because he had a choice who he would spend it would be adam jones. he found out last night before game and, boy, did he play up to an all- star level. 3 for 4 with two rbis. he had a very good season and made tremendous strides since last year. look at his numbers, batting .307 with 12 home runs is and 46 rbis i talked to adam about his selection. >> i'm happy i was selected amongst my peers and my manager, joe madden. still a lot of work to be done and happy up to this point. >> amber: is that why it's more special, you were selected by another team's manager and it has to do with fan vote peers and everything like that. >> yeah, especially the manager in our division who saw me this year and lastier, the progress and growth i have been making so it's a cool honor. >> amber: where do you feel you have grown the most?

>> just overall better, a little more discipline. still going out there and swing but, you know, a little more to the swing. just between the ears it's a little better. >> amber: could adam jones be an oriole great one day or 15 years into his career? he is 23 when he was selected to his first all star game and here is how he compared to other. cal ripken premier at 22 and brooks robinson was 23 and jim palmer was 24 so he has good company there. tom >> thank you. the orioles lost 11-4 despite a 4-0 lead in the first half. we will look at the highlights and begin in the orioles third. roberts will come through with an rbi double. zaun scores. >> one of two doubles on the season and looks like robbie is getting the swing back.

very streaky so far this season. last night, brian seemed to get it together again and put the orioles on top. >> adam jones with a shot to score a run and the orioles will round up getting a run on this base hit >> adam jones, three hits on the night. two got rbis for the orioles so it was a big night for jonesy and looks like he is starting the second half with a pretty good game, too. >> 4-2. check this out. ball drop between roberts and markakis and the tie-breaking run scores. >> a little lack of communication cost the orioles big last night. they held in there with a 4-0 lead. the angels came back 4-3 but was a big inning when the ball falls and the dam breaks. >> angel with a three-run 5th and 6-run 8th. they are 1-4 against the angels and 6-15 against the west.

i'm not count him out now and is better than he looks on the mound but i think in the future he will be an asset to us. >> and then that will lead me into my next question -- what about tillman? he is wait in the wings and is pitching well now. >> down the road he may force berken into a relief role, which i think he would be good at. there's talk the last few days tillman is the next guy up and i believe that. he is on deck now, the next young gun that will come up. that doesn't mean it's immediate and trembley was talking about that earlier, you know, this kid is pitching in the futures game and i think he will stay down in norfolk a little while but clearly, even at age 21, is ahead of some guys like pat with a 2.96 e.r.a. and forget the record of 6-5. he department get much run support after coming back from the groin injury. i think they are hitting .315 off patton. tillman clearly is the guy who

3:14 pm
they're getting something out of hip. and he is out of options. i think he would stay. salazar is only here because of the appendectomy and is here without a position and out of options. dave trembley loves his bat on the bench snap good bunch hit we are pop and runs and place hard, doesn't have to be toll to rush. now we're going back to berken again. maybe he goes because his next turn is thursday and then the all star break. they don't nieve five starting pitchers now so you could send him down because he has options and when you need the fifth starter you can decide if it's him or tillman or whatever. maybe berken is the guy. they could get away with 11 pitchers. >> tell us about the 16-year- old killed out of the dominican sought by the pirates but the most recent story is sought by the orioles. >> they love him. he worked out for three days. he has a swing like cabrera,

thank you for joining us as the orioles begin the second half of the year. last night was their 81st game of the season and this is a season of transition that continues as we expect it will continue even more. since andy mcphail took over as president of baseball operations two years ago, there has been a traumatic shift in the personnel not only at the minor level but the major league level. since andy took over, 17 of the 25 players active today were new, not in orioles uniforms when he took over. of the players on the current roster, nine have been draft and develop by the orioles including three of the five starting pitchers, the three rookie in the rotation. joined today by jim palmer as always and jim, with the turnover of the team, question know it will continue. what is the next step for mcphail as you want to get first competitive and ultimately in contention? >> we go to the bottom of the list, the three out of five starters. hernandez pitched well a couple of night ago. obviously you have berken who pitched yesterday and i mean,

13 runs and balked 13 times -- everybody pace attention. there's more pressure on you in the sense they will really work on you. so we have seen up and in and breaking balls away. still been pretty disciplined as we look at luke scott. >> jim h: fouls it back. the other hitter i notice with the orioles as of late that is getting different pitches andino because she playing every day so there's more of a book on him. not as many fastballs, especially in early at-bats. >> jim p: roberts has been able to hit with runners in scoring position, right at the .300 mark. it hovered around .250, but to me he proved andino is good a shortstop as you need at the major league level. if anybody needed somebody to pickett, luke scott at the plate and you can see the numbers he had, with power -- robert proved he is the big

league shortstop. can he prove he played as the utility player you won't get the same at-bats izturis has when he comes back. >> jim h: napoli is the catcher behind the plate. 0-2 and fouled back. saunders out of springfield, virginia, drafted out of high school by the phillies but he wanted to go to college and he was a big-time pitcher at virginia tech in his home state and the angels eventually drafted him in the first round in 2002. he was the 12th overall pick. fouls it off. the one thing about his number that jumped out at me -- i hear you talk about how many starts does the starting pitcher get a decision in because that means he is likely around deep in games. he made 80 starts and has 60 decisions in his career. he has 40-20 in the big leagues. >> jim p: he pitches deep in the game and one of our pnc
3:54 pm
scouting reports keys to the game was basically here's not a thrower but a pitcher. that's why he was the 12th guy pick in 2002. >> jim h: frayed labrum which is a lot of pitchers have. he didn't pitch in 2003. >> jim p: he has an idea, except in texas. [ laughter ] when you have given up 12 home run in 24 1/3 innings -- arlington is a big ballpark until you start pitching. he was flat and gave up home run. >> jim h: scott battling here and is 2-2 and fouls it off. texas in the division with the angels so they get to see them quite a bit. >> jim p: his average on the road, even with a couple of bad outings, 15 against the angels down there. he averaged almost six innings -- 6.88,in the 7th inning. >> jim h: luke scott worked

count to 3-2. one out and none on. trying to extend his hitting streak but get on base. he hit six here's the 3-2. curveball and inside. ball four. wrapped around the plate. that is a call often the pitcher will get. saunders looks upset he didn't get it. >> jim p: you knowvery clondyo ho plate umreto establish early. let's take a look. see, it's inside gary darling, for the first time i maybe a week or so, we're getting an umpirewill make plate because t were some really big he baltimo nice job thsday night. the last couple of jobs the last couple of nights, maybe the strike zone wandered a little bit. maybe darling will be consistent this afternoon. >> jim h: mora back in today.
3:56 pm
he didn't stain the first game of the series. j p: kind of interesting. hunterys him three steps to the right and rivera place straight away and left so there's a huge gap in left center feel for melvin. h: 1-0. outside. good eye. the orioles are being very patient against joe saunders, who doesn't walk a lot, averages three per game. not a strikeout pitcher by today's standards, averages five per game but has the ability to strike you out. of course he doesn't want to be pitching in these count. i don't know if too many do. he can pitch from behind. in order, throw breaking balls -- in other words, throw breaking ball. back to saunders. go to second. back to first and out there. so 1-6-3, the double play ends it and the orioles down in the 2nd. 1-0 orioles lead.

>> guerrero played in 40 for the year. look at this last night. >> jim p: well, it's almost on the ground. not only was it a home run, it was a monstrous home run over the bullpen and i thought -- [ indistinct ] -- maybe it was the oriole bullpen a couple of years ago. he had a 2-1 lead and all of a sudden it evaporated. he has done that quite often.
3:59 pm
395 lifetime home runs, trying to get 396 right there. i saw him in spring training in ú96 or ú97 and felipe alou was coach in canada. >> jim h: foul. >> jim p: it was against the orioles when he fouled off -- broke his foot. was going to make the opening day roster after play in aa the year before. he was hitting them over the towers and right center and left center. alou said, not only can this guy hit -- he was putting on one of the great exhibitions i have ever seen in 40-something years. he said, see those pines? if i told him to go climb those pines he would do that. >> jim h: curveball. left center feel. not that deep. jones moves over and angles to protect himself from the sun. and he has it for the out and one
