eco friendly shopping b presented by fan friendly major league baseball players. fans coming into the ballpark tonight, it might be zimmermann, stammen or lannan, and kids getting their pictures with their favorite nats. what a nice way to come into the ballpark on a saturday night. now we're a little worried about some weather that might be coming into the ballpark. bob carpenter, rob dibble, we're talking about young pitchers again toontd the nats continue to bring young men to the major leagues like j.d. martin tonight. >> rob: well, we're in a situation of a rebuilding program that the nationals are under. when you have a lot of young guys, a lot of top prospects and you fall behind the pack a little bit, you can run a lot of guys out there. they've used 10 starters, that's third most in the national league and there's a lot of them that are under 26 years of age.
7:02 pm
the current rotation right now, 91 major league starts, 57 of them are owned by john lannan. it's a very young and growing pitching staff, and j.d. martin making his second ever major league start, first one wasn't that bad. a little bit of growing pain. >> bob: and the young starting rotation an e.r.a. of 4.89. ryan zimmermann was as tall as the washington monument last night with a base hit and a home run and his always great defense. he's on a pace 27 homers and 96 rbi's.

times, had a sacrifice. and he turns on that one, it's hooking down the right-field line. the runner just stood there at home plate. he's going to stop at second, and he should be on third. he thought that ball was going to hook. he stood at home plate and watched it. willingham couldn't reach it and cabrera is at second base, but that is not good base running. >> rob: no, and bud black will not be happy at him after the ballgame. as he's looking at it, looking at it, and, oh, i better start running. it's off that little screen by the bullpen door. he could have been on third rounding third going to home after it hit the wall and bud black thinking, okay, young man, we're going to have a little discussion after the game or even after the half inning. >> bob: when you're a 22-year- old rookie, you hit the ball and you run.
7:08 pm
now, rob, here's a situation, first inning of a ballgame, worst hitting team in major league baseball, best hitter, you can not let him beat you here with first base open. >> rob: you can't let him beat you, but when you're auditioning for a job next year, jim riggleman at this point, like we discussed before the game, probably going let him pitch to gonzalez. they want to see him get out gonzalez. yes, you want to win these ballgames, but you also want to see who do we like and who do we not like when you go into the winter meetings. >> bob: yeah, i hear you, but this is the most walked man in major league baseball, so nobody else is messing around. that's a breaking ball and he has thrown him some quality pitches here. and the count's 1-2 with one

7:14 pm
>> bob: nyjer morgan heads one to the gap. this ball's got some carry on it. hits right off the scoreboard and he's thinking three. a good throw gets him. it gets away. and he's on third base with nobody out. triple all the way from morgan who made up his mind he was going. that's his 6th triple of the year and his first as a national. >> rob: love the aggressiveness. right off the bat. hanging ball right off the scoreboard. should have been dead, but here's the throw from gwynn, bad throw from the cut-off man. you challenge the arms of the defensive team on the field and right there it pays off. >> bob: that's why pitchers back up third. >> rob: yes, but i don't recommend making the first or the third out at third.
7:15 pm
>> bob: now they have morgan hung up. no tag there. guzman's at second base now. morgan is tagged that time. that was a little careless. >> rob: hey, they're making some things happen right now. >> bob: guzman hits the shot right here. first pitch fastball, he's going to take it the other way. maybe even a breaking ball on the hands. but great play by kouzmanoff, cuts it off right here. nyjer does a great job avoiding the tag right there and trying to get his base runner to move up and get guzman in scoring position and guzman does a great job hustling into second. even though it was a mistake, he lasted long enough in the pickle to make up for it. >> bob: well, at least 2/3 of it. the nats don't have a runner at third with less than two outs

7:17 pm
2-0. you said he's on pace to hit 27. i'm going to say he hits 30. i think he gets hot again. >> bob: well, i hope so. he was on pace before the game to hit 27 and 96. that's probably jumped up now to about 29 and 80-some -- i'm sorry, 96 rbi's. so he has a legitimate chance to drive in 100 which he did in his first full season back in 06. >> bob: remember, we didn't have niejner the first half. so we have more of a table setter. >> bob: should have been on base. >> rob: but wasn't. and i just see things changing around jim riggleman, is a no nonsense guy. he laid down the law last night. >> bob: not happy about a lackluster performance to say the least. adam dunn base hit.
