somebody gets hurt but rivera is having a terrific year. going back where he used to be before he broke his leg. you know, that was after the 2006 year when he hit 23 home runs and went to winter ball and broke his leg and it has taken him awhile to not only get in the swing of things but get healthy. >> jim h: how about the side arm curveball? where did that come from? >> he had it a couple of spots before. >> jim h: popped up on fastball. huff will move in and two men down. the one thing that you see with the approach of rich hill today, he is pitching backyards where what he was pitching which now is the normal fastball in terms of what the pitchers try to do. >> jim p: i said, okay, he steps to the side but i saw real good fastball and we haven't seen that on a consistent basis so he worked hard with rick kranitz to try to, you know, he said bob

gibson, big wind up. i said, you're a big guy. you don't have to pump your arms although you want to get going. he was so passive. i think he was more worried on what happened on the backside of the rubber than what happened when you actually throw the baseball so he worked very hard and you know, you give up nine runs against the red sox and you don't get a loss. and the orioles come back to win it. it's a negative, obviously, with the earned run average and whatever but i tell you, he didn't go away. he worked hard. he worked on the windup yesterday, unusual a day before you pitch. >> jim h: inside. 2-1. talking about rich hill and pitching backyards, here are numbers. after 1-0 when it should be difficult, around .221. you're supposed to be aggressive and in control. >> you're supposed to be making good pitches. he was having a horrible year. we saw manny when the orioles

were in milwaukee. he isn't the pitcher he was last year. there's a walk and obvious i may think about walking napoli because he is hitting .400 against left handers so you pitch around him with a one- run lead. >> jim h: the walks hurt rich hill, averaging six per game. here's morales. he will bat right. he is hitting it .283 and you see a nine-game hitting streak going. rich hill is averaging per nine innings, 16. 5 base runners for game. 16.5 and the moral of that story is they can't score if they don't get on. against hill they are getting on. >> jim p: that's what happens afterwards. how do they hit with runners in scoring position and are you attacking the strike zone. kranitz and alan dunn were in the organization so they know rich. any time you have some success

two years ago, you know, he wins 11 games with a lot of strikeouts and hurts his back last year with a calf problem and lou, short fused, 99 wins. whatever, 98, the cubs won. he is in the minor league. confidence shot so then he had the elbow problems early on in spring training so it has been a tough year. the one thing say they said he is not a command guy. the strike zone for him may be bigger. just getting it over and then hoping your stuff is good enough. >> jim h: back-to-back throw with the catcher at first base who has two steals for the year. the orioles have had two throwing errors on pickoff attempts. guthrie on his start and last night, bass. 1-1 chopper. tough play. they will have to hurry. throws off balance and got him! morales and scioscia will come

well, what do you do on the fourth of july weekend in southern california? head over to santa monica beach and you jump into the pacific ocean and enjoy a beautiful day at the beach. or you show up here at angels stadium and watch the orioles and angels. birds have a 1-0 lead on brian roberts leading off the game. >> jim p: a lot of people do that. they averaged 40,000 per game at anaheim. >> jim h: saunders miss low to wieters. andino and roberts to follow. wieters sat out last night. zaun had a good night behind the plate. 1-0. down and in. wieters back in the line up and really holing his own as he tries to adjust at this level. >> jim p: he does. he has a high kick. the throwing has gotten better. he will even get better as he feels more comfortable and you have to come up and learn your staff and the opposition. kind of a mark man. you can see some of the home

runs, left half handed and both of them to left center feel. he runs pretty well far guy of his size so he will be a four- tool player. committee throw, catch, hit for average and probably hit for power. there's four of the five. the only other one is can you, you know -- what kind of running ability you have. >> jim h: he is patient and watches walk. >> jim p: he said, i like the stroke because he doesn't overswing and let's the ball travel. just think about it. you get all that money and all of a sudden you're a mark man, the number one prospect. david price is number two. you play the game the right way. you take the walks when they're presented to you. so he is on the cover of just about every -- you know, baseball-type of -- there's andino trying to bunt his way

on. there's a tendency to try to overachieve but i think wieters is, from early on, played the right way and will continue to at the major league level. >> jim p: and there's the other part of being a major league player for the first time, how to you fit in with your teammates? i mean, in particular with everything you just described -- here's the guy who has been anointed come in the clubhouse. >> jim h: andino, tapped towards second base slowly. ken rick drops the ball and everybody is safe! another example of the player thinking of two instead of settling for one and on the other your, something going with two on and no outs. >> jim p: he thinks of getting the lead runner and right here, uh-uh. this ball just hit too slowly so again, get somebody out. the 1-0 game. that's an out. except it's an extra out for the orioles. we saw last night.

they could score runs. they're not up for the leaders but they're -- number ten in runs scored so, hey, get an out and kendrick doesn't do it. >> jim h: roberts bunts. it goes foul. in this series you have two of the best leadoff men in the american league and here's the comparison, jim, between the orioles' roberts and figgins of the angels. >> jim p: they scored 60 runs to lead the american league. so you can see figgins obviously a higher batting average now because brian has been one of these short slumps, extra base hits. we give to it roberts, stolen bases to figgins so far although brian is capable of stealing 40 to 50, which he has done on occasion. doubles for brian. he is 48, 50, 52. finished second to dustin pedroia of mvp in the american league that led with doubles last year. i would still like him -- not in this case and i don't know if you need to sacrifice -- i

just know if roberts would bunt and somebody, eight or nine years ago, toll him how important it is to be a leadoff guy, his average would go up and runs scored would go up and mean more to the ballclub. so far, dave trembley or the orioles haven't been able to get to him. i don't mean take the bat out of his hands because he is an extra base guy. sometimes you're tired. bring the infeelers in and hit it by him and all of a sudden you're more productive. >> jim h: 2-1. low. ball three. small ball as a team can help you and here's a perfect example. angels tied for first in the west. they're in small ball. orioles, not so much. >> jim p: going from first to third is misleading although they do it so well. mike sciocia said you run through the base and decide whether you're going to the next base. that's what you have to do to go from first to third. >> jim h: that's going to get down for a base hit. wieters will score and andino

to third. roberts goes to second. the throw home -- he is safe! at the plate! he got the foot in before the tag of mike napoli so roberts comes through to drive in two and has all three rbis and the orioles now with a 3-0 lead. >> jim p: that's why you don't always sacrifice. so right here you can see -- there's your double cutoff man and watch this ball short-hop because if it's not a short hop, napoli doesn't come out in front of the plate. we saw him if the other night. he took the plate away so great slide by robert andino because he has to come out if the throw is further -- and it's difficult to do sometimes -- block the home plate because mike sciocia did that as well as anybody and he is the manager of the angels. >> jim h: adam jones and there are numbers as he improved to all- star status through the first 81 games of the year. 12 home runs and only four a year ago. roberts takes off and has third

base stolen easily as saunders didn't give him a second look. >> jim p: that won't make mike sciocia very happy. certainly dave trembley will be all smiles because now -- see how they play it when they're down by three runs. looks like they will play back. a lot of times you will see, actuallying bring the infield in and make mike jones a better hitter. if he was at second base, jones has to give himself up. now he can become an rbi guy and a power guy. >> jim h: still nobody out in the inning and try to get a ball hit. fouls it back for roberts -- by the way, his second steal in the last 12 games. 17th on the year. he is so good at stealing third base and really has the knack for getting the jump. >> jim p: it's very difficult. i remember when rickey henderson and amos otis -- they make you almost balk because they get the jump. it's hard to hold them on.

a chance to win that day and it's very difficult to average six runs per game. curveball is ripped. that's a base hit down the line. abreu will score. torii hunter heads to second base. he got a hanger on an 0-2 pitch and he rips it for a double. and just like that, it's a one- run game. >> jim p: kranitz will come out and talk. there's the deal about curveballs. you can say -- you called it exactly right. it hovered around the hitting zone and the all star for the third time, torii hunter, doesn't miss it. that's why we talk about fastball command being so well and so important because you can command your fastball on a daily basis, every fifth time out, better than a curveball. you want to throw your fastball in and out of the middle of plate and then when you get ahead, 0-2, if you're going throw a breaking ball, throw it

in the dirt. we have seen rich hill having problems doing that. so again, he hasn't adjusted. the angels adjust to climb in the ball game. >> jim h: still only one out. kendrick led in the inning. four straight hitters reach and here's impureerer roe. >> jim p: the only way to work on the fastball command is a commitment to it and part of that is work on your wind-up so you can do that. and right now rich hill is incapable of doing that through the first three months of the season. >> jim h: guerrero takes the strike. i guess is question is, does he throw so many curveballs because she in love of the curveball or because he doesn't have confidence in the fastball? >> i think that's the case. >> jim h: 0-1. it's popped up. shallow center field. jones will have to come in. that hung a bit but vladimir didn't get the good wood.

scott. 2-0. there's a strike. luke without a doubt a streak hitter but has been much more consistent this year. the ups and downs have not been as dramatic. >> jim p: well, he is hitting well against left-handed pitching. .215 last year. anything over that is bonus but he is healthy. he is getting a lot of quality at-bats. i remember when i did "monday night baseball" and darryl strawberry was coming up. the third year when he hit 39 home runs -- 3 out of 5. of course darryl was very young. luke was more of a veteran. if you're not healthy -- and last year achilles problems on the push-off leg -- it's tough to be as good as you want to be. he changed the windup and made same justments. >> jim h: pops it up. aybar out behind second base. and has it for the out. one down in the oriole 4th

sawners, 28 years old now. saunders, 28 years old now. a big guy, 6'3," 210. fouls it back the other way. >> jim p: that's your home run pitch. it's not he is trying to hit a home run. he is trying to hit as hard as he can in a hitter's count 2-1 and drive it right center or left center. this year, maybe not getting to the pitches he used to get to. whether you're 27 or 37, you have to prove you can hit. you have to do it every time they pencil you into the lineup. it's now 45 games plus today. and now 171 at-bats since his last home run on may 7 against minnesota. outside, ball three.

[ indistinct ] the orioles would love to somehow get saunders out of the game and get in the angels bullpen, even though last night the angels bullpen was very effective. the numbers suggested you would rather face the relievers than this guy. they are dead last in the american league, a team e.r.a. amongst the bullpens. 5.15. >> jim p: over the last 21 games -- 25 games they were 17- 9. they're r.a. is much better. three -- their e.r.a. is much better. 3 runs per game. there's no reason they shouldn't succeed. you have to locate your pitches and you have to get the experience. they have some power arm in the bullpen. the problem for them has been, when you lose your -- your guy you know is going to come in
