welcome to the orioles versus the blue jays. o's xtra pregame brought to you by at&t, your world delivered. last night the orioles pull off a big visibility isry. when you look pack at it, rick, melvin mora, what do you think >> well, it's been a long dry spell. it's been 50 fames since he hit a home run, and that's not like melvin. he spoiled the second half of last season as getting hits with men in scoring position. last night he came through for us. here is a defining moment in the ball game, when he takes a nice swing right off the front foot, hits it to the opposite field. you don't expect he's going to drive it into the seats, but
1:02 pm
there it is, the game winner. 4-3 victory. he slides into home, ala luke scott, and just gets the heck beat out of him. you've gotta love it. >> hill worked six, gave up to runs. the bullpen gave up just one run. dave trembley talked about melvin mora's night after the victory over toronto. >> well, i've heard him say he's not a home run hitter, but it's certainly nice for him to get one tonight and win the game. i mean everybody dreams of that, a walk off at home to win the game, that's a special moment. >> you look at what the team was able to do and get the win in the way they did, i'm sure you'll take that anytime. >> absolutely. and to get a walk-off home run, serve pumped up. it was big win for us.
1:03 pm
>> we don't give up. we're going out there playingth, sometimes 10, 12, we feel if we can keep our team in the game, we're going to score runs. it's fun to watch these guys. >> toronto stranded four in scoring positions. the orioles opportunities weren't as many, but were able to come up with a big home run. >> you have to give a lot of that credit to the bullpen. bass has pitched very well since his first two games of the season, and johnson ted a very good job, and all of those guys in the bullpen are very is credible. as well as we don'tover use those guys, you can count on them most of the time to pull you out of situations, and they know how to do it. a good repertoire of right- handers, and then hendrickson, what can you say about him, he's done a fantastic job. >> the bullpen, six innings
1:04 pm
last night, and just one run. let's check if now with amber. >> well, brad bergesen get this start tonight. in the first half of the season, he really has been a big highlight for this team. he's hat 7 quality starts in his last 8 outing, and has earned the reputation with his teammates that every time he's on the mound, the orioles have a chance to win. and the reason for that, he always goes deep into the game. over 6 innings a game. i spoke to pitching coach rick kranitz about him, and asked him what has been so impressive about bergesen in the first half. >> well, i think everything he's done has been very positive. he's very aggressive. he challenges he strike zone, and i wasn't sure he was going
1:05 pm
to always do that, bout, you know, to date, that's all he's done. he challenges hitters. some hitter will try to force you to stay out of the strike zone, and is he's strayed true to throwing strikes and that sinker. he knows exactly what he has to do, and he's learned himself, i think, a little more than anything, he's learned what makes him better, and what makes him successful. >> so where does brad bergesen fall amongst other rookie pitchers? take a look at some of the top ones? he's right up there.
1:06 pm
a 5-3 record. really a highlight for the orioles this season, a quite that didn't break with the club out of spring training, but has really contributed in his 15 starts. >> thank you, amber. teach to look at the toronto blue jays starting line- up. now a look at the orioles line- up. nick markakis is th- handed batter in the line-up.
1:07 pm
how about rick early in the season as compared to now? >> well, i think the league has just adjusted to him. they finally not tired of seeing hip hit double after double after double. he's known throughout payable as having the sweetest swing in the game, and the only way you can get him out, you have to exploit him on a day where you find a spot he's not swinging the ball good, and usually it's up and in with the fastball, and that's where teams tried to go to for a while to keep him called down. they've been able to do that for the month of july so far. only hitting, like, .225 in july, but last night is a good indication. he is more patient, gets the pitch his wants to hit. let's hope he's off and running again. of course he's going to get four days off here in a stretch, but today i expect to see him have a big day offensively to continue what he's been doing. >> now, markakis has done very

1:11 pm
right now. david hernandez will be called up from aaa to start the first game on the 20th, and that's leaves rich hill. dave trembley says i only have five starters, be you do the math, rich hill is one of them. he did pitch better last night, went more than with his fastball. they thought he was getting a little to breaking ball happy. does look like he stays if the rotation. >> one guy that the orioles have called up as of late, cam, has really made some adjustments. really looks like an entirely different pitcher than last
1:12 pm
year. >> that's right. the one big adjustment he made, he said he's. working on staying on the left side of the rubber, thought it would be easier to find the left side of the plate that way, which makes sense. so he's been working through that, carried that through the off-season. and then when he got to norfolk, he was working with the pitching coach there to do that. that's been a key for him, and another thing, he has been able to slow his pace down, something they wanted chris ray to work on when he got sent down. he had a 1.07era his last 21 games at norfolk. he was the logical guy to bring up. >> didn't take the orioles long to sign their number one pick,
1:13 pm
but what about two, gibbens? >> yeah, it's not going smoothly. they're not even close right now, nowhere near reaching an agreement. gibbens they knew was going to take a while. there's that august 17th deadline now for signing your picks, or they can re-enter the draft. it's usually on the 15th, but that falls on a saturday, so they got a couple of extra days, which they need. but they don't seem overly concerned about losing gibbens. they wanted to get him signed quicker, though, so they could get him into the season and play this sum, the longer that happens, the less likely that is to happen. they really want to get him signed to get him playing this summer, but at this point, you just settle for getting his name on a contract, and it's going to be a a while. >> one thing we have to look at
1:14 pm
is who is going to be our first half mvp. i have mine right there. >> who is yours? >> i think it has to be luke scott. doesn't it? a .5922 slugging percentage. he's hitting .327 with runners in scoring position. .345 with runners in scoring position and two outs. and this is big, .333 with 8 home runs against left-handed pitching. that is incredible. he's wanted to show trembley he's not a platoon guy, he can hit every day. in spring training you were wondering if there would be enough hits for this guy? and dave trembley said these things have a way of working themselves out, they certainly do. luke scott forced his way into

off. >> jim p: well, he certainly did last year. he hit 23 home runs opinion had 12 in the second half, hit over .370, and drove in 56 runs in 47 games. >> jim h: well, melvin now 37, and of course for the evaluators, meaning andy mcphail and his staff, you, gentleman along the line, have to determine where a player is in his career. is he just in a slump, or he see getting to the point now where he maybe can't reverse it. >> jim p: and you never really know. obviously if he has a good second half, he'll answer that question. i mean, that's the constant battle you have as a professional athlete, whether it's baseball or any sport, when you get older, if you have an off year, is it because of your age, or because you had an off year. now, eve to the he's had years similar to that second half for the entire year, but that was a number of years ago, he still had a very, very productive second half of 2008, had a

up the ladder, so there you go. just waves at that slider off the plate. here is scutaro, back to the top of the line-up. scutaro has had an amazing evolution, if you will, to become an every day player. took him a while to get established in the big leagues, and when he did, he was really a backup. he played for cleveland and milwaukee in the minor leagues. finally in 2002, he made his major league debut with the mets, and in the big leagues, he's been with the mets and oakland and toronto, and with all three of those teams, he

>> jim h: fernandez as an indians player later in his career broke broke orioles fans hearts. the fire to first. oh, safe at first base! looked like he just government it there, and dale scott said safe! >> jim p: here comes trembley, because i thought he was out. one thing about rolen, see, pick it up, get it over there. he does that. see, he's out. and dale scott get this call wrong, and trembley is going to come out and let him know about it. of course he did get tossed in seattle, but he did miss that call. >> jim h: it was close. >> jim p: great camera work. you're out. well, you're not, but you're supposed to be. >> jim h: that will load 'em up. so it will cost bergesen another batter. it's a very quiet discussion. >> jim p: and i imagine that would be an error on mora. >> jim h: it is, so melvin

rays were leading the american league in runs for a while, i think they're now third or second, yankees have taken over, but he one-runed them, struck out 7 in six innings. that was his major league debut. >> jim h: well, it's a pretty impressive climb when you consider he began the year in double a, with no knowledge of whether or not he would be promoted, and did so well he went to aaa, and few here in the big leagues, he's taking advantage of all of the injuries the blue jays have had, and taking advantage of it.

2:28 pm
and i'm sure ron now is getting taken care of by richey and brian and any of the orioles team physicians here at the game today. >> you can see, a lot of protection, also the chest protector, also department shoes for foul balls. >> so ernie tilery busy man down there getting the dale scott home plate umpiring gear out, which was probably already packed. >> definitely. as you mentioned, the only guy that did not umpire until just this moment >> so we'll have three umpires, jerry meals has moved to first base, and mike demuro is at third, and the conviction of the two will help out at second base. there's mike and there's jerry. >> spring training type umpiring. >> so the crew chief dale scott now back at the plate, and we'll resume as greg zaun will lead off against rzepczynski, no score in this game.
2:29 pm
and it's outside, 1-00. ball 2. in his debut against tampa bay. he walked four. he has not yet walked a batter today. and it's outside, ball now, we're only the bottom of the third, but were the pitcher deep enough in this game to know the ron culpa strike zone, and how big of an adjustment might this to be dale scott? >> well, he has to get familiar. a lot of umpires while you're warming up would sit behind the plate to get an idea of the movement. >> dale scott is a 23-year veteran, he's been in the big
2:30 pm
leagues since 1986. and zaun takes another one for a strike. so full doubt on zaun. >> jim p: look at the way he gets down. does he get ready to call a ball or a strike? watch this. there are a lot of umpires that kind 0 get relaxed and all of that. he's down there, and as you're ready to pitch, look at this right here. okay. i'm ready. >> jim h: sharply hit foul, right past juan. >> jim p: so is zauny, rips it foul. >> jim h: there's a got a look at that setup jim referred to. zaun has a two-game hitting strategic going, and he really has been hitting the ball very well since matt wieters was promoted to the big leagues. here is the 3-2, inside with a breaking ball. ball 4, and there's a lead off walk. >> jim p: yeah, when you're not playing a lot, he struggled
2:31 pm
early, he said you just have to kind of slow everything down, shorten your swing, is that's what he's, able to too, and just kind of trust your hands. good balance to the plate, and work with your hitting instructor, terry crowley, on a regular basis, and then take your chances. there's "the crow". >> jim h: here is izturis with zaun on at first and no one down. threw is a strike. dale scott the home plate umpire will have to be aware of any ball hit down the third base line. right now, that is unmanned. >> jim p: even for a double or even a home run. >> jim h: ground ball towards second. hill has it, will go to scutaro back to first, and not in time. zaun upset them just enough at
2:32 pm
second base, and izturis, who runs well, got down the line. >> jim p: that's a perfect example, even when you don't have ore whelming speed, you get down the base path, is you can -- you can see him. i'll tell you what, that's actually interference there, because -- now, watch zaun, he can't touch the bags, and you're supposed to be able to touch the bargain with your hand, so they certainly could have called a double-play there. a little over stillious slide, but got away with it. >> jim h: so one down instead of the double-play, and here is robbers for his second at bat. izturis without a doubt a stolen base threat, it's not going to matter as that one gets away from chavez, and izturis quickly down to second base. >> jim p: yeah, 9 for 9, so he'll just go on the wild pitch. you can see chavez try to block it. and you're taught, again with a good lead, and, boy, your momentum is going to second,
2:33 pm
and easily interest scoring position for mr. izturis. good to see him back. >> jim h: so with one down, the orioles have a chance for a lead. robbers bounced out to third his first at bat. good eye, takes outside, ball 2. brian has 92 hits on the year. adam jones has 97, and markakis has 101 to lead the club. >> jim p: brian with 30 of those hits coming from this side of the plate, one home run. >> jim h: two all. high pop foul. that will be in the crowd town the line. who is the amazing thing about this ball club, they lost jansen, marcum, mcgowan, and they still have been able to bring up these youngsters. orioles, of course, started wait lot different starting
2:34 pm
staff than they had originally. gaston, of course, knows they still need to hit a little bit better with runners in scoring position, but some of these young guys are going to get a lot of opportunity to show what their ability level is at the major league level over the second half of the year. here is the 2-1 to brian roberts. low, ball 3. well, the opportunity is very important when your time comes, but from the orgle standpoint, it's very important to have that depth at every level. you look at a guy like rzepczynski, he was their version of jason berken. you have the depth in your system, you have some options to go to if the need arises, and the blue jays have certainly had the need with all of the injuries. there's a base hit to right center field for brian roberts. liz score, roberts hustling to second base, and he holds with an rbe double. so the orioles get on the board
2:35 pm
in the third, as brian robbers picks up his 41st rbi. >> jim p: and 29th double of the season. on his way to 50 again most likely. nice approach. he just hits it up the gap, and caesar izturis to make it 1-0. >> jim h: so that a combined team run there, izturis hustling down the line on his ground ball. the zaun slide at second base to upset scutaro's throw to first, and roberts with the rbi double. >> jim p: hill will come in to talk to rzepczynski. the amazing thing about the orioles, is when. you talk about berken, who was 12-4 last year, he had to start at double a, because for the first time in a long time,ny numbers so were great at norfolk, they didn't have a slot for him, at least early on, and then he was called up. was 2-0 down there, and then to
2:36 pm
the big leagues. good president bush to have. >> jim h: here's adam jones. takens inside, nearly hit him. >> jim p: and then every time we have a chance to go in the press room and see the scouts, trade deadline les amiantus, end of then month, and a lot of scouts here just raving about the orioles young pitching, whether tillman. had a scout saying he ready to pitch in the big league. it's just nice to have choices. >> jim h: here are some of the young arms on each of these staffs, three rooks i in the blue jays rotation, and three in the orioles rotation. they have seized the opportunity. and he nearly balked, but threw it to the plate. feet got caught the rubber. i'll tell you what what, that was a heck of a, on two ends.
2:37 pm
rzepczynski to release the ball, and chavez to block it. >> jim p: yeah, looked like he caught his front spike. he has a book leg swing, and i think he caught it. see right there be it catches. obviously he wants to stride another six, eight inches to get square to home plate, so it catches, and somehow he heaves it up to home plate for a ball. >> jim h: how about chavez? he sees the guy stumbling, and then here come this ball out of his hand. >> jim p: well, roberts is creating a big distraction for rzepczynski. i'm sure aaron hill reminded him about his ability to steal third base. he doesn't go. ball three. >> jim p: my second year, i did that in chicago, lost my balance, and lobbed it up there, like a three pitch softball, and tommy agee hit it over the fence.
2:38 pm
that's when i wished i had been a little wilder. he literally took about three pumps and hit it for a home run. it was bizarre. >> jim h: outside, ball four, roberts easily steals third base. rzepczynski never looks at him. >> jim p: yeah, welcome to the big leagues, and this is when you take advantage of a young pitcher. you make a nice adjustment at the plate, and then when you get on here, if you're a veteran, they're going to tell you make him stop. well, see, you can watch this, great angle. leg is coming up. he's already in a dead run, and chavez behind the plate did exactly what you're supposed to do, hold on to the ball. >> jim h: that was some angle. he was almost halfway to third base, and rzepczynski still had the ball in his hand. >> jim p: a terrific angle. >> jim h: so first and third, one down, and here is markakis whose bat came alive last
2:39 pm
night. breaking ball outside, 1-0. rzepczynski not only was not in major league camp, he's not even listed in the major league section in the blue jays media guide. >> jim p: that's a balk. could have easily called a balk there. got to step to first base. i mean, that's kind of like stepping somewhere towards the tugout and throwing it back, and, oh, by the way, i'll throw it over to first. there's a quick -- >> jim h: markakis to right filed. there's a base hit for markakis. roberts will score, jones flying around to third, and the orioles have a 2-0 lead! >> jim p: well, there's and good base running. obviously you're going to just go back and tag at third, but adam jones, it is difficult on a hard-hit ball, unless you get a great read, to get from first to third. hanging slider. that's not going to work against markakis. he's all over it, and a great
2:40 pm
read by adam jones, because he's running all the way, even to the rios with through great throwing arm. so there is brian going back to tag up, and n case the wall is caught. that will make it 2-0. so the prospects of a big inning here, and the orioles third. >> jim h: brian scores his 63rd run on the year. markakis with his 57th rbi. adam jones hustled all the way to third. the pitching coach out for a chat. the orioles and the toronto blue jays with the three rookies in the rotation, within the al east, they are tied for the most roarkeys in the current five-man rotation. the rays have two. yankees have one, boston none.
2:41 pm
>> jim p: chamberlain is pretty much to me a rookie, because he's a reliever that again they just said we're going to make you a starter, and he's been very ineffective, even though he has great stuff, just hasn't learned how to do it yet. >> jim h: to here's sal la star. breaking ball for a strike. here is the 0-1. you factor in, how do you help your pitchers? you get guys who can catch the ball. >> jim p: well, the orioles serge have that in their outfield. you're looking at, of them right there that's heading to st. louis for his first all- star game. there's another one that should be winning gold gloves. >> jim h: salazar bounces it towards third. back to first, there's a double- play. rzepczynski gets out of it without any further damage, but the orioles take advantage of a

here at the game with their family on this gorgeous sunday afternoon. beautiful summer day on july the 12th, city and the orioles now with a 2-0 lead, looking for those ad-on runs. another curveball, this one hit this corner. >> jim p: maybe the pitching coach for toronto said you know what? let's not get too productible. let's use all of your pitches. he's had a good curveball, been three something change-ups. >> jim h: wiggington pops it up, shallow right. rios comes in, and he battles the breeze up there, and he has it for the out.

one away in the orioles 4th. and again, the flags in the ballpark blowing in every possible direction. >> looked like last night, when mora hit the ball out to win for the orioles. >> jim h: foul ball down the line. >> jim p: you would think that that means the wind is blowing out to right, but a lot of times, you'll see the flags when the teams are hitting batting practice, or sometimes we feel it here, where the wind is actually blowing into the booth, and you're very happy, because booth barbecue smoke comes right in. >> jim h: now, if i'm reimold right now, i request time, because there's a plastic bag blowing around out there. >> jim p: it is headed to short stop. >> jim h: now involving scutaro more than reimold.
2:52 pm
that's god both to be a distraction. it's the same color as the baseball. >> jim p: now he'll go over. marco is also a grounds keeper. there you go. that's a big bag. >> jim h: 1-2 is bounced foul. marco helping out nicole sherry and her crew. i'll take care of this one. reimold looking to get that stroke back. >> jim p: well, he's not getting a lot of low fastballs. there's a breaking ball right there, and he's just going to roll over, and everybody is dodging and ducking. >> jim h: these a ground paul. there is a base hit for reimold. he is on with a one-out single. so he snaps an 0 for 10, and you certainly want him going to the break feeling better about his swing. >> jim p: well, when, you talk

to terry crowley, the batting instructor, when you have a big strong guy, has had some success, and he certainly has, he has the rookie player of the month, you start to think you're going to get those pitches all year long, and they make adjustments. there is aaron hill for the blue jays trying to dive for it. and they change. you don't get as many fastballs. they try stay out of that zone, so you keep working on your swing, you get it short, and then you make adjustments. i mean melvin has to do it. anytime you're 37, you have to make some adjustments. for me, the perfect stroke for melvin, even though he's hit as much as 28 home runs, is the stroke he hits the home run on. right center, left center you. just get get enough hits out there, they'll try to come, and in maybe hitter's counts, you'll turn on some balls. but it is very difficult to hit, and all you have to v to do is start looking at the

numbers. league average with two strikes is .185. that's why they tell pitchers to try to get ahead. >> jim h: reimold has good speed, measures his lead. melvin has a good hitters counsel here, 2-0, and he looks a at strike on the outside corner. >> jim p: body language. i don't think that ball was even close to being a strike, but dale scott is the only guy that counts. take a look right here. that's close enough. well presented by raul chavez. >> jim h: and it definitely looked like at the knee at the front end of the strike zone, which is all you need. not where the guy catches it. >> jim p: see, and that's pitching backwards. he's looking fastball, and he throws a slider. and that's what he did against

the rays. >> jim h: 2-2 on melvin. jo now, just imagine, you now have two strikes, they're going down towards that .185, you have to protect in and out, up and down, fastball, change-up. >> jim h: see it and hit it. reimold runs, swing and a miss, and no throw to second base, as chavez lost the handle of it, so instead of rushing a throw, he held on to it. so reimold steals the base, his second, mora is down on strikes for the second out. >> jim p: and rzepczynski, and there's the jump that reimold gets -- so again, right where chavez calls it.
