in against the big lefty. >> jim: 3-2 the count. chopper towards the right side. uggla to his left and far to his left has roberts for the out and two men down. one pitch after fouling it off his foot he puts in play. he has to run down to the -- run down to first base. roberts retired for the second out -- second out. that will bring up nick markakis for the bases empty. nick doubled in the first. just his second hit in this series. he's had a pretty rough road trip now 5-20 on the trip. >> buck: it doesn't help when you're scuffling a little bit like markakis right now when you face in so -- face so many

left-handers. two in this series. two in the phillies series. they're not soft tossing lefties either. andrew miller held the lefties to seven hits over the first inning and that was the first batter of the ballgame brian roberts. you saw bastardo and cole hamels in philadelphia and cole hamels, of course, has steapd established himself as one of the premier left-handers in all of baseball. it's a challenge when you're not really swing the bat the way you would like and then you compound that with a whole lineup of left-handed starters. >> jim: on a four-pitch walk with two men down, markakis on base a second time. first walk allowed by sean west. west coming off a loss. he lost to the yankees last friday night. lasted only four innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits as adam jones comes up representing the tying run. markakis now will take his lead

from first. that's over, but low, 1-0. he had won his prior two starts before facing the yankees in interleague play. two wins since coming up from double-a. he made eight starts in the minors. this is his seventh for themarlins. he misses inside adam jones with ball two. adam popped out to second base his first at-bat. he's now 0-8 in the series and 0-- 0-9 last overall. there's a strike taken all the way. 2-1. west has been stingy with the base hits allowed in the big leagues. he's -- he is allowing 7 1/2

per nine innings so less than one per inning. check swing low breaking ball. ball three. >> buck: yeah, west has not made any real good pitches bottom of the strike zone. we talked about how important that is for him during our scouting report. when he gets those low strikes, man, he can really be a tough opponent for hitters. so far he hasn't zeroed in on the low strike. >> jim: 3-1 on jones. markakis takes his lead. high fly to center field. cody ross in on the ball has a play and has it for the out. the orioles are done in the third. a two-out walk, but a man left. marlins coming up in the bottom of the third against rich hill with a 2-0 lead. change it up a bit... and you're sure to get a reaction. >> amber: back the oriole trailing 2-0 here in the third. leadoff batter for the marlins chris coghlan. coghlan wears the number eight he told me because he loved cal ripken, jr. growing up. he grew up in rockville, maryland, till he was 9 years old and then his parents moved to tampa where he would see the orioles in spring training. he always wanted to meel meet cal. when he was 7 years old, his patients took him to camden yards and waited for the right- field line to meet cal ripken. he was going to throw his hat and ball on the field so cal would drop it. he thought would he pick it up, sign it and give it back to him, but chris' timing was all wrong. he threw the hat and ball behind cal and toad beg a security guard to get his hat

and ball back. he says hopefully now that i'm in the big leagues, i'll have a clabs to -- clans to meet cal ripken. >> jim: well, if the orioles hosted the marlins, we might have made that happen. that's a nice story out of rockville, maryland. >> buck: yeah, i can see him too an 8-year-old going he's going to pickup my hat and, would you sign it, plees please. he never saw it. you know he would have had he seen it. he was great signing autographs. at the end of his career, i don't know how he did t every night standing out there signing autographs for hours after the game. when you've got to alaud that, man. he was something else with all the demands on his time, he still had plenty of time for the people that meant the most him to and that was the fans. >> jim: 0-2 is outside. coghlan moving to the tampa area then went to college at the university of mississippi. outside, ball two. >> buck: we mentioned what a

good athlete he is. he's an infielder and second baseman and he went to the outfield. played a total of one game in the minor leagues this year and then they called him up and he's been in left field most of the time. >> jim: takes a close pitch for ball three. coghlan was down 0-2. now he's worked -- worked it full. marlins lineup has a lot of energy. hit hard foul. you talk about how they do with what they have and the athletes they have and versatile baseball players. for the most part, they start four second baseman, but they all hustle. they all have a lot of energy and they all seem to play well together. they're really developing a pretty good team down here. here is the 3-2 curve ball puld pulled. markakis towards the line. coghlan is hustling to second base. the throw will not be in time. after getting no balls and two strikes, coghlan gets on with a

melvin let's it roll foul. one thing about this marlins lineup i guess in part because they have so many inexperienced hitters, but if you're aggressive and you throw strikes, you have a good chance to get them out. they lead the national league in striking out. with the four tonight, it's 589 strikeouts now. that's more than any other club. >> buck: they're showing good patience tonight by staying back and anticipating curve balls on two strike counts. >> buck: he bunts again back to hill. he turns and gets it to first and sacrifice is successful. fredi gonzalez already with a lead trying to get an add on run. leadoff double who sacrifices him to third. he's now at third base with one down. >> buck: there's the base runner at second base. rich hill comes over and fields t you can see he doesn't think about third base. he had his body position to go
