tomorrow night 7:00 and the day game 12:30 on thursday. -- 12 a chopper. bloomquist had to play it off the side of the mound. two down. betancourt, rather. did play. that ball took a hop on betancourt. it came off the third base side there. so, two outs, matt wieters. george sherrill and the bullpen. the orioles could get a lead here he'd be in. >> buck: he might come in to pitch the ninth no matter what given the fact that you've got the power-hitting mike jacobs, the left-hander, then the switch hitter brayan pena and alex gordon. two out of the three scheduled batters are left-handed and two of them have power. >> gary: skips all the what you through. wieters, two singles. rbi's last time up gave the orioles the brief lead up 3-2 before bloomquist delivered the home run and tied this ballgame
9:26 pm
up again. again tonight, the orioles, they have left eight on base. four in scoring position. >> gary: 13 rbi's in a .263 batting average for the orioles catcher. the 2-0 delivery to him. he takes that to right field, hit it hard. that's going to take a hop just shy of the wall. it will be a long single. back to first, wieters is back. wieters feels like this is his home ballpark. three hits for wieters. >> buck: yeah, matt didn't get this in the air high enough because it he hit it high enough to go out of the ballpark. it has top spin and bounces off the warning track.
9:27 pm
teahen plays it very well. wieters had his eye on the right fielder and decides he better shut her down and takes the single. >> gary: wieters, his second three-hit ballgame. comes with with two down. orioles ninth hit of the game. izturis has singed, -- singled, 1-3. wean three down, dpoord gordon is playing on the grats grass at third base. the delivery taken up high. count goes to 2-0. izturis has done everything. he doesn't get a lost look at
9:28 pm
because of all the young players. he has really done a job for the orioles both at the plate and in the field. 2-0 delivery. he's done everything asked defensively at shortstop and i think a little bit more than expected at the plate. >> buck: yeah, you know what? we dent talk about the shortstop much because it hasn't been an issue. he made all the plays. after last year and the revolving door at shortstop, cesar izturis has been a breath of consistency you really enjoy. >> gary: two ball, one strike count. wieters off first. 3-1. he just wants to get on here to move that runner up to second base. >> buck: turn the lineup over. with the lineup tonight, you have brian roberts in there, adam jones and aubrey huff a little bit of a shuffle. just randy wolf to -- love to get the top of the order up here to hit in the eighth inning. 3-1 delivery on the way. he tried to cokes ball four
9:29 pm
oust that, but marty foster would have none of it. >> buck: take a look at pitch counts with the 3-1 fastball. plenty at the plate. cesar izturis was trying to talk the umpire into ball four. >> gary: only six walks for izturis and only 16 strikeouts. 3-2. wieters is running. izturis is hitting. center field. that's going to be a base hit. wieters on his way to third. so, izturis a two-hit ballgame. first and third, two down in the eighth. >> buck: dave trembley has always talked about the number nine hitter getting tough hits to turn the lineup over. izturis has done it consistent this year. wieters running on the pitch. ball is in front of bloomquist bli. he goes over to third base and orioles are threatening to take
9:30 pm
the lead. >> gary, so brian roberts will take the chance. brian has faced colon before. he's 1-3 against him. one of only three orioles has had an at-bat against this kansas city leave. they're setting the defense with two down. roberts doubled, singled, 2-4. colon, fastball is in there for a strike. the orioles with a clans to get that lead and go to the ninth inning. they can get a base hit here. wieters and izturis the base runners. 0--- 0-1 delivery to roberts. now 1-1. >> buck: now roberts has the count where he can look for a fastball. a ball and a strike, very tentative delivery on that last
9:31 pm
breaking pitch. the split-finger fastball and colon didn't throw it near the strike zone so roberts can eliminate that before he gets to two strikes. >> gary: roberts .300 with runners in scoring position. the 1-1 delivery. 2-1. >> buck: again, every ball allows brian roberts to be more selective and sit on the fastball. >> gary: dave trembley hoping orioles can find one right here and get wieters in at least wieters with the go ahead. izturis at first. and the 2-1 delivery. roberts will foul it away. 2-2. >> buck: looking for the fastball, but it was a good fastball in the upper 90s. 97 from colon and roberts even though he was looking for it
9:32 pm
was a bit late. know you don't have the luxury to do anything but protect the zone. >> gary: runners on first and third. here is the 2-2 delivery and roberts again will fight that one away. wow. how about that. >> buck: back-to-back efforts. he was perfect mark buehrle was his last time out against tampa bay. >> gary: 14 perfect innings thrown. and against a team of some substance in the twins. two ball, two strike count. two down. delivery. roberts takes it and he's gone. colon gets the called third strike. orioles, no runs, two hits, no errors. two are left on base. we go to the ninth inning at

 >> gary: orioles baseball o masn is brought to you by southwest airlines. book your next trip at southwest.com. george sherrill coming out of the bullpen with a chance to be a winner in the ballgame as number one he needs the work and number two we're going to the ninth inning of a 3-3 ballgame. you bring the closer on and
9:35 pm
hope all he needs is three outs for a w. >> buck: a little bit of a rough month for george sherrill this month. he saved 3-4 opportunities. e.r.a. over 4.00. they've hit almost .300 against sheryl, but he's had anotheroutstanding season. he last pitched on saturday at fenway park. sherrill came in and worked a 1- 2-3 ninth inning. >> gary: george has not had a save since the first of the month. on the 12th, he got one against toronto against boston. he had -- he had an 1 1/3 worked in that last outing against boston. now try to -- trying hold to him down here. miguel olivo will be the pinch- hitter coming on for jacobs in the d. h. role. jacobs had an 0-3. bloomquist the home run in the eighth inning tying the ballgame up after the orioles had taken the lead in the sixth on an rbi
9:36 pm
single by wieters. sherrill's delivery. olivo will take it for a strike. olivo has done a lot of catching this year take the dh role for a couple of games then out of the lineup tonight. going for the long ball and a good count. >> buck: he's got some pop. he's trying to give this royals team the lead with one swing of the bat. he's hit 13 home runs off him. >> gary: he's had a home run off sherrill. takes a quarter cut and fouls it off with two strikes. >> buck: that was a kind description. quarter cut. just not full cut. there was a quarter c.u.p. cut. >> gary: it wasn't anemergency swing. >> buck: no, just a quarter.
9:37 pm
>> gary: 0-2 count, olivo. one-run ballgames this year, orioles have a .500 mark of 11- 11 while kansas city has gone 8- 15. that's a sign of the bullpen problems that -- problems that they would have lost that many games and won only eight in one- run contests. 0-2 count. olivo to short. izturis. pena and gordon due up in the top of the ninth inning with jamey wright and the closer joakim soria warming up.
9:38 pm
catcher had a single. he flied out and grounded out. batting at .286 on the year. sherrill bouncing that one. sherrill working out of that stretch. it's got to be tough for the hitters to pickup the ball because especially right- handers, he's turned almost towards second base. you don't really see the baseball till he let's it fly. >> buck: that's a move he made in may when he was getting hit hard. you can see how he hides the ball from the hitter. he can't find the release point. it was by design. he was getting hit hard early in the season. he felt like the hitters were seeing the ball for a long time picking it up early. so, he closed up his setup and turned his back to the hitter. you can't see the glove. certainly, if you can't see the glove, you're not going to pickup the baseball until late. that's when he became really consistent and much more effective.
9:39 pm
>> gary: 2-0 delivery to pena. that's a strike on the inside corner. pena not agreeing with that. a two ball, one strike count. he defected while in venezuela in 2000 playing for the cuban national team. picked up by atlanta. played in the atlanta organization all the way through last year. 2-1 delivery to him. it will be fouled away. and it is a two ball, two strike count. i still want to own the franchise that opens up in had a vaughnia, cuba. -- havana, cuba. it will happen. maybe not in my lifetime. there will be a baseball team there someday. >> buck: i know who has -- >> gary: i no who that is, right. >> buck: i want to be his president. >> gary: two -- he will be the president. >> gary: two ball, two strike count. >> buck: yeah, it will come, too. they're going to open up one of these days and change the government, change the
9:40 pm
philosophy. cuba will become an open country again. weapon it does, baseball is going to look right there at havana. there was a great team in triple-a for years in havana called the havana sugar games. >> gary: they'll fit right n it's into the long trip. just outside. pena thought about going after it. stays away a three ball, two strike count. >> buck: trying to go backdoor with a breaking ball and pena offered at it, but checked his swing in time and the ball came around the plate. >> gary: so, 3-2, bun down. pena battling here fouls away. >> buck: ball four. did georgia favor as that fastball was up and away. >> gary: this has really begun a -- been a grind it out game. each team getting two runs in the inning. royals getting one in the eighth to tie it.

9:42 pm
alex gordon coming to the plate. he has singled, struck out and flied out. has hit successfully in the last six ballgames. he is 0-6 against sherrill. oh, gets away. huff will track it down and freel will stay. that was close. >> buck: it sure was. obviously, freel was aware of that step off snap throw from george sherrill and aubrey huff got enough of it. watch the effort by huff as he gets it in the end of his glove. keeps it close enough to keep freel at first base. that ball gets by him and freel is going to end up at third with one out. >> gary: alex gordon, only 45 at-bats on the year coming off the d. l. lob tossover. even that one is a little wide.
9:43 pm
>> buck: aubrey huff had an adventurous night last night taking throws from brian bass. he threw one over his head and had a pickoff he really had to stretch to play. >> gary: snap throw again. gordon is the number eight hitter. betancourt behind him. you're thinking about whether or not you want to chance it here in the ninth inning with freel the pinch-runner on at first. check swing. did he go? no. >> buck: he used the slide step very effectively and threw a slide step breaking ball. generally when players see a side step, they associate it with a fastball because you're trying to pitch quickly to eliminate the chance of a steal, but when you throw a slide step breaking ball, it
9:44 pm
can be extremely effective. >> gary: 1-0 count. gordon will take it up high. the count goes to 2 had been 0. now it's -- 2-0. now it's gordon. gordon got his first multihit ballgame last night when he got the 2-4, came back on july 14 from the rehab and sherrill will step off. freel has not increased his lead. 2-0 delivery to gordon. he is going for the warehouse on that one. 2-1. >> buck: yeah, upstairs fastball. george sherrill set it up effectively. he had thrown enough breaking balls in this at-bat to put that in gordon's mind. when he elevated the fastball,
9:45 pm
it was only 87, but it was a little quick for gordon. >> gary: alex gordon only 25 years old. another one of major league baseball's young stars. 2-1 delivery on the way to him. good jam shot's got that one in a bit and the count goes to 2-2. yet another player learning at the major league level. he came up with only 400 plus at-bats in the minor leagues. 2-2. and he got him. battles back from a 2-0 count to get the strikeout on gordon. >> buck: good job by sherrill and wieters after using the breaking ball early, they came with the fastball and threw three of them right by alex gordon. george sherrill tried to get him to -- get him to chase the
9:46 pm
breaking ball early, fell behind and battled back with good fastballs. >> gary: now two down in the ninth inning of a tie game. freel remains on at first base and here is yuniesky betancourt. who takes the pitch inside for a ball. betancourt has popped out and grounded out twice. he got gee denied a base hit on a fine play that was made by izturis back in the fourth inning. 1-0 breaking ball in there for a strike. betancourt 1-4 off the oriole closer in his career. 1-1 delivery to him. another breaking ball. betancourt sometimes almost gets a running start at the plate. he moves both feet especially

9:49 pm
the exciting conclusion, gary and buck. >> gary: gentlemen, let's see what happens in this one here as kansas city will go to the bullpen again. colon worked 1 2/3 inning, bale, 2/3 of an inning gave up one hit, one struck out. john buck will come on to do the catching and we'll have a new battery with jamey wright out of the pen. >> buck: the big right-hander jamey wright. he has bounced around. started out in colorado and had a couple stints in texas and on here to try to keep this game scoreless. >> gary: avenues work horse with the rangers. 75 games last year and was the most ever by a right-hander in the texas-washington franchise history. jamey wright will work here. jones, huff and markakis due up for the orioles. a 3-3 ballgame. the orioles have a clans to win here in their last at-bat. home run came in the first

sam adams boston lager is my favorite because it has so much flavor. so i wanted to design a glass that would enhance the taste of boston lager. we did a laser etch on the bottom. it releases the hops aromas this bulb is for collecting aromas. there's a little ridge on the inside. and that allows you to sense the hops as it enters your mouth. the way this hits your tongue, you really get the full flavor out of sam adams lager. having a boston lager in this glass was like tasting a boston lager for the first time again.

not hit the ball on the good part of the bat, but he always finds sway to get base hits. this is what they did. good, moving fastball down in the zone. matt wieters tonight got ahold that have one right there. a nice double on that. look at that pitch. a nice sinker on the outside corner. he goes the other way. kind of reminds me a little bit of way am eddie murray used to react to very tough pitches. i'm not putting wieters in that category quite yet. he is off and run wag very good swing and four hits tonight goes to show you what he's capable of doing. >> well, wieters extends his hitting streak to six consecutive games and he has 10 base hits in that hitting streak. so, wieters getting hot and his teammate nolan reimold has been hot. he continued it tonight not only extended his hitting streak to five consecutive games, but it's a fifth consecutive multihit game. you talk about a guy who goes to the plate comfortable. it's as if reimold knows he's going to get a base hit when he goes up there. he knows it. >> it is an entirely different swing from matt wieters. much more powerful and much

more level swing. i wouldn't call it a home run swing. i call it a strong line drive swing. he is on every pitch right now t doesn't matter. i see him throwing them breaking balls. i see him throwing sinkers in on his hands. the curve ball right there. another strong effort right interest. good, solid contact. almost every single 'at-bat. you see with a a threat he has become now in the middle of that order as we get guys on base in front of him. this kid right here, he's got the perfect disposition. he takes everything nice and easy. you can see another multihit game tonight. >> nolan reimold, who had a little bit of a market correction as we like to call t- but he broke out it have when began to use all of the fields again. now he's getting pitches to pull again. we're seeing much the same thing with matt wieters you'ding the whole field, spread -- spreading it around not being predictable. >> the maturity is what jim was just talking about. when a hitter has trouble, it's usually from trying to throe show too much power, trying to get balls and get that top handiworking too much. the maturity of the hitter will be when he goes back to hitting

the small game. take the ball the opposite way. don't try to do too much with it. make good, solid contact and all of a sudden he's back on his game again and reimold vmd out of the chute. unbelievable since the all-star break. >> kansas city wins a final of 4-3 getting the tying run in the eighth and the winning run in the 11th. royals won the first two games in the four-game series a second straight night kansas city celebrates a win.

jason berken six strong innings tonight trailed 2-0 after three batters in the game d not allow another run. settled down nicely and gave his team a chance to win. >> you know, he's been hot the whole series obviously. last two games he's made a bad pitch with the fastball up. he's got a ton of power to right center. we're trying to stay down with the ball a little bit and got to give credit to izzy and melvin. they came up to me after the home run and said settle in. that's what i tried to do.

>> do you feel like you could have went after the seventh inning? >> it was hot tonight. it was one of the days would i throw the pitch and see sweat fly off my jersey. i felt like i had thrown my pitches, 85 pitches sore something -- or something like that. i felt good the whole night. i felt like i was done and was good. >> you said you felled like -- felt like you did what towd do and kept the team in the game and settled downed and did what they expected you to do tonight. >> yeah, it's never fun putting two runs in the first and you put your team in the hole. jones gets a home run to get us back to even. once we were back to even, said, hey, keep us in the game and give us a shot and try to get deep in the game. >> the results are starting to come. you have the win-loss record wasn't there for you in some things d it test you a little bit just dealing with it? >> yeah, just not fun looking up seeing 1-8. i wish my wins had loss record was better.

i'll trying to stay positive with everything. it's not easy up here. it's a constant game of adjustments. i'm just trying to adjust and be consistent at the base. i think the thing i lacked the whole year has been too up and down and i'm trying to find a way to go out there and get five, six, seven innings every time out there and keep us in the game. >> you said your -- [ indiscernible ] >> yeah, i felt like i had good starts throughout the year. i think the start against detroit was good and -- but obviously tonight was my better start of the year. hopefully i can build on the start. even my last two starts, hopefully i'll keep building and keep work on it and get ready for the next one. >> so, no decision for jason berken. there are the numbers. he goes six innings, allow twos runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two in 88 pitches. berken over his last 11 starts is 0-8 with three no decisions. the thing about jason berken, rick, i'd like to get your opinion about this. berken knew how important this start was to him individually.

obviously, weapon you go to the mound, you're pink for the team. he was also pitching for his spot on the roster. dave trembley just announced chris tillman is coming up tomorrow. somebody has to go off the roster for tillman to be added to make that start tomorrow night. what does it tell you about him that three batters into this game he's down 2-0, but this fr there he did not allow another run? >> there's been a rot of pressure on jason berken ever since he start this had eight- game losing streak. it's something when you go out there time and time again and things don't seem to fall in place and then he has trouble with his command and his control. something had a he just didn't do in the minor leagues. this guy was a strikeout pitcherment he didn't walk very many people. he never had problems keeping the ball down in the zone. he comes to the major leagues and goes through that little streak. it tells you he's so anxious to pitch well at this level that things really got out of whack for a while. tonight was a good test of his mettle out there. i talked to joe jornd, the scouting director for the orioles and said what is this kid made of? i hate to evaluate a guy in a

short time in the major leagues what his worth is not organization. he he said he's a tough kid. he'll keep battling. i don't see that nolan ryan kind of stuff out there on the mound too, but a lot of pitches are good and have great careers just like jason berken who will learn all of a sudden they get a feel for it and they're able to duplicate that five, six, seven aits eight starts in a row. i think we've got to give this kid a chance down the road. >> the one thing if anything to this point, he's showing the ability to adjust and that's what you've got to have. you have to learn that you need to adjust and then have the ability to go out and do it. kansas city wins it 4-3 in 11 tough loss for the series. elsewhere in the american league tonight, elsewhere in baseball, tampa bay over the yankees 6-2. so, tampa bay bounces back after losing last night to new york. they're in the 10th inning, oakland and boston tied at 7-7. papelbon blew a save as oakland got third in the inning. mariners with a 1-0 lead on toronto. texas at home beats detroit 7- 3. rangers back-to-back wins overt tigers. minnesota in the ninth leads
