with james hasty here with us on espnews. it's not like we don't have anything to talk about. that's what is great about the nfl. let's start thing off in denver. before we went on, i was venting to james about how i think it will be a disaster with the new head coach because he is wreaking havoc. what about brandon marshall and his future? >> well, his future i think is going to remain in denver. we know he has had his brushes with the law and his fair share of off-field issues. keep this in perspective. brandon marshall has caught over 200 passes in the last 2 years. last year he had 104 catches. when you look at his numbers over the last 2 years, 65% of his catches convert in 1st downs. all you can ask for is a guy to help you move the chains. often times you the pad a guy's stat, but this is a guy that is a play-maker.

i think josh childress has to understand players play in the league. if you don't have players, you can't be successful. unless you have a good answer. yes you have stokeley and royal and gaffney. unless you have a players of that magnitude, you may be stuck with him. >> let's move on to the other soap opera. i am talking about the one that brett favre is the leading star for. the situation with the vikings. the vikings players are just waiting. what will happen? management, what is going on there? why don't we have a timetable? >> we know that brett had shoulder issues. he went down to see dr. james andrews in alabama. a doctor who did surgery on me as well. i know how well renowned he is. brett needs to get into camp right away. when it comes to offense, chemistry and timing is

critical. when you start talking about guys like bobby wade and rice in the wide receivers and the tight ends and adrian peterson at running back and percy harvey, you have a responsibility to get in there and develop that timing and that chemistry with those guys. everybody else in the national football league is doing what it takes. as great as brett favre feels he is, you need that time to build that chemistry. as time runs out, brett favre is cheating a lot of those guys the opportunity to raise the lombardi trophy. >> speaking of timetables. what about michael vick's future. what is taking the nfl commissioner roger goodell so long to make a decision on vick? >> he is taking a read and react approach with michael vick. he just completed a 20 month sentence. he will complete a 23 month sentence with his community service hours. we are talking about july 20th

as the timeline when michael vick will be emigible to be reinstated into the national league. roger goodell wants to get a poll of the country to find out whether or not he should reinstate michael vick. i think roger goodell will have to make the most difficult decision he has made yet when it comes to the national football league. does he reinstate michael vick? yes, there may be protests, but i think the young man paid his price. he said i understand the mistakes i made. i am going through the bankruptcy issues. give him an opportunity to play. if he can sit down and meet with animal rights groups, it might help with the segue to return to the national league. right now i would like to see roger goodell get off the fence and make a decision. >> we have good polls on espn.com. we can help out the commissioner.

writer. what has been the reaction around nascar to the judge's decision to lift the suspension? >> well, i think shock may not be a strong enough word. i think a lot of people just assumed that this was just something we were going to have to endure as a paperwork thing and move on to the real trial later. it really caught a lot of people offguard. nascar was caught offguard because there wasn't a strong response afterwards. i don't know that they had a plan to react if it happened. what haced it the truth. what jeremy mayfield said is a little bit of a misnomer. he said i am in the clear now and everything is okay. it's really not. this just a temporary injunction. it will go to court later on. more than likely in the fall. so he is not out the woods. but he is getting to race again. >> with performance enhancing drugs and steroids in general being such a big story in the sports world, what has been the prevailing opinion among

drivers, crew chiefs and owners about this specific situation as it has played out? >> i think everyone's reaction has been they don't want it around. more so than any other sport, this is really not the sport that you can have anyone not at the top of their game. it's not about performance enhancing drugs. but what we really dealt with in the last year and a half are recreational drugs. that's what the drivers don't want to the track and the car owners don't want it near the race track. in another sport, if you are doing greenies, the person you are hurting is you. in nascar, if you are under the influence of anything, you could kill somebody. not only yourself but the people around you. that's why zero tolerance is thrown around a lot. but in motor sports that's what everybody swears by. >> the bulk of the drivers on

the sprint cup circuit, what do they think of the quality of drug testing by nascar? >> it's so new. they all stand behind the zero tolerance policy just like we were just speaking of. it's all so new. nascar only really started a real random drug testing procedure this year, on january 1st. i think a lot of people were stepping back and waiting to see after a season how they felt. in the past, drivers said yeah, we have a random drug testing policy. i have never been tested. now drivers are saying they have been tested 5 times this season already. people are all about it. they don't mind being tested. they want to prove they are clean. >> ryan mcgee. thanks for joining us here on espnews. >> thank you. this will go on for at least another year. we will be talking again. >> coming up on espnews: what a day.
