. >> gary: seattle, 9th inning orioles down. it didn't take long for the bats and a couple of errors to play out 0 the orioles' way. when it was done, the orioles had a two-game winning streak. now back to camden yards. toronto's here. jason berken will make the start. he beat toronto in his major league debut but he has not won in seven since. bird land. jays-birds next.
7:01 pm
>> gary: it's the orioles and masn and what a a beautiful evening for this baseball game as the orioles come in having been swept by the rays. the orioles come in 24-20 at home in the final series before the break for the all-star game in st. louis. hi, everybody. i'm gary thorn. we welcome you back to camden yard, the three-game set. a little different tonight because some people are going to be here won't be working and some who would be working aren't going to be here. first of all, the oriole the manager, dave trembley a two- game suspension. this happened in seattle. it wasn't what he did on theful but what he did off the field, hiding behind the policeman after he was thrown out, continued to be involved in the game. can't do that. two-game suspension. on the other side, cito gaston will not be here. his sister passed away. he has gone to her funeral. there will be two bench coaches running these games.
7:02 pm
here, playing tonight after going on the d l june 4th with an appendectomy izturis is back at short. in order to make room for him, david hernandez, the pitcher, has been sent to make a start at bowie on the 13th. he is slated to pitch for the orioles again against new york after the all-star break. so, jim, i guess that brings people up to date. a lot of coming and going. >> jim: certainly. robert andino played well while izturis was out. he brings a gold glove and also speed. orioles don't steal a lot of base, only 41 of those and brian roberts has 17 of those. sew is is 9-for-9. not only will he help with the offense but the speed factor. you touched on it best. tron know is not playing well. you talked about the orioles 24- 20, over .500 here at camden yard. the oriole also see if they can put in some numbers here.
7:03 pm

7:05 pm
. >> gary: orioles baseball on masn is brought to you by southwest airlines. book your next trip with southwest.com and by wendy's. it's way better than fast food. it's wendy's. just a gorgeous night here at oriole park in camden yards. people enjoying a little picnic out there in the picnic area, gentle breeze blowing out towards right field to start the game. some very high overcast but for the most part, nice sunset and great evening to kick off the first of three heading into the all-star break. take a look at the starting line-up for toronto brought to you by southwest airlines. it will be scutaro, hill and lind, rolen, wells and overbay. rios, dellucci, chavez. this offense is very hot, none
7:06 pm
hotter than rolen. >> jim: taking a look at the 25 right hander, he has to stay down in the strike zone if he want to be successful and also try to stay ahead. strike 1 would not be a good idea. again, for all the orioles starters, jason berken has gotten the least offense, only about 2.9 runs per game. so, again, get ahead, take your chance, you make the great point, gary, toronto has not been playing well but they have been scoring runs. the problem they had is their pitching. let's see if jason berken -- he has a fastball, curve ball and change-up but the fastball probably the most effective t would be nice if he could just keep it down and get ahead in the count. >> gary: take a look at the. >> jim: taking a look at the defense for the oriole, the blue jays have the best defense but the orioles have a terrific outfield, reimold, jones, markakis. roberts, huff, mora, izturis
7:07 pm
around the infield. >> gary: and the team that the orioles are chasing is toronto. the jays start nine games behind the orioles are 13 behind the league leaders, new york and boston there is bean butter field. he is the acting blue jays manager tonight. we send our condolences to cito gas ton and his family as cyst cito's sister passed away. the strike taken by marco scutaro a a great story. he has been a utility infielder and he is having a breakout season if that's fair to call it that. he has been around for many years. >> jim: he ex-seated the amount. >> gary: drilled that one to centerfield. jones going back, running hard, has room and he's got it.
7:08 pm
in the well. i irk the orioles just coming back from seattle where it's death valley out there again, right here, for adam jones, you can see how shallow but he goes back as well as anybody and then it's hard to tell until the game starts. obviously, you can get a little bit of a read during batting practice whether the ball carries but that ball didn't seem like it took off like we saw some of the balls in the last home stand. >> gary: only 77 degrees. can you imagine that, on july 10th. i mean, it is magnificent. pitch taken up high by hill. he is going to the all-star game, aaron hill will be at second base. he has a three-game hit streak coming into this series. he is fifth in homeruns, batting at .298 on the season hill will pop that one up. wieters coming back has room. and he's got it. boy, here is a chance for berken to have a quick inning. >> jim: he gets a high ball hitter out as we take a look at
7:09 pm
a very unconventional two- seamer. usually, you hold it at the seams there is the circle change-up, you can see the four fingers fingers and the thumb for the curve ball which he does not throw a whole lot. >> gary: here is one of the hot hitters we were talking about standing n lind has a hot streak going. he is the delgado significant nateed hitter for the ball club and big numbers, .3029, 19 homeruns, 59 rbis on the season. he is 6th in rbis, 7th in hits and has more extra base hits than anyone else in the american league. so lind is one of those in this line-up who set an extraordinary first half of the season. 45 extra base hits leading morneau, teixeira and longoria.
7:10 pm
>> jim: he is their version of markakis, hitting both well. last year, he only hit two homeruns against lefties. this year, lind settled down. he already has four of the 19, litting well over .300. >> gary: out of reach for that one, shortstop its and a great inning for berken as he retires the side in order. orioles' line-up when we come back to camden yards. the country every day.ver s woman over p.a.: this is your final boarding call. all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 miles per hour. almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. starting august 16th, fly southwest airlines from bwi airport to boston logan for just $49 one-way. bags fly free on southwest so our low fares stay low. grab your bag. it's on. - ( ding ) - book now at southwest.com.
7:12 pm
. >> gary: we are back and a good nine-pitch 1st inning for jason berken. let's take a look at the orioles line-up brought to you by southwest airlines. nine-gauge hit streak for luke, .364 during the streak. >> jim: taking a look at the pnc scouting report on the 23- year-old brett cecil out of the university of maryland grad. he is a five-time loser. for him, we talked about berken not getting a lot of run support. a little bit different story as he gets almost -- well, actually over 6 1/2 runs per game. there are the numbers. you can see the high e.r.a. one thing he does not do is walk anybody. that's something he cannot afford to do. the pitching coach says he has all the pitches. he is one of those wrappers where he kind of -- the wrist goes quickly behind his back. again, for him, he has to stay
7:13 pm
down in the strike zone to be effective tonight. >> gary: both of these pitchers, very high numbers by opponents against them. brett cecil, opponents hitting .344 against him. and the pitch taken inside by brian roberts. he is still battling a sinus infection for which i have great empathy. he has been fighting it for a couple of weeks now and it's taken a lot of strength from him. that's why he had to sit out a few games. the flu has really taken hold along major league and you can understand why, sitting in hotel rooms. >> jim: with brett cecil, when the arm comes back, that's not one of the normal swings.
7:14 pm
it hangs behind him. a lot of times, it's difficult to get back. watch it right about there. way behind him. >> gary: he's all over the place to start the ballgame. a 3 balls 3-1 count. >> jim: watch again. he wraps. again, that's a lot difficult to get the arm up and get it into position. so you try to find that release point. at least this year it's been a little bit more difficult for him. >> gary: and that is a strike. he came along in a hurry. he has had only 51 minor league games. he came through three different levels last year to make it this season to the majors. he was 8-5 with a .280 e.r.a. combined last year. strikeout pitcher, almost 10 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. roberts will foul it off and stay at 3-2. >> jim: that's what the toronto pitcher was talking about. again, he is only 23. he was drafted in 2007 and
7:15 pm
already in the big leagues. he has taken some gigantic stems. >> gary: owns the saves record at maryland where he played college baseball. 3-2 delivery on the way again. brian roberts down to third, coming back, throws, got him. nice play by scott rolen. >> jim: i tell you, he has always been one of the unbelievable third basemen when he is healthy. again, we talked about the 25- game hitting streak. he is certainly not thinking about his bat. >> gary: adam jones is going to go to the all-star game and he is one excited young man. it will be his first all-star game. he heads out to st. louis. he said before the game he can't wait. you see the season numbers, 12 homeruns, 47 rbis. adam will make his way out and it will be one obviously he'll never forget. and most likely he will get playing time and maybe a food
7:16 pm
deal of t keep in mind there are no dhs playing in st. louis. pitchers will be hitting so there will be some changes. it's different for an all-star game when you don't have that dh. 1-0 delivery. jones will take it inside and the count goes to 2-0. adam is hitting .273 off left handers, .328 off right handers. adam jones, that is one of the best numbers in the american league in that department against right hander, the 6th best average in the league. >> jim: and 9 of the 12 homeruns against right handers. of course, a lot more at-bats than against the lefty. >> gary: jammed him. that's a good pitch. and 2-1. cecil, left handers, .295 off him, left handers,
7:17 pm
.374. 2-1 delivery, another one swung on and missed, same pitch. and the pitcher thought that was strike 3. hello. how many times have see seen that this year with position players, hitters and pitchers who do not know the count or the outs. >> jim: we saw an entire red sox team run off the field. >> gary: we have seen that more than ever. brian butter field is asking what's the count here? >> jim: obviously, brett cecil thought that a strike had been -- or a ball had been called a strike or a pitch had been called a strike. >> gary: yep. >> jim: right now, brian butterfield is coming out, the interim manager. of course, our condolences go out to cito gaston. his sister passed away. he will come back on sunday.
7:18 pm
>> rick: he will miss a couple of ball games. he kept it pretty quiet around the club that she was struggling. he didn't tell them until it was time for him to go. and jones will fight that one off at the plate. adam battling. he had a red hot bat. he has had a good month of july, .345, no homeruns but a .345 batting average. the only multi-homerun so far for the month of july is luke scott who has had three so far. nobody else has more than one. trying to get inside his kitchen there on the 3 balls 2 strikes count. >> jim: that's the difference in the orioles offense is that they lead the american league and major league with runners in scoring position hitting over .300 but the power numbers are down and if luke scott had not hit those homeruns, adam only hit one in the month of
7:19 pm
june, markakis the same. >> gary: 3-2 delivery and he got him. >> jim: i don't know what that pitch is. it's a fastball, maybe a slider down there. it looks to me that he threw him a couple in this count. that is moving in and there is the break. looks to me that cecil is going to be all over the place. he's going to be a difficult guy in the sense that you can't really look in the middle of the plate because the ball is moving all over the place. if he is able to get that movement, even if he is pitching from behind, which he has done to both of the first two hitters, you can be successful that way. >> gary: nick markakis. fastball taken up high for ball 1. nick's .255 off lefties, .313 off right handers. this has been a very tough month of july. he only has 6 hits in 34 at- bats, a .134 batting average.
7:20 pm
trying to bunch him inside and missed with it, 2-0. brett cecil continues to work behind the hitters here in the 1st inning. a lot of pitches have been use -- pitchers have been used by this toronto team. he is one of five to make their major league debut this year. they have, too, have gone through a number of starters, roy halladay being the constant. 2-0. will they trade him? >> jim: it's going to take a lot. i shook his hand today. i said, you never know how long you're going to be here. >> gary: he doesn't know either. >> jim: no. he will be 33 next year. he is in the last year, next year, of his contract. pay does not make a whole lot of difference. he would make any team he goes to a lot better. >> gary: brewers have talked publicly they will talk to the jays about him. >> jim: you know, they are talking to three, four quality
7:21 pm
players. it has happened in the past, especially if you have another year on your contract. he would be effective anywhere because he can flat out pitch, roy halladay. he got beaten yesterday by the tampa bay team and david price 3-2. and he has done it. that's plenty of room. 1-2-3 inning. crab meat on the way. hang in there.
7:23 pm
. >> gary: tonight's contestan is bill de sandro. you have a chance to win $99 worth of american scratch off. you can enter by logging in at masn sports.com. owings mills where the great financial show came from for decades. here is scott rolen. rolen is on a tear. a 25-game hit streak. he has uped his average to third best in the american league at .330. 26 doubles, 6 homeruns. rolen is hitting like that jones is going to catch this one. rolen retired. one away. let's go to amber. >> amber: back in the 1st inning, jason berken had a 1-2
7:24 pm
count on adam lind and got him to ground out. that's what rick kranitz wants to see. lately, the orioles have given up a lot of two-strike hits. they lead the american league in that department. so if he does that, he will be able to get deep into the game. >> gary: thank you, amber. and that flyball will be retired as well on a flyball to jones. a lot of first ball early in the count hitting going on. berken is throwing strikes. >> jim: of course, you know, that's a very aggressive hitting team. they lead the american league in doubles with 190, lead it in hits with well over 108, 144 coming into the game. he had wells who was on a 9- game hitting streak. rolen has 28. this is the only guy who has been struggling. >> gary: lyle overbay has not
7:25 pm
had a hit in his last 10, three out of his last 37. his average dropped now top .249. overbay will take the pitch outside. >> jim: if you are a veteran -- and that's what lyle is, he came over from milwaukee, you know you're going to play every day. he is one at-bat away from a hot streak. >> gary: going to be nubbed off the bat. >> jim: he may not be able to convince them at the moment. >> gary: he has to convince himself. once he does that, he will be fine. he certainly has the talent. berken, two quick outs here in the 2nd against the team he made his major league debut against. he left the ballgame leading 3- 2 and won that ballgame since may 26th. but he has not won since.
7:26 pm
seven games without a win and only two no-decisions. delivery on the way, outside and missed with t the count goes full, 3-2. >> jim: he threw him three straight change-ups trying to get him out. now back to an even count. the last time they scored him any run was in anaheim. they had a 4-0 lead. he ended up walking him. >> gary: batter lost. 16 walks in 42 innings for berken. with two down, that will keep the 2nd inning alive and bring rios, an ever dangerous power hitter to the plate. >> jim: that's a great point because you know -- at least if you are well prepared -- that overbay, he is struggling. the last thing you want to do is walk him because alex rios has always been able to hit the fastball. that's what berken does best. yes, you have the change-up and curve ball but lately, he has
7:27 pm
not been able to get them over. that's going to require on jason for toronto to not get the other stuff over. look for the fastball early on and it's been good enough to get the liters out. >> gary: rios and the checked swing takes the pitch outside. here in this ballpark, he is a career .298 hitter. one of the better numbers ape long with scutaro, rolen -- runner at first, that one drilled to left center. that's going to be a long run. jones, back, back, will not get it. it will save a run for the moment t is a ground rule double. and overbay who would have easily scored if that ball is in the yard, will have to stop at third and rios has a two- bagger. >> jim: a lot of times, that's not the walks but what happens art walks. 21st double of the year. we talked about the pnc scouting report, stay down. adam jones can't run it down.
7:28 pm
that ball, very fortunately for the orioles, unfortunately for the jays, bounces into the left centerfield bullpen. >> gary: now david dellucci. he is getting a start in left field. he has not had a hit for toronto since being called up. he is 0-for-136789 he had his contract picked up from aaa las vegas on july 3rd, had 16 games with them, hit .317. dellucci will take it outside and a 1 ball, 1 strike count. david dellucci is a veteran player both minors and major league. he has been around. >> jim: he started with the orioles. his major league debut right in this ballpark against david cone. a couple of strikeouts. >> gary: dellucci to second base, brian roberts gets the good hop. dellucci retired and berken works his way around it. no run, one hit, no errors, two are left in scoring position.
7:30 pm
. >> gary: orioles baseball on masn brought to you by southwest airlines. book your next trip at southwest.com and by pnc. pnc, leading the way. jim palmer and amber theoharis, i'm gary thorn. good to have you with us on this friday night as the other yoalses kick off this three- game set. aubrey huff will lead it off
7:31 pm
for the orioles. reimold and scott will be coming up. and aubrey will take the first pitch for a strike. on the road, .179 coming off that trip so he would like to get things going again offensively. and he will have to wait. >> jim: he had to have a similar series as when he went to the west coast before where he hit some balls pretty well and they just got to the warning track. i guess on that last trip, when they went to seattle and oakland, he probably hit about five homeruns. what did buck say? it would have been a homerun here. but buck martinez says, you weren't playing here. there is more room to pitch, especially in seattle. >> gary: these teams have split the first six games
7:32 pm
played. aubrey with a .360 average. he has gone 9-for-25 with a homerun and 5 rbis against jays pitching. these teams have swept one another in their own yards. here is a 1-2 delivery. aubrey huff reaching and didn't get it. huff goes. a strikeout victim, two of those for brett cecil in the ballgame. nolan reimold coming up, continuing a rookie season where he's going to get serious consideration for rookie of the year if he continues to put the numbers up in the second half that he has prior to the all- star break. first half performances by orioles rookie, some of the best, reimold with eddy murray and cal, jr. in the games played. you can see the number comparisons and nolan reimold among those rookie seasons for those hall of famers. he has put up competitive numbers. >> jim: he came and did it in a hurry. you can see also he has not played as many games as both eddy and cal.
7:33 pm
again, a tough road trip. he got pitched to even though he did have a game where he went 3-for-4. all those hits came in a ballgame. left hander misses inside with that. >> jim: because of that off day yesterday, the orioles got home about 2 0-0 on thursday morning from seattle, today, workingwith terry crowley and trying to iron some things out there is another slider. hard to really tell if it's just a cut fastball because he wraps his arm but the ball has got great life. through a good slider to huff to strike him out, threw a good slider to adam jones to strike him out. >> gary: really rides in on these right handed hitters. 1-2 delivery on the way and reimold will throw one out. after an 0-1 count, we talk about these numbers all the time. in the american league after an 0-1 count, the average is .235. oriole as little better than that at .243.
7:34 pm
that's why that first pitch strike matters so much. you just -- it matters. you are out. i e i remember rick peterson was a pitching coach out in oakland. you try to convince these guys the difference between 0-1 and 1-0, the difference is 100 point. another good breaking ball of some sort. and he located it really well. >> gary: three strikeouts, two in the inning on the same pitch. >> jim: a little ron guidry action. that's the way guidry would pitch. another fastball. he would bury that slider down and in. carlton did it. some of the great pitchers of all time, lefties. >> gary: luke scott comes up with two down and nobody on. luke hitting .346 in july with three homeruns, leading the orioles. he is tied for first in the american league in rbis in july. the fewest at-bats with
7:35 pm
homeruns at home nor the oriole, luke scott also in that category. way behind on a fastball right there. you take a look at at-bats required to get homeruns in orioles history, you see how prolific luke scott has been in being able to get those with frank robinson a couple of seasons at the top, then luke right behind him. jeff maddox behind him. 0-2 delivery. boy, that was close. 1 ball, 2 strikes count. brett cecil was headed to the dugout again and maybe with just cause. that was a pretty good pitch. >> jim: a slider that just stayed up at least for jerry meals, the home plate umpire. another thought. >> gary: he will be trying wrap one here. 1-2 delivery on the way and he bloops it. a base hit to right. so scott has a 10-game hit streak continued with that two- out single and the orioles have
7:36 pm
their first base runner, comes in the 22nd inning. >> jim: amazing here for luke scott. he has learned to hit lefties. i don't know if -- i should rephrase that. he has managed to hit lefties. i don't know if he ever forgot. but he was hurt last year and this year healthy. you see melvin's numbers. the extra hits -- extra bases down, homeruns. he has not hit one in close to 200 at-bats. he hit a couple of balls hard on the road trip, gap power. >> gary: melvin would love to find the long ball just to feel better about it. right now, anything to get the runner around. the orioles are 15-16 against left handed starters on the season, one below .500. >> jim: the two out hits get mora to the plate. we saw that with the walk.
7:37 pm
last inning, a two-out walk to overbay who is 3-for-37. orioles got lucky. they would have gotten on the board if the ball had bounced against the wall instead of hopping over the wall. >> gary: melvin mora is .373 off righties. the pitch is low. he falls behind to mora, 2 balls 1 strike. brett cecil, only 23 years old. 6.23 e.r.a. and all those homers that he has surrendered, especially to the right handers, 6 out of 8. throw over to first base. jim mentioned he had that five- homerun ballgame. after that ballgame, he got sent down to the minors as you might expect and had to do some work there, trying to get some things straightened out. he pitched against boston and may 20, five homeruns, didn't
7:38 pm
get back to the maim jurors until a month later. 2-1 delivery. mora takes it and it's inside. and a 3 balls 1 strike count to melvin mora. >> jim: this is where you may get a pitch where you can hit it and drive t look for something out over the plate. i think when you are struggling, power wise, sometimes, you expand the strike zone but if you look in the zone -- of course, mora had that great second half last year. >> gary: 3-1 delivery to him and walked him. so after getting two strikeouts, a single and a walk, he put two on. first walk given up by brett cecil. and matt wieters will get the rbi chance. matt has had a good july so far. first eight games, 4-for-28, with one multi-hilt game. the last 21, hitting .315 with
7:39 pm
seven multi-hit games. >> jim: kinds of mirrorred what he did aaa norfolk, after having a great year at aa bowie last year. >> gary: trying to settle in. >> jim: it really is. terry crowley, the hitting instructor says that the guys have better command, may though a little harder, have a better repertoire. things are not as predictable in the big league. and you have to come up here and learn your pitchers, their pitchers. it's a big job to come to the major league as a catcher. it's not like you are playing the outfield and you don't have to make decision, put down fingers and just hit. >> gary: a lot more to think about. >> jim: oh, yeah. >> gary: as a switch hitter, matt is .233 right handed. one of his homeruns hit this side. much better average the other way at .293.
7:40 pm
2-0 count. he has a hitter's count. runners at first and second, two down. and wieters will take the pitch down low and this is what happens to brett cecil with that problem with command and location. you can get four, five batters in a couple of innings where he looks unhittable and, all of a sudden, it all disappears. here, two strikeouts and a single and a walk. scott off second, mora off third. wieters takes it, not even close and the bases are loaded. well, welcome back, cesar izturis. meeting at the mound and izturis who just came off the d l today will get an opportunity with the bases loaded in his first at-bat. >> jim natural right handed hitter. he is a switch hitter, hitting much, much better from this side of the plate. he only has six at-bats, i
7:41 pm
think 2-for-6. there you go. >> gary: david hernandez is going to be right back up here after the all-star break. they didn't want to use him in the pen, wanted to keep him in the starting rotation. they can do that by sending him down. they will do that in the new york series after the break. he's probably going to take a couple here. there have not been many strikes. >> jim: that ball not even close. again, there is a young pitcher that his mechanics go arye and then it does not matter how good your stuff is. he has shown us the slider, has thrown 94. right at the moment, you can see it looks like he is about 18, just turned 3, i think, on july 2nd. right here, just trying to slow everything down and try to get that release point. when you lose it, there is a ten ten did i s-s-when i came up, i was a little bit more over a top. right now, he needs to throw the ball in the middle of the plate because it's not going to
7:42 pm
