>> rob: it's time for the nats to start playing a little better against the pittsburgh pirates. welcome to pnc park! the folks coming in for a saturday night baseball game and a concert afterwards. the pirates have beaten the nats four out of five so far this year. bob carpenter, rob dibble, welcome to western pennsylvania. no matter where we are on the map, ryan zimmerman has been very good lately. >> rob: and he's right at the heart of this nucleus. it is a very young ball club. elijah dukes comes up. ryan zimmerman, our all-star third baseman has been on fire lately. defensively we know he is stellar. he has a great glove at third. one error in the last basically two dozen ballgames. and then with the bat he has been stellar. he has bunch of home runs alot of rbi's. he's really starting to swing the bat the way he should a nice guy to sit in that three hole and adam dunn comes up behind him. look at how good? first in at-bats, second or third or fourth, top five in

almost every category for third basemen in the major leagues so ryan zimmerman, our all-star, he is the nucleus of this team. >> right there with the best in this league and both leagues at his position. now, elijah dukes was sent down to triple-a one month ago today. he was hitting .244 for the nats in 57 games. he went down there, worked hard. at .279, elijah is back! p)@)@)

the nats are only 12-38 on the road. they need to get something going in this series, three games left in this set against the battling bucs. and elijah dukes is back. .288 average overall in syracuse. three home runs, 10 rbi's. and when he was sent down a month ago r. ago, right on the first of july hitting .244 for the nats. interesting, though, it moves josh willingham back to left field. we'll tell you more about the defense aspect of this move, and this is vir gill vazquez. he is 27 years of age. he was born in venezuela and has been in this country a long time. he has had five games, three starts with the tigers. back in the big leagues making his seventh start with the pirates. >> rob: the pnc scouting report. he can throw a strike. he is a late bloomer, 27 years old. as bob said, this is his 10th career start. and this might be his last

chance to walk the plank, get some people out, or he might be going to the bullpen or, even worse, back to the minor leagues, let go by the tigers and the red sox. >> bob: the pirates defensively have the fewest errors in the national league. and andrew mccouchen is one to watch in center field. he's the reason nyjer morgan is a national. lastings milledge, second game since his recall. and brandon moss out there with those two young steedsters tonight. andy laroche lad a great game at third base last flight and ryan doumit is there at catcher and a nice hand for nyjer morgan who gets introduced. nyjer morgan oh-fer four with a walk and a pick-off last night. the first pitch of the game is up and away. we're underway at 7:06 eastern. hazy, cloudy, and 79, but quite, quite muggy in theburg

.304. up the middle. right through the wickets and the nats have a base runner with one out. you'll hear a smootherring of applause for the nats tonight. there's a whole bunch of fan whose have made the trip up here. the nationals have not made an error since they made four a week ago last night at home against san diego. the bullpen pretty good since the break, under three run as game. and the pirates lead the national league. they have only made 43 errors this year. so there are a lot of curly w's and d.c.s and lots of nats fans hanging around in pittsburgh. >> rob: and they have the cameras out for ryan zimmerman who hit one a mile last night. >> bob: i saw ryan after the game. i said, son, you got all of that one. he said it sure felt good. i just wish there had been a couple of men on base. that was his 20th. ryan has had 20 or more for the third time in his young career.

he gets jammed and hits it up the middle. guzman is going to turn and go to third. mccouchen's throw is late and the nats have a corner situation with one out. and a good job by gods guzman of identifying that that ball had not been hit that hard. roy a very head's up play here. the jam shot. christian guzman realizes this is not a hard hit ball. it is going to take a while for him to get to it. he takes a little stutter step and then puts that high gear on again. i was just going to say. i know there is an errorless streak, but they have made a lot of young mental errors, whether it is hernandez, fernandez or even the young nieves not blocking the plate. >> bob: this is true. >> rob: think, if the ball is hit to me, what do i have to do? if i have to throw it into somebody, where do i go? things like that you should nee at this level. >> bob: by the way, the first

inning has been a big problem for yafz that ball is going away from milledge and it is a fair ball. he can't get there! guzman scores. zimmerman to third and dunn to second with a double! adam dunn hit it where it hurts and the nats are on the board and this year now in the first inning, opponents are 13-29 against vazquez. >> rob: he has a good sinker. 88 to 90 miles per hour. he throws it down and away that is our lastings milledge. that's why we traded you. he can't come up with the catch. >> bob: .448 is the opponents' batting average now against -- for the opponents against vir gill vasquez. breaking ball. that thing was hanging. >> rob: that is the curve ball

that worries them because he is slow. you saw the arm speed. he slows his arm down to throw that pitch, so it is very recoginzable to a hitter. a good late breaking slider. decent changeup. >> bob: the 0-1 to willingham. another late breaking ball and he fouls it. he has been a pretty good two- strike hitter lately. >> rob: around the batting cage, i feel pretty good when you do good. he said i feel pretty good when i do good. she is a great guy. >> bob: it hit him. an 0-2 fastball up and in. it got him on the elbow guard, and now the nats have the bases loaded with one out. >> rob: 0-2. vasquez tries to come inside and bangs him.

it is a nice smooth delivery, good arm speed. your pitching coach is not going to like that. >> bob: what an interesting situation for elijah dukes to make his return to the major leagues. his first at-bat, the bases are loaded in the top of the first. elijah, six homers, 30 rbi's this year. and there is that big rolling breaking ball, but he missed with it. >> rob: i told you, one oh of my favorite guys to watch is elijah dukes. he is very, very quiet. he doesn't do a whole lot of moving in the box. >> bob: and that breaking ball is foul. it came up and hit him. the count is even at 1-1. base

guys before. the second among rookies is andrew mccutchen on the southwest.com lineup. this kid is so 10-22 in his last six games at the home park here. lastings milledge, two hits in his return to the big leagues last night. ryan doumit may be the other young player you know all about. stammen pitched into the seventh inning against the pirates that night before struggling. and adam laroche two-run homer, that was the big blow in that, but he did pitch very well against the pirates in his major league debut for the most part. mccutchen hitting a .281. a chopper foul. an on-base average of .339. not a bad 0-2 pitch. over a bit low.

mccutchen is only 22. out of fort meade, florida, where he was a politicallity- sport star in high school. stammen jams him and get as foul ball. there he is, 2-4 with two of his season's three rbi's last night. lastings milledge. 2-2. stammen's 14th start, opponents hitting .266 against him. and turning on that one, mccutchen, the left-field line. he struggled and hit fair and at the wall. it is a home run! josh willingham couldn't get it! and that is the one corner of left field where you can get a 325 or 30-foot fly to leave!

>> rob: well, 2-2 pitch. too much of the plate. mccutchen. he get as good whack at it. and it doesn't make great contact, but just enough to clear the wall right by the fair pole. crazy. >> bob: you know, i've noticed teams play their left fielders pretty far off the line here because it is so shallow down there, and then it gets deep so quickly. but now we've already seen two runs tonight that might have been prevented. milledge was playing dunn way out in left center and if josh willingham is waiting for that one, he might have been able to grab it, he had a long way to go. and now milledge turns an fouls one. >> rob: my number two thing on my thing to look for tonight on p. y. c., finish them off. get -- he gets ahead very well. three as lot of strikes. 0-2 on the first hitter, 0-2 on this guy.

put him away. >> bob: that is only the 76th of the year, homer, for the pirates. they know that is a long fly ball out in some ballparks. milledge reaches out and has one to center. nyjer morgan is right there. >> rob: jump all over the p. y. -- pnc scouting report here. the nationals have won three of the last four starts, including the one he could not finish where josh willingham hit two grand slams. to finish them off, he gets ahead very well. she a road warrior, 2-2, and much better on the road than at home this year. he can throw a lot of strikes, but you have to be able to put big league hitter ace way once you get ahead. >> bob: here is garrett jones hitting .310. >> rob: yeah, that milwaukee game he lasted four and 2/3. the nationals ended up winning the ballgame 14-6, and he guilty a no decision.

>> bob: five runs on nine hits. stammen has seen the pirates before, of course. he came it of that ballgame with a 5.68 e.r.a. and then the 0-2. well outside. the third consecutive hitter. he has gotten to that point in the count. garrett jones is is a 28-year- old outfielder from harvey, illinois, originally signed by atlanta 10 years ago. left center. nyjer morgan can't get there and plays it hon a hop. john lannan, pretty hittable last night and stammen, not a great start here tonight. now, here is the defense we talked about with elijah dukes and his 10 assists in right field. josh willingham back to left where he's more comfortable, and with morgan in the middle,

very, very good. al weathero gonzales struggling a bit in the field and big-time with the bat. the nats need to get him going, and here is ryan doumit, the catcher, hitting just .245. and he rolls a double play ball. gonzales, guzman, and a made-to- order 4-6-3. that will save some pitches. the lead-off homer by andrew mccutchen, his fourth of the year. 2-1 after one. ♪

 >> the nats up 2-1 as we mo to the bottom of this second inning. it seems like the nats have definitely been playing better baseball and with more of a sense of urgency. i asked craig stammen how is the tone in the clubhouse, how has it changed under jim riggleman? >> we're not satisfied with losing. i think we weren't before, but now it has come to the forefront and we talk about it instead of it just being this the back of our minds. we're always thinking about it, and when we lose we still are thinking about it. >> i think the players feel more accountable and that has definitely translated into better play. gentlemen? >> bob: the nats over the last 12 games have split those. that's even with losing three in a row. so taking care of that one right there is alberto

gonzalez. delwyn young the start the bottom of the second. rob, you can speak to that. you know, you hear people talk about a sense of urgency, to me, that is something that has to come from the players because nobody who is not in uniform in the clubhouse knows what they're talking about when they bring up such things. >> they have so many young guys, but right now the one thing they should all realize is a lot of them are playing for their jobs, not just for this year, but for next year, the last 60 games they're being evaluated by jim riggleman, the coaching staff and everybody in the front office, and when they go to the winter meetings, some guys are not going to be here next year so it all depends on how you play these next few months. there is mike rizzo. he is doing a fantastic job and it is just a question of you have to have smarts to go along with talent. >> bob: zimmerman will yield to guzman.

two quick outs. >> rob: a guy throws 95 or a guy -- boy, he hits great in batting practice. you have to show it in the game. >> bob: yes. >> bob: right around 60, of all of these put together. jordan zimmermann threw a bullpen yesterday. they're not sure exactly when they're going to bring him back, but he is back and throwing after that rest period for his elbow, and that's good news. and a ball popped up left side off the bat of brandon moss. ryan zimmerman there, and stammen has a great inning as nobody comes close to centering the ball. zimmerman, dunn and willingham coming up!

on-ways average, fantastic. slugging percentage, way up there. the first time up, he didn't hit the ball that hard. he got jammed and ryan is strong enough to muscle that ball over the second baseman for a base hit. >> rob: line drive in the paper tomorrow. 1-1 pitch. he hits another one hard. 2-2 ryan zimmerman. 117 hits on the year. when he is locked in, not many are better. >> rob: you see that first step right towards the plate. and i would never say this unless he was my guy, but if you're a pitcher, you're going to have to start throwing a little more inside to keep him from diving. keep ripping the tar out of the ball. >> bob: adam dunn collected his 75th rbi with the high fly

that are going to take great at- bats and make the pitcher work. >> bob: 3-2 with nobody out. ryan has not attempted a stolen base this year. >> rob: thus the need to keep him close. >> bob: and dunn, a strikeout hitter, the probability of a strike 'em out, throw 'em out probability is high. but the runner is going and also the probability of a good batting eye and dunn walks for the 79th time this year. so he threw him a changeup on 3- 2 and the nats have something going here. josh willingham will bat with a couple of men aboard for the second straight time. he was up there with second and third in the first inning, and an 0-2 pitch hit him on the left elbow.

>> rob: that is a pitch that bard wanted down, the center of the hitting zone you could maybe be the least talented major leaguer and you're going to have a field day with witches that are that good. you have to start getting in and away. i think he is going to share that with mr. stammen. >> bob: we made no bones about it, for the most part in milwaukee, it 'twas nationals the' bats that got them one win. now, colin balester was pretty good on tuesday, two runs, five hits in six innings in an 8-3 win.

a 40-man roster. a lead-off man on for the ind, nd time in úa row. the nationals won nine games and lost 18 in the month of july. they were third in average, and pretty good with runners in scoring position and on-base percentage. nyjer morgan and they scored lots of runs, so the nats won five games in april, nine in may, nine in june and  july. there is the first pitch take for gonzales. he has -- hasn't proven he can get ahead of anyone tonight. >> rob: he hasn't proven he has anything to get anyone out. he has four pitches hhe throws for strikes but none of them are great. >> bob: there is 2-0 again. >> rob: you shouldn't be intimidated.
