and won't be conserve crazy and work on the fastball and work on the change up. that will be a work in progress. >> jim h: left it out over the lte. morales singles. the tyn is on with one down in the 6th inning. i'm trying to think of a pitcher recently coming through the orioles that had that type of curveball and the only one i could think of -- he certainly at one time caliber pitcher hill was -- i was thinking of dubose with the breaking ball and he wasn't here all that much and before that, may have been rick christmas. >> jim p: pretty good analogy. this may be -- give him enough time. nowadays the slider seems to be the pitch of choice. you don't see as many of the big overhand curveballs. >> jim h: this is a matter of

>> jim h: he singled his last at-bat. >> jim p: look towards this game. you hope you can get out of the 6th but johnson, who has been struggling, is key if they will win on a sunday. and more offense. >> jim h: and runs. they couldn't do it last night. had a 4-0 lead and the angels scored eight runs over their last two at-bats to break it wide open. bass had a real tough night last night. >> jim p: yeah, i think he is pretty much cooked because of his arm. a lot of innings -- not commanding his stuff. >> jim h: towards third. mora with a high hop to second. back to first. not in time. the lead runner retire and two men down. >> jim p: melvin played like you're supposed to with a one- run lead. make sure you get the first out. high chopper right here. you know you won't get a double play so make sure you make a

hits. now an rbi. and two runs scored. >> jim p: it goes back to what it talked about. if you ask matt albers which spot do you spot better -- oh, my ticker. he throws a good curveball. i don't know if he did it on purpose but it was good. it was down and away. took something off. the next one is right to the bat. so i think it's when you get -- you come in and it's tough coming in to relieve. it's a crucial situation. to me, his sinker is better than the breaking ball but he gives up the tying run on a curveball. the second one in a row. the hitter sees it and doesn't execute the pitch. not a very good pitch. >> jim h: just does get a piece to stay alive. >> jim p: are you a groundball pitcher? oh, yeah, that's how i make my living. he doubled to tie the game and if you have one of the better hitters in the american league get a base hit you will be

trailing. so i think that tie into what you were talking about, how seven and eight and nine -- you don't go with the strength. >> jim h: breaking ball fouled off. to me, that's something every pitcher should go to the mound and completely understand. this is the big leagues. >> jim p: i think what happens, though -- if i'm aybar i will play him a little bit to left and, you know, pitch him like -- the same way. figgins we have seen here -- probably a better fastball hitter and why they try to get him out with breaking balls. >> jim h: and he got him. figgins swing through it as the fast ball gets him but the angels rally back again. head into the 7th, 6-6. and a few things we want to pay for. on top of it all, we're still trying to put away some money for the future. with the wish list, we can save up for anything we want. and still have enough to cover the day-t0-day. plus, the savings engine helps our money grow.

performed on this lovely sunday afternoon. and the 6-6 game. each team with six hits. angel have committed a couple of errors and of course big news off the field for adam jones, name to the american league all- star game. let's look at the lineups. here's the american league. jason base at boston, first full year with the red sox, will play. hamilton coming back off the d.l. and here's the national league team in st. louis. molina will catch in his own ballpark. ramirez wins at short. beltran has been on the d.l. and brawn of milwaukee and ibanez is also on the d.l. for the national league.

>> jim p: manuel against joe metz. joe has a lot of pressure with the line pickup you don't win but so does charlie. always a great game. i had a chance to be on six all star teams so adam will have a good time. >> jim h: adam jones today found out he was name to the all star team and tomorrow he will play in seattle. the organization that traded him away. he can go back and he is not this type of person but he can go back and kind of feel good about himself >> jim p: gloat on it, i mean? >> jim h: and the second day up there, tuesday, bedard, traded along with two others, will be on the mound. albers still on the mound. a little bit of a they for some reason. a little bit of a delay for some reason. over the over-under on the beach ball. >> jim h: i haven't seen one

[ cheers and applause ] >> jim h: albers walks the potential go-ahead run on four straight pitches to begin the 7th inning. and now he will go to work on torii hunter, who was also name to the all- star team. his rbi double in the 3rd. capped that three-run rally for the first and diving back is abreu who has surprising speed even at this stage of his career. 17 stolen bases on the year. >> jim p: he has been a good fit. didn't sign until late. i think $15 million with the yankees. they got him for $5 million. hunter doesn't like that call. it's a luxury if you're mike sciocia and have a guy that can steal a base.

darling didn't think so. >> jim h: called it a strike. >> jim p: exactly. where matt wants to be. see if it makes a difference getting ahead. >> jim h: a little lower this time. >> jim p: that's a bad idea. you want to be at the same level. >> jim h: right. [ cheers and applause ] all the way to the wall! abreu is heading to third and will be held there and on at second base with a double is torii hunter can here come the angels. that ball sailed on adam jones and he couldn't get back on it. >> jim p: you try to take a direct line where you think it's coming down and again, ball is carrying today. he hammers the ball and it -- again, it looks like he misplayed it but that's not the case. the ball was hit that hard. maybe it would not go as far but went further than he thought and because of that, array you doesn't score -- abreu doesn't score. 7-6 angels and hunter is at second. >> jim h: this is scary for

the four infielders because now dave trembley as the infield playing in -- no, they're going to walk him. >> jim p: what is scarier is walk guerrero. heed a home run, two-run blast last night but you're walk him to get to a guy that comes in .351 with runners in scoring position and that's river a. he hit eight home runs. .412 in july. this is what happens when you get into tie games, especially on the road one where you try the win them. maybe set up a double play ball. >> jim h: here's rivera waiting on deck. ray ready in the bullpen and is watching to make sure if trembley makes a change. ball four to loads the bases. so the orioles infield will not have to face guerrero drawn in. and here comes dave trembley so

indistinct ] -- the aaa fay eh fail yacht of the orioles. look at the number. a fastball to hit. that's what he will be sitting on and any time you get into this situation, there is the oriole bullpen in the last seven games. they had an implosion last night. right here, a fastball count. fast ball hitter. and the guy that does have three pitches. was 95 and 96 earlier in the week. throws him a breaking ball. a gutsy pitch right there. that's what the pull ben bullpen is about. you know the hitter is looking for a fastball. it amazes me they can do that. >> jim h: 2-1 the count on rivera, who is hitless today. fastball. 2-2.

and once you do throw a breaking ball and the fastball count, what chris did 2-0, all bets are off if you're rivera. >> jim p: you have a splitter now. he is looking for a strike out. chris ray, before the tommy john, was a strikeout type of guy and was low and away with the best of them. baseball terminology. >> jim h: i like that. you're a thesaurus. foul ball. just got a piece. >> jim p: i guess the dilemma is, okay, i throw him a slider. didn't make a great pitch. he was looking fast ball. i have the splitter. a strikeout groundball play. and as you mentioned, the infield was halfway in so anything hit hard -- this is a fast infield. they're coming home. >> jim h: from 2-0 to 2-2.

[ crowd cheering ] this is what is playing on the road in a tie ball game. everybody making a bunch of noise. >> jim h: 3-2 the count. and he walks him. a breaking ball on the 3-2 pitch to forces in bobby abreu with the go-ahead run. strategy here now that they trail. now the infield up the mill and looking for two up the mill to try to fend off an even bigger inning. they were enticed to force the runner at the plate. >> jim p: i never understood the strategy, not dave trembley, of walking bases loaded to get a forced play at home plate because -- [ indistinct ] -- you will get two more at-bats. it adds more runners on place and puts pressure on the reliever. this is very difficult situation. as good as guerrero was -- two days ago you didn't have any place to put napoli. a lot of pressure on a pitcher who has been struggling. >> jim h: right. it's not like chris ray three years ago where all of a sudden no arm injury or tommy john surgery.

[ cheers and applause ] ball three. >> jim p: rivera is at the plate now. this guy in launch mode. he hits home run once every 16 times up. he will look for a fastball and tries to hit it somewhere. [ crowd cheering ] >> jim h: walks with the base loaded. there have been five batters in this inning. only one has put it in play. dave remmedly trying to get matt wieters' attention and talk to ray. >> jim p: morales is a good hitter. you have the lefty warming up. all of his home runs -- all 14 -- are from this side of the plate. i cannot imagine after what transpire with chris ray --

away. six runs in the 8th to put it away. 8-6 here. nobody down. guerrero at third. rivera at second. napoli at first. and mar railless is at the plate. morales is at the plate. fouled back. >> jim p: we were saying what happens to the bullpen when the starting pitching doesn't go deep enough -- guys overuse. all of a sudden again, not the arm speed you normally have. so you try to come up with some way to throw strikes and can't do it. it happens every year if your starters are not where you like them. almost feel like you need a couple of pitchers in the bullpen. >> jim h: 0-1. 0-2. there was a point earlier this year where the orioles went with the 8.5 bullpen. that leaves you with a 3.5

bemple. not preferred. >> jim p: not by any means. [ cheers and applause ] >> jim h: reimold is there for the out. tagging guerrero. here is the throw to the plate. that will allow the runner from second place refer a to get to third. there should be an error because rivera didn't break fully towards third and bounced away from more >> jim p: a nice tag by the angel runner and and here, melvin casually tries to short- hop it. wieters back at home plate. >> jim h: a sac fly and rbi as guerrero scores. now 9-6. >> jim p: you're taught the first thing you do is go line on a live drive, go to the bag. and guerrero does that.

>> jim h: the error has been charged to reimold. on the throw. that short-hopped mora. it looked like wieters was gunning towards the plate and it would go to wieters. but melvin tried to short-hop it and it slowed down and rolled towards the plate, allowing rivera to move up. kendrick now. foul. >> jim h: the book is closed on albers. he is the pitcher of record for the orioles. two men on base, the responsibility of ray. 9-6 game. the orioles saw a 4-0 lead

vanish in back-to-back games. a scoop by wieters there and a ball in the dirt. there's rivera at third. napoli is the runner at first. only one base hit in this inning. four walks. one of those intentional to set up the force. and back-to-back bases loaded walks to force in runs. the orioles' bullpen e.r.a. is 12 in the american league. 4.64 and you saw the numbers over the last seven game. they have not been good. 2-2 bounced down the third base line. >> jim p: is you're one or two games to get in the topnotch except the angels came in the

14th? and the e.r.a. looked like it was getting below five runs game. it's now elevated. >> jim h: 2-2 on kendrick. sliced foul. first base side. the red sox have the best bullpen in the american league. and boston first place in the east. seattle is the best pitching overall. not surprising their bullpen is second. >> jim p: and the red sox won today 8-4. yankees beat toronto 10-8. >> jim h: 2-2 pitch. high pop, shallow center. rivera will tag. rivera holds as jones fires back in. there's the second out of the inning.

and hendrickson is an out from getting out of it without further damage. three runs have scored in this inning. >> jim p: the only time boston can't pitch is when they have 10-1 leads. and they run off the field with only two outs. >> jim h: right. >> jim p: a bizarre game. >> jim p: good for the orioles because they came storming back. >> jim h: here's erick aybar, the eighth angel to bat in the 7th inning. high fly ball. markakis is there. and he puts it away for the out. but a big inning because of walks. and the angels have the lead, three runs score. two come in on bases-loaded bachs.

and he catches that ball easily before he hits the ground. so he throws the hand up there -- and keeps coming. ball carries because that's what it has been doing all afternoon. nice at-bat by melvin. just nothing to show for it. here's wieters, one down. a huge play by torii hunter. instead of two on and none out, runner has to hold at first and melvin mora is retired. wieters has singled and walk and homered. now a five-game hitting streak going. and that is inside. ball two. and oliver now behind matt wieters. homered batting right-handed to right field. right center field.

ground ball. a base hit. figgins try to run it down and does successfully to keep luke scott at second base. good hustle there by figgins. wieters has a three-hit game. that ball was smoked and hit the base. >> jim p: let's look here. hot shot. a double if it doesn't hit the base. and then it's going to go straight up in the air. figgins will go chase it. >> jim h: that torii hunter play is even bigger. jason bulger, the right hander, one of the set-up guys. i would imagine maybe -- because not only the result of two guys on but the out you talked about, jim. mike sciocia looking at how do you want wigginton? lefty or righty? i think they will go with the right-hander as mike makes his

way out. slow walk to the mound. there's the signal. so oliver will leave. he goes 1 1/3 innings. his defense help in this inning as torii hunter robbed melvin mora. two on and one down. bulger coming on in the 8th. two beers! you got it! are you insured? do you know when your beer is perfectly cold? or do you risk drinking a warm one?

[ crowd booing ] >> jim p: that was a good curveball. the perfect 0-2 curveball. just off the corner. and there you go. held up nicely. that traveled a long way. mike scioscia didn't think so. he said on thursday varitek swung yesterday on that real questionable pitch when the red sox came back from a 5-1 deficit. i said, you're right but they cant call it. >> jim h: 1-2. high pop-up. aybar going up. charge in and for the out. wigginton is retired. two down. >> jim p: another nice curveball. couldn't quite get to it. and for the angels, for the a formidable team -- as we look at torii hunter. he got out of the way. it's guys like bulger that will have to step up and we have seen that over the course of the series. you made a good point where

they have pitched very well lately. >> jim h: they have not score in the series against the angels' bullpen. brian homered leading off the game. he has grounded out and struck out. >> jim h: checked swing. that one is low. bulger is 30 year old.

this is his fourth separate season pitching well with the angels. he has not had a full season in the big leagues. the majority of those seasons the past three years spent in aaa. outside. >> jim p: you mentioned he is 30. when you get signed come out of what -- valdosta state and you're the 22nd pick -- i bet he threw some fire. no doubt about that. >> jim h: another curveball to the outside corner. that seeps to be his favorite breaking battle. it's coming down. almost like a 12-6 curveball. on the clock. brian has seen everything he has and the count is now 2-2.

postgame. >> jim p: the orioles were 12- 25 on the road and averaged 3.89 runs on the road and 5.3 at home so again, this is the way you want to play. how do you do that? it's nice to have two of your hitters, you know, as players of the game. i think you like to throw a pitcher in there once in awhile. >> jim h: this has been a plethora of run support for a road game. >> jim p: yes, but not enough of a plethora.
