4:28 pm
and comes out today after too poorly started game games by lannan and stammen. fastball, curveball, establish the fastball, couldn't get out of the 6th, but that's okay. office there long enough to give the team a chance to win the game. he made one bad pitch, and that was to cedeno, and he got some coverage from the offense. >> this was not the best offensive game. they had more runs and more hits last night. when that happens, it just takes up with or two key swings at key times to win a game. >> rob: hitting in the 4-hole was josh willingham, he did a fantastic job out of this huge home run. he came out a little later and would hit a nice double for some insurance so josh willingham inserted into the 4-hole to give dunn a day off against a tough lefty. did a great job. i think that kind of sustained
4:29 pm
contribution has been fantastic from the top of the order, we teed to get the bottom of the order going. gonzalez had big hits, and that's the bottom line. if we can get a sustained consistent concerted efforts from the staff and team, we're going to win some more games. >> the big swings of the day, josh willingham, he's with debbi taylor. >> debbi: bob, yes, it was tough with maholm early on. what adjustments did you make? >> he was throwing a sinker, and when you have a sinker ball, you have to concentrate on -- -- just try to stay through it. that's what i did. i was able it hit it out. >> deb better: -- debbi: and you got an insurance run. what's been the key to you hitting well? >> i can't pinpoint. i wish i could.
4:30 pm
just trying to come out and play hard and get at-bat as much as i can. that's all i can control, after been getting good pitches, they have been finding holes. >> new york good outing by balester. what did you see out of him? >> i think the key with collin, when he gets ahead, he's very effective, and he was able to get ahead, and make them hit his pitch. that's the key when you talk about starting pitchers making them hook their mitch. >> and you know what it's like to struggle. what was it like to -- >> we've been through it, through the slumps, the only thing to do is keep battling and showing up. he was able to drive in a key run late in the game. because it was a good pitch. getting every run we can was huge. >> thank you very much. back to the studio. >> thank you.
4:31 pm

how you do it, boys and girls. i love that. gonzalez gets a fielder's choice, and scores a run. rbi, we're up 1-0. we did put the run on the board. zim is -- willingham gets the ball he likes. he's seen a lot he likes. big home run to left field, two runs, go up 3-2. then it didn't stop. you see him staying back all that power. he's a strong man. belliard doubles over the head of milledge. gonzalez then 4-46 slump gets a fashion ball down the third baseline, doubled into a rbi. 8th inning, zim, who else, walks on a 3-2 count. ball down and away. then willingham doubled.
4:35 pm
zim scores from first base. third rbi for willingham, and it puts the nationals up 5-3, and were able to hold on as macdougal game in to slam the door. >> the box score here for the nationals. the big thump, the home run, dukes doing it on the base pass and single, belliard with a double, and gonzalez, two rbis today, and there's the rest for wil nieves and balester. nothing at the plate for nieves, but behind the plate, he was responsible for squelching rallies, making some big plays. >> he doesn't necessarily get paid to hit. he gets paid to handle the pitchers, and to use that arm, and he's finally getting a chance to throw people out. couple of real clutch situations, the third inning, this is milledge taking 0 off out by a long way. almost like a missed sign, and then the clutch in the 6th. he takes off, and he's out
4:36 pm
farther than that. check this out. he could have stopped it. on a breaking ball, great throw, perfect release. the ball is out in a hurry. and two speedsters -- >> and then the game changer. >> i mean, laroche gets out, he's dancing doesn't know what to do. see you! he's arguing a little bit. it didn't look like he was out, but still, a great throw, and on the other angle, tag might be a little late. but hey, i trust the umpire, he was there. see you later. >> it goes both ways. >> wil nieves, you talk about his pint point accuracy at second, and -- his pinpoints accuracy at second. gunning him down. >> you're taught when the breaking ball, the ball is in the dirt, that you go.
4:37 pm
if you see it bounce away, but unfortunately for laroche, the ball bounced into him, and juggled and then he was in no-man's land. >> the bullpen was brought to task of finishing off this game and balester got them there, and burnett and the rest kept them at bay. >> five different relievers come in, he brings burnett in, burnett pops up. then sosa comes in, struggles a little, gave up a home run in that inning, also a hit, but everybody else was just -- bergmann went 2/3 of an inning, just one hit, villone comes in, and still looking at sosa here. >> that home run hurt. >> yes. and bergmann two quick outs, and then ends up breaking ball down,
4:38 pm
struck him out, and then villone relieves and gets left-handed hitting jones to pop up. macdougal lashes out in the 9th. after retiring the first two guys. line drive to shortstop. national racks up another one. >> how about that strategy by riggleman: using everybody, all the pitchers trying to get that win. >> he's a matchup guy. manny had a tendency to let the pitcher finish what he was doing, especially the bull again guys and didn't do the matchup thing. you won't see that with riggleman. he managed coach, bench coach under tony la russa. tony is the best matchup guy in baseball, if not in the history of the game. he will look for the matchups. and he doesn't care if the guy just threw 3 pitches.
4:39 pm
>> sosa, he did get a strike out. elijah is coming up. you'll have some butterflies. >> he shouldn't have the butterflies that others have, he has had so much experience, about you when you go to aaa, and you've been put on waivers, you believe were you're not good enough to pitch in the big league. he's pitching for his baseball life, as a lot of people have done here. but he does have the kind of stuff that he's able to get people out and he did a great job down there, and hopefully he can settle in here and do the job that's there and those older guys couldn't do. >> with the win, the nationals have a chance to get two out of four. gates mock looking for his first win at a starter in the nationals uniform. we will spotlight what garrett can do to beat the bucs monday night as we continue on nats xtra. to ride in the bottom of the plane in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one

4:47 pm
know, he's in a little trouble there. and that play got us out of trouble. we certainly were happy with wil nieves' play. balester was good. he left a couple 0-2 pitches there as bergmann did late in the game, and that's something that is really getting the ire of mccatty. that's an area we have to clean up. lots of 0-2 pitches, breaking balls left in the zone, and they are going to get hit in the big league, and they are getting hits. other than that, i thought they both, those two guys threw very well. of course, burnett did a great job for us, anvil loan continues to be, continues to get necessary outs for us. overall, it's a good ballgame. >> how much confidence. >> gonzalez is a good player. he's just, he knows how to play the game, has good instinct, he's done nothing but hit at the big league level. he's probably been a bitter hitter in the big league than minor. it seems like that's how it's been for him, and he's, he's playing loose and easy, and hopefully he will continue jim riggleman on the win. balester with 5 and 2/3. >> just throwing first pitch strikes, being able to get ahead of the guys, and one thing i need to work on was throwing curve balls in the dirt, unhit-able pitch, and overall, it was a good outing. just throwing strikes is the main thing, and i finally figured that out. and i've been able to have success. >> are you starting to feel good about your mound presence?
4:49 pm
yeah, definitely. down there in aaa, i had a couple games i got upset, and lost it, and that's where i would go down, but this year, after that, being able to just calm, be calm and compete at a standing pace, and go after the guys and not let things that happen badly cause my to falter. >> three innings and a rain delay against st. louis, you add this to that and milwaukee, and -- >> he's starting to rise quickly in that lineage of good young arms, as he probably was about maybe 6th or 7th about a month ago. and martis was ahead of him. but he has pitched well enough now to probably ascend into the top five. >> chance for a 4-4 road series for the nationals. 2-2 against pittsburgh if they
