it is the beautiful city of toronto, ontario, canada as the orioles come to open a three- game stand against the blue jays, a team they have a winning record against on the season. >> lots of noise here tonight. the 1992, 1993 championship teams of toronto are being recognized. they have a tremendous turn- out. they're being introduced behind us. about winning, bringing the fans back, about reminding toronto about how they got to be a winning franchise. it the same kind of thing the orioles are trying to do. how do you win? how do you get back to that post-season. well, we thought we'd take a

look at how some of the teams are on their way to the postseason this year. here are the numbers. this is what the orioles are striving to do. catch up with the division leaders. we're looking at starting pitching. the wins' column is about how many wins by starters there are for each of these teams. note how far above 27 the orioles' number, those numbers are. the e.r.a., the different shall in numbers may seem small. the orioles, 5.38 to catch up to some of these others, but that run and a half to two runs per game is all about the difference in binning or losing those ballgames. and the innings pitched by starters. the orioles are 5.1. you've got to get up to somewhere around that six-plus inning mark for your starters in order to be competitive with the team whose are winning right now. so if you have goals and objectives for orioles' starters, those are the numbers, buck martinez, that you look to. >> it sure is. all of the teams on the top of the list are go dog the postseason and that's how you

do it, with starting particular -- pitching. >> they're young, talented, they're really confident that they can win up here on this level, but we have to allow them time to grow. we're seeing spurts, but eventually you're going to see the consistent from this starting stuff that will propel them. >> on this road trip, we have seen consistency from a number of players even though they only won 1-3 in detroit. adam jones, home runs acouple of rbi's against the tigerring and quality at-bats. brian roberts has hit in nine of the last 10 and a .326 batting average. for wigginton finally getting some playing time, he's 4-12 against the detroit tigers. he'll play here. izturis, outstanding defensive plays and at the plate he got his second home run of the season against the detroit tigers going 3-10. nick markakis, he has hit in eight of the last nine at a .394 clip.

of course we go back to pitching and brian mat advertise who made his debut against the detroit tigers, a lot of promise with the family on hand to watch him pitch. some of the highlights from the road trip so far. >> and you can see there are a lot of parts in place now. they're going to have to continue to grow. all of those young players that are doing so well will grow. you have to complement them with couple of key pieces. i still think one thing on andy macphail's mind is a punch to be the lead dog with all of these young starting pitchers. >> we have a new back-up catcher tonight. gregg zaun is gone. the start is going to be delayed while toronto goes through these me-game activities. when we come back, buck had a chance to talk with the youngster, brian mat advertise. you'll hear the interview in just a moment! @x@0@p@0@6p)@)@)@

clear answer. it is the only thing from honda that won't last. >> back here in toronto on an absolutely gorgeous day, the roofer will be open for the ballgame tonight here at the rogers centre. and for the orioles, the hope will be that jason berken, one of the young pitchers, can find his way into a w. column and maybe some significant innings pitched. brian mat advertise certainly did that -- ma toc. >> it sure is. he was outstanding over his start. >> five innings, one earned run, six hits. i spoke to brian how special it was for his major league debut to share it with so many family and friends. >> it was awesome because i had so many family and friends from all over the country. i had my mom's side of the family from new york. i had all of my coaches from san diego come out and family

and friends from arizona. so there were a lot of people and a lot of support. it was just a nice feeling to have that. >> obviously you have developed a great relationship with your college coach rich hill. to hear him at that ballpark, that had to be special or you. >> it it really is. he is pretty busy with recruiting and doing a lot of things with the program there in san diego. to have them come out as well as my three other coaches an colleges, it is just a great feeling to know that they support me and know that they're there. >> we all think about the major league debut and what it will be like. how close is it to you? >> i think about it all the time. i was in the minors, college, i thought about it almost every day, what it would be like to have that debut, and so it is still the same game. it is. other than battling the nerves and the excitement and the bigger ballpark, it is still the same game. you still have to go out there and throw the same pitches an battle each and every inning. i just had such a great time, such a great experience and it

was lot of fun. >> when you came off the field after the first inning, one, two, three, did your heart slow down a little bit at that point? >> yeah. i was able to finally realize what was going on, but i knew i still had to go back out there in the second. and we were still going out there and battling trying to win a ballgame. and the nerves did calm a little bit after that first inning. >> i guess you'll always be able to say to your grandchildren that you struck out miguel cabrera for your first major league strikeout. that had to be special. >> i think so. i think i threw my best changeup of the night to him. i was able to get in front of it and get him -- it down and caught him off guard to be one of the best hitters in the plains for my first strikeout is quite a memory -- memory. >> you got a chance to throw to the number one draft pick. you were the number one draft pick last year. how much growth have you seen in your catcher, matt wieters, since the first time you saw him in arizona? >> i worked with matt throughout the entire fall

league in arizona. we worked real well together, learning each other's strengths, going back and forth, and i thought we worked real well the other night as well. i don't think anything changed. it felt the same. and i didn't shake matt off the entire night. i thought we were on the same page and hopefully we can work together more to come. >> when we talk about the young pitchers on the staff now, how much they gain from each other many in the -- other in the competition and the fact that you're comfortable with one another, how important is that now that you're working a team? >> it is great. we talk all the time. i know berken and i had a conversation in the outfield the other night, just about our experiences and how it goes and even with tillman, hernandez and the other guys. we all talk. we all have fun with it and i can't believe how fast it came. >> you don't hit against him obviously, but take us to sunday and pitching against roy halladay, a cy young award winner. you watched him a lot. what will that mean to you when

you go to the mound on sunday? >> that's going to be a fun game, i can't wait. just to know i'll be standing on the same mound with one of the best pitcher, it will be fun. tillman, his first outings are against greinke and verlander. he has quite a match-up there. it will be fun to be matched against matt halladay. >> there are the numbers for brian ma touse in his maiming league debut a very solid five innings giving up just that one run, six hits. he has five strikeouts and three walks. the 22-year-old getting the victory. buck, i thought most impressive was the fact that he got some big outs in that appearance. >> buck: he never got rattled. he is very calm and collected. >> all right. we have told you special ceremonies are taking place here for the 1992, 1993 championship teams. we will be back for the game and "o's xtra" is coming up!

to talk to about what it is like to win? we found somebody, the first base coach and he asked shelby about his millionries about what it took to win and the experience, how they played it on the field. >> i still remember games where we were losing by three runs, four runs, in the bottom of the seventh inning at home and i can hear eddie murray's voice saying we got them right where we want them. the next thing you know we were walking a team off the field. these guys had tremendous amount of confidence. they believed they could win. we had a very good ball club. there was no way in the world i ever actually felt like i could lose being around a bunch of guys like that. that was instilled in me. in 1988, i can't say we were more talented than the 1983 tam, but we were very close together. we played hard. we always went out. to me, for a team to win, you have to want to win every

ballgame but it is one game at a time. you go out and pick each other up. our pitching was good. beprobably didn't have the best hitting lineup, but there was nobody that could tell us we couldn't win. the most important thing is we had a lot of fun. the confidence was in us. i think that's what it takes to be a winning ball club. if you don't believe it, nobody is going to believe it for you. >> so john shelby amember of the orioles 1983 world championship team and also the dodgers 1988 world championship team. who else was on those two teams? oh, you! tell us about that. tell us about how the players draw from each other. >> they do. i had a lot of confidence in john shelby. we parallelled the teams. he was with the orioles for a long time and he was also with the los angeles dodgers. ways there in 1988. there were a lot of consistency between the two teams. when they talk about the oriole way, the dodger way, the yankee

way, it is the winning way, and every team that win as championship know what is i'm talking about. everybody pulls together and does the little things that it takes to win ballgames. john shelby was an outstanding center fielder and he did a lot of thins right. he understood his job. i did that. we all had roles to play and we melded together and we worked. good, hard work ethic, that's what provides you with the confidence it takes. once a team gets that, hay are tough, tough to beat. >> the pitching match-up tonight in toronto, it is a battle of rookies as jason berken goes to the mound. he won his big league debut and has not won since. he hopes to turn it around tonight. ricky romero is in contention for rookie of the year. that is your pitching match-up in game one of there three-game series. gary thorne and buck martinez will join you next. we're back with "o's xtra" postgame. it is the opener of the three- game series as the orioles' final stop on this road trip and the birds looking far win

>> >> gary: now we're ready to play baseball as the teams open their three-game set with jason berken and ricky romero and mark is with us. >> hey, gary, on this turn-back- the-clock night for the toronto blue jays, jason berken would like to turn the clock back to may 26 of this year when he made his major league debut. he came out, had a solid outing. he has struggled since. this will be his 14th major league start. the manager dave trembley says he cannot look at this as a do or die outing as he has struggled here. this isn't a try-out. that has been emphasized by the manager, and he has said that regardless of what happens tonight, the orioles have to score more runs. he says how is that for an idea? keep it simple. we need to score more runs, and hopefully jason berken can get back in the win column. back to you. >> all right, mark, if you want to see the different shall from that date forward, take a look.

these two matched up in the ballgame that jason within. since then berken has gone 07-9 with an e.r.a. over 7.00. ricky romero pitching again tonight. he has gone 8-3 be a 3.67. you talk about the north and south of it, buck. that's about as distinct as you can get. >> buck: ricky romero gave up 1 áhits and he took the loss and jason berken won. it has been a different story, opposite directions. romero, one of the top rookie pitchers in baseball. >> gary: let's take a look at the starting lineups. roberts, jones, markakis. wigginton, wieters and izturis. adam jones, two home runs, the month of august and a .381 average. >> buck: the scouting report, ricky romero, fastball, curve ball, slider and changeup. he is the fourth best rookie pitcher in the majors with his e.r.a. he is very comfortable on the mound her and ricky romero has an outstanding changeup, something we saw from brian

matusz on tuesday. the young pitchers have already polished the pitch that really sets up the fastball. >> gary: he is 24 years old. he has won his last three starts, and we're ready to go. brian roberts stands in. he will take the strike, and we are underway. the dome is open for the ballgame tonight. and it has been such a beautiful day here in toronto. really no need at all to even think about closing it. 0-1 delivery and that is a strike on the outside corner. and he is giving romero the early calls on the corn es. that will help both of these pitchers, if, in fact, they stay that way tonight. roberts is 3-5 often of romero. left-hander. that one will be fouled back. 68 degrees at game time tonight. the ball tends not to travel as far when it is open as it does when it is closed. >> buck: there has always been a lot of discussion about that,

and when this roof is open, sometimes that wind will catch up on the roof and shoot the wind right back toward home plate. >> gary: brian roberts, he laces that one into the corner and it is going to be a foul ball. roberts hit it hard, just missed. the orioles playing in two consecutive ballparks with a lot of room in the outfield. >> buck: you've got to have good speed in the outfield to have a very good defensive team. you can see how much space there is in the gaps there. artificial surface, the ball scoots through the gaps in a hurry. you have to have good speed in the outfield. >> gary: only one home run right-handed and romero will miss up high with it. and roberts trying to work the count and work romero here early on. off-speed delivery again to him. outfield, fairly shallow in center and right and back in

left. the delivery on the way and roberts to center field straight away. wells perfectly positioned hauls it in and roberts is out of there. >> buck: adam jones who makes his way to the plate hitting .300 for the season. he has had a good year against the toronto blue jays. he has really done a great number against a pretty good pitching staff. a guy that hit ricky romero the last time they met in baltimore, and the win for jason berken. and 19 home runs leads the orioles this season. at the rogers centre. he is 5-15, a home run, a could believe and four runs scored. so he is comfortable in his return to toronto and has great memories of hitting in this ballpark. >> gary: he will stand in against romero with one down, 2- 7 with a home run off of romero and the pitch is taken outside for a ball. for jones against the lefties, .259 as opposed to .323 against the right-handers. adam is already hitting .300 overall. plage when he starts hitting the left-handers which he is almost bound to do. he will swing at that one and

miss, and the hard cut. he has taken in detroit and again here. much harder cuts than we have seen him take all year. >> buck: yes, and terry crowley is a little concerned about this. terry has been talking to him about it. just be smooth. he has enough power. 19 home runs must be sitting in his mind. >> gary: one ball and one strike delivery on the way that is grounded to short. scutaro, two down. >> buck: we talk about speed in the outfield. let's take a look at the blue jays defensively. joe inglett, vernon wells and alex rios left to right. edwin encarnacion, he was just acquired with a deal with the cincinnati reds. a very good double play combination. and rod barajas who has had bun of the better years defensively for pitchers behind the plate. >> gary: and two down for nick

most home runs in the majors. alfonso soriano was the last second baseman to lead the ball club in home runs at second base. that one is going to be deep and foul. he just got a little bit out in front of that on berken. it is just a long strikeout, one and two. >> buck: he has established a franchise record for home runs in the single season for a bliewjs' second baseman, which is kind of significant tonight with robby alomar in the house, the great all-star second baseman here, part of that 1992- 93 world series team. and aaron hill has erased him from the home run record book. >> gary: 1-2 delivery up the middle. a chance for brian roberts, running throw and a good play and good positioning as roberts was shaded. they squeezed hill to the middle and that's exactly where he hit it. two down. >> buck: especially on this artificial surface. so positioning becomes very important. this ball skipped right over the monday and there is roberts shaded up the middle.

the ground ball towards third. encarnacion's throw there. two down here in the second inning. >> buck: ricky romero, five up and five down. this is in the an accident. you see where he ranks among the american league pitchers. he is tied with first with 10 wins, second in winning percentage, second in strikeouts, and his e.r.a., just behind brad bergesen. he is second in the american league. >> gary: and he is just having an outstanding season. i was talking with cito about romero before the game, cito gaston, the toronto a manager, and he said he's the one rookie i've got i don't have to worry about the innings that he pitches. he said i can keep him out there for the rest of the season. he can go as deep in games as he wants. he says we don't have to worry about that. with the others, case true with the orioles, these rookie pitchers, innings pitched and pitches thrown are going to be watched carefully because for most of them they just haven't

had the experience. romero, on the other hand, has. he was in the minor leagues for four seasons briar to the major league full season this year. swung on and miss bid mora. melvin with a big cut off of romero. romero is throwing strikes, i tell you that right now. everything is in there, and ahead on these hitters. two down and nobody on. melvin will take it inside for a ball. >> buck: and looking at ricky romero, a little bit of agarra comes to mind. very good delivery, good fastball up in zone. we have seen a slow breaking ball and a changeup already in this game. >> gary: 2-2 delivery on the way. that one right back to the mound. romero stabs it and gets the out. i can pitch and i can also play defense. another 1-2-3 inning. six in a row retired, overbay, wells and rios. ♪

we believe, it started at espn, that rios was claimed off the waiver wire by the chicago white sox. it is not confirmed. and if you are claimed off the waiver wire, the team in this case, toronto, has a right to pull you back and then negotiate maybe with the white sox. interesting, though, if that story is true, that rios is even playing, and he's going to get one. way back in left field. i hear the phone ringing. >> buck: almost the identical pitch that vernon wells hit. rios extends down, another fastball just kind of on the inner half of the plate. not great movement. not great location, and back-to-

process spents in the deal, and a lot of people around baseball are wondering why cincinnati would need him at this point when they basically are out of the pennant race. but it is more than just this year that they're concerned about. >> gary: 1-2 delivery that is to the gap in left center field. adam jones chasing it dunn and encarnacion on his way to second base, and he will have a stand-up double. the fourth game he has played for them or fifth game tonight and second double. >> buck: it is like a breaking ball. again, location is a problem for jason berken. matt wieters slides to the outside. you can see how badly the ball missed and hung over the heart of the plate. by the time jones gets it off the center field fence, encarnacion has a double. >> dave: the toronto blue jays lead the world when it comes to double and they have another, they have 241 two-bagger -- baggers on the year.

fan reaching out. real madrid is in town. they're playing exhibition football, known to us in the united states as a soccer game. last night at $15 a head, 18,000 people showed up for an hour practice, and the tickets for the game being played tonight were going for over $1,000 online, if you could find them. a massive turn out for real madrid and their soccer team. izturis swings and misses and sidney crosby came back with a stanley cup to nova scotia today. 25,000 people showed up. he brought the cup back to his home community. he is 22 years 'ol as well today and celebrated a birthday and they had 25,000 that came for a day of festivities. 1-2 delivery, breaking ball will be down low. >> buck: a pretty good birthday party. >> dave: not bad.

on base. that's one of the things he does. he takes a ton of pitches. in fact, he leads the majors with 28 walks when leading off an inning. as we said, he gets on base somehow, some way most of the time. that is in there for a strike. and the count will go to 2-1. scutaro, hill and lend coming up for toronto. the jays have lost their last two games. they had a two-game set against the yankees. they lost both games 8-4. 2-1 pitch. fastball inside, and the count goes to 3 -- 3-1. >> buck: again, the location has continued to -- jason berken down and now he falls into a hitter count and it gets very difficult when you're not commanding your breaking ball to be able to come back and throw breaking balls in fastball counts. >> gary: swung and a miss by scutaro. now he gets really tough. scutaro's average with two strikes is .293.
