in baltimore. manny acta and dave trembley, a budding rivalry in the making between the nationals and the orioles. it is interleague baseball american league style. the nationals can add a d.h. and the orioles are back home to begin a six-game home stand. it is the young nationals trying to get it going. the orioles, the bird and screech and it is up next on masn! >> bob: good evening and welcome in on a hot and humid friday night in baltimore and the budding rivalry is underway as the orioles get set to entertain the nationals. hi, everybody. jim hunter with jim palmer, rob dibble coming up with bob carpenter and i know one thing, the orioles are happy to be home. >> jim: they're 11-23 on the road. why is that? they have the highest batting average in american league at .300. they give up 4.33 runs per game. here at camden yards and over six on the road. they happy to be here. >> we're combining forces, rob

the orioles got two out of -- 2- 3 in washington in may and now the nationals are trying to return the favor here against the bird whose have come back after a 3-3 road trip. southwest airlines starting lineups for the nationals, guzman, johnson and zimmerman with adam dunn d.h.s, the national league team has a d.h. in the american league park. willingham in left, dukes and bard a switch-hitting catcher. willy hair nighs center and anderson hernandez at second base. >> rob: let's take a look another brad bergesen, only 23 years of age. he loves to pitch here at camden yards. again, the orioles over .500 at home. you can't steal on him. they have attempted to steal a base twice, and they're oh-fer two. again, the orioles, you know, kind of a up-and-down month. but for brad bergesen, 2-07 in the month of june with a very, very low earned run average. >> bob: he misses outside to

christian guzman. 1-0. christian guzman, of course, the orioles know more about him than most players in this lineup because of his years in minnesota. there's a strike. and rob dibble with us for this series and the thing about guzman that i like about him, switch hitter, he hits to the gaps and he has a lot of speed. he really bothers you if he gets on base. >> rob: he has been fantastic. he has within hitting the ball all over the park. for the most part, he just does his best to get on base and set the table for the rest of the lineup. >> bob: bergesen deals and he got him. so he fell behind 1-0. back-to- back-the-back strikes and guzman retired. one away. >> jim: take a look at the oriole defense here. izturis is still out with the appendectomy and waited wieters, the number one draft choice a couple of years ago behind the plate. >> bob: here is nick johnson

playing at first base, another of the veterans on this team. the nationals while trying to go young as they rebuild, they have veterans like guze nan and nick johnson at the top. there's really a balance you have to try to figure out. if you go too young, too quickly, the young players might get overmatched. >> rob: absolutely. nick johnson has done well in the two hole. he is about .36 of off of left- hander this is year. he has just been fantastic. last night he caught a curve ball from john smoltz in the left shin. he had a huge egg on his shin and had to come out of the egg. >> bob: bounced towards short. andino waits on the hop and two men down. >> rob: ryan zimmerman comes up, last night he was unbelieve well the glove. he has been doing it all year. he had a 30-game hitting streak during the season so far, and he is just one of the mainstays of this washington nationals team. he pretty much is the face of the franchise, and there you see him at camden yards, guys. .306. he kind of likes interleague

play. >> jim: i don't know too many hitters that walk into this ballpark and don't like the dimensions. constituent a beautiful walker, but from a hitters' perspective, when you look out at left center, right field, if you hit the ball down the right- field line, you have the high wall to contend with, and we have seen the -- and i have seen zimmerman do this, hit the ball the other way, in the a cheap home run, but you can drive the ball out of right field pretty easily here. >> rob: i talked to brooks robinson about the defense of ryan zimmerman and he loves it. i said who is your favorite third baseman? he said zimmerman mostly bus of his defense and last night was spectacular against the boston red sox. >> jim: it is like all of the great teams i played on. you usually had a gold glover on. -- gold glove. >> bob: and brad bergesen athree up, three down inning. the nationals nail the score and here come the birds in the bottom of the fist! know, maybe other people are content to sit around and wait.

he did a very good job against them he has great stuff a breaking ball and he continues to pitch better every time out there. he went seven innings. work ahead of the hitters. strike one is still the best pitch for ross detwilerer. the last time we talked about him, jim, he throws across his body. he has to continually go towards home plate or else he gets a little lax with his arm. >> jim: i was talking to steve who took over for randy st. claire and he said that is who he is. you try to get a little straight, but he is way over on the first base side. i don't think he is over as much as some other guys, like rick ankiel who is now an outfield were st. louis. he used to be about two feet across his body. >> bob: roberts batting right- handed, and he fouls it off. ryan is hitting at .292. manny acta and his club here in baltimore, again, this is a budding rivalry as each team continues in the rebuilding process. the hope is that as each team improves on the field, the rivalry will improve the box

office. >> jim: not only when they play each other, but when the other teams come in. what i like about detwilerer, it seems like he is pretty much under control and he has a terrific arm. >> rob: he does. and he has great mound presence, something you know a lot about, jim, and some of these young kids come up and they're intimidated and that happened to craig shtam men about the red sox the other night. when it came to crunch time, he went away from his pitch. detwilerer and tw of our younger guy also challenge hitters and i like that. >> bob: 1-2, high and away. 2-2. brian roberts, one of the more patient hitters in the american league and leading off the game, he likes to see as many pitches as he can. four pitches into this at-bat and the 2-2 pitch is a called strike three and roberts knew it. so brian walks away. he is down on strikes. and one away. >> rob: you see him on the inside half right here. he took something off the fastball. maybe a cut fastball. sheer the delivery of detwilerer. watch him as jim palmer says

steps across his body to first base, delivers the ball. but as soon as they tried to change him, he could not pitch at the minor league level. he thanked mick rizzo and all of the people up here who let him go back to throwing his natural way and he got back to the big leagues. >> jim: when you're a number one draft choice, you want them to obviously stay healthy and usually throwing across your body can lead to health problems but if you have done it all your life and he is healthy ychange him. the sixth player in 2007? i don't know if you want to mess too much with him. >> rob: and the player chosen before him? your catcher matt wieters. >> bob: jones fouls it off the right side. no balls and two strikes. >> jim: you talked about that the last time ross pitched against the orioles, only the infield hit by nick markakis. through six innings. >> rob: yes that is the thing. he doesn't know a lot of these lineups. he does now know the orioles because he faced them once. he is going out there now on guts and guile against these big league lineups.

>> bob: willingham is not going to get it and it bounces against the wall and adam jones will head to second base snapping an oh-fer 13 drought with a one-out double. >> jim: and he does it on an 0- 2 pitch. maybe a cutter and just trying to get in. you can see there where bard gets in. the ball get dallas. but when adam jones gets the foot down and you elevate the ball and don't get it way in, there is a big difference between going in and getting in. >> rob: absolutely and that fastball was up and high so he could get his arms extended. it just shows you the quickness of some of these major leaguers' bats. they can hit a 100-mile-per- hour fastball and that was not a good 0-2 pitch. you want to throw something out of the zone or down in the dirt. >> bob: so markakis a chance or an rbi a good spot for nick back in his number three hole. adam jones drawing the attention of detwilerer and it is outside with a breaking ball. 1-0. particular cake is is now batting at .297 coliseuming

closer to .300 as detwilerer trying to get out of this without a run coming in. jones at second base and one down. detwilerer is just 23 years old. last year he pitched in a ball in the carolina league the entire season. that shows you the ability for him to make that jump that quickly. >> it is a little different for a young guy. sometimes you're take twog strikes before they even swing the bat. >> bob: 1-0 to markakis is at the knees for a strike, so says brian knight. >> jim: there are the numbers of lefties and righties. another point to make is you're so better scouted at the major league level. they know about you in the minor leagues, but they know what pitch you throw, how often you throw it, do you get it over? they're pretty well prepared and if you're not, it is your fault, if you are a hitter or

pitcher. >> rob: i just wrote a blog about learning the hitters and their tendencies and what they're looking to do to beat you. you can't just go out there and say this is what i throw. you have to know what the hitters are looking to hit off of you and what the scouting reports against you are. >> jim: they think this ball is high and our northrop grumman pitch track kind of indicates that. >> rob: the american league sit a high ball major league? it -- league? it used to be. >> jim: brian knight thinks it is. he is umpiring tonight. >> bob: detwilerer can't reach it and markakis is safe at first base. there's an infield hit that was as good as drag bunt because he got it past the pitcher. >> jim: that's what he did the last time that ross detwilerer pitched, the infield hit. that one was out to shortstop. this one, a good curve ball rolls over it. if you don't get it, it is in no man's land. >> rob: that is what you call a tough play when you're practicing that at spring training and your pitch ser fielding practice. you have to get over to first

base but nick johnson couldn't get to this and nor can you beat the speed of markakis. that was an easy hit. >> jim: if you sat at home plate and rolled it out there, you couldn't have done it any better. >> bob: oh the orioles have first and third and one down. aubrey huff with an rbi chance. the nationals looking for a ground ball to turn two and end this threat. aubrey did not play in last night's game given the night off in florida. the orioles landed w. -- b. w. i. just before 2:00 and back at it and aubrey is looking to snap an oh-fer 10. >> jim: the nationals get back on the winning track after beating the red sox in, what afull house? >> rob: yes. three record crowds, sell-out crowds a lot of red sox nation there. >> bob: the 0-1 is high. >> rob: i'm sure you guy rings like the nationals, you appreciate the business. thank you for coming. >> jim: yes, i think a lot of people think we want oriole fans, and we centerly do. >> rob: absolutely.

>> jim: i live downtown. the red sox are coming in next week and the traffic won't be too bad because they fly and the new york fans drive. so you always know coming out of the ballpark when the yankees are in town because the traffic is not as good. the red sox they walk. you see the hats. you -- >> bob: you live like two miles from here. you know this traffic? >> jim: of course i do. i thought of you. i was having my blue berries. you know where i'm going in a second. blue berries, strawberries, a little yogurt. >> bob: lined to center field. there is willie harris. he move ins on it and has it for the out. here comes jones to score that is is a sac fly and an rbi and the orioles get on the board first and a 1-0 lead. >> jim: that infield hit does it. if you're huff, and he is .278 life-time hitter to lefties and the minute you get a guy to hitter with two outs, you make it easier for the guy to elevate the ball and that's what they do and the orioles

launched the home run with, what, a slider in the middle of the plate and he hit it about 450 to center. >> bob: 2-1 inside, ball three. >> rob: and of adam dunn, it was surprising to see that was a career high with six rbi's with all of the rbi's he's had this year. second in the national league in walks, and that's not surprising with his power. >> bob: this ball is hit towards the gap and markakis runs it down! so it hung up for him and one away. >> jim: let's take a look at brad bergesen and people are starting to call him the ace. there is your four-seamer and there is the two-seamer, fingers maybe a little bit farther than i held mine, but it certainly works for him. changeup, circle changeup, and we have seen the slider. he variouses the speed on the slider, so it is almost like a swerve. and he throw as lot of strikes, jim. as you know. he doesn't walk a lot of gpu

that is certainly important. >> jim: willingham takes a strike playing left field tonight. and that's low. 1-1 the count. >> jim: the thing about bergesen that is very obvious when you talk to him is that not only is he intelligent, and you see his record, look at the numbers in the month of june, she very intelligent, he understands that there is a process, and he is willing to go through that process, whatev it takes, howeveyou learn, to figure out how to get that batter out in that at-bat and that's all it is about because then the next at-bat, it may take something totally different. >> rob: let me give you an example. i spoke to the general manager of the cincinnati reds, and we talked about bailey who has not been able to pitch well at the big league level. before walt got to cincinnati, and there is a base hit by willingham who has been on fire since coming bam from bereavement lead, he would not listen to his coaches. didn't want to take

instruction. and so now he gets it because a zenfaiingfour, five times he has come up to the major leagues. he goes back to triple-a, he has a 0.50 earned run average. he comes up and has an 8.00 in the major leagues. he is going to start listening to his coaches. you have to start listening to the teachers and make adjustments. >> jim: and they know more than you and i don't think that is ever going to with be a case with brad bergesen. my only suggestion to him is as you progress, for the orioles and the nationals, you want both teams to be better at the end of the year than theyare now even in june or april and may. there is your good breaking ball. so i said about feel. he pitched a game and he has pitched in philadelphia, pitched very well there were some balls misplayed as we look at elijah dukes, jim, and what i was saying is he gave autopsy two-run home run to alex rodriguez and you shut them out for the nix five innings and then you struggled? what did it feel like when you were out of sort ? and that is the only thing experience allows you to do. >> jim: it looked to me those

you were a high fastball guy, what happens is the ball looks like it sinks bu stays on the same plain. he is a fast learner. not overpowering, though. he has to make his pitches. >> jim: and he earned his way here. he was drafted out of high school by the orioles in 2004 and the first two years in proball, he was assigned to short season teams. so he signed with the short season and then went to extended spring training. he stay there had until june. he went right back to short season. he was brought along very slowly, so he had to really earn his way through. >> rob: i came up drafted at 19 after one year of college after a ball my first year, half season, went back to the extended spring training. so what we call group five. so, you know, when i do choose to write the book, it will be group five to the big leagues because that is the lowest level you can go. and then i went to another half season again, and then you start progressing, a ball again, high a, yeah, i have a lot of respect for a guy who has gone backwards and then gone all the way up to the big
