laser speed. perdomo knows it, throws it right into the ground, right by adrian gonzalez. he can't save it. these guys are taking some 7-0 hacks. you have to watch yourself, because sometimes pitchers don't like the way you swing. you don't want to get hit by this guy. >> bob: morgan is hitting .368 now as a national. guzman fouls that one. games in arizona and colorado are now over. diamondbacks beat the pirates 7- 0. that enhances their wild card run. dodgers in a 1-1 game top of the fourth with the marlins. that and this one the only game still going on in major league baseball. guzman strikes out. lately right-handers have been getting him out on two strike

that's on the meat of the bat that's way out of here. he has pulled it down. >> bob: adam dunn is 12 for his last 26. this might be the best mini streak we've seen him on this year. after those at-bats he's batting .462 during that little streak and his batting average up to .276. >> rob: i was watching him play batting practice. he wasn't having a good batting practice, he threw his bat a few times. pat was getting on him. in his last round he was launching some balls upper deck way out of here, so it just takes a little bit of being steamed to get you right. >> bob: i think he'll be the first hitter to hit one to the upper concourse to the right of

the scoreboard. one of these days he'll pull one and he'll hit one that will probably hit the nats fans 10 sign on one hop. he will visit parts of this ballpark no one else will. there it is. >> rob: there's the 10th man. come on, get loud. oh, not that many left. but they could still make it loud. >> bob: they were pretty loud for the small group they are when he they'd grand slam two innings ago. the one thing that we've noticed over the years about fans who stay, after a long rain delay, they are really vocal and really into the game once it gets restarted and many of them are sitting in seats they could only dream about.

fifth. salazar's had an interesting journey through baseball. really didn't play in the major leagues between 2002 and 2008. he was totally out of the game for a couple of years. and he was 13 for 31 with the orioles this year before they picked him up for right-hander clay meredith july 19. salazar 30 years of age from venezuela. some time back in 02 with the tigers. up and in. clippard blows him away. tyler clippard now has four strikeouts. >> rob: a little bit of that in milwaukee, the high cheese. yeah, you don't want to try to swing at those pitches that are letter high, but they look so

good coming in. tough to get the bat speed up that fast that high. >> bob: top of the order now, tony gwynn, jr. 0 for 2. >> rob: i just like clippard because he comes right at you and gets ahead. then you don't know if it's the slow curveball or the change- up. everything works off the fastball and i think a lot of young guys, they just start thinking, well, i've got to try to trick them, get ahead with the off-speed curveball. just throw a strike. a lot of times the hitters will give you one, you'll foul it off. sometimes you have to say, okay, he'll foul this off, then i'm going to do such and such. >> bob: interesting line on luis perdomo. three innings, five runs, four

hits, three walks, count 'em, seven strikeouts. gave up a home run and he committed an error. right now tony gwynn's not catching up with clippard's fastball. everth cabrera 2 for 2 tonight. he's been on base four times in this series. >> rob: see that piece over the finger area on the glove. a loft pitchers years ago went to that, right there, nice job, guys. >> bob: drops in the breaking ball. strikeout number five. >> rob: pitchers were finding they'd tip the pitches. right there you see him getting the slider curveball grip there on the side of the ball. here he comes with that over the hand action.

you still can't catch charlie hustle. >> bob: it's hard to imagine. a pop-up left side. >> rob: then today two different hall of famers, ozzie smith and hank aaron both said, listen, you're holding out some really good players from the hall of fail, just put an asterisk next to their name, say they played in the steroid era and put them in the hall of fame. >> bob: who would that be? >> rob: anybody who is associated with them, palmeiro, sosa, maguire. >> bob: look at this kid play center field. nyjer morgan runs some really nice routes. that was a great jump and it made the play not even need a dive at the end.

 >> david wrote a book called have heart, he talks about how rick helped him as a coach at florida and how he still helps him during the off-season even today and he's really contributed to his big league career. we'll have more on the two brothers tomorrow on "nats xtra." this is definitely a can't miss. what an incredible family, a lot of drive and perseverance for both these young guys. >> bob: it's a family that's had a lot of sickness, a lot of health issues from the parents on down, and david's a terrific kid. we thought he might be back today from the pulled cam

string but he's still on the d.l., i asked david eckstein yesterday if he ever calls his brother for hitting advice when things don't go well. >> rob: i was there in st. louis when david eckstein was given the world series mvp, he's one of my favorite players. >> bob: not many shortstops have done that. >> rob: not many guys about 5'6", the biggest heart you could ever imagine. that kid hustles all over the field. and pretty good praise, too. i don't care what people said about barry bonds, he said david eckstein's my favorite player to watch. >> bob: mike he can strom comes in. i remember when he came to the cardinals. the fans didn't know anything about him, about one month into that season they were in love with the kid. it's a great baseball family.

>> rob: if you can't get motivated with a player like david eckstein, he's all out all the time, you can't be motivated. that's what i think rick eckstein, i love rick, he gets into this stuff, he loves his hitters, he loves hitting and figuring out pitching and how can i get our hitters to get more out of themselves. it's all you can ask out of a coach. other than him strapping it on and going out there and hitting for them. i'm watching pat taking infield with the every day players. i mean our coaches love the guys, they want them to succeed. there's patty. he and i were teammates. he charged me. came after me on the mound when i was with the white sox and he was with the brewers. he was thinking that pitch was a little close. i said, listen, i was told to throw it up and in on you, you didn't like it and you came and told me about it.

gainesville, florida, at the u of f. became a two time all sec player and all american. but he was on the honor role in the sec three years in a row. >> rob: i meant to say that, even though i wasn't a good student, every year at my old high school i funded the scholar athletes scholarship fund because i felt i owed that to the best student that i was not and i regretted that. tell my high school coach, pick out the guys that have the highest gpa and worst fastball and give them help. >> bob: he's going rifle one right to the wall on two hops. josh is 1 for 3 tonight. and from willingham, that will be his 32nd extra-base hit of the year on double number 19. we don't see josh hit the ball

the other way a lot. but lately he's been doing some of this. >> rob: as young hitters, we're taught to hit it where it's pitched. right there he took a nice patient approach an went the other way. there's a lot of teams drooling on josh willingham right now. they would love to have that bat for the stretch drive. such a good player. such a good team guy. he's gone through an awful lot this year. >> bob: he and i were talking about mike duff on wired wednesday. including a couple of times when we put his audio on live. he said to me the next day, i'm sure glad i didn't pop up with the bases loaded when you had

with tyler clippard here? >> rob: yes, they are. >> bob: and the nats fans are applauding. they like the way the pitchers are going after things tonight. the two out bases empty walk by j.d. martin back in the second inning, that led to a five run explosion. >> rob: and jim riggleman's also saying i don't maybe want to burn willie harris right here with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, he may get another chance to use him later on in the game if need be, if it became a tight game. that's what managers and coaches do. always thinking.

work for tierl clippard. this is the kind of outing you're hoping for when you have a big lead and the weather gets in the way. you don't want to be bring inning a pitcher every inning or two. three, four and five for the padres here. how about that. first pitch off-speed, strike one. he's mixed the speeds really well against gonzalez. and for that matter, kouzmanoff. >> rob: he's done a great job coming out of the bullpen since he was brought up here. >> rob: boy, i would like to see him possibly get a start here soon. if you have command of three pitches and you can locate them at will anytime in the count, you can start at this level. those guys that are in the bullpen usually just have command of one and possibly two pitches. there you see him blowing away a very good hitter in adrian gonzalez, one of the best in the big leagues.

confused by the change-up. they're saying, what was that? well, here's the fastball grip. got ahead on the 78-mile an hour fastball. the two fastballs, or change- ups, then two fastballs after that. but they look 95 because of the mile an hour differential and it's the same arm speed. it's what i call the equalizer, because there's no way they can be looking for your change-up. they're looking a the 91-mile an hour fastball. if you slow up your arm to try to slow the ball down, that's what the hitters pick up on. >> bob: clippard is working on quite a week here. trying to complete four scoreless innings at least here tonight. the padres only have an infield hit and a walk against him.

we have nationals fans all over the country. i just got an email from the pacific northwest from some former washingtonians who live out there. and said they enjoyed coming home at 8:30 on a saturday night an got to see the nationals play. on the satellite. our old friends erica and matt skelton out there who just got married. our best to them and a 7-0 nats lead here. chase headley, ground ball and a fly out. so rob dibble, you've spent one day and nine hours of your life this year with me sitting through rain delays. >> rob: i wasn't always with you. i visit the concession stand. >> bob: it's why we're still
