how many rockets have they hit over on that side and they got it. >> rob: well, plenty and adam get it is breaking ball away and stays on it long enough to pull it in the hole and playing him more towards the middle to poibl get a double play ball and works into the national's favor and we have perez on the ropes. make him come to you, come on. >> bob: here's willingham who did walk the first time up and the nats want the ball in the air somewhere. i think we make a resolution right now. no more double play balls by big guys with runners on third. that was a change up he took low. that's low and in. omir santos to visit perez. it's the top of the hour right at 8:00 here in our nation's capitol and national's park,
8:01 pm
mets and nats scoreless. 5-2 the mets have the hit advantage. second game of the three game series and stammen and pelfrey tomorrow night. i think josh wanted to rip but didn't get a 2-0 fastball. >> rob: like i said, make him come to you and make him bring it up and make him bring the ball up to where you want to hit it to driving level. >> bob: up and in, 3-1. josh still looking for his first base hit in the second half.
8:02 pm
breaking ball in there. we'll see if jim riggleman does something with the runner at first and adam dunn is not a good combo though and willingham does strike out and fairly frequently and adam is not a fast runner so he's holding and a breaking ball pounded foul and willingham got part of his foot with that one and oliver perez is giving him a steady diet of curves. >> rob: that should show you something as a hitter, too and he's only getting the breaking ball over and too low with the change up. >> bob: does that mean you can look for the breaking ball more? >> rob: not necessarily. he still throws low 90s and look fastball. >> bob: there's a fastball but popped up. under it coy ra cora and now it
8:03 pm
will be kearns whose to get it done. >> rob: the thing about the breaking ball is it pulls the front shoulder back in and gets the mechanics together and throwing the breaking ball got him to the point where he can challenge josh with a fastball and he was lucky and someone has to make him pay. >> bob: josh willingham 0-14 since the break now and here comes austin kearns who struck out swinging on a check swing the first time. fastball up and i think the way austin kirns is going, the first fastball hi sees near the strike zone, he need to be ripping. zimmerman went to third on the adam dunn slow roller and i
8:04 pm
don't think kearns wants to get to two strikes and that's inside, ball 2. contact man gonzalez is next and last te austin kearns homered, the one we showed you on april 26th against oliver perez at city field. not even close, 3-0. >> rob: i think oliver perez knows kearns' numbers off of himself and would rather take his chances with gonzalez. >> bob: would you give the struggling hitter the green light? doesn't matter the pitch was way outside and four walks by perez
8:05 pm
who's only given up two hits. >> rob: you'd say he's effectively wild. >> bob: the base running bunch, zimmerman third, dunn second and after willingham popped out, kearns at first. if the nats don't score first in this game tonight, they won't have anybody to blame but themselves. z perez's pitches piling up and lannan already through four on 52 and he's just fine and here's gonzalez, 0 for his last 10.
8:06 pm
  >> bob: this is one of the at bats that will show riggleman what he needs to know about gonzalez. >> bob: good job with runnerst second and third this year but it's 0-2 here. breaking ball, base hit, maybe. nope, francoeur dropped it. there will be a force play. >> rob: he dropped it. >> bob: and he dropped it.
8:07 pm
may goodness the nationals lead 1-0 and jif francoeur was thinking about his throw home and forgot to catch the ball cleanly. what a crazy play. zimmerman scores, dunn to third and kearns forced at second and you can't blame him, he was in no man's land. >> rob: it's a couple of walks also and you see him looking, chaeting, looking home and he only forgot something and that was the ball. kearns was just dead at second but that's not his fault. a right fielder makes that catch 99 out of 100 times. >> bob: francoeur one of the best arms in baseball. >> rob: very nice. there's nothing kearns could do. no, nothing he could do right there. >> bob: i think you have to cleanly call it an error on
8:08 pm
francoeur. >> rob: i'd like to call it a fumble. >> bob: here's wil nieves who could put the nats up by two and there's a runner at third and adam dunn will score and the nationals lead by two as the bottom of the order hits a couple of runs home. for wil nieves his 7th hit at his last 11 at bats. >> rob: wil is a player. when he gets in the game, he does the things that maybe scouts may have missed years ago and got a big heart and that is a huge hit for the nationals. >> bob: john lannan who didn't show a whole lot of interest in his first at bat trying to put the ball on the bat here and see what happens.

  >> bob: i'd be jumping out of any seat too. it's the middle of the ball game and the nats are on top 2-0. can you give us the first 5th inning smile in awhile? >> rob: one stat i wanted to
8:11 pm
break down is adam dunn has as many home runs as the entire line up combined. 24 home runs and john lannan has been masterful tonight and getting ground balls when he needs them and held off the mets long enough to squeak out base hits and an error by francoeur and a sac fly and hopefully we can skoir more and breakthrough to perez in the next few innings. >> bob: do ewe like that number and in the area where you need to be? >> rob: absolutely. 12 to 15 is optimum when you're throwing the ball well and mixing up pitches and has a good breaking ball, change up fastball, isn't throwing as hard as we've seen him and doesn't need that to be effective and win ball games. >> bob: strike one by lannan to omir santos, 7, 8, 9. i just wanted you folks to see
8:12 pm
rob dibble smile here in the 5th inning. a bouncing ball left side and zimmerman throws it on target to adam dunn. >> rob: i am always happy. >> bob: i know you are. >> rob: people think i'm intins and working, a lot of people are nervous because i have this intense look on my face. i'm just concentrating and focussed. focus, everybody. >> bob: 2-1 strikes to nonstrikes to lannan so far. here's cora, national league one out in the 5th, pitcher next. you want to take care of your business here and get your team back in the dugout. because that was ruled a sacrifice choice, alberto gonzalez gets an rbi and nieves followed up. the little guys did good opposite field hitting and oliver perez made that pitch way
8:13 pm
too good for as far ahead in the count as he was. >> rob: nobody wants the nationals to win more than we do and barring us running on the field and playing with him, we want them to win every game. i was thinking about grabbing keith hernandez and going out there tonight but we're too old. >> bob: well, you'd like him rofrjt playing first and hitting third. >> bob: that ball served ofo the left side.
8:14 pm
>> rob: i was wrying to say on francoeur, on the ball he dropped, when you're walking guys, we talked about the tempo thing and defense. when the guy is throwing ball after ball after ball and you start to get flat footed and get back on your heals, that's one of the top five outfielders in the national leagues and he's a strong right field sxer you see him miss the ball and you go is that as much his fault or because perez has trouble throwing strikes and once again we talk about that and you got to throw it over the plate and up tempo and throw it and lannan does a dpraet job with that. >> bob: well, they share the blame. guzman gets there and he's got him. guzman's best play of the year and ended up on the left field line when i know that thing was
8:15 pm
done. zimmerman couldn't get it and guzman could and he show us an arm we vice president always seen this year. that's a fast base runner. >> rob: that's a fast base runner and a tremendous play right there and talking about tempo, keeping your defense in the game and look at that play by christian guzman. awesome. >> bob: a good stretch by the big fellow at first base. >> rob: let's xmo this may. you have to have an amazing arm to throw a guy out. >> bob: look at perez dragging a bunt and nieves throws him out. >> rob: how about the defense for the nats in the top of the 5th. man, we need a breather.

you know why i sell tools? tools are uncomplicated? nothing complicated about a pair of 10 inch hose clamp pliers. you know what's complicated? shipping. shipping's complicated. not really. with priority mail flat rate boxes from the postal service shipping is easy. if it fits, it ships anywhere in the country for a low flat rate. that's not complicated. come on. how about...a handshake. alright. priority mail flat rate boxes only from the postal service. a simpler way to ship. >> bob: the nats' fans are having fun and that was good defense after a good inning at

the plate and washington leads 2-0 and we go to the bottom of the 5th inning. trivia. which baseball announcer once traded for pat karales? i know pat was in texas and i thought the only announcer ever traded for a player was ereny. >> rob: let's check out the guzman play again because it is so outstanding. look at this right here, you have to have a feel for first base and you have no chance to get up and be perfectly positioned and follow through. you have to have all ability and how often does the guy come up
8:18 pm
the next inning? >> bob: first pitch morgan dragging the bunt foul. >> rob: if you don't think morgan has been working on this, he's been out the last few days. >> bob: you started all this. you told him to start bunting. >> rob: i didn't say at every at bat. i said use your spied to get some more infiled hits. >> bob: will, the element of surprise is gone now but he'll take a breaking ball outside, 1 ball, 1 strike. the cubs have tied the phillies 1-1 in the 5th inning. >> rob: did you sigh alfonso soriano drop the ball yesterday? >> bob: that is amazing. left field is something we do between at bats. there are players like that.
8:19 pm
  >> bob: maybe they played together oifr there, too. 3-2 oliver perez walked morgan last time and walked 4 men in 4 innings. >> rob: which ball do you want to throw, oliver? >> bob: jim riggleman looking for add on runs here. morgan gets hit. >> rob: we don't want to put him
8:20 pm
on that way. >> bob: on a fastball up and in. that's the 6th time he's been hit by a pitch this year. cardinals are coming in on thursday for a make up game and the may 3rd rain out ri scheduled for thursday at 7 and all original tickets will be valid for entry at every gate. get your tick its if you don't have the rain check 888-632-nats or online at nationals.com. all right, here we go again with the guzman morgan thing and he was running on the first pitch and easy fly ball to francoeur and gun it to first base and nyjer has to hustle back, one out. funny that francoeur drops a ball, doesn't get an error and then gets an
8:21 pm
assist. >> rob: i think he's very embarrassed and he's a good kid and probably sick, that's why he fired the ball to first. >> bob: it's hard for me to believe that somewhere in that play there's no error. they did get an out, i guess that's why. now morgan is running and the throw is high and off to the side and he just keeps the edge of his spikes on the base and that's number 29 for nyjer morgan. that was called no contest. so he's 5 behind michael board. >> rob: i love the fact he has a certain arrogance. picked off the first time and steals second and slid by the bag and i told you he's going to slide to left field. >> bob: i think he'll end in the bullpen one of these times.
8:22 pm
ryan has had a good night with a base hit, a walk and a run scored. and i suppose because they ruled it a fielder's choice sac fly, no error, both of the runs are earned. and the bottom line is the nats have a chance to tack on another right here. 2-0 breaking ball for a strike. >> rob: you're just mad because you have to pull out your white out. >> bob: i'm just doing a little touch up. my score book weighs about 5 pounds more at the end of the
8:23 pm
season than it did at the beginning from all the ink and the white out. >> rob: yeah, you're not flakey enough. >> bob: i don't handle idol time like you do. >> rob: you would have had to have been a starter, routine guy, pitched once every five days. >> bob: sister mary phillip always told me idolness was the devil's worship. >> rob: then i went to school and sister joseph monica was the principal and i had to stay after school one day and clean the desks. >> bob: i bet she never used the steel ruler on you. >> rob: no, she did not but some of the other nones did. >> bob: we're all better for it

8:25 pm
just looks to me when you look at the swings and could get fooled on the next pitch but ryan zimmerman sees the ball really well from oliver perez and there are certain hit irs who see the ball out of the hand of certain pitchers much better than others and this appears to be one of those match ups. he's up in the low 80s with his pitch count and that's a breaking ball that stays outside and ryan sighs that one well enough to draw walk number five. >> rob: i'm looking for the pat question. nine others that debuted with him the year i was born, tony perez, they all
8:26 pm
debuted the same year as pat corrales. >> bob: that was the same year they blew the big lead in st. louis and snuck into the world series >> rob: hello? bob euker. >> bob: oh, i get it. >> rob: must be in the front row. we knew he was foing to turn out a little different when i know they found him before game one of the '64 world series during the batting practice playing a tuba that somebody had handed down from the seats. how do you get a tuba in the ballpark for a world series game? here's adam dunn. >> rob: the reference couldn't be better from right now and just a bit outside with oliver
8:27 pm
perez on the hill. >> bob: more than once. adam dunn snuck a roller through the right side of the infield. they give him all the room in the world up the middle where the umpire is. that's way outside and castillo plays him to pull and cora chaeting up the middle a little bit for the double play. >> rob: let me hear your best euker on the last pitch. >> bob: how about get up, get up out of here. adam dunn, base hit and morgan scores and there's the throw and he is safe at third. 3-0, nationals. >> rob: speedy. >> bob: and adam dunn is 2 for 3 and rbi number 65.

  >> bob: bottom of the order, bottom of the 6th, gonzalez, nieves and lannan. adam dunn has tonight his 65th rbi of the year and a couple of base hits. john lannan really good so far, 77 pitches through 6 and ryan zimmerman on base three times taking the prepass twice.
8:38 pm
gonzalez has a high fly ball out of play left field. alberto will muscle up occasionally and pulled a home run down the line against philadelphia's cashman for his only home run back on april 16th. the nats won that game 8-2 so when gonzalez homers this year, they're undefeated. he has the 16th rbi in the crazy line drive sac fly play to right field.
8:39 pm
those are two real good right field line drive swings gi gonzalez and nieves. he gets jammed there and can't get out of the box and perez will just lob it over for the out. gonzalez 0-3, 0-2 with a sac fly and 0 for his last 11. here's wil nieves and getting the batting average back up there. wil nieves 1 for 2 and batting .271.

no swing. the nats have been out hit 6-4 tonight by the mets but this is a classic example of a pitcher whose beaten himself. 5 walks, a hit batter and numerous 2-0 counts. >> rob: well, and the long count that really lulled his defense into a sleep out in the outfield and tough to play defense behind a guy that doesn't throw strikes. >> bob: that ball hit hard by nieves and didn't miss a homer by more than 7 or 8 feet. >> rob: laser. >> bob: wil's only career home run was opposite field. walk off a year ago may against the cubs right field bullpen. >> rob: the pitch on the inner half and he turns on it and jacks it going, going just foul. it was that close.
8:41 pm
  >> bob: in fact, in their careers when gonzalez homers, the nats are unbeatable, 2-0. >> rob: you seem pretty proud of yourself for that one. >> bob: he'll take the walk. why not take 90 feet when the pitcher hands it to you, his 6th walk of the night. >> rob: he probably said i'm not messing around with this guy. >> bob: there's only one out and he may be creating a problem for himself but this is not what the mets signed up for when they gave oliver perez all that money. >> rob: no? $36 million, $12 million a year for this?

looking for rbi number 31. from what i've seen of him now and not quite three weeks, he doesn't give away too many at bats and has a real good plan every time in there. it's either left field or a bunt or moving a runner. i haven't seen him make that many outs and as i say that, oliver perez runs a fastball right under his hands and the nats leave their 6th runner and lead 4-0. from that first dollar forward, cash flow isn't just an important thing to small business. it's everything.

but he would not extend beyond next week -- the and conditional reinstates meant aspect of it is interesting. not the first time that he would use this model. he would reserve the right to extend or deaf it, but give him the green light to go to training-camp if he sign wes an n.f.l. team. >> where would this meeting take place? in new york? or what did you know on that? >> that's what we don't know. and, whether it is by design, the league is, both sides have been very under the radar, so to speak, on all these details. the time and location of the meeting, with we were -- we were told it was being finalized. maybe they are finalized already. i would be a little surprised if they had the meeting at the league's main office on park
10:39 pm
avenue, in new york. there are other locations, that they have to meet. to keep it from being a media circus but you never know. >> a lot of this news is just coming out right now. do you see any reason why he would allow him, to go to training-camp, and then around the first of september, continue to have him suspended? >> well, by that -- by september 1st that's the first mandatory of this news is coming out now. do you see any reason why roger goodell would allow vick to go to training camp and then around the first of september continue to have him suspended? >> well, listen, september~ ~1st is the first mandatory date for roster cuts. so that would be kind of the target date. and i think that the commissioner might be poised to reinstate vick completely. but during that month time, continue to observe vick. or see if there's any new forward.on to cometh. or, you know, that comes forward. and if there is some, that would be negative. and if it cast vick in a negative light, at which point he could say, you know what, you get to lurn this year, but you're going to serve four more weeks or eight more weeks.
10:40 pm
>> he could say i'm satisfied, and he's warned that any further missteps could lead to your banishment into the league. he could do that. or, if the commissioner comes out with his meeting friday or thursday, and doesn't feel good about it, as one source told me, if it's not positively productive, then he could choose another option other than conditional reinstatement. but let's facet, it, july 20th, everybody's known this day was coming. the league's been working on this behind the scenes. there's been dialogue behind the scenes. so the work, a lot of the work has been done except for this meeting with vick, and that's why this is going to happen sooner than later. and certainly get intoa a camp and we'll let you know when and where you're playing at a later date. >> okay, chris, let's talk abot the possible options for michael vick. what teams are you hearing may be seriously interested in his services? >> i haven't heard any teams.
10:41 pm
juste as the league has tried to be clandestine, i think teams are even more successful being clandestine or either there is just no interest out there. but i know that there have been teams that have had internal discussions, but pretty much shot down. shot down by the owner or sometimes it's by the coach, or sometimes by the general manager. i mean, we have speculated, and that's all it is. a team like the new england patriots might be the team. they've got the type of stability in the locker room. we know that belichick likes versatility. you know, he could use vick as a wildcat. he could use vick as a scout team quarterback playing the wildcat. though he doesn't haverb a rooke quarterback athlete that they drafted this year that could do that. but, you know, teams like the oakland raiders. i mean, it's certainly tom cable was in atlanta when i think michael rushed for 1,000 yards. so, that would be one team everybody will always speculate about. but they said no. they're not interested.
10:42 pm
so if the raiders are saying no, what's that mean? i think that teams won't come out of the closet, so to speak, until they get word from the commissioner. >> all right, certainly it'es going to be a story that chris, you will bee all over. i'm sure sal paolantonio as well. nfl insider chris mortensen, thank you so much, sir. >> all right, coming up, it was almost one of the great stories of all time. as he prepares for the senior open, tom watson reflects on what got away. plus carlos boozer says he's most definitely leaving town. most di'm robert shapiro.own. over a million people

and that's exactly what he intends to do. >> i had it in my graspp, the ball was in the air in the 18th hole after hitting the 8-iron as solidly as i hit it. i thought this might be mine. but knowing links golf the way i know. it wasn't going to be mine until the ball stopped rolling, and it rolled about six inches too far, and i couldn't deal with it after that. it was gut wrenching. i had a huge pit in my stomach, it wasn't very much fun to be able to take that. it was not easy. but this too shall pass. and it did pass. it's gone now, and i'm on to a different tournament this week. that's the way i've always lived my life. you can't look back and change things. you can't look. hey, tomorrow, you don't know what the heck's going to happen tomorrow. >> in my career, strangely

enough, i've had big disappointments like this that have inspired me to do something good soon afterwards. >> disappointing finish for watson. what a finish in philadelphia. bottom of the 13th, two out, two on, and jason werth is done for the night. a three-run homer. no holding penalty. that one's going to count. 4-1 the final score is sixth home run of july for jason werth. 2 for 3. overcoming an 0 for 4 by ryan howard as the phillies win a thriller. jimmy rollins with the solo homer early in the game. he's hitting nearly 400 in july after hitting .167 in june. great game in philadelphia. full highlights coming your way later in the night. >> we're now joined by espn.com senior writer, mark stein. because there isar a lot going n in the nba with some pretty big names. let's start with the biggest of them all, carlos boozer. what is the latest? >> well, the utah jazz, it's no

secret, got a trade in. but they have until february to move him. so now that they've matched the machine on paul millsapp, there will be a boozer trade that's assumed all over the nba map. but they're still trying to sort out the proposals. there is no secret that boozer wants to end up in miami. the heat certainly have interest. i'm told that this is something that dwyane wade would love to see happen. but utah wants to shed payroll in a deal, and come away with a player who can crack their rotation they don't just want to give booze era way. so with those objectives in mind, they're probably still going to have to have a third team to help facilitate a deal, and not continue to slow things down or keep things from happening in the next five minutes. >> does that make odom a more realistic fixture in miami next season? >> the the odom thing is separate. but if.if odom does decide to go

miami, the heat will try even boozer.o get because they won't be a cap room team in the summer of 2010. so getting boozer becomes even more attractive to them, because they'd have boozer's bird rights. you won'tr worry about having cp room to signom him. and you've added two quality forwards that you would have to think convinced dwyane wade for the long-term future there. now with odom, he's got the standing offer from miami. five years, 34 million. there would be an opt out after 3 for him to go back down to the market and try to make more money. he can jump at that whenever he's ready. but the factt that he hasn't tells you that the prospect of him resuscitating talks with the lakers has not been extinguished. >> it looks like miami's sort of trying to present itself as a top tier team the east. where orlando already is. anda they've had a very busy off season. they've signed matte barnes, an athletic swingman. what does that tell you? >> well, the magic have reallye

been in a lot of ways the surprise team of this off season. because they've just really been throwing around a ton of money. we've talked all throughout the playoffs about how the luxury tax implications of keeping someone like turkoglu or trying to hang on to them, how difficult that was going to be. they made it to vince carteri before they even got to the point of dealing with turkoglu. turkoglu left, but they matched on gor tan, which surprised everyone in the league. they signed brandon bass, and now a little more to sign mattel barnes. it just tells youh that rich devos, the owner there has been in this league a long time. the magic made the finals in '95. took them 15 years to get back. he doesn't want to wait and go through another 15-year wait and losing shaq, and everything that the magic endured between their twoe trips to the finals. they're close, and they're trying to get back there and stay there. and really, if you look at history, the lakers are the

first team in 20 years that lost the championship one year and won it the next. the last team that had done that was the pistons in '89. so ia think orlando's aware of that and doing everything they can to make sure that they stay top dog the east. and today's nba when you see so many teams afraid to spend, you you've got to tip your hat to that when you see a team that keeps adding salaries. >> mark, go to the internet, type in those letters and you'll find good stuff. thanks as always for joining us on espnews. >> you got it. >> when we return, lance it continuing his battle with father time. see who landed the biggest pun
