lack pitched for them. >> he fouled off the breaking ball to stay alive. >> let him hit a fly ball to the outfield. >> well, the top seven hitters in this line come bind have just one hit. that was thome's single off the wall. that's 1 for 18. he's only given up two hits total. the number 8 t batter wise, has that home run. huff keeps his foot on the bag. 3 up, 3 down go the white sox.
4:16 pm
and the o's have the lead. pp÷÷
4:17 pm
4:18 pm
jeremy guthrie has been great. plenty of offense when you have guthrie pitching like this. >> 8th inning now. carrasco stays on and it's fouled back. gregg has done a good job of adapting to the current role as the backup catcher. >> yeah. he's started to hit better. you know he can catch. >> weed ers is in this series. he's 0 for 9. he gets the day off and can collect his thoughts. it's a great job behind the plate. >> it's nice when you're pitching well and you bond with the catcher. >> yeah. >> it's really important. weeders talk
4:19 pm
s about it. you have to get the experience. >> the thing about this season is gaining is experience. all of the players are amore of the o's future and they are getting the firsts out of the way, getting the adversity out of the way. that will make them better players sooner. the hope is as soon as next year. they know what they need to do and what to expect and now they have to do it! that's true for anybody. >> when you talk about the defensive capabilities, he was ready to catch in the big leagues. he was never going to be a guy where he had to hit. they were looking for me. hitting would be a bonus. i am a catch and throw guy. he's the number one prospect in the minor leagues to get a chance to come
4:20 pm
to the big leagues. you're supposed to be a hitter and going to be a switch hitter. there's a lot of stuff going on. you talk about baggage. >> yeah. >> the game is so much different up here than at any other level. it's the highest level there is. again, he's going to have to make adjustments. >> we'll have to talk to him again. >> the ball is hit towards the middle and won't have a throw.
4:21 pm
it's a one-out single. that's his first hit for the day. guthrie is pitching a 2-hitter. roberts has a hit and a run scored as well as a stolen base. text in your vote now and have your voice heard. >> the o's have their 7th hit. roberts stay s low. >> it was in the first pitch of the game, he was looking for another hit to extend the multihit streak. the other
4:22 pm
thing that the young players is once these young players hit september and they go beyond labor day and have three more weeks of games, that's without a doubt enlightening. >> yeah. the astask ahead for andy is that how do we monitor the innings? you don't want to have them -- you don't know the magic number. no more than 30 innings or something like that. >> some are 50. >> yeah . >> some are 40. >> you want to figure out ou that's going play out. the one thing -- when you talk to the other teams as we do, they have tremendous respect for the o's
4:23 pm
offense. they are saying that the kid was better than we thought. to me, that's a comply meant. he's made some improvements. after that game, he pitched well again in seattle where they didn't have the best stuff. ferguson is one of those games where you have the run support and it's usually for the 7th inning. jones bounces it towards the middle. there's the tourist. bottom of the 8th is coming up. the o's have the lead, 6-1. this is the new e-class. this is mercedes-benz. coors banquet has been brewed in one place...
4:24 pm
and one place only: golden, colorado. it's followed one tradition: use the best high-country barley... and only rocky mountain water. and it's been brewed under one motto: never compromise. now maybe this means we're a little set in our ways. but we know a few guys who will drink to that. coors. the banquet beer.
4:25 pm
this is the new e-class. this is mercedes-benz.
4:26 pm
fouled back. 2 and 2. >> you go running and support nick and support brian. >> absolutely. >> right . and you go to the games. >> well, you do that first. >> yes. >> 135 games. the park at the zone, help the kids, see the o's beat the angels. 2 and 2. foul fouled back. >> complete game is lost and that fast ball is just missed
4:27 pm
inside. again, the pitch count is 98. i would imagine maybe you will see the bullpen get a little activity. high fly ball to right. that ball is going to go. second home run. it's a 6-2 game. >> another solo, that's the good news. >> it came right at him. >> you can see that's one of the two-steamers that nails back. you have to give chris a lot of credit. a very short swing. he makes him pay for it. beckham is now at bat! the o's
4:28 pm
are hoping guthrie stays. that's the first hit with two strikes on the hitter. >> huff gets him on the back end and it's 1 away. >> yeah, shortstop is knowing good speed, you have to get over it, catch it and release, all in one motion. it loads off the right leg and pushes off. >> wise hits the high fly ball right center field and mark is waiting for it to come down. 2 down and 1 out. >> wise is retired.
4:29 pm
one out of three with the solo home run. >> he had another home run on his mind. 2 down in the inning. >> here's bane and he will be abducted into the o's hall of fame. he certainly deserves it. >> what a terrific player. >> his numbers retired by the white sox. of course, he's allowed to wear it. >> i started him off in the first major league home run. i didn't make him hit it, he just hit it. he had 107 homeruns as an o's player. the numbers as an o are much better than you might realize because he's so associated with the white sox. his numbers retire here and here's the tribute outside the
4:30 pm
stadium. they used to have the numbers inside the stadium. when they renovated, they made that plaza outside. that's one of the nicest men you will ever meet. >> high foul down the left side. >> they have the numbers on the wall. let's see, bane, fox -- >> they used to have them on the second deck is what i meant. >> yeah. >> i actually forgot about those. >> i got caught. >> no , i know what you mean. they used to have them. >> yeah and then they made the club level and the numbers disappeared. >> revenue, jim. >> how could i misthat? >> -- miss that? >> there's the statute.
4:31 pm
it's a high fly ball, shallow left center field and here comes reymold. reymold was deep. home rupb n for the sox off the bat of chris and it's a 6-2 game. as boston lager. the sam adams lager goes beautifully with a lot of ethnic spicy foods. the maltiness and hoppiness work well with indian food. samuel adams boston lager is strong enough to support a heavier meal and it's balanced enough that's it's not going to overpower a lighter meal it could compliment a salmon dish with a little bit of spice to it. whether at a restaurant you're at home if you're having great food and you need a great beer, boston lager is the beer that i use. sam adams with great food-- there's nothing better.
4:32 pm
4:33 pm
guthrie is on the bench. eight peer it appears -- it appears that probably will be it. good job to him. a couple of solo homeruns. pena came over on the july event. there's the numbers, and it's good stuff. he threw the ball well on friday night. carrasco came in during that mess of an inning in the 5 5th. he allowed an inherited runner to score and got out of the jam without further damage. he saved the rest of the
4:34 pm
bullpen. >> he made a lot of good pitches. >> here's nick leading off. the o's have done a good job at the plate today in being patient. obviously, the command of the pitches by the white sox has a lot to do with the 7 walks but the o's are being patient and allowing it to get deep enough to draw those walks. >> ball three, outside. >> you know the count on mark. nick doesn't have a hit in the game but has walked twice and scored a run.
4:35 pm
>> strike is taken all the way on 3-0. tony pena -- that's cut and fouled it back. >> pena is 4th in the major leagues since '07. he was leading the diamond backs. >> 3 and 0 to a full count on mark. it's fouled back again to stay alive. nick has a
4:36 pm
five-game hitting streak on the line. >> eight hits during the five games and four of those are doubles. >> hard hit ball, just fouled. he just missed hitting it down the line for an extra base hit. >> we're going to have to get an opposed mutual. he held his bat very much like nick. >> i am not really sure if maybe his stance was that wide but it worked for both of them. fly ball to left and there's podsednik. that is an out.
4:37 pm
every o player in the lineup today has been on base. a hard hit ball down the line. that's the glove of konerko. the fan reached on the floor and touch -- reached over and touched that so it's a ground hit rule.
4:38 pm
>> there's your low inside fast ball and he's all over it. konerko wants to be able to play against tampa bay, he made some awfully nice plays. that was a very difficult play. >> no reason to get in the way of that one. >> tampa bay is here tomorrow to begin a 4-game series. >> night games are monday, tuesday and wednesday and a day game next thursday. melvin moore has a chance for an rbi. the rays are a team with 6 games under 500 on the road. 20 wins, 26 losses.
4:39 pm
there's jim johnson getting loose to pitch the 9th inning. >> there's a good slider right there. 93 with an 88 miles per hour sliderment r. -- slider. you can see how he has success in the national league. 1 down and huff is at second base. it's fouled back. right handers are batting just 2.27 against fee that in his career. -- pena in his career. he was 5 and 3 with
4:40 pm
arizona. he got traded for a youngster, brandon allen. haos a home run hitter. -- he's a home run hitter. >> that's a prospect they gave up to get a guy to help their bullpen. >> 1-2 and it's fouled back. moore is battling pena. >> back then, they were a valuable commodity. if you're going to get one established, the white sox knew that pena could step in and they knew what they were getting so you have to give up that talent.
4:41 pm
there was a line drive to center and it's a base hit. it got to it quickly. melvin moore extends the hitting streak for 3 in a row. they department get a guy that was as established as tony pena but they got brian bass. in september, they needed pitching and he turned out to be an integral part of the bullpen. you're always trying to add. it's fouled back and the o's have been swinging the bats since the all-star break. 3.13 team batting average. with one more hit, they would have had 10
4:42 pm
or more hits in each game of the series. they have 9. it's outside. contreras went four and a third. carrasco is 3 and two-thirds and pena is here in the 9th facing luke scott. he's 0 for 8 in the series. >> it's top of the lineup. >> one more run takes you out
4:43 pm
of the grand slam territory. it's a negative thought but a pitcher or manager's thought. >> 2-1 and scott didn't like that call. >> 6-2 lead. they could hit a grand slam and tie. that's the negative thing. positive thing, you have a 4-point lead. so don't walk anybody. >> right. don't walk anybody. >> line drive. there's a base hit for luke scott. that ball hits to the corner. there's the 5-run lead and moore heads to third and luke scott has an rbi double. >> luke will be able to end this series feeling good about it.
4:44 pm
>> there you get going again. there's mel vin all the way to third. now reymold is about to become a better hitter because they are down by 5 and cut off anymore damage in this inning. how many times have we seen the o's do this because you trail in ball games? >> it's apardonpart out process when you're cutting off runs and it puts pressure on the defense and the pitching and makes the hitter at the plate a better hitter. reymold has shown a lot of discipline for a kid as young as he is. that's a high fast ball and it's 1 and 0. another nice day for him. he's been on base a couple of times. he's been hit by a pitch, he's
4:45 pm
walked. it's low ball two. pena after getting nick in a deep at-bat, has given up a double, a single, a double. >> one down. good looking slider there and it's 2 and 1. >> the slider -- when i first came up -- sent a lot of guys home. the curve ball, you can time it better. the slider, well thrown, looks so much like a good fast ball. there's another one that backs up. but it catches the inside corner. we had a guy roger who was a
4:46 pm
great minor league hitter. the differ of freed and bailer is he could recognize the slider. reymold fouls it back. the good slider has touch a tight wound and if you throw it with the proper arm angle, it has great tilt. it will go from one corner of the strike zone all the way across but it does it quickly yet it reads fast ball out of the pitchers hand and that's why it's a difficult pitch to hit. >> reymold takes strike 3 and he knew it. slider is in there for the strike out. two men down! there's another backup. the back up is when you get under the spin. it will come down but not break in and across. you can see the spin on the ball and
4:47 pm
see how he frames it down. maybe it was inside. 2 down and pena gets the second out. there's ball one. two singles, an rbi and has also walked. good day at the plate forson. jim johnson has been waiting a long time out there in the bullpen! that's the second time he's been up. he waited a long time to get loose the second
4:48 pm
time. >> strike two. there's jim. to his left, there's allen. >> and the rest of the gang. >> yeah . who is the tkpwapg in the middle -- gang in the middle? >> george cheryl. >> it is gone. there's a 3-run homer for gregg. it's a 4 rbi game. when what a day for gregg. well, great day at the plate and behind the plate. watch him drop the bat head on this ball.
4:49 pm
all he did was -- the key to hitting is the passive to the bat to the ball. how do you get the bat head into position to hit the ball hard. he does it there. pena looks like a bobble head. he can't believe it. >> there's a liner and it's off the bat. that ends the inning. gregg's 3 -run homer caps it. jim johnson is coming on and we head to the bottom of the 9th. each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. grab your bag . it's on™west so our low fares stay low. 4:51 pm
there's a man with two singles, a home run, and 4 rbi game for gregg. >> he takes advantage of the time he gets to play. tkpugt reu will tell you how good of a -- guthrie will tell you how good of a job he did behind the plate. this is a tuneup. late lately, it's been a little bit of release point issues for jim. brian knight is out there talking to him. this guy is
4:52 pm
10-2 in favor of the o's. we'll get the bench players at bat. >> he's an infielder but has played outfield. he likes the outfield he says. it's serene out there. >> yeah, nobody is behind you. if you're in the infield, you have guys in the outfield. that's a little bit of pop. johnson gets ahead of him. >> it looks like he has steve. >> dowel foul deep down the left side and back out of the play.
4:53 pm
>> mark is 14 and 1 in the last 24 starts. breaking ball hangs and it's fouled off. >> jim johnson is getting an inning of work. he's not been in the game since last week end after pitching an inning. >> there's strike three. inside corn er, perfect pitch and one away here in the 9th inning. jeremy guthrie is 44% edging up
4:54 pm
roberts with 36 and gregg is 20%. gregg just got a home run. vote for gregg. come on, folks. text in your votes. results are coming up on extra's post game. >> you are roots for the under dog. >> i always do. there's a broken bat and a base hit. anderson gets a hit. >> i am impressed. he just fights it off and it comes apart in his hands. >> brian anderson gets a base hit and he's on with one down.
4:55 pm
fields is coming up. beckham took over at 3rd base. >> fly ball to left field and it's chasing reymold back and he has a play. on the warning track, grabs it for the out and it's 2 men down. >> there is no doubt trying to smooth out josh fields that he's got the strength to hit 40 homeruns. >> a lot of strike outs though. it's just missed the home run. >> his name keeps popping up in trade thoughts as well. >> yeah. beckham is coming in and playing even though it's not your pro toe typical baseman. he doesn't hit with a lot of
4:56 pm
power. this guy does, though. >> yes , he does. >> high, ball two. there is beckham on the bench. >> gordon david needs a hair cut. >> mull let night was friday. >> i bet you had one in high school. >> i had a little bit longer hair in the '70s. i have pictures. i'll try to bring them in and show you. >> this was then. >> any anything you say. >> haour sure. right. you're catching on. >> wow.
4:57 pm
the center field cameras are underneath his name. that's where the ball landed the other night with the grand slam. watch this bat speed. lift and launch. >> not bad for a soon to be 39-year-old. >> 3-2 inside and he draws a walk.
4:58 pm
it's 0 and 2. >> the white sox are right in the race even though they are 4 above 500. that's why everybody is expecting because they are in the central. that's a win bl division. the tigers are in first. >> the twins no longer flay red sox -- play the red sox, yankees
4:59 pm
or tampa bay. >> most people think that's a distinct advantage. time will tell. the o's come back leer to chicago -- back here to chicago again. it that been just one series in each ball park. >> late august, i believe. >> that's right. 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. another weekend. >> 1 -2. low, and it's 2 and 2.
5:00 pm
>> 2-2 pitch and the o's win the game. good day all along. time hreu ly hitting and the o's win it by a final of 10-2. more o's action as the birds travel to new york to begin a 3-game series with the yankees. masn begins at 6:30. now for our entire crew, we're saying so long. today's telecast has been a masn presentation.
5:01 pm
the o's win tpr for a 5th time this year. >> well, i thought the o's today were very patient at bat which is what they needed to do. he had his trouble against the o's. but it's aggressive on the bases today with the right people. who they are going to be aggressive with is what they have to define. i don't want to see huff trying to steal second and third. the rest of the guys took advantage of the white sox. their catchers have a tough time getting rid of the ball too. i liked their whole game plan today! he's 14 for his last 29. harris is right now with gregg. >> gregg , it's great for a win on sunday.
5:02 pm
did it seem early that a loft scoring happened -- lot of scoring happened? >> they were very patient. hosea continue reras has great -- contreras has great stuff. we're getting in good hitting counts and took advantage of the errors on their end. >> take me through that at-bat? >> it was tough to see here at the end. i had never faced pena before. it was hard and it was right where i was swinging. it was good for me to get that extra one. >> it seems like you're always taking advantage of every opportunity out there. >> absolutely. i just go out there and try to help out anyway i can. i can here to do other things on the days i am not plays. but a work really hard
5:03 pm
and my main bole is to get pitcher a win. i give it over to the bullpen after a few innings. >> tell me about his outing, a 3-hitter >> he wanted to be aggressive and threw great breaking balls against tough hitters. you know, we got him dialed back in. for the most part, he was in the strike zone. he shook me up a couple of times to throw a fast ball. he felt like he had a good one. >> goodwin and enjoy the flight to new york. >> tom? >> thank you. >> roberts walked and advanced to third.
5:04 pm
he scores on this wild pitch. >> the white sox were self-destructive by these wild pitches. the o's just took advantage of that. roberts went to third and it was a good job.
5:05 pm
when you look at the 11-bait hit and the o's controlled the ball game early. jeremy guthrie worked 8 strong innings. tkpugts reu was really on today -- guthrie was really on today. >> well, we talked about it before and it's tempo. what guthrie needed to do was get time away and find the reprogramming of the computer. i like watching the balance. his head is right there on the strike zone. he stayed behind most of the pitches. that pitch was not a bad pitch. he gave up the home run and went right back to work again. guthrie give up
5:06 pm
too many homeruns but i'll take this kind of effort from him every time out. he had great movement on the fast ball today and changed pitches well. he worked with his fast ball today and he had great tempo. he didn't try to overthrow. this is what he has to do to get back on track. >> maybe his best effort for the season? >> i like it. he's been struggling so much and he tried to overthrow and couldn't find the release point. the hanging curve ball and changeup, all of that stuff got out of whack for a while. you have to go back and get control of your best pitch and it was movement on the fast ball for guthrie today. guthrie went back to the king of the rotation by being able to throw the ball over the plate and now he's got
5:07 pm
his 7th win. if he continues to pitch, he'll be over 500 soon. >> time to look at the player of the game. it turns out to be guthrie with 48% of the vote. roberts came in second and gregg had 20% of the vote. the o's beat the white sox. 10-2. 41 and 50 is the birds. ?
5:08 pm

5:09 pm
the o's had an interesting 5th inning. they scored 5 times in the inning on 3 hits, 3 walks
5:10 pm
and 1 hit batter. it was like a multitude of things in that inning. gregg got involved where he went into the double play. >> the o's have had trouble running the bases this season. it's a broken double play. gregg stops and force it is second baseman to come after him and the fact that the runner scores before they actually touch gregg for the second out of the game, allows the o's another run in the inning. those are thing that is don't show up in the box score but help you win a lot of ball game and put pressure on the white sox today. it was good base running today.
5:11 pm
>> that's a good hustle on part of roberts today. another stolen base today was reymold that goes all the way to third base and gets in scoring position at third. today, that was what the o's needed to do. adam jones is in the second base too and be careful about the head first slide. he almost hurt himself and separated his shoulder there. it didn't happen and he was okay but it looked like a hard slide. >> it's interesting the the white sox used to be known as the
5:12 pm
go-go white sox. but the o's were doing all the go-going in chicago! jim, great performance today. >> well, he's an outstanding catcher. he was talking from a defensive standpoint, he was ready to catch in a big leagues. it's a great stroke in the ball game. call in a game is really important. it's a 3-run. it doesn't make a lot of difference. it looks good on the resume. he did an out standing job. any time you get a guy like guthrie to come back
5:13 pm
and a lot has to do with the pitch calling and the fact that -- it was a close ball game and it was 1-1. but this was anybody's ball game in the 5th inning. guthrie pitched well and gregg had a lot to do with that! guthrie got the layoff and gets back on the mound today. what an entirely looking different pitcher today. the tempo was not rushing. it paid off. more movement on the fast ball at the same time! you know, i hang on your words and i was listening and doing my notes. usually the ball straightens out and you don't have the kind of command. a couple of thing that is come to mind, jeremy was more enthusiastic. he pitched on the 7th and i think he was pap happy
5:14 pm
tote -- happy to get back on the mound and throwing with good velocity. that 90, 91, i think he's better at those numbers. you have an umpire that's not your american league umpire or major league umpire and they took advantage of the strike zone and made great pitches. the fast ball and changeup to wise. you give your team a chances to win and you're back on track. for the o's to perform, he's going to be a big partover it. he's got a big opportunity to maybe win more games than he's ever won in a major league level. >> we appreciate your comments and we are looking forward to new york playing the o's. >> thank you very much. >> when you look back at the
5:15 pm
game, that big victory and gregg helped the victory with the 3-run homer late in the game to pad up the score, it's time now for dave trembly. he's with jim hunter. it's brought to you by verizon wireless. >> thank you very much. guthrie is getting taoep in game -- getting deep in game. i think it goes to show if you locate, it's not how hard you throw. you locate it down and it's probably one of the better games i've seen him pitch. they had a big game and base running was very good and you know, it's a good one to get out of here with. >> guthrie's illness has a lot to do with the long lay off. do you think that benefitted him? >> he was ready to pitch and
5:16 pm
had get preparation before the game. he was red tkeurady to pitch. it was a nice outing for him. >> contreras didn't have the command that guthrie did but your hitters forced the issue by being patient. >> you know, he throws the sink at you and you have to be patient and can't pitch out of the zone. we did a real nice job and got big hits. we took advantage of walks and turning the lineup over and guys in the game getting big hits on us. >> robert steals the base and before guthrie takes the mound, he has the lead. >> you like that on the road and if last game of the series. robert set the tone for us and came out aggressive! enjoy the trip to new york.
5:17 pm
>> this will make it a whole lot easier. thank you. >> thank you . that's a report brought to you by verizon wireless. they have an off day on thursday and three games in boston through next sunday. all six games will be on masn. now when we come back, we're looking at jake. that's next when we continue with o's post game in a moment.
5:18 pm
5:19 pm
5:20 pm
time to look at the major league highlights. we have a double down the left field line. that's coming in the second with the boston red sox. this is 11th win. torrento blue jays are up. red sox beat boston 3-1 today. torrento is 3-1 over boston. new york, they win today as alex rod rod comes through with a solo home run. it's the 19 th of the season. mark had his 23rd.
5:21 pm
both homeruns have come off jackson. the detroit tigers and the new york yankees play at the stadium. they have won by a count of 2-1. you have tampa bay and kansas city, 4-3 rays in the top half of the inning. the seattle cleveland winning today. that was a 2-run shot. we'll talk about monday's starter in new york. that story comes up next when masn post game returns in a moment. beer. it has a very nice spice note. it has a little lemon zest and a historic brewing spice called grains of paradise. it's citrusy, lemony. sam adams summer ale. it just totally reminds you of summer, yeah.
5:22 pm
