coors banquet has been brewed in one place... and one place only: golden, colorado. it's followed one tradition: use the best high-country barley... and only rocky mountain water. and it's been brewed under one motto: never compromise. now maybe this means we're a little set in our ways. but we know a few guys who will drink to that. coors. the banquet beer. . >> bob: uggla the hitter and then they will bat wes helms in the pitcher's spot unless alberto gonzalez and belliard turn the double play. gonzalez comes in to play short
3:32 pm
and will bat 7th. so dwuz done for the day. and it's mike mcdougal against dan uggla. looks like uggla is doing everything he can to get out of the .220s. he has the pants pulled up and the socks showing. really struggling. wes helms, wildy old veteran, looks like he is checking the skies. uggla 1-for-3 with a base hit today. he is a fastball hitter and macdougal has a goodheater.
3:33 pm
by the way, we have been handed a note on hanley ramirez when he got the those rbis. first national league shortstop in the history of this league to drive in at least one run 10 games in a row. he left arkie vaughn in his wake. once you pass vaughn, boy, you are in your own territory. that guys with a good hitter at shortstop. you have done something in your league that no hitter or guy in your position has ever done before, that's something you can hang your hat on. the 1-1 to uggla.
3:34 pm
flyball hitter as rule. macdougal trying to keep the ball down but he has really missed by a big margin on the two balls he has thrown here in this at-bat. 2-1 the count. >> rob: i think macdougal pitched against baltimore last appearance, sunday. >> bob: i think that's an old fashioned 1-2-3 save, right, the way it was supposed to be?
3:35 pm
>> rob: yes, save number 3. >> bob: this is as much trying to keep macdougal fresh and strong and sharp as it is trying to keep the game right where it is at 3-3. >> bob: out of play right side. in that game, he struck out nolan reimold and then over powered luke scott and then got salazar. we do have rain drops but it's late afternoon in south florida. 2 balls, 2 strikes.
3:36 pm
all three that he has missed with have been bouncers low and away. so he will really overthrowing that thing at 96 but nowhere near threatening the strike zone. >> rob: call it what you want for mike macdougal, whether we are behind or ahead, he tries to repeat his delivery. he has done an excellent job after being picked up. >> bob: you don't want to face wes helms with the bases loaded and one out. uggla who swings and misses a lot is having a pretty good battle here. west helms has probably thought three either situations, knowing he's going to come up with the bases loaded or two
3:37 pm
one and two out or, for that matter, leading off the bottom of the 9th. uggla continuing to hang tough. 3-2 count. there have been eight pitches. rapuano and nieves taking a few shots back there, mostly the catcher. walked him, bases loaded. >> rob: he didn't get a lot of work with the white sox this year. five appearances, 4 1/3. 7 walks in those 4 innings. once again, when we talk about josh johnson and trying to keep
3:38 pm
that hit closed, shoulder closed as long as possible, bring your momentum forward, wil nieves trying to locate his fastball. well, mcdoug will now have to reverse trend of the nationals bullpen finding ways to lose ways to the marlins. in this case, a hallses pitch, a hit and a walk to uggla. and now here is wes helms, their most reliable guy. up the middle, one out and the marlins have the lead t was a good play by gonzalez but hanley ramirez scores and florida has the lead. >> rob: just knocking the dowel pawn by gonzalez saved a second run. check this out right here. mac doug gal knocks this ball down.
3:39 pm
look at that. this saves a second run and we'll -- will still give the chance for the nationals to get out of this. this is an outstanding play by alberto gonzalez just inserted into the game on the double switch. for wes helms, his 16th pitch rbi. all he does is get a ground ball or flyball and get a run home. that's the way he has made his living the last couple of years. here is codey ross who homered off sean burnett last time up to tie the game notice 7th. if the nationals get swept in this series, they'll fly home tonight knowing they had a lead in every game down here. there is an insurance run. >> rob: that hurt.
3:40 pm
>> bob: both of those runs charged to juliantavarez who is in a position to be the losing pitcher here today. in fact, it would be villone, beimel and tferz, the three veteran relievers who would be the throw losing pitchers -- the three losing pitchers. familiar story here in florida. first pitch swinging, john baker. gonzalez out. waves everybody off. and the marlins pick up two crippling runs. at least from the nationals stand point. into the 9th inning, it's 5-3 florida. nted a laptop with...
3:41 pm
...speed, a big hard drive and a good gaming computer... ...for under $1500. we told them you find it, you keep it. - let's check these out. - this is nice. - let's go see the macs. - these are way more money, dude. it's a little too small. maybe we'd rather go with pc. - let's try that for him. - this is good for games too, right? - yea. - both: blu-ray! - we're ready to buy this one. - what!? - announcer: they agree. it's a pc. - we're buying this! - i'm a pc and i'm 11. - and uh, i'm not.
3:42 pm
. >> bob: top of the 9th, nats now down by 2. leo nunez saved the game monday night by retiring josh willingham on a flyball. he relieves dan meyer who is in line for the win unless adam dunn, josh willingham and alberto gonzalez can do something about it here in the
3:43 pm
bottom of the 9th. adam dunn has faced this pitcher once in his career. 0-for-1. he has had a pretty good series. a double and a walk today. so adam 1-for-3 and he is 4-for- 11 with a homer and 3 rbis. we are hoping that the month of
3:44 pm
july will be different than the rest of the year. they did score two 7th inning runs here. but the bullpen, time after time after time this year has not been a able to stop the florida marlins. 2-2 to dunn. that's the first out here in the 9th. josh willingham is a bright light today, rob, 2-for-3 with a walk and two rbis. >> rob: a great day, bob. single, plated a couple of runs.
3:45 pm
josh willingham has a double and a single in this ballgame. >> bob: he is now batting .289. first time the nats played a game in the month of june that josh willingham started in. it took him about a week to start. he was batting aren't .240. rain coming down steadly. you know the marlins want to get this over with. willingham, a little chopper. tough play, bonifacio. oh, no. bonifacio throws out willingham for the second out. >> rob: yeah. >> bob: and manny is going to argue. >> rob: he has to argue about this. he is safe at first.
3:46 pm
manny argues long enough we might have a rain delay here. this is interesting. the umpires don't want the manager on the field right now. the rain is coming hard and you know the marlins want manny back in the dugout so they can get this game over with. >> bob: oh, he is safe. >> rob: he beats it out. this is a -- it's going to -- look at that. marlins, if they win this game have a chance to be one game behind the phillies in the national league east.
3:47 pm
and the adult marlins fans in the ballpark, all 150 of them are all over our manager for leaving the field slowly here. i don't blame manny one bit. that's frustrating. >> bob: here is alberto gonzalez's first at-bat of the day. it only rains evidently when the home team is ahead here. i don't know how they do that. >> rob willie the marlin up there is doing a little rain dance. understand, during the delay, willie the marlin has an umbrella. >> bob: he is a fish. >> rob: he is a fish. >> reporter: he lives wet. >> rob: with a does he do with an umbrella? >> bob: 0-2 to gonzalez.
3:48 pm
johnny and ray are high and dry at verizon fios notice xtra xtra net. ballgame over. 3:37 and then minus the rain delay. time of game of 3:18. we are back with more from south florida in a moment. day. woman over p.a.: this is your final boarding call. all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 miles per hour. almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. starting august 16th, fly southwest airlines from bwi airport to boston logan for just $49 one-way. bags fly free on southwest so our low fares stay low. grab your bag. it's on.
3:49 pm
- ( ding ) - book now at southwest.com. . >> ray: they left the bases loaded. we can't let these guys sit. base hit inside and out. just having a tough time swinging.
3:50 pm
>> johnny: once again, you saw the ball bouncing the right way in florida. let's send you back down to florida. let's send you to bob and rob. >> bob: frustration continues in the rain, whatever the conditions here in florida and the marlins are 9-0 against the nationals this year winning it today 5-3. join us friday, nats in hd. johnny and ray get you going. this is for masn.com. for all the latest news on the nats, this is a presentation of nans. stay tuned. nats extra coming up right now and from the booth. so long for just a while. >> rob: >> johnny one year ago, the nationals knocked off the marlins. one year ago today.
3:51 pm
since that time, the marlins have won nine consecutive games against the marlins welcome and happy to have you along with us. you kind of get lost for words, don't you, ray? >> ray: johnny, you know, a lot of it is about attitude. daggumit, you have to go out and expect to win games. it's obvious the marlins expect to beat us. every game, we jump out to a lead and it just does not hold up. zimmerman threw well. it almost gets nauseated saying starting pitching did well. we hung in there but they end up scoring a run every time we get in that crucial situation late in the 7th, 8th, 9th inning, somebody comes through. 20 come-from-behind wins. 7 of those against the washington ball club. i don't know how to explain it.
3:52 pm
we saw adam in the pre game trying to explain. >> i just explained it. it is a matter of attitude. they believe they can beat us. they go out there and sometimes, they have your number. but it's right there. it's no different than anything whether you are playing horse shoe, tennis, pink pong, if you feel you're going to dominate your opponent, you will. >> johnny: this is our moment. you saw it in the 9th inning, wes helms comes up to face him as a pinch hitter and, boom, a couple of runs come in. gload gets another base hit. macdougal comes in. can't turn the double play. run scores. ross singles, rbi to make it 5- 3. that's big clutch hitting. what i think is the big difference, they get good balls
3:53 pm
to hit in those situations. as you see a little bit later in the breakdown, you see that we are swinging balls out of the strike zone. tavarez takes the loss. he is at 3-6 now. josh willingham a good game, and a good series. we'll talk to bob and rob about that in a moment. zimmerman also 2-for-3 today. rbi. ramirez for florida just can't keep him off the base. what's that? the 10th consecutive game he has at least one rbi? i believe i heard bob say that no other shortstop in the history of the national league has done that. hanley ramirez carrying this ball club. let's go down to south florida and we'll go talk tobob carpenter and rob dibble. when you face a guy like hanley ramirez, you know if he is not going to knock your lights out, he'll do some damage to you. >> ray: we have not been in a
3:54 pm
situation to pitch around him. bob mentioned runners on first and third, maybe not pitching to that guy. listen, the ballgame dictates that. if that is the hottest hitter in the league, he and pujols -- and ramirez is not quite what pujols is yet but he is what alex rodriguez is. he is going to be that. i think he is just as strong. he is faster. this kid is a special. >> . >> bob: . >> johnny: younger. >> ray: he is a younger player. but this kid does a lot of things that many people don't do. dibbs talks about it. you don't hit the ball that way. only occasionally. that's a big man's ballpark. happen lee was leading off and they put him in the 3 hole and he responded by being a big rbi guy. if he has runners in scoring position, he runs an r before i
3:55 pm
type producer. >> johnny: he does whatever it needs to be winning. >> ray: he has a good idea of what he does. when an rbi situation arises, he hits a lot of balls to right field. he says i'm going to let the ball get back. as dibbs points out so many times, throw him a breaking ball and it speeds up his bat and boom, gone. >> johnny: let's head back to florida. one national player that caught people's attention. 2-for-4, not just this game but this entire series, that's josh willingham. >> bob: gee has been on base eight times. and the thing about willingham -- and we have seen zimmerman not great at times and great at others. and thing with dunn. but willingham is even keel. >> rob: he is very consistent, busts his butt day in and day
3:56 pm
out. since returning from bereavement list, he is hitting about .290. you see the position he is learning here at the major league level. today is the huge hit with -- rights here is the huge hit. with a couple of rbis and to get us the lead, 3-2 and almost make a winner of jordan zimmerman. . so josh willingham, whether in the outfield, left, right, does not matter. he is he going to bust his butt. he averaged over .450, the double, run, rbis, just doing a great job. if anybody on our ball club, bob, especially after what happened to him, the tragic death of his younger brother, his only sibling, you know, i had nothing but respect for josh willingham. he has been a great acquisition by the nationals and even better example by the younger players.
3:57 pm
>> bob: as we throw it to you, johnny, i want to share something quickly with you as we talked to josh and his wife. his brother was an organ donor. his heart saved a life. his eyes provided sight to somebody he is and they took his bone mario and that's going to help someone as well. if anybody is thinking about being an organ donor, take some inspiration from the young willingham into and then he has to go out after the bereavement process and try to play baseball which is very, very tough to do. >> rob: it is. it's incredibly tough. my son was born three months premature during my playing career and i had to play three months while he was in intensive care. that's one of the toughe things you have to play through but, again, you have to leave the emotions in the locker room.
3:58 pm
a lot of people are depending upon you. i'm sure it's not easy for him. it's not easy for his wife and his mom and dad. but that's the life of a baseball player. you play baseball seven day as week and ray can tell you that's one of the toughest things on the world. it's tough on marriages. if you want to be a baseball player, there is a little bit of sacrifice involved. >> bob: guys, i have a solution for this. next time, we've move the game up to viera. it will be as many players and it's going to be our ballpark and it has to be better than that. >> johnny: enjoy your day tomorrow and hit them straight tomorrow night. he is right. i grew up in miami. that's my hometown. it rains. the weather is so unpredictable. it's great in the wintertime but in the summertime, you are at the her sew of the great meetologist. >> ray: you are. you know how hard that infield is.
3:59 pm
it's impossible for it to not be hard. the sun bakes it during the day, they wet it down and ends up getting real tight and rain makes it tight. you think that's tough? but if you get that sign 30 minute after rain, it's baked. and anybody ball that comes down there with spinning, johnny, i think that's one of the toughestplaces to play as an infielder in the national league. >> johnny: today, jordan zimmerman, not only did he pitch a pretty good ballgame but pretty good in that batter's box. he goes 2-for-3, gets his first rbi, had the marlins pitching to him. >> ray: he battles every way. we saw him
