stronger. now, the outcome is not what you would like, but the bottom line is, a 1-0 shutout at coors field. i think that's an excellent game for the nationals. >> i couldn't gray with you are more, buddy, as detailed as you are, you have watched this ball club, can see it grow, the changes, best case scenario for our club in the second half. >> best cares scenario, you play .500 in the second half. you're still going to have some problems, not going to be as talented as the mets, braves, and phillies. no more interleague, so don't have to worry about that stuff. bottom line is, you continue to get better. some of these younger players are auditions for next year's team. so for, you know, ray, you and i, we both know this, you're always auditions for somebody, so you have to go out there and play hard, and these guys are playing hard. they're not quitting. i was here, had to do my radio show early today. this team was out on the field, almost every man at 2:00 in the afternoon after a very long plane flight last night. so these guys have not quit.

to second, to short, to third, 15 in a row. another ground ball there as he jams everybody. has he has a good slider, but he lives to use that fastball, 70% fastballs. there is one, he runs in and gets jammed on. nice play there. and he was just on all night long. we did could not a lot with him. he wad opportunities to, and when we did, we justify couldn't cash in. >> you see there the first five hit next nationals line-up all had base hits on him tonight, but they couldn't get a run across in this 1-0 shutout. he came in the ball game with an era, his lowest in five seasons in the big leagues. that will go down a little bit tonight. how would you hit a guy like this? >> well, i think you have to take him to right field. the only way that you don't hit ground balls is don't roll over on ground balls, and sinkers, they're going to sink the ball in on you. with me, i moved off the plate, inside outed the ball, tried to hit the ball right at the

second baseman, that way give use a little flatter swing. got to try 0 get the ball up, but as soon as you start rolling over on that ball, hitting nick any the left side -- we had a couple of guys try to do it, but they were still crowding the plate, and then you can't get your swing off. i could inside and out the ball on a ball inside. most hitters can't. they hit the ball more middle of the plate that way. i think in order to do anything, steve wrongers, a guy that i used to hit line drives off of him, trying to hit the ball to right field, because of his sinker. >> jim has been doing that successfully lately, hasn't he? >> yeah, but not on a guy with this type of sinker. you don't have guy that throws the ball, runs and thinks as much as jason's ball does. so he goes over there, but not with the authority and the inside out swing. the inside out swing is something that ozzie smith did, wade boggs, patton did it,

home. you break to stay out of the double-play. he goes to break, but he stops, seeing the i ball caught. fatal mistake. back to third. no way that the runners can advance from second to third. if he does that properly, goes home, gets caught in a run down, and then bard gets a base hit. might score two there, didn't happen. and then to a weak ground ball to short stop, but mars got ahead of him, so there you go. hey, you either go on contact, or you make the ball go through. if you make the ball you go through, you don't break to home. so he was going on contact, but he should have froze, gets in a run down, the runner from second goes to third. you have second the third, hole different ball game. >> so when he looks back over this ball game, he'll say i should have done this, but i did that? >> manny directs that, though, the third base coach has to make a decision ask say adam you're going on contact. if you're going on any ground ball contact, you take off.

even if it goes to the pitcher you be stop and get in a run down, because you want to stay out of a double-play, and every pitcher is going to throw home, so if you do it properly with any kind of speed and we the runner is going hard on the batted ball, you scan get to second and third if you stay in a run down long enough. the other option is you make the ball go through, that indicated by the ball has to get by the pitcher. you can't let a line drive -- >> the pitcher is the key, ray? >> the pitcher is the we when you are making the i ball go through, because you've got to freeze on a line drive back to to the pitcher, so if the. of the pitcher doesn't get out there and he stunt -- excuse me, if the batter, he hit, the third base, the run err -- >> i know what you're saying. >> if the runner cuss not commit home, then the pitcher turns and whirls and throws to second pace, gentry. if you let it get by him, then if they don't turn a double play, you walk home. >> we'll take a break and come home and continue with this in-

the state medical examiner bruce levy says one of the gunshots to mcnair's temple was fired at close range. kazemi's own gunshot wound was a contact shot meaning the gun was touching her head when it was fired. police stay gun found at the scene was bought by kazemi less than two days before the two were shot to death. these are the new pictures of the couple obtained. the girl's nephew says it appeared -- she appeared confident the relationship would last. she said he was divorcing his wife and it would be finalized soon. >> head coach jeff fishers, first full season at the nfl head coach was in 1995, when the then houston oilers made steve mcnair the number three overall pick. fisher eased mcnair into lineup slowly giving him spot duty over his first two seasons before turning the team over to mcnair in 1997. 12 years later, on monday, he

talked about mcnair's life and death. here's bob holtzman. >> while the titans flag out front sagged at half-staff, an emotional jeff fisher sat quietly in his office search for the right words. when he took the podium, still not sure what to say. fisher chose to speak on behalf of his former quarterback. >> steve mcnair that i knew, would want me to say, sorry. decisions sometimes are not in the best interest. please forgive me. the steve mcnair that i knew would want me to celebrate my life. for what i did on the field. for what i did in the community. the kind of teammate that i was.

that's what steve, that i knew, would want me to safe. >> fibber and mcnair spent 11 seasons together, and nearly won a super bowl. on monday, fisher called mcnair one of the greatest competitors of all time and said hopes that's what people remember, not the details surrounding his death. >> we all have given the right to judge, and my hope is that steve will be remembered and also forgiven, but remembered for what he did and what he meant to this organization. >> we all make mistakes. we all wish we could go back on but i'm not here to dwell on that i'm here to celebrate the life of a dear friend and teammate. >> there will be a public memorial service for mcnair on thursday afternoon in suburban nashville. a private funeral is scheduled for saturday near mcnair's childhood home in mississippi. in nashville, bob holtzman, espnews.
