8:01 pm
. >> bob: hi there little lady. going to the fourth inning, the padres lead the nationals 4-1. she says "i don't have to smile dad if i don't want to." let's talk about cristian guzman, not that many home runs, 58 in his major league career including the one he hit earlier tonight. but he is a line drive hitter who owecationnally gets all of one. >> rob: when you get good contact on a guy throwing 95 miles per hour grin good things
8:02 pm
happen, cristian guzman will swing, he is a great contact hitter and even their guy, gonzalez, when he got ahold of one, you know, , these guys are major league hitters, they didn't get here by chance, they got here by being very good hitters at every level they played at so you can't take even the 8-hole y lightly. even if that perfect game by buehrle, he was hitting .390. >> bob: cristian guzman can hit, getting that stroke back, a couple of line drives and he is aboard leading off the fourth and now you tv big guns coming. zimmerman, dunn anjoxtú zmhgtwo"of @e hi >>apoliz but, you know, my point being that it's all about contact, it's all about the torque and getting that bat head out there. even headley when he got jammed
8:03 pm
got a doub and it's knowing your limitations. that's the one thing i like about guzman, he doesn't try to be a home run hitter, he tries to be a slasher, a on base guy. that's hard for these guys, especially a guy like latos. >> bob: his last home run was eight days ago against the cubs. represents the g run here bottom of the fourth. he'll goright field, great swing, good contact, first and second, nobody out. withth adam dunn coming in. o÷ . >> rob: i wanted to blanks can do with that arm. okay, maybe not. >> bob: adam dunn had three hits lt night, we remarked at the time he looked like we willie dealer flaring them where they ain't. >> rob: adam wainwright had
8:04 pm
great stuff and adam dunn was just all over him. just need a little bit more help. . >> bob: so the nats with a big inning brewing here in the fourth inning. dunn tonight first time up, had his bat sawed off and popped up to first. . >> rob: i think the second time through the lineup you should be subtracting the breaking ball, latos has not thrown it for a strike tonight. subtract that, just look 95, get it, you should rip it. . >> bob: now this is the one time teams have to play a conventional defense against adam dunn. well there is a runner at second base, they have to leave somebody home near third and the shortstop, cabrera, up the middle with rodriguez.
8:05 pm
adam has been hitting the ball sharply on the ground and on the line. so he has got some hitting room out there for a change. but that's right at the second baseman and a relatively easy 4- 6-3, you want the ball in the air there, at least, it didn't happen, and the nats have grounded into 783 double plays this year. their opponents have turned 92 total. second double play of the night including a strike-'em- out/throw-'em-out earlier. and cristian guzman, it will take a nick johnson hit like the one he had first time to get the nats a run closer.
8:06 pm
nick is now batting .304. and a bouncer, alfonso keeps it in front. . >> rob: well it's also important right here for guzman because good fastball hitter at the plate, probably going to try to work him with as many breaking balls as possible, if that ball gets behind alfonso you have to get a good enough lead where you can score easily. . >> bob: there is a fastball but he gets on 2-0. plapap and i think there are way too many base runners who don't pay enough attention to
8:07 pm
where the third baseman is. guzman right now, if he wanted to, could be about 15 feet further down the line. >> rob: without a doubt. >> bob: if the pitcher steps off, so what, you've distracted him. >> rob: kouzmanoff is about 15 feet from the bag, you should be at least 15 feet off the bag. >> bob: kouzmanoff probably 20 to 25 feet at an angle. >> rob: he should be way, way down there, with the pitch. . >> bob: three balls in, a strike to nick. he'll take it. ball four. and the nats have runners at the corners with two outs for josh willingham. so two hits and a walk in this inning but the double play has stifled it so far. that's the first walk given by mat latos.
8:08 pm
now this time with a right- handed batter kouzmanoff is going to be much closer to the bag. but guzman still -- >> rob: but, still, once the pitcher starts going home he has got to be walking down the line. he can't just be standing there. . >> bob: i think we see this often with runners at second base as well and then you'll see him get thrown out at home from the outfield on a base hit because they haven't helped themselves enough off the bag. base running is such an important part of the game and i'm not sure it gets the attention it deserves. >> rob: still way too close to the bag and it's ironic, this weekend one of the greatest base stealers ever in the game rickey henderson goes into the hall of fame. >> bob: uh-huh. >> rob: i got a chance to talk to joe morgan and johnny bench and he said he looked at rickey henderson's stats, he couldn't
8:09 pm
believe how many stolen bases he had but how many runs he scored. he was an amazing lead off and base stealer, great baseball player. >> bob: people used to love listening to the yankee games, ricky would get on first, phil risk swriewt oh would start saying hi to all the bowling leagues over in jersey and before he would get done ricky was on third. 2-1 to josh, willingham takes it outside, scooter would say "eh white," to bill white"how'd he get over there"? ricky was amazing getting around the bases and sometimes he got histles around the bases with all those lead off home runs. >> rob: what was it, 81, about 81 lead off home runs? sound right? >> bob: sounds about right.
8:10 pm
>> rob: that's amazing. >> bob: let's see what josh has to work with here, a bouncer to third, kouzmanoff throws out willingham and the nats continue to hit poorly with men on base. strand add bunch last night and two right here. pa announcer: final boarding call... all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. bags fly free on southwest so our low fares stay low. grab your bag . it's on™ ( ding ) book now at southwest.com.
8:11 pm
. >> bob: this will not be a very flattering look at the president's race tonight. teddy and thomas. >> rob: well it must be the fed
8:12 pm
ra lift party versus the democratic party there. oh, a tripping george w. >> bob: man this politics is a dirty business. >> rob: it is. it is dog eat dog. >> bob: a masn fantasy camper from last year is here. . >> rob: wow. okay, what does that mean. >> bob: we had a big promotion, a lot of folks got to come up and have some fun. >> rob: how do you think i got this job. . >> bob: latos leads off top of the fifth, that was one of our fine bloggers in town, miss cheddar at the ball park with her husband. garrett mock has retired 10 of
8:13 pm
the last padres. >> rob: i think we should do a real fantasy camp, a baseball camp. the fans come down, ray night and myself. >> bob: johnny holiday roaming center field. >> rob: johnny holiday roaming and all the guys i played with, the coaching staff, yi von white as a roving instructor, we got bob poon, we could get a bunch of people to play against the bloggers. >> bob: i could just see some nice lady going to come up and say to me "why did rob ball brush me back?" >> rob: because i could, lady. blog about that. i'm kidding. >> bob: a good breaking ball. >> rob: great breaking ball right there. >> bob: tony gwynn and everett cabrera are next for the padres here in the fifth. rob dibble's nats fantasy camp. come if you dare. >> rob: no.
8:14 pm
>> bob: see, there you go. >> rob: you're profiling me. you just told me you would brush back a lady. >> rob: i would not. just my mother. she is a heck of a right-handed hitter. >> bob: she would charge the mound and take care of you. >> rob: oh geez, my mom? i'm not afraid of too much but when my mom raised her voice i'm out of there. >> bob: robert? >> rob: robert. >> bob: san diego's record 37- 59, the nats 28-67. they are 24 1/2 back of the dodgers, the nats are 27 back of the phillies. that will get through. and gwynn is 2 for 3 tonight. he may have found a home like somebody else named gwynn did in san diego after some struggling times with milwaukee. here is our friend the av flak
8:15 pm
duck, we call him med wick, he has trivia tonight. >> aflac. >> bob: the only switch hitters with more than todd simmons. >> rob: eddie murray, mickey mantle. >> bob: mickey mantle. >> rob: pete rose has the most hits ever. that's three. >> bob: that was r.b.i.s though, right. >> rob: i think he probably has more r.b.i.s too. >> bob: what about chilly davis. >> rob: what about chilly davis. >> bob: he was one of the best switch-hitters ever. >> rob: i know. that's a good one. switch hitters with r.b.i.s. i guess maybe pete had so many hits he would be happy to be in there. >> rob: yeah, i think he had
8:16 pm
them on that. . >> bob: what about here eh posada. ? he has been on a lot of really good teams with chances to drive in runs. mock has made two less than good throes to first base tonight, one of them cost him a run in the first inning. >> rob: yeah i suppose. >> bob: it cost him two runs. >> rob: we talked about keeping the runners close. you must listen to us. you cannot let him get to this part of the cutout right there with that left foot. foot. . >> bob: runner goes, good jump. good throw. got him. gornz pulled the tag down in a hurry to get tony gwynn who is
8:17 pm
now 3 out of 7 this year. . >> rob: on the lead if his foot is right there he probably steals the base. that half a step is what's probably going to get him at second. so the pitcher has to help the catcher and hold the runner close. >> bob: now it's 2-0 on cabrera and mock goes ball three. you don't want to walk him with adrian gonzalez next. there is guys hitting .220 and he walked him on four. i mean can you call that a mental mistake by the pitcher or is that just a physical thing where he couldn't get the ball where he wanted to? >> rob: i don't think it's that. i mean he's -- >> bob: i mean -- >> rob: you're not trying to walk the guy. it's one of those things where you kind of relax because
8:18 pm
you've got the guy off the bases with the throw-out so you're like "okay, i donald a bullet right there, two outs," and then it just be comes, i don't know, maybe hewlett up and your mechanics are a little sloppy and lazy and slow and voila, you go from the stretch back to the windup and -- >> adrian gonzalez a sac fly in the first. his 55th r.b.i. and a bouncer to second in the third. . >> bob: a pickoff at first. and, if you're cabrera, how can hewlett that happen with your most dangerous hitter in
8:19 pm
batter's box. what a crazy inning. a caught stealing after a base hit and, now, a pickoff after a walk. good throw right at the bag and they had it. tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "the dust might be settling... tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 that's great but i'm not." tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "i guess i'm just done with doing nothing, you know?" tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "oh, i'm not thinking about moving my money. tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 i am moving it."

8:22 pm
gonzalez coming up with mock and we check in with debbie taylor. >> all right guys. >> deb: i have a question for you. what do tiger woods, lebron james and the nats have in common? they are all using this renowned psychologist bob ra tell a, he met with the nationals as a group, the pitchers, the position players, he has given his phone number to the players, he is available as a resource for them. the idea is to get the peak performance out of the players and mike rizzo told me the team is using him to get the better out of the players. rick eckstein says this is an invaluable resource for his hitters too. bob? >> bob: interesting concept. baseball is a long season. i know you're kind of an old- school guy, your reaction to that? >> rob: two out of three ain't bad. just kidding. just kidding. tiger, lebron, nats. >> bob: pretty big names. >> rob: yeah, some pretty big
8:23 pm
names. team sport basketball, but lebron is quite talented. tiger woods is his own corporation. it's so hard when you have got 25 different egos and men tallets and -- >> bob: a fastball bounced out to short by cabrera, high throw and a good play by gonzalez. that's what, rob, you always talk about. if you throw the ball hard enough you still give your first baseman time to make an adjustment. >> rob: well, and it's getting rid of it quickly and, like i said, hard, and right there he gets rid of it quick, gonzalez makes a great save, but that extra half a second he is able to make the tag on gonzalez. sometimes when you have a lot of time it doesn't help you to hold the ball. get it, let it go. >> bob: there is garrett mock with two out and the bases empty. if he goosed that ball over
8:24 pm
there the runner either beats it or you have no time to recover. >> rob: no, but i do believe in those sports scotlez, at the end of my career they were just coming in in 80 -- '96 and helping the players, more so to relax them. nonot a lot of players know how to relax their minds. control your breathing a huge part of being a professional athlete. i also like the visualization part of it though. more the positive reinforcement side that some of these younger players need.
8:25 pm
debbie also reports that johnny smoltz and greg maddox used him. now there are two differing personalities. >> rob: well johnny smoltz was going through some rough patches back with the braves and i know that he would be in the stands i think with a certain-colored shirt on just so johnny would know he was there and johnny was able to get over some of his issues. >> bob: garrett mock takes a good hack on 3-2. hard to be that greg maddux would need anybody. he always looked, at least on the outside, to be in complete control of everything that happened between the lines. >> rob: he was a crumbling house of cards on the inside. >> bob: oh come on. >> rob: i don't know. >> bob: mock hits it hard but

'07 18 homers, 74 r.b.i.s, 30 doubles, last year 23 homers, 84 batted in, 31 doubles. and the padres can live with his 130 to 40 strikeouts every year. he is a big guy at have 1'," 210, out of evergreen colorado high school where he played some football. later played collegiately at nevada reno. andnd the '0-2, he hits it hard enough to get it by guzman. the right-handed batter, you can't cheat up the middle too far, and then kouzmanoff
8:30 pm
crosses up the nationals by taking one to guzman's left. >> rob: well, you see him playing in for the double play, those couple of steps that maybe if he is back near the grass he catches it, throws him out at first, but there was nobody on and that's what happens. sometimes with the defensive configuration. . >> bob: nats park in our nation's capital, bob carpenter, debbie, and ray, bob deductible,. >> rob: steve mcaddy wants a check. . >> bob: 3-1 against the padres. 7 hits now given up by garrett mock and with every appearance he makes jason bergmann appears to becoming more important to jim wriggleman an steve mcaddy. sometimes we'll see him in the
8:31 pm
sixth inning, sometimes we'll see him in the eighth. they have attacked him for two hits anne only three pitches in this inning. 78 the games, head really one for two with a bloop double. and he misses away, ball one. well, here is a situation just like the nats had, two on, nobody out, a left-hander in there, adam dunn hit the ball on the ground, double play. 2-0.
8:32 pm
big kyle blanks is next. . >> rob: well if you're mock, and i'm sure that mcaddy told him, i'm sure he already told him he blanked out him a couple times, get that gym shot double, put him away and work on the big righty. . >> bob: that ball driven to left, and it's going the fall. >> rob: oh. >> bob: coming around third and i'm a little surprised adrian gonzalez didn't score. in my opinion, that's bad base running. there was no way adam dunn was going to catch that ball. he could have broken off second base like there were two outs, rob, and scored easily. so the bases are loaded with
8:33 pm
nobody out. >> rob: i couldn't agree more with you but, here is the big but, pitcher in trouble, throws a nice sinking fastball there, turns it over. no outs, better to have the bases loaded than an unbelievable throw by adam dunn. it might be taken into consideration that gonzalez isn't the most fleet afoot. >> bob: here is kyle blanks. bases loaded, nobody out, infield in. padres have eight hits now, our base running bunch, gonzalez, kouzmanoff and headley all with singles.
8:34 pm
. >> rob: sphowl ball off the back outside ankle. >> bob: now that's a strange place to get hit. >> rob: that's really turning your hips into the ball. . >> and he came home. . >> rob: got that shin protector wrong side. see if he does it again. oh my goodness, hits it off his right toe bone. >> bob: oh, man. >> rob: that whole right ankle- foot area will be wrapped in ice after the game. come on, big strapping young man like that, no way he comes out of the game. come on. >> bob: this telecast presented by authority of the washington nats, doctor deductible, and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form.
8:35 pm
the casualties and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of the washington nationals. one ball and two strikes. nasty breaking ball, he fouls off another. . >> rob: he struck him out twice and now he has abused the lower right extremity, the kid is not going to like garrett mock very much. . >> bob: nervous time in this ball game, san diego a chance to bust it open here in the sixth. target away. got him on a big hook. foror a very important first
8:36 pm
out. garretttt mock has five strikeouts tonight and kyle blanks three of those. . >> rob: i'm going to say this strikeout right here keeps them in the ball game. good sinking ball, the old golden sombrero. >> bob: luis rodriguez took garrett mock deep last time. now, with one out, the infielders back up a bit. zimmerman still each with the bag at third. looked like a change-up high. >> rob: i apologize, i was just told that the hat trick, which was only in hockey. >> bob: four is the golden sombrero. >> rob: what do you call it the golden sombrero. >> bob: that ball gives a good night to rodriguez. two runs will score, another
8:37 pm
runner to third, san diego leads 5 to 1. . >> rob: well rodriguez a pretty good night, home run his last at-bat an then a couple of r.b.i.s on this single. . >> bob: garrett mock is going to be done after 5 1/3 giving up nine hits, four of them in this inning. jason bergmann will get the call here. the nats are down by four as the padres have a chance to score even more. we want to pay for. on top of it all we're still trying to put away some money for the future. with the wish list, we can save up for anything we want. and still have enough to cover the day-t0-day. plus, the savings engine helps our money grow. and that's something we need and want. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc,

. >> bob: let's have a look at our coors light freeze cam brought to you by the world's most refreshing beer. >> rob: let's look at two leads. it's going to be a stolen base on the bottom, he will be thrown out at second. once the pitch comes in you see the man on the top will make it in safely and the the man on the bottom is thrown out. so your coors light freeze cam is about keeping the base runners closer to the bag. . >> bob: and it's also about base runners taking whatever liberties they can when they are not on first base as we were talking about earlier. >> rob: well, and you look at it, too, with the peripheral vision and if you loss sight of that guy as you're looking left
8:40 pm
peripherally out of that left eye you got to step off, you got to make the guy get back into the your vision, throw over or make him get back. if he gets too much he is going to walk to second base. >> bob: alfonso 1 for 2 with a double, runners at the cornersers. bergmann fires one to nick johnson. pitch out. the nationals thought, with the number 8 hitter, there might be a squeeze on. teachersrs and on third, chase headley. >> rob: runner on first. >> bob: we didn't mention he was the pitching coach but bud black did work with mike scioscia who is known for playing a national league style of ball in the american league more than any other manager
8:41 pm
over there. he loves speed guys, defense, nick johnson picking that one. that was not a good throw by bergmann. >> rob: you can't forget, you throw this by nick the guy at third easily scores, keeping them close, we talked about this. >> bob: man, he might have been out, i don't think the umpire saw that, the throw, the glove, the hand, everything was right there. i don't think nick even had to move his glove because it was already on the arm of the base runner. >> rob: sometimes you got to sell it as the first baseman, he would have been "oh i got him," screaming and yelling. >> bob: look at that. >> rob: i do believe. you got to come up and say "eh i made the catch, he is out." >> bob: nick can't control the ball. >> rob: got to have a bit of a beef with the umpire. . >> bob: you're correct. 1-2. popped up, right side.
8:42 pm
alberto gonzalez calls nick johnson off the ball as he should. two outs. that will bring up the pitcher, mat latos. latos is 0-2 with a ground ball to third and a called third strike. bergmann trying to keep this a four-run game.
8:43 pm
and that will help, on a ground ball handled by gonzalez, well done jason bergmann. two big outs. the padres get two big runs. and, now, they have a big lead. ve never had much. but now that i'm making more it's time to be a little smarter about how i manage it.. with the calendar, i can schedule all my payments. and when funds are low danger days help me stay out of the red. i can also transfer money with just a click and a drag. so maybe i'm better with money than i thought. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high-definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.

hitters with more r.b.i.s than the former catcher. mickey mantle. >> rob: eddie murray. >> bob: eddie murray, ah, chilly davis, c davis. oh, we don't know who george davis is. sorry. it's not chilly davis. it's not chipper jones. we should have had chipper. >> rob: the chip sister, forgot about him. >> bob: george. >> rob: because i always look at him as larry. larry jones. i don't know him as chipper. >> bob: larry jones was the best r.b.i. man of all switch hitters back in the early part of the 20th century. i guess only phil wood would have seen him. we'll put them together with the numbers.
8:46 pm
i wonder what position george played? i bench ooh he wasn't a catcher. >> rob: ridiculous numbers back in the day. >> bob: there is willie harris, 0-2. nats only have four hits. david eckstein and his brother rick in a ball park in '0poseing denver nuggets for the first time ever at the major league level. . >> rob: okay. george davis played 1890 to 1909, played every position in the infield. . >> bob: even pitched three games evidently. >> rob: he even was good with the quality h2o. the water boy too.
8:47 pm
. >> bob: did they throw splitters in 1890? i don't think so. >> splitters, spitters, i can go back. they had different rules. like if the ball bounced once and you caught it you were out. that rule. >> bob: oh, man >> rob: they used to have four strikes, too, i think it was seven ball games. they changed the rules along the way a few times. >> bob: that's on the corner and willie harris punched out by marty foster again. strikeout number 6 format latos. >> rob: remember, when you drop your gear at home plate in front of the umpire he is not happy about it and that's a borderline call, you better be swinging. >> bob: willie harris is 0 for

his last 15. no first-pitch fastball there. off speed breaking ball. guzman a homer, a single tonight, his first multi-hit game in a while. and for cristian guzman his 33rd of the year. the big bombers are waiting to see if they'll get a chance here in the sixth inning. guzman serves one to left but it's right at chase headley. two outs. three good at-bats by cristian guzman. >> rob: amazing that one hit
8:49 pm
that got him off the snide last night, today he comes back with a new attitude. . >> yeah, he has had three consecutive at-bats, zimmerman who singled to right field last time up. but against a pitcher making his second major league start the nationals aren't making much happen right now. they play this game for him, adam dunn's last at-bat, a double play ball with two runners aboard, nobody out. in at-bat time a two-run game. five strikeouts only one walk, to nick johnson after that double play ball back in the fourth.
8:50 pm
