>> jim h.: rich hill on the orioles bench. birds have the lead 3-2, tying run is on. there's danys baez who is having a very good year for the birds. >> jim p.: he last pitched on tuesday. he hit one of those little rough spells where, of course he's a big guy, great extension, long armor. had trouble getting the ball down. gave up a grand slam and a three run home run when they were in philadelphia. but when he's thrown the ball down in the strike zone, very difficult to hit. >> jim h.: jim referred to the bullpen. over the past four games, here are the numbers for the orioles relievers. they have been winners in two of the four, with a 1.20 e.r.a. that is very solid pitching by the relievers. >> jim p.: we have seen them give the orioles hitters a chance in some of those games,
8:50 pm
to come back and win games where they trailed it. >> jim h.: barajas has flied out twice to center field. in this situation you don't have to worry about millar taking off, so baez can really concentrate on barajas. catcher running, a candidate for a ground ball for a double play. >> jim p.: if you could make your pitch. that's really what the game comes down to. splitter, sinker, got the hard slider. he misses with the splitter right there. so getting the problem is only when he's gotten behind and the ball has gotten up. barajas has yet, that's an amazing number, yet to hit into a ground ball double play. he's been up almost 240 times. that's hard to believe. must be starting a lot of runners. bouncer foul. but every once in a while, you're going to roll over.
8:51 pm
power guy. second season with the blue jays. he'll turn 34 in september. >> jim p.: what i was going to say is that -- >> jim h.: are you okay? >> jim p.: sure. a little frog came in there. 39 rbi's. >> jim h.: baez gets him. strikeout, and one away. as of july 9th, orioles pitchers have record add total of 505 strikeouts, that means care blue cross blue shield is closer to their goal. >> jim p.: so you know it's not about voluntarily os it for
8:52 pm
danys baez. mid 90s. again, when he's thrown the ball well, splitters going down, that's how you get those ground balls. >> jim h.: brian butterfield does not go to the bench for dellucci, in part i guess because the orioles closer is left-handed. so if you lift your right- handed bat now, if it comes up again in the ninth inning, you would have the lefty facing sherrill. here's the 1-1, ground ball towards short, double play ball, andino to roberts, there's the double play and baez erases the base runner and the orioles get out of it. 7s fy to over 65 cities across the country every day. woman over p.a.: this is your final boarding call. all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 miles per hour. almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. starting august 16th, fly southwest airlines

the amazing thing about the performance from rich hill tonight, unfortunately the orioles really had no idea of knowing which rich hill would show up the tonight it was the goodrich hill. he was very effective. >> jim p.: we talked about king of the hill, being aggressive, forget about the bad starts. i think he did a good job of that. you've got to be on egg shells when he's pitched. tonight he threw the ball well, he made some great pitches. >> jim h.: you talked about, hey, forget about everything. don't go out there and think, just go out there and pitch. >> jim p.: i thought he threw the ball better, he had better life through the strike zone. we could work on change-ups and i think that's what he's going do the second half of the season. yogi never, he just called the pitches. he never pitched. he hit 358 home runs. >> jim h.: this the final start for rich hill prior to the all- star break. this is really something he
8:55 pm
might be able to build on. >> jim p.: the orioles certainly want to win. unless last night, it was whoever was playing at home was going to win, so they kind of changed that. >> jim h.: the orioles now will go for insurance and rich hill explaining to one of baltimore's finest how he got the batters out tonight and the police officer agreeing with him. yeah, you had that one pitch, kind of sailed inside. then you swung and missed. i really liked that change-up you threw. that was in the sixth inning. rich hill will say, yeah, that was a good change-up there. >> jim p.: that's a great shot. rich hill, a nice guy. he's talking to everybody on the bench. >> jim h.: you pitch a good game, you get your own security. melvin mora has run the count to 3-0. >> jim p.: he's probably saying, don't you think i should have thrown a change-up back there to millar? make it easy for the bullpen.
8:56 pm
romero pitching quite a game tonight, too. >> jim h.: so the lead-off walk, and here is matt wieters. matt wieters must be wondering if he's ever going to get to bat left-handed again. so far. >> jim p.: we talk about why it's difficult to win against left-handed starters. because a lot of your guys see, first of all, if you're a switch hitter like brian or matt, you see so many more at- bats. >> jim h.: millar runs it down to hill, romero is involved in it. lock at all these throws. what's barajas doing out there. barajas finally tags him out. >> jim p.: either romero came up with a new move or the advanced scouts, because he just did one of those step off moves. we've seen it before. melvin. >> jim h.: one to three to
8:57 pm
four, to one, to three, to two. >> jim p.: so there goes your lead-off runner. back to the thought. if you're a switch hitter, you have to maintain two swings. you see righties at least most of the time more often than you do left-handers. a lot of times you say, okay, if you're matt wieters, i believe a national right-handed hitter as did brian roberts, you learn to hit left-handed. a lot of the single hitters, it's usually because they want to utilize the speed if you hit from the other side of the plate. hit down to first base quicker. >> jim h.: matt's been switching hitting since he's 5 years old. there are so many more right- handed pitchers that the switch hitters just get so much more
8:58 pm
comfortable batting left- handed. a little bit low. this is as unusual a stretch as we've seen. it's going to be seven consecutive left-handed starters against the orioles. >> jim p.: what happens is, just think about it. not that aubrey huff and markakis and scott, especially scott's having a great year against left-handers, but the home runs go down, the extra bases go down, slugging average goes down. left-handed pitchers neutralize people to some extent. >> jim h.: hill taking charge. second baseman has it for the second out. find out if one of your favorite orioles has what it takes in the kitchen at the orioles cookoff. you can join orioles players brian roberts, jeremy guthrie and gregg zaun at the espnzone, they'll compete in the team's first ever cooking competition.
8:59 pm
amber has been digging for the information. what are the orioles going to cook? >> amber: you know they're competitive so they're taking this very seriously. jeremy guthrie is going to make spanish tortillas, brian roberts is still undecided. a funny moment, guthrie informed me that the spanish tortillas are a spanish dish from spain so i'm glad he told me that because i would not have been able to figure that out. when i called hill on it, he did tell me french toast is not from france so he did feel a need to clarify. >> as i understand it, whichever of the three players wins, that dish will be added to the menu at espnzone, is that right? >> amber: that is right. and gregg zaun is very excited about that. he said at first he wanted to make some sort of omelet, but he found out they didn't have eggs. but he thinks hissen chill lad das will get there.
