12:00 am
almost midnight here. tyler clippard has established a new nats record, seven strikeouts by a reliever. >> rob: when you get ahead of people, you throw strikes, you throw hard, he's got a great change-up, a great curveball. like i said before, i think that he could go through the order two, three times with that stuff. he's got three pitches he throws for strikes at will when he's behind in the count and i think that's some excellent stuff, after a long rain delay by tyler clippard. >> bob: nyjer morgan 3 for 3 tonight. there's his box score. cristian guzman, zimmerman, the dunn, the top of the order has done a really nice job tonight. the previous nats record for strikeouts by a reliever chris schroeder three years ago september of 06. chris is now in the oakland organization. chris and -- cristian guzman is next. >> rob: i really liked him in the champ, by the way. oh, that was rickey schroeder. i'm sorry.
12:01 am
>> bob: look at guzman -- pardon me, morgan flip one to left field. that looked like a cristian guzman swing. nyjer morgan is hitting over .370 since coming to this ball club. >> rob: i think the discussion last night really pumped them up for tonight. they're running around the bases, running around on defense, giving a great effort tonight and i think they're a lot more aggressive and it's shown in these at-bats. nyjer morgan right now, 7-0 in the sixth. maybe a little bit too early to stop running. may steal second. right here he might go with no outs, station to station. cristian guzman, good contact man. >> bob: i think 7-0 is a little
12:02 am
beyond the point where you're going to be running on somebody. >> rob: 7-0 in the sixth inning, with our bullpen? >> bob: we've seen a couple of ballgames this week where teams have come from nine or 10 runs back. >> bob: there's a game tonight, 9-1 they came back and tied it. >> bob: guzman base hit. this is crazy. the top two hitters in the line- up tonight are six out of eight. then zimmerman has a two run homer and dunn a grand slam and two hits. >> rob: good contact man. power pitchers hate contact men. you want free swingers up there so you can get ahead and throw breaking balls. >> bob: you also want that hitter rolling that thing over to the second baseman. >> rob: that's true, but contact guys don't allow you to get deep in the count.
12:03 am
they slap your fastball into play. did not like them. >> bob: there's ryan. the only out he made was caught at the base of the scoreboard in right center. he's had some good at-bats. zimmerman in this series is 3 for 6 with two homers, 3 rbi's and he's scored three runs, plus a walk. pretty good pitch by mike ekstrom who used to be at oregon state university. here are the third basemen who are getting it done from the rbi standpoint. kevin kouzmanoff is on that list. >> rob: longoria showing people that it was no fluke.
12:04 am
>> bob: i think he's one of the underrated players in the league without a doubt. >> rob: when the dodgers got casey blake last year, a hard working just tough guy at third base. >> bob: clubhouse guy, too. >> rob: he was a great acquisition. he didn't get a lot of credit for. everybody said, oh, manny ramirez. casey blake was outstanding, too. >> bob: dodgers still playing. marlins lead them 3-1 in the sixth inning. out at chavez ravine. the dodgers have an 8.5 game lead over colorado in the west. padres are 23.5 back. he spoiled a pretty good slider. >> rob: that's when you know he's seeing the ball well.
12:05 am
>> bob: kensing is like a kid in the backyard using the pitch factors. he's loose. >> bob: that is nasty. good take on a good pitch. >> rob: i actually practiced with a version of that, not the pitch back, but it had a net that hung in the back. but i made a big square like the batter's box. threw through the holes and stuff based on the pitch back. when i started throwing harder. >> bob: zimmerman hits this ball well to right field, right off the wall. nyjer morgan scores, guzman checks in at third and ryan zimmerman has a 3 rbi night.
12:06 am
>> rob: we've got action. >> bob: zimmerman's had four really good at-bats tonight. >> rob: very nice job. a very good pitcher's pitch. but when you're going good and you're hot with the bat, everything looks like a beach ball to you. >> bob: 60 rbi's now for ryan. here's adam dunn. first base open but it's an 8-0 game. he was thinking first pitch hack. well, this is fun. the nats haven't enjoyed much of anything like this since houston. >> rob: 20-13. >> bob: the astros gave up 10
12:07 am
to the mets tonight at home. so adam dunn, 25 home runs this year. why not have another look. for those of you who might have been on the metro. >> rob: listen to the sound. it's a different sound when a guy crushes it. >> bob: called strike. that was good base running a moment ago by the way by nyjer morgan. he had to hold up on that ball for a while. he got around to score, and guzman into third ahead of ryan. expanding his zone.
12:08 am
guzman tagging. gwynn throwing home, cut off. 9-0. and it's a five rbi night for adam dunn. and, rob, you and i have talked about this, there are times when we've wanted to see adam reach out and take a pitch like that rather than just taking a walk and he did it for an rbi. >> rob: i know that within the organization they wanted him to swing instead of go for the on- base percentage, the walk, if you will, because they're giving you the open base and he's such a good hitter. strong, can flick his wrist and put the ball out far enough to get an rbi fly ball. >> bob: tonight dunn makes it
12:09 am
to 70. nick johnson 0 for 2 with a pair of strikeouts around a walk. nick sitting on 40 rbi's. the nats have pounded out nine runs on 11 hits. 8 rbi's by the three and four hitters. >> rob: joe thatcher getting loose. >> bob: and nick will take a strike on 3-0. >> rob: you're getting your only lefty up when you had two lefties in a row right there.
12:10 am
a little late. >> bob: this might be a matter of lab work the rest of the night for the pitching staff. maybe he wants it see if his lefty can get any right-handers out. by the way, happy sunday morning to you, rob. >> rob: top of the morning to you, too, bobby. >> bob: good baseball man right there, bud black. as rob said, he passed up some opportunities to go elsewhere. bud black after seven years with a pitching coach with mike scioscia, slid right in to san diego. nick johnson is gone for the
12:11 am
third time tonight. >> rob: they've done a great job, top of the order, bob, one through four, 10 for 14, two homers, nine runs scored. driven in, excuse me. >> bob: there's an interesting fact about bud black that i think is worthy of mention. he's one of only three men in baseball history to win 100 games as a pitcher, then be a major league manager. as you and i talked about last night. not many pitchers end up in that job and he's a san diego state guy originally. josh willingham's going to get an rbi and a bouncer up the middle. zimmerman home to score. the nats are into double figures, 10-0 and josh willingham has his 30th rbi. the symmetry of this game is a little strange. zimmerman reaches 60, dunn reaches 70 and willingham
12:12 am
reaches 30. >> rob: that's going to do it for this young man. they're going to have a double switch. >> bob: and will venable will go to left field and replace chase headley. so the nats just keep on keeping on with the bats here. tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "i'm rethinking everything... tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 including who i trust to look after my money." tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "the dust might be settling... tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 that's great, but i'm not." tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "i guess i'm just done with doing nothing, you know?" tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 "oh, i'm not thinking about moving my money.
12:13 am
tdd#: 1-800-345-2550 i am moving it."
12:14 am
 >> bob: how about those mobiles of a baseball theme. and here at nationals park on a saturday night, that's become sunday morning, washington 10, san diego nothing. and still only two outs in the sixth inning. ronnie belliard coming up. will venable is in left field batting ninth and the new pitcher is left-hander. >> rob: am i old if i played with will venable's dad max. >> bob: i remember him. yeah, you are. this kid is 27. >> rob: the kids of my teammates are now playing in the big leagues. he's kind of funky. comes down, drops that knee,
12:15 am
comes around towards first base. i don't think lefties probably like mr. thatcher a whole lot. and he's the only lefty in the pen. they have eight pitchers. seven righties coming at you all day. >> bob: he knows he needs help, he needs that extra arm. he needs that extra arm fairly often. so five starters, and eight relievers. leaving only 12 position players.
12:16 am
>> bob: ronnie belliard 0 for 2 with a walk tonight. breaking ball nasty, locks him up, inning over. the nats pick up three more rbi's by zimmerman, dunn and willingham. since 1873, coors banquet has been brewed in one place... and one place only: golden, colorado. it's followed one tradition: use the best high-country barley... and only rocky mountain water. and it's been brewed under one motto: never compromise. now maybe this means we're a little set in our ways. but we know a few guys who will drink to that.
12:17 am
coors. the banquet beer. >> bob: nats are making some changes in a 10-0 game as we go to the top of the 7th inning.
12:18 am
tyler clippard, rob dibble, his performance of the year, four scoreless innings. >> rob: a lot of great change- ups, curveballs, fastballs tonight, was able to mix them up, change the sequences, get some very good pitchers out. excuse americas hitters like gonzalez and kouzmanoff. >> bob: austin kearns to play right field. and on the other side of nyjer morgan, willie harris is in left. a nice chance for jim riggleman to get some at-bats and defensive work, especially for kearns and hernandez who have mainly been pinch-hitting lately. here is logan kensing. we'll get all those guys set for you as far as where they are in the line-up shortly. >> rob: the guys in the bullpen
12:19 am
really don't have roles, set in stone. but the more they go out there and perform, and do a great job, they'll define their own roles. right now tyler clippard defining his own role asagoe to guy when you need him early in a game, middle of the game, late in a game. if he throws strikes and changes speeds like that, he's going to be one of the mainstays of this bullpen the rest of the season. >> bob: isn't it nice to have one of those guys who is 24 years old. >> rob: and this guy right here, the stuff that he possesses, if he can throw strikes, put some people away, he will step up that ladder in jim riggleman's mind. >> bob: anderson hernandez is
12:20 am
batting cleanup for the first time in his career. and kensing overpowering drew macias who fouls one off to the left side. >> rob: i bet when he was a young man he hit cleanup on some of his teams. he's a really good hitter. >> bob: so hernandez bats fourth, pitcher seventh, kearns ninth. >> rob: you want to throw strikes. you don't want to mess around. >> bob: away with a fastball. logan kensing, 27 years of age. 48 ballgames with florida last year. 37 in 06.
12:21 am
that one tails outside. he walks the lead-off man and the padres have their first base runner since the third inning. and that was a walk. family fun pack is back and you can bring the whole gang out to the ballpark. right field upper terrace, $14 a seat. lower left or right field reserved, $25. two tickets minimum purchase, pregame autographs on signature sundays. next sunday the nats will be home will be today. 1:35. i'm sure john lannan has been probably sent home to get his rest. john, if you're watching, go to bet.
12:22 am
>> bob: john has been so good lately. stammen, zimmerman, bard, dunn. >> rob: they're not so young anymore. >> bob: i know, but when it's 10-0 you feel like a kid. >> rob: when it's 10-0, you get taken out of the game, you get breather for a change. i think adam dunn's quite pleased right now. there's garrett mock. >> bob: rob, like a position player, like adam dunn gets taken out of this game, would a guy like that be sent home or would position players just stay and stay? >> rob: no, they just stay. is that catchable? yeah, it is with nyjer morgan out there. >> rob: nobody gets sent home. >> bob: other than pitchers? >> rob: other than pitchers, which i've never figured that out anyway. you're not going to go home and go to sleep. you're going to watch the rest of the game. but players, their wives don't
12:23 am
want them home. they stay there at the ballpark. >> bob: here is jose lobaton. the pitcher's spot was to be next, until they made the double switch with will venable. hernandez, guzman, he made an extra skip to get out of the way of the runner. and still had time. announcer: what's your cialis moment? when she gives me that look. when at last we're alone. when we both decide. announcer: today, guys with erectile dysfunction can be ready with another dosing option from cialis. cialis for daily use is a clinically proven low-dose tablet you take every day, so you can be ready anytime the moment is right. so relax and take your time. tell your doctor about your medical condition and all medications and ask if you're healthy enough for sexual activity. don't take cialis if you take nitrates for

12:25 am
the nats lead 10-5097th inning stretch. our next game is today at 1:30. young mr. lannan a. complete game against the mets, a shut- out on tuesday. didn't walk anybody. johnny and ray will be ready for you at 1:00 with "nats xtra" first pitch, 1:35. looks like the nats will be going for a series win. there's kyle blanks who comes into play -- in to play first base. they'll get adrian gonzalez off the field after his 0 for 2 with a walk tonight. and that guy would be a good target, mr. blanks. 6'6", 280. you mean after all of that, all
12:26 am
of that warm-up, logan kensing is only going to pitch one inning? >> bob: i think he threw a thousand pitches in the bullpen. logan, you got to be tired. come on. you got to stop off. >> bob: he's back in the big leagues, that's all he cares about. >> rob: my roommate used to do that. when you've got an arm like that, you can throw and throw. >> bob: wil nieves 0 for 3 with three strikeouts. i think the kensing situation is an interesting one where your ball club pretty much designates you for assignment. i don't know what the percentage is, but i would think in three out of four cases that player does not end up staying with that organization. a lot of guys that they've been around for a while don't want to go to triple-a and they'll
12:27 am
become a free agent. but here's kensing, he stayed with the washington organization, he got himself right with the help of steve mccaddie and others at syracuse and here he is. >> rob: i think mike rizzo had a lot to do with that. we want you to go down there and work hard and you'll be right back up here, and he did. the bottom line is do you want to pitch up here or no. sometimes you know you need some work and i'm sure that steve and mike and even at the time manny acta had a lot to do with him staying in the organization. and talking him out of declaring for free agency. and he went down there, did the work, did his due diligence, got his head right and came right back up here. now he's got a shot to really make some noise up here for the nationals. >> bob: here's austin kearns.
12:28 am
austin, needs to get a base hit here, get over .200. he's had a few knocks lately. by the way, nyjer morgan, look at the pants. he doesn't roll them up. there's nothing to roll up. he has them specially cut. >> rob: wide receivers, they don't even use the knee pads anymore. >> bob: i wonder how those guys play with the owe in the nfl with their knees seemingly exposed. >> rob: it's called guts. they're tough. >> bob: showing off their legs. and kearns a two hopper to luis rodriguez, two outs. those pants have busy tonight. >> rob: he started off the night, with the nationals. got -- a fielder's choice.
12:29 am
that triple, single, infield single that was thrown away. he ends up on second base. then last time up, the little flare into left field. >> bob: he's having a night. hitting .377. we don't know how things will play out, but right now it appears to be the pickup of the year for mike rizzo. and sean burnett on top of that. he's energized this team. and quite frankly, the ball club needed a jolt and so did we. we enjoyed dealing with him on a daily basis. we like him even more because he's one of those guys from our standpoint who gets it. always willing to chat and talk baseball. he remembers you, knows your name. and he's an interesting guy to have around the ball club.
12:30 am
he stays alive on a 1-2 breaking ball. i think we're going to beat the dodgers and the marlins to the finish line tonight. marlins lead at los angeles 3- 1. everything else over. morgan gone for the first time tonight. and a 1-2-3 seventh for the prime minister thatcher. i've never been all that great with my money. probably because i've never had much. but now that i'm making more, it's time to be a little smarter about how i manage it.. with the calendar, i can schedule all my payments. and when funds are low, danger days help me stay out of the red. i can also transfer money with just a click and a drag. so maybe i'm better with money than i thought. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high-definition, online view of your money.

 >> bob: top of the 8th inning here at nationals park. on a night like this, you'd like to have mlb.com 2009. you can follow the nats. visit nationals.com on your iphone or ipod touch to purchase. joe beimel, the nats fourth pitcher of the night. tyler clippard is going to get his second career win as a nat. he's the pitcher of record. and tim stauffer who gave up two in the first the pitcher of record for san diego. but here's joe beimel to face will venable, the 26-year-old outfielder who went to princeton, played baseball,
12:33 am
basketball there. the only other player that's been all conference at an ivy league school is another padre, chris young. you played with his dad max. >> rob: yes, i did. max venable. >> bob: he's a minor league coach in the padre organization right now. clippard one walk in four innings. kensing a walk last inning, but he erased that runner with a double play ball.
12:34 am
 >> bob: breaking ball, strikes him out. a big breaker from joe beimel. the nationals have struck out 8 tonight. >> rob: on the great breaking ball, 75, and a lot of air in between that ball and the bat. >> bob: that's one of those breaking balls i think about, and i talk to hitters that say, yeah, it's not coming in that hard, but it's spinning really
12:35 am
fast. top of the order. tony gwynn, jr. 0 for 3 tonight. tough play for nick. he had to charge it. if you laid back, gwynn's probably going to beat it out. i wouldn't be surprised to see that called a hit. had a lot of overspin on it. look how high that ball came out. >> bob: there's a clean hit. off the bat of cabrera. that kid has swung the bat
12:36 am
pretty well tonight and in the series. so first and second for the padres, one out here in the 8th. that was a base hit for gwynn. padres, their fourth and fifth hits of the night here. and that big young man kyle blanks coming in here replacing gonzalez. kyle blanks, 6'6", 285. played right field last night. and went 0 for 3, three strikeouts and a walk. he's a former 42nd round draft pick of the padres back in 04.
12:37 am
off speed pitch. zimmerman might be a double play. no throw and that's a wise decision. blanks for a big guy got down the line quickly. ryan got the force play. thought about two. >> rob: hard shot down the line. zim saves a double, maybe more. takes the force. >> bob: big man moving. eating up a lot of real estate on every stride there. here's kevin kouzmanoff who is 0 for 3 tonight. and 2 for 8 with an rbi in the series. 78 on that one tailing down and away from the right-handed
12:38 am
batter. kouzmanoff has found a home in san diego. 31 doubles. he racks that one into left field. coming around is cabrera. willie harris throws it home. the shut-out's gone. it's 10-1. and kouzmanoff has his 52nd rbi. i thought for a while the nats might have two shut-outs in
12:39 am
five days. after not having any at home all year. the other one on the road. >> rob: toughest part about being a reliever sometimes, games like tonight. you've been sitting around all night now, 20 till 1:00, you have to stay ready. the home up has shifted a little bit. you need to try to keep it on your side of the field. this game's not over yet. >> bob: this is the other catcher, eliezer alfonzo, who started last night and had a double in four trips. he's batting for the pitcher thatcher.
12:40 am
great movement on that one by beimel. so bud black has used his four bench players. the nats have used everybody but alberto gonzalez and josh bard. a little tapper right back to beimel. padres get a run on three singles in the 8th. our 737s fly to over 65 cities across the country every day. pa announcer: final boarding call... all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. grab your bag . it's on™west so our low fares stay low.

 >> bob: on to the bottom of the 8th inning and a game summary. ryan zimmerman had a great night for the nats. homer, walk, double, three rbi's, three runs. adam dunn, the big grand slam and a five rbi night. nyjer morgan four out of five with two runs scored. busy night for the top of the order, not to be forgotten in between them, cristian guzman two hits and three runs scored. edward mujica for the padres. he's 25 years of age, 6'2".
12:43 am
guzman's now having a three-hit night. it will be his 34th multihit game of the year. he did that last time up with the base hit to left. johnny and ray have a lot it talk about and they've been waiting for "nats xtra post- game" straight ahead. great night for offense. tyler clippard, four scoreless innings. >> rob: that was a good read by cristian guzman watching this guy warm up. >> rob: so if you're a lead-off man, pay attention from the on deck circle. >> rob: absolutely. you know everybody's watching you during the warm-up, trying
12:44 am
to time you. >> bob: so let's say you're rob dibble fastball slider. >> rob: i had a junky, no seam, it's called a dry spitter. you're not holding a seam on the baseball. it's a change-up. i also had a forkball, never threw it in a game, but i'd throw it in warmups so they could see it and go, wow, i've never seen him throw that in a game. maybe he's working on that. >> bob: i thought dibble was a two-pitch pitcher. >> rob: until they saw the slider. >> bob: that's interesting. deceiving the on-deck hitter while warming up. >> rob: you could also ask a lot of guys that saw me in the first couple of years launch my final warm-up to the back stop. >> bob: did you ever launch one? >> rob: all the time. i would tell joe oliver so he
12:45 am
wouldn't hurt his shoulder. >> bob: maybe give the umpire the cue on that. they'd stand over to the side. but norm charlton did the same thing. you just wanted everybody on the bench to think, oh, my god, that guy's a nut. i don't want to face him. to say you were nyjer, you were 4 for 4, that fifth at-bat you're facing me in a blowout, you didn't want a lot of me. you're like, you know what, we'll let this guy go and strike me out. tap out to the shortstop. it's all psychological, bob, at this level. i want just a pretty face out there. >> bob: boy, that ruins my image. i thought that's all you were. look at ryan zimmerman, three hit night on base four times.
12:46 am
and two of his hits have gone the opposite field and, remember, the base hit he got over there last night. we'll have our first at-bat tonight for anderson hernandez. how about that. if it was a close game, you'd have your cleanup hitter bunting here. >> rob: how many times do you think adam dunn has been replaced by a middle infielder in the line-up? >> bob: i wouldn't ask him. >> rob: he's having a great time over there. he doesn't get to just be a little kid over on the bench. >> bob: guzman coming around, he was going to hold him, then he sent him. then guzman stopped on his own. >> rob: it's a little late to be rubbing it in and i think guzman even thought about it coming around third, he didn't
12:47 am
want to score. >> bob: we understand what's going on there. >> rob: there's some baseball etiquette in play right now and you don't want to rub this in the padres face. >> bob: did you see what guzman just did though. he looked over to anderson hernandez and tapped on his heart and say, sorry, i cost you an rbi here. but anderson will be happy with the hit. he hasn't had many lately and that will be good for him. >> rob: he may save someone some pain tomorrow if they wanted to pay us back for rubbing it in their face. you don't want one of your players, especially anderson hernandez maybe getting hit tomorrow, something that guzman did tonight. remember, we talked about that. may wait two months oh get somebody back, and it could happen the other -- what happened the other night in that brewer game. jeff carston had hit braun with
12:48 am
a pitch two months later, they hit carston. >> rob: a no contact night for nick until that little squirter into right field. it's 12-1. for nick johnson after three strikeouts and a walk, rbi's 41 and 42. >> rob: when the nationals lay one on you, they can lay it on you hard. 16 hits, 12 runs after this, two rbi single by nick johnson gets jammed. >> bob: ever since elton john's been in this ballpark, saturday night's been all right. a little bouncer by willie harris.
12:49 am
another run will score. they'll get the lead run on a 3- 6 force play. hernandez home and it's 13-1. now the pitcher's spot's due up so alberto gonzalez will be the hitter. half of a day for now we'll be right back with you for an afternoon game on sunday. john lannan, chad gaudin. i wouldn't call him a heckler but it's a pseudo coach down there. come on, alberto. be aggressive. so josh bard, the only
12:50 am
remaining position player tonight. the nats are going to bring mike macdougal in to pitch the ninth inning anyway. four hits in this inning. 16 in the game. saturday night two weeks ago the nats had 13 hits in houston. mike is ready. and it will be a nonsave situation. >> rob: he does need to stay sharp though. only problem is in houston, the next day the nats were shut out. i don't think that's going happen tomorrow. gonzalez will get around late and foul one.
12:51 am
the home stand record will be even at 3 and 3 with a win tonight. at least since the cubs left town. 3-3 weak basically. i guess i was making like a relief pitcher and forgetting about the four game sweep. >> rob: that didn't happen. gonzalez hanging tough and bouncing to short. and the padres will go around 6- 4-3 and turn it. ú ♪ cold refreshment is an unstoppable force.
