double. we saw a shot of stammen after the double-play in the 8th inning, rob, kind of walking away shaking his head like we had a chance. he kept them in the ball game. all he's doing is getting better each time he take this mound. >> rob: yeah. and you know what? you look at it and you say, from a distance, well, the nationals lost another ball game. well, yeah, an all star guy gets his 11th winner against you, shut down a really good dodger team before in the nationals. threw another gem tonight, but then you lob at your guy, craig stammen. less than 10 starts in the major leagues. he goes out there, only one guy reached third base. 16 out of 25 first pitch strikes. he was a master tonight. and that's the people line. he went out there, followed on great olsen and lannan start. the young pitching is getting bether with every start. the defense is behind them now. they made double-plays. nick johnson made great plays at first. nyjer morgan is running stuff down in the outfield. so the team is getting
11:01 pm
stronger. now, the outcome is not what you would like, but the bottom line is, a 1-0 shutout at coors field. i think that's an excellent game for the nationals. >> i couldn't gray with you are more, buddy, as detailed as you are, you have watched this ball club, can see it grow, the changes, best case scenario for our club in the second half. >> best cares scenario, you play .500 in the second half. you're still going to have some problems, not going to be as talented as the mets, braves, and phillies. no more interleague, so don't have to worry about that stuff. bottom line is, you continue to get better. some of these younger players are auditions for next year's team. so for, you know, ray, you and i, we both know this, you're always auditions for somebody, so you have to go out there and play hard, and these guys are playing hard. they're not quitting. i was here, had to do my radio show early today. this team was out on the field, almost every man at 2:00 in the afternoon after a very long plane flight last night. so these guys have not quit.
11:02 pm
they go out there, they play hard for manny acta and his coaching staff, night in and night out. so for the second half, you can try to play .500, maybe play a little above .600 ball. you know you're not going to the playoffs, but these guys have not quit, and they still have a lot of baseball to play. >> bob: yeah, going to be an interesting second half of the season. >> good result for a team like this to hang in there with a pretty good hitting team in this ballpark. >> i agree with rob. i see everything improving, and i see us in ball games. it all goes back to pitching president we made one error at shortstop. defense and pitching. you're go to be good in games. feel good about your ball club and your chances to win. i think our hitting will be sporadic. i know we can score runs in
11:03 pm
bunches, but we have a lot of guys that don't strike out and make contact. >> let's take a look at correct's work tonight on the mounted out at coors field. a lot of the rookies hitting the ball in the ground tonight, and a heck of a performance by craig stammen. >> well, he threw the ball well all night long. we'll go right to the first inning. he strikes out -- pace hit to right field single, after he struck out fowler, then we saw the double to left center field by olsen, to drive in the run. all-time leading rocky rbi go. no surprise. then he gets ground ball double- play to tulowitzki. that was the theme of the night.
11:04 pm
then strikes out marquis on a very good breaking ball. just kept not really in that big of trouble, but pitch. himself out of trouble. 6th inning, bars leads off with a double, and then helton doubles, 3-6. and just couldn't do it much better. 98 pitches, 2-1 bomb/strikes almost. and doesn't walk many, doesn't strike out a lot of people, doesn't have overpowering stuff, but nasty stuff. that heavy fastball that rob talked about that sinks, and they pound it into the ground. >> unfortunately he has to take the loss. now 1-4. how about the slick glove work tonight of a nick johnson. we're going to come back and
11:05 pm
11:07 pm
well, jason marquis showed tonight he's the page league's top winner. he has 11 victories tonight as he heads to the all star break in solution. he was almost unhittable. >> he was, johnny. this is the best i've ever seen him, and i've seen him pretty good. he was sinking that fastball and keeping it there. ground ball after ground ball. 14 of them tonight. morgan, first at bat, hit ground ball, and, as we see, fly ball to center feed there. but he just had the breaking ball going. he had so many good pitches that he made in and out. he was able to get ground balls
11:08 pm
to second, to short, to third, 15 in a row. another ground ball there as he jams everybody. has he has a good slider, but he lives to use that fastball, 70% fastballs. there is one, he runs in and gets jammed on. nice play there. and he was just on all night long. we did could not a lot with him. he wad opportunities to, and when we did, we justify couldn't cash in. >> you see there the first five hit next nationals line-up all had base hits on him tonight, but they couldn't get a run across in this 1-0 shutout. he came in the ball game with an era, his lowest in five seasons in the big leagues. that will go down a little bit tonight. how would you hit a guy like this? >> well, i think you have to take him to right field. the only way that you don't hit ground balls is don't roll over on ground balls, and sinkers, they're going to sink the ball in on you. with me, i moved off the plate, inside outed the ball, tried to hit the ball right at the
11:09 pm
second baseman, that way give use a little flatter swing. got to try 0 get the ball up, but as soon as you start rolling over on that ball, hitting nick any the left side -- we had a couple of guys try to do it, but they were still crowding the plate, and then you can't get your swing off. i could inside and out the ball on a ball inside. most hitters can't. they hit the ball more middle of the plate that way. i think in order to do anything, steve wrongers, a guy that i used to hit line drives off of him, trying to hit the ball to right field, because of his sinker. >> jim has been doing that successfully lately, hasn't he? >> yeah, but not on a guy with this type of sinker. you don't have guy that throws the ball, runs and thinks as much as jason's ball does. so he goes over there, but not with the authority and the inside out swing. the inside out swing is something that ozzie smith did, wade boggs, patton did it,
11:10 pm
basically, and guys like tony good win, they hit the ball to that left side. anyway brinkley take the bat barrel this way, lay it off, and then take any of the rollover out of their swing. >> we talk about nick johnson's power from the losed of the plate. in the 4th inning of this paul game tonight, it was all nick all of the time, three consecutive outs from nick johnson in that fourth inning. >> rob: well, the threw and leather there, and stammen got over there, but great job as he rains to his left. another field that's real quick, the ball jumps there. i can't tell you, it's like hitting a golf ball, the ball getting through the infield so quickly in this ballpark. not just in the air, but it gets through there. this is a tremendous play. this ball is hooking. he's playing him straight away, make this play, gets himself up, never panics. that's a highlight real.
11:11 pm
that should be number one on one of those height channelles plays tonight. and then a live drive. but watch how he gathers him. not in a hurry. knows he's out. no panic, just -- but watch right here, you san see, he doesn't get himself in a hurry. little feed to second, and see you later, tulowitzki. >> in the 7th and 8th inning, the nationals not the bases loaded. the 7th was probably most frustrating, no runs crossed the plate, and adam started for home, and enall of a sudden the pitcher fires and getting hip at third base. >> yeah, adam gets a big double right off the wall here. this ball just didn't elevate it enough. now you have first and third. this situation calls for what? if the ball is hit back to the pitcher, you're taught to go
11:12 pm
home. you break to stay out of the double-play. he goes to break, but he stops, seeing the i ball caught. fatal mistake. back to third. no way that the runners can advance from second to third. if he does that properly, goes home, gets caught in a run down, and then bard gets a base hit. might score two there, didn't happen. and then to a weak ground ball to short stop, but mars got ahead of him, so there you go. hey, you either go on contact, or you make the ball go through. if you make the ball you go through, you don't break to home. so he was going on contact, but he should have froze, gets in a run down, the runner from second goes to third. you have second the third, hole different ball game. >> so when he looks back over this ball game, he'll say i should have done this, but i did that? >> manny directs that, though, the third base coach has to make a decision ask say adam you're going on contact. if you're going on any ground ball contact, you take off.
11:13 pm
even if it goes to the pitcher you be stop and get in a run down, because you want to stay out of a double-play, and every pitcher is going to throw home, so if you do it properly with any kind of speed and we the runner is going hard on the batted ball, you scan get to second and third if you stay in a run down long enough. the other option is you make the ball go through, that indicated by the ball has to get by the pitcher. you can't let a line drive -- >> the pitcher is the key, ray? >> the pitcher is the we when you are making the i ball go through, because you've got to freeze on a line drive back to to the pitcher, so if the. of the pitcher doesn't get out there and he stunt -- excuse me, if the batter, he hit, the third base, the run err -- >> i know what you're saying. >> if the runner cuss not commit home, then the pitcher turns and whirls and throws to second pace, gentry. if you let it get by him, then if they don't turn a double play, you walk home. >> we'll take a break and come home and continue with this in-

11:19 pm
>> manny, goodness knows marquis has been around. do you see a different pitcher now than in previous years if? >> well, i've never been in the same division with marquis, so i only saw him sporadically when we played him weapon 4th was with the cardinals, and a little withth the braves and cubs, but today he was outstanding. and he shows, hit record, his era in this ballpark that he must be doing a lotting of things right. one thing you can say about him, he alf ways takes the ball. i don't remember the last time he wasn't the dl. so he does a lot of things right out there. >> you talk about not being imtim dated by the altitude -- >> that's skipper manny acta. tomorrow jordan zimmerman gets the baseball from manny acta. we'll talk about zimmerman. he'll try to win his fourth game of the season. he's even up at 3-3, but tonight it's 1-0 colorado. we'll come back after this.
