zauny. nothing like experience. >> jim h.: jeremy i would guess learned how to make the spanish dish when he was on a dish in spain. >> jim p.: paella. dicing shrimp, it's a classic. >> jim h.: i probably have, but i can't recall the last time i have. but i've been around the block. tried several types of dishes. >> jim p.: i see him barbecuing all the time. what is that, guthrie? >> jim h.: yeah. does he ever invite you over? >> jim p.: no. what are you eating tonight, jeremy? this afternoon? well, it was really g too bad you missed it. >> jim h.: he's down on strikes. so romero, pretty strong inning
9:01 pm
9:02 pm
>> jim h.: time for you to text in your vote for the at&t player of the game. here are the candidates tonight. luke scott has his 18th home run. one of the runs driven in. rich hill who stands to get a win. or aubrey huff who cobbled to get the orioles the lead back. text in your vote now and have
9:03 pm
your voice heard. >> jim p.: the master plan quite simply, jim johnson usually pitches the 8th inning, you got him a lead. a little bit of a struggle his last start. at least the last inning out in seattle. again, when he's on his game, tough to muster runs against. again, not a lot of guys from toronto, not a lot of at-bats, but not very many. overbay 2 for 4. on or about that, lind 1 for 4 and hill 1 for 2. he's going to face scutaro, then hill and lind right after him.
9:04 pm
>> jim h.: scutaro, one out of three. >> jim p.: and that a double. >> jim h.: there's a strike. >> jim p.: and they take away the line. not at first, but melvin mora playing about a step behind the bag just in case he bunts and guarding the line. take away the double with the one run lead. >> jim h.: and he hit him. scutaro hit by a pitch which gets the tying run on. >> jim p.: well, it gets somebody that can steal bases. but this is the last thing you want to do if you're jim johnson. he's been a little bit out of sorts over the last two, three weeks. right there you can see marco getting out of the way as much as he could. he could see it coming. >> jim h.: so johnson hits scutaro leading off here in the
9:05 pm
8th inning. we'll see how the blue jays play this on the road. not very likely you'll have this guy bunt. he's second in the league in base hits. >> jim p.: boy, are those good numbers. >> jim h.: second batter this year that johnson has hit. what you might see here is a hit-and-run. >> jim p.: the one thing i've noticed from jim johnson, it almost looks like maybe something's going on physically, is that he just hasn't commanded the sinker. that's where it all starts for him. only 20, he just turned 26. another great arm out of the orioles bullpen. really when he's on his game, he is tough to hit. good life. got a good curveball. a month ago started using the
9:06 pm
change-up which looks so much like the sinker. for some reason he throws him a curveball. so now you're really into a hitter's count. this curveball about, what, two feet outside. so it's a fastball situation. that's what hill will look for. maybe not, right? >> jim h.: johnson brought on in the 8th to set up. >> jim p.: i'm not a fan of playing up the line much that's not normally where you'd play. jimmy johnson makes the fastball down and away. melvin would move just two, three feet to his left. because i look at hill, he's
9:07 pm
the go-ahead run. >> jim h.: ground ball right back to jim johnson. he thought about second, throws to first. that was a fine fielding play there. that ball bounced up on him quickly. >> jim h.: if you're going to hit-and-run, and brian butterfield waits until it's 2- 1. there goes scutaro, this keeps him out of the double play. probably still could have gotten him. with the one run lead, take the sure out, even though you're going to face the 3-4 hitters coming up. >> jim h.: so the tying run at second base, only one down. here's lind. who has had a tough night, in particular with the strike zone at the plate. he has been called out on strikes twice and he still doesn't agree with either of the calls. >> jim p.: well, it's a big
9:08 pm
strike zone. if you're somewhere in the neighborhood. you got to earn it. glove a couple inches off the corner. if you hit it, you're probably going get that pitch. there's a strike at the knees, 1-1 the count. the hit batsman scutaro in scoring position. ball two. >> jim p.: you could see it's an easy 95. adam lind is really having a terrific year. really struggled last year, against lefties. this year hitting over .300. maybe not as good defensively. definitely not as good defensively as nick markakis. against lefties, he can hit for power, he can drive in the
9:09 pm
runners hitting .284 with runners in scoring position, uses the whole field and home run power anywhere. >> jim h.: they're both the same age, markakis and lind. they were drafted in back-to- back years. markakis by the orioles in 03 and lind by the blue jays in 04. wieters went out to chat with jim johnson. >> jim p.: he leads the american league in extra-base hits. that gives you an idea what kind of year he's having in his second full year in the major leagues. >> jim h.: bounced foul past the first base coach. you have aaron hill batting second for toronto, 114 base hits, and adam lind batting
9:10 pm
third with 103. >> jim p.: right behind him is rolen who is third in the league in batting average coming off a 25-game hit streak. >> jim h.: time requested at the plate. toronto is at .500 after losing 10 of their last 13 games. and he just did get a piece. >> jim p.: boy, was that a great sinker. if you're going well, that's the ball that he puts it in play. or it might even have been a change-up. watch this ball dive down and away. you could throw a sinker off that and vice versa. tough to get a loft hits off jim johnson. -- a lot of hits off jim johnson. >> jim h.: just inside. >> jim p.: you could see mike stagger back, almost wanted to get that right arm up.
9:11 pm
again, well, our pitch track, the pitch track called him out. but good night that mattered didn't get the right arm up. >> jim h.: and a base hit into left field. scutaro will be held at third as luke scott plays it back in. melvin mora plays the hop and falls down. so adam lind with a base hit and toronto has first and third and only one down. >> jim p.: how good a hitter is this kid. we talk about nick markakis. this is what nick does. watch him just go out there. the ball stayed up just a shade. then hit so crisply. melvin, rick kranitz is going to come out and talk to jimmy johnson. you have a young pitcher, you have a young catcher. let's just get on the right page. you have a guy that's camable of throwing ground balls,
9:12 pm
that's jim johnson. if you can get the ground ball, you might be able to get out of this inning with a double play. of course rolen, what's he doing. he's thinking, i want to get a ball that i can elevate. at the worst case scenario, get a ball that can drive in the tying run. >> jim h.: lind rarely runs for stolen bases. he's had two attempts on the year. >> jim h.: his job is to try to break up the double play if there's a grounder. the way you do that is get a pretty good lead, then make sure you get a good jump off the base. pigs holding the bag at first. -- wigginton holding the bag at
9:13 pm
first. baez came on, pitched a scoreless inning in the 7th. got the strikeout and a double play ball. now jim johnson in the 8th. fouled straight down at the plate. 1-2. so scott rolen came into baltimore riding a 25 game hitting streak and he's now 0 for 7 in this series. the streak ended last night. >> jim p.: don't you think he's tired, all those hits, all those games. and it was some streak. 41 for 105. it wasn't one hit a game. you got him where you want him, i think, if you can make your pitch. and just inside again.
9:14 pm
fastball's got a lot of movement on it. >> jim p.: but he pitches, jim, and if you look at his numbers, and they're really surprising to me, is that lefties are .179 and righties are .309. he's more comfortable running the ball away from lefties. >> jim h.: high fly ball to left field, luke scott back on it. has a play. this is certainly deep enough to tie the game. scott has it, he fires towards second base, runner coming to second and safe at second base. as lind was able to slide around the tag as the throw was not at the base. so the sac fly by rolen has tied the game at 3. and that hit batsman comes back to hurt jim johnson. >> jim p.: right here for adam lind, the play's in front of him, so he can pick what side of the base he wants to slide into. right there, there's your tying run. scutaro who did get hit by that pitch.
9:15 pm
so the bullpen gives up a run, at least so far. doesn't get a whole lot easier with wells. >> jim h.: so rich hill cannot win this game. he's now pitched to a no decision. there's a strike to vernon wells. vernon singled his last at-bat. he's flied out to left, then walked. adam lind at second base. it would have been interesting if luke had thrown ball at the base. because brian roberts did have time to apply the tag, but unfortunately the throw was well off the bag and lind was able to slide around it. >> jim p.: arm strength is average. there's good sinker right
9:16 pm
there. so, again, you listen to your scouting reports, you've got dwayne murphy over there, as we look at brandon lee. and they say, you know what, take a chance. why not. again, i think the most important thing is that as you run into second base, you can see where the throw's coming. very tough tag for an infielder. >> jim h.: he got him. vernon wells swings through it and the go-ahead run left stranded throughout at second base. ÷÷pp@@ how far can you see? at pnc, taking the long view is how we help you take the right path. even to change it when conditions demand. keeping you on the road to achieving your goals. it's something we've been doing for over 150 years. let our strength and stability be the basis for yours. pnc. leading the way.
9:17 pm
does my pen have write-ability? come on people, we gotta focus. we're not leaving until we've met our budget. we need ideas. we could cut back on marketing. we could eliminate bonuses. how about we stop buying bud light for every meeting? [ sfx: glass crashing, man screaming ] it's the only beer with just the right taste. bud light. the difference is drinkability. it was a joke!
9:18 pm
>> jim h.: we invite you to join us again tomorrow. matt ferguson will be on the mound. our coverage begins at 1:00 with "o's xtra" presented by at&t. then game coverage at 1:30. we have all the access you need right here on masn. romero stays on. brian roberts, ground ball through the middle. there's a base hit. the orioles get the go-ahead run on here leading off in the 8th inning. so brian snaps his 0 for 14 with that base hit. more importantly he gets on. >> jim p.: it's difficult to run against romero, and i think that's if you're brian butterfield you have to think about a pitch count. match-ups.
9:19 pm
talk about this season when brian roberts scores a run, look at jeter. ichiro. you get an idea, rolens was the -- rolen's was the number i saw today, how important it is. >> jim h.: adam jones change-up outside. >> jim p.: the one thing, even though adam's already hit more home runs than he did all last year, he has the ability to hit the ball to right field. there's your pitching coach on the right. brian butterfield, the interim manager. there's that quick move. again, they've only attempted six steals, so he controls the running game for a youngster pretty well. cal state fullerton, good program, learned that in college. >> jim h.: good eye, taken by
9:20 pm
adam. ball two. adam has a base hit, he's one out of three, now with a four game hitting streak. >> jim p.: he's certainly due for a home run. they play him to right center field. the change-up in there. >> jim h.: 22 games without a home run. 48 at-bats without an extra- base hit. but the consistency still there. >> jim p.: just about home runs. >> jim h.: hill to scutaro, back to first and out at first base. millar somehow kept his foot on the bag. so jones hit it hard but right at hill, that erases the base runner and two men down.
9:21 pm
>> jim p.: you could see brian roberts getting in the way. the snow cone from kevin. yep, they got that call right. nice play. orioles certainly know about the footwork of millar over there. he saved the shortstop and error and got his pitcher an extra out. so two down. here's markakis. there's a strike, 0-1. nick has also fallen into a home run drought. 22 games without one. george sherrill getting up -- getting up, to come on and pitch in the ninth.
9:22 pm
>> jim p.: or if they get a lead you might see jimmy johnson in a tie ballgame. for another inning. only one home run against left- handed pitching this year. and it's kind of interesting, you talk about all the left- handed starters. nick was talking before the game, he had 195 at-bats last year against left-handed pitching. already this year, 145. this is 145th, so a lot of left- handers compared to last year. not only for nick, but for the rest of the orioles hitters. there's that breaking ball from outside. nice eye. you've really got to trust the home plate umpire to take that pitch. >> jim h.: aubrey huff on deck. >> jim p.: remember, the double was on a breaking ball earlier on. there's your pitch count. >> jim h.: there's a fair ball
9:25 pm
at orioles park, 3-3. orioles twice have had leads, twice the jays have come back to tie. here's george sherrill brought on in this tie game. his job get it to the bottom of the ninth 3-3 and hope the orioles can get a walk off. >> jim p.: that's what the strategy is. and he's been very good. a couple of saves. got one wednesday. so 19 out of # 2 for george sherrill. -- for 22 for george sherrill. last 25 appearances. changed his windup, got a little more closed. rios with pretty good numbers, so that will be the first challenge for george sherrill. rios 2 for 4 with a home run. >> jim h.: sherrill will face three consecutive right-handed batters. curveball for a strike, 0-1.
9:26 pm
rios has grounded out to short, struck out swinging and flied out to left. same pitch, same result, it's 0- 2. jim johnson goes one inning, one run on one hit. the hit batsman leading off the inning came back to hurt him. as scutaro moved into scoring position on the ground ball. rios fouls it back with a defensive swing. >> jim p.: they had a couple of good at-bats. the lind at-bat, the single into left. then scott rolen, jim johnson trying to get a double play ball. he got a pitch he could hit in the air. got it deep to left field. >> jim h.: johnson did a good job with the go-ahead run at second base with two out getting the strikeout of wells.
9:27 pm
1-2 on rios. fouled back again. jason facier and scott downs. fraser to come on and pitch if the game remains tied. downs the closer to come on and pitch if there's a save opportunity. >> jim p.: first two pitches breaking balls and they were good ones. >> jim h.: that looked like a little different delivery from george. sort of like a quick pitch. >> jim p.: he does that. >> jim h.: melvin mora plays the hop and that gets it across to get the hustling rios and one away.
9:28 pm
>> jim p.: if you run them out, even the routine plays aren't routine. we have seen both teams tonight beat it down the base pads. i mean any bobble, errant throw, you're on. to me, every major league player should do that every time he runs. it's 90 feet. you can take a rest if you're out. >> jim p.: i understand that. >> jim h.: that's one pet peeve of mine. >> jim p.: and the good players do this. >> jim h.: we find ourselves in this role complementing players because they do it because it seems somewhat infrequent. >> jim p.: sometimes. tonight both teams did it. >> jim h.: millar pops it up. andino out, scott in, scott calls him off, has it for the out, two down.
9:29 pm
28 on hand on this beautiful saturday -- 28,000 on hand on this beautiful saturday night. >> jim p.: real nice kind of early, then it got a little cloudy, then the wind came up, then it got a little warmer. >> jim h.: doesn't feel humid at all. >> jim p.: you'd almost think you're not in baltimore. >> jim h.: rod barajas now. bounced towards third. melvin mora charges to play the big hop and gets it across. very solid inning for george sherrill.
9:30 pm
9:31 pm
and a chance to win it right here. >> the orioles have shown some fire power once again with luke scott hitting another home run, his 18th. we'll have complete highlights. let's get ready for the bottom half of the ninth inning. game tied at 3. >> jim h.: tom, thanks very much. the orioles as rick pointed out, you get a run, the game's over. so the orioles will come up here with the good is not their line-up. it will be 4, 5 and 6. >> jim p.: power pitcher, got a splitter, throws it 93 to 95. having a real good year. he has only given up, at least coming into this game, has given up a run in five of his 35 games. which means obviously he's having a good year. the numbers support that. a lot of times you come in with runners on. may not be your runs. again, in the inherited
9:32 pm
runners, 7 out of 6 have scored, but he has good stuff. the orioles only need one run and they go home the victors. sometimes it's not easy to get that elusive one run. good guy coming to the plate though. >> jim h.: in case you're wondering, frasor has surrendered only one home run on the year. aubrey huff, one out of three gave the orioles a 3-2 lead. >> jim p.: as it game of match- ups, 2 for 4. huff off of frasor. >> jim p.: fastball is high, 1- 0. the blue jays use a modified shift against aubrey huff. you see the shortstop scutaro, he's shading towards the middle
9:33 pm
but he's still on the shortstop side. aaron hill is in the hole at second base but he's still on the infield. bouncer towards first. that will an foul ball down the line. >> jim p.: that was a split fingered fastball which tumbled. >> jim h.: if huff gets on you'll likely see pie to pinch run. it's too high. the blue jays acquired jason frasor from the dodgers just before opening day in 2004. even up in exchange for jason wirth. the orioles had drafted jason wirth, he was a first round pick of the orioles. the orioles traded him to
9:34 pm
toronto for the left-handed pitcher john bale. now he's going to the all-star game as a backup from the phillies, jason wirth. >> jim p.: real good defensive outfielder with power. hitter's count. what did you mention, one home run? probably doesn't have to try to hit home runs. >> jim h.: pops it up. scutaro and scutaro taking charge. he has it for the out. one down here in the orioles ninth inning. luke scott at 43% leading rich hill and aubrey huff. still time to vote. text in your vote now, have your voice heard. tom and rick will have the results coming up on "o's xtra" post-game. >> jim p.: frasor got away with
9:35 pm
a hanging change-up. aubrey popped it up. >> jim h.: here is ty wigginton, home run power. breaking ball is high, 1-0. wigginton doubled and scored in the second. now has a three-game hitting streak going. >> jim p.: he did just in case, if it was in somewhere where the bat head was, took a healthy rip. that was an awfully good breaking ball. frasor has good stuff. his numbers certainly support that. there's your fastball. good fastball hitter and he's late on it. 94 and splitter and change-up.
9:36 pm
>> jim h.: rod barajas lost his mask on that fastball. he prefers the traditional style catcher's mask not the helmet style. 2-2. wigginton has one home run in the month. he hit one out on july 1st. ball three. that was a real good take right there. >> jim p.: that's what a slider's supposed to do. especially if you establish your fastball early on. luke scott waiting on deck, already with a home run
9:37 pm
tonight. but he's established he will throw any pitch in any count. he did that to huff, 3-1. >> jim h.: line drive, base hit into left field. he's on with one down. hi wigginton just had some at- bat after falling behind 1-2 in the count. >> jim p.: he was all over that high heater. i think we're getting the message, which we already knew, pretty good high ball hitter out over the plate. >> jim h.: he's been a tremendous addition to this team. >> jim p.: it took him a while to get going, but he can play all over. he played shortstop, he's played second, played very well at shortstop -- i mean at second base, could play first, could play third, could play
9:38 pm
the outfield. and this guy can hit. >> jim h.: winning run on at first, luke scott up. high fastball. let's go back to the fourth inning as luke connected for number 18. that also extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games. good eye. >> jim p.: i think right here if you're rod barajas, you're catching for toronto and jason frasor, you've got to say where can i go where the ball's going to stay in the ballpark. this outfield playing very deep. they've moved back. they're trying to keep the ball in front of them. >> jim h.: with wigginton at first it's not a certainty that he'd be able to score.
9:39 pm
>> jim p.: he runs well. not a very big lead though. again, knee high. again, doesn't mean this pitch doesn't get hit because it ends up pretty much in the middle of the plate. but it is more difficult to get to away. the ball belt high, inside middle. >> jim h.: wigginton measuring his lead. >> jim p.: one thing about luke, he crowds the plate. he's able to reach outside quarter of the plate. there's no stronger person on this orioles team. >> jim h.: ball three. that's how zoned in he is right now. that pitch, he didn't even
9:40 pm
sniff at. >> jim p.: he gets the look for his pitch here. frasor is in the hole. if it's not a strike, take the walk and let mora win it. >> jim h.: swings through it again. 3-2. >> jim p.: you can see he's got good stuff. at the end of the day that's probably what jason frasor does best. he's able to keep it out of the middle of the plate. just explode it. >> jim p.: a perfect pitch to run on, even though he's got a
9:41 pm
miniscule lead. >> jim h.: huge out for jason frasor, two men down. three swings and three misses in the at-bat. >> jim p.: how often do you see somebody throw three fastballs by luke scott. doesn't happen too often. i told him butterfield you did a great job last night. you told the pitching staff not to let the orioles get any runs. he just kind of smiled. he said i did do a pretty good job, didn't i? >> jim h.: melvin mora has walked a couple of times. he's also flied out to center field. breaking ball is low.
9:42 pm
melvin has hit in his last three games. he has 61 hits on the year. nine doubles and two home runs. wigginton singled with one down, he's at first with two men down. >> jim h.: romero went eight, three runs on seven hits. now frasor here in the ninth. >> jim p.: that was a perfect slider, low and away. this guy's stuff is electric.
9:43 pm
>> jim h.: they list him at 5'10", he doesn't even look that big. >> jim p.: but he's got a great arm and he's making great pitches. >> jim h.: he's been with the tigers, dodgers and blue jays organizations. originally was drafted by the tigers, a 33rd round pick. >> jim p.: as so many young pitchers, when he did come up he was a starter. some of the greatest relievers of all time have been starting pitchers. also we talk about stu miller, he was a starter, lee smith, starter. eckersley. bruce suitor starter.
9:44 pm
>> jim h.: outside, ball two. >> jim h.: john smoltz started and relieved, now he's starting again. wigginton is at first, he's the winning run. two men down. ball hit towards short, scutaro to second is, that will force wigginton and that ends the inning. at samuel adams, nothing we brew is as versatile with food as boston lager. the sam adams lager goes beautifully with a lot of ethnic spicy foods. the maltiness and hoppiness work well with indian food. samuel adams boston lager is strong enough to support a heavier meal and it's balanced enough that's it's not going to overpower a lighter meal it could compliment a salmon dish with a little bit of spice to it. whether at a restaurant you're at home if you're having great food and you need a great beer,

9:46 pm
before time runs out on this astonishing offer. >> jim h.: a beautiful night in the inner harbor and a good baseball game here at camden yards as we head to the 10th. blue jays able to tie it with a run in the 8th. here is brian bass on to work in the 10th. >> jim p.: his last appearance in seattle. the orioles came back with three runs in the ninth to win it. he's within pitching very well for the orioles. rich hill was relieved by danys baez, and sherrill pitched the ninth, here is brian bass. sinker, curveball, change-up
9:47 pm
pitcher. >> jim h.: jose bautista will lead off. first strike, 0-1. hard hit ball, brian roberts can't reach it. there's a base hit. roberts was shading up the middle. bautista hit it past him the other way. go-ahead run is on leading off here in the 10th. >> jim p.: sharply hit ball, brian will lay out to his left with the screamer into right field. you would imagine that scutaro will be trying to get him into second base. scott downs, their closer still up just in case they get the lead. >> jim h.: scutaro does have four sacrifice bunts. mora is in at third expecting a
9:48 pm
bunt. the throw to first. the throw sailed on wigginton but he gloved it. bautista does have three steals on the year. squares to bunt, bubts it foul. >> jim p.: he bunts the ball and it almost hits him. he scored the tying run back in the 8th. just a two-seamer. brian bass drops that arm. the ball keeps run into righties. when i first came into baseball, they said everybody bunt situation, throw the high fastball. then the late charlie low would say, you know what, as a former catcher, he said the breaking ball is so much harder to bunt because you drop the bat. unless you're able to bunt
9:49 pm
perfectly. >> jim h.: so the orioles were anticipating that the play would be changed and a hit-and- run might be on, but bautista stayed put at first base. >> jim p.: i would think that brian butterfield is going take his chance ifs scutaro can get him into scoring position with hill, he's the second leading hitter. >> jim h.: the bunt is down. wieters has one play at first and he gets it there. so the sacrifice is successful. scutaro advances bautista to second base, now with one down. >> jim p.: so your choices, do you pitch around a guy that has the second most hits and is going to the all-star game, aaron hill, or do you walk him to pitch to the guy who has the most extra-base hits. and got the sing toll get them going in the 8th inning. >> jim h.: if you walk him you set up the chance for the
9:50 pm
double play, but the orioles will not go that route. >> jim p.: and you don't have that match-up lefty in the bullpen even though lind is hitting lefties well. >> jim h.: he'll throw on the run. getting into third is bautista. wigginton thought about it as andino was getting over there to cover, but it looked like roberts was still in motion and wigginton held onto the ball. so two down that, go-ahead run now at third. >> jim p.: it does cut off any kind of passed ball or wild pitch. but now who do you pitch to? do you pitch to lind? matt wieters looking over. here comes rick kranitz. they're going to have a little discussion. >> jim p.: brian bass has thrown three wild pitches on the year which is actually a lot for the reliever. >> jim p.: that's the curveball. the sixth best scoring team in
9:51 pm
