>> jim: it's orioles baseball from masn from the roger centre in toronto. it's the you can remember game of the three-game series as the orioles square off against the toronto blue jays. hi, everybody. i'm jim hunter, thanks for joining us. this weekend, two of the young orioles starters faced adversity and both passed their recent tests. jason berken allowed back-to- back home runs in the 2nd inning to vernon wells and alex rios and quickly trailed in the game 2-0 but berken would adjust. he went six strong innings. early on, chris tillman had trouble getting loose. he felt behind early. it was two-run home run by alex rios that put the jays ahead but till mapp would not allow
1:02 pm
another run. he pitched into the 7th and took home a very tough luck no decision. joined now by buck martinez, watching these youngsters go to the mound, what we are learning is how they handling adversity. >> buck: there is no panic in any of these pitchers' minds. when they give up a run, they don't think about. they continue to make adjustments. jason berken did it friday night using his change-up instead of a slider. that's the kind of adjustments you want it see. >> jim: trying to pass a test, how about today, brian matusz goes to the mound, second big league start and he goes against the best pitcher in the american league i. it's brian matusz was very impressive in his debut against the detroit tigers. he knows what he is up against today. he is focused on what he has to do not what roy halladay will
1:03 pm
do. brian has 1 one. halladay has 114. last time out against the yankees, he went 9 inning, gave up 10 hits and took the loss what you will see from halladay is the approach. >> jim: it puts it into perspective when halladay has as many cy young awards as matusz has wins. >> buck: he's going to watch roy halladay in his innings and see how he approaches it. but i like matusz's make-up. he is not going to get rattled. he will try to establish his fastball as he did against the tigers. >> jim: hey, it's raining in toronto but no problem. we just close the roof. line-ups and first pitch are next. (announcer on call) off the glass, centered in front... oh what a great move, another great move... he skates in on goal... he scores!

airlines. book your next trip at southwest.com. and honda. the 2009 honda clearance is the on thing that won't last. it's raining here in toronto but no problem, the retractable roof is closed as the orioles and jays play the final game of this three-game series. felix pie will lead off. brian roberts sitting it out with a left contusion of his shin. izturis, jones and markakis. luke scott, big-time numbers, as big as they can be against roy halladay. six hits in his career. halladay is ready to go and pie swings and misses. >> buck: he keeps it same, sinker, cutter, spli. he is really tough on the orioles. he has 19 career wins against the orioles.
1:07 pm
>> jim: pie takes low. roy halladay now 32 years old, his 121st big league season and there are the numbers on the year. it's kind of amazing the way his year has gone as pie fouls it straight down. 11-5, very credible, 2.75 e.r.a. that's third best in the league but, buck, he has only won one game in his last eight starts as you look at pie fouling the ball off his foot. >> buck: there is another one of those cut fastballs. halladay has been a little bit of a struggle for him of late. he has the distraction of all the trade rumor, the speculation that the blue jays were going to move you. it kind of wears on you for a while. and pie is gone, weak swing and one away here in the 1st. >> buck: jays committed just 42 errors all year long, that's the fewest in the american league. jose batista, former orioles gets a start in left field.
1:08 pm
>> jim: here is cesar izturis. he moved up to the number 2 spot. a checked swing, appeal to third, he did not go, says gary cedarstrom. cesar has a modest two-game hitting streak going. >> buck: he's going to do that all afternoon to left handed hitters, throw that cut fastball right in on his hand. throws over 50% of his pitches, cut fastball in on the left handers i, 2-0 hit toward thelet side. scutaro has it deep at short and there will be no play. so the orioles who have not been getting a lot of early inning base runners get one
1:09 pm
here. >> buck: scutaro scoops it up, puts it into his pocket. there is no play. that's a departure. they have really had a tough time getting into the flow offensively so that's a good start here this afternoon. >> jim: brings up adam jones hitting third. team high 19 home runs and he has 6 had -- 64 rbis. >> jim: he fouls it off the home plate umpire i tim is a little dangerous today. jones fouled it off colbreath. and rod barajas giving his
1:10 pm
umpire a little courtesy goes to talk to halladay. >> jim: double play ball to short, scutaro to aaron hill, 6- 4-3 3eys a base hit. of the plane in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! 1:12 pm
i'm going to be standing on the same mound as the best major league pitcher. i know tillman's fist games were against verlander and greinke. >> buck: start number 22 for brian matusz. he is a pace ball fan. he knows what halladay means to this game so he is set to match up against him. >> jim: matusz against in his second big league start as he won his big league debut in detroit. he allowed one run on six hits, struck out 5 and walked 3. he will go to work on marco scutaro. aaron hill and adam lind will follow. and the 22-year-old lefty misses low. >> buck: b & t scouting report. he has to establish a better mix of pitches. he got a little bit too happy
1:13 pm
with his change-up and curve ball, too but his change-up is a very special pick, picked up his very first major league strikeout striking out miguel cabrera. >> jim: marco scutaro having a big year for the jays. and there is a strike, 2-1. 32- year-old now in his 8th season out of venezuela. the blue jays signed him, they signed him as a utility player and he has played so well at shortstop he has taken over the everyday job. nine home runs in that leadoff spot for toronto. a little low, ball 32. >> buck: the fastball still sinking a little bit away from scutaro. he is trying to make the appropriate adjustments to get it in the strike zone. >> jim: 3-1 on scutaro leading off the 1st. there is a strike, came inside,
1:14 pm
3-2 i matusz pitchedin only 19 games in the nine nor league when he started. the orioles did not believe he was in pitching is shape so he reported -- long run over for andino and andino gets there and he has it for the out. nicely done. one away here in the 1st. southwest airlines starting line-ups for the toronto blue jays. you saw aaron hill, scutaro, adam lind. alex rios in right field batting 6th. he has a home run in each of the series games. there is a strike 1 to iron hill who is having a big year. all-star season for hill bat can at .290. fourth in the league in home

runs and tied for fifth in rbis and that's to the number 2 hitter. >> buck: we mentioned that aaron hill has established a new record for a blue jays second baseman, erasing the record of robbie alomar. >> jim: there is a bloop there. won't get there. it falls in. >> brian roberts did not start because of a contusion. he said he wanted to play. dave trembley said, as far as the training staff goes, that would not happen. brian says in his career, for a while, this has been the first time he has sat out because of
1:16 pm
injury. >> jim: big surprise he is sitting near the crow. here is what happened yesterday. >> buck: he fouls it directly into that left shin. he would stay in the game, finished that at-bat. he could not answer the bell for his second at-bat. >> jim: adam lind takes it outside. lind is the dh for toronto. he is an outfielder by trade. 26 years old but get most of his at-bats as the designated hitter. fouls it back. the blue jays have a pretty good 2-3 punch, if you will with aaron hill, 26 home runs and adam linbatting behind him with 23 and they bat from opposite sides of the plate. >> buck: and they are high average hitters.
1:17 pm
power hitters and they drive in runs. so that's very difficult to get into the new of the game with the second and third hitters. >> jim: matusz misses outside, ball 2. matusz in his minor league career averaged better than one strikeout per inning. 9.6 per nine inning. hill with a small lead off. that's outside, ball 3. second 3-ball count that mat y has here i i there is a lot more conviction in brian matusz's delivery today than i saw in his first start. it looks like he is focused on what he want to do today and reminding himself verbally. >> jim: here 139-1 to lind, fouled back. >> buck: he has a distinct purpose in his delivery. he is really committed to it, driving right through his delivery. he has very sound delivery. good balance point there, separation, drives out over that front leg and drives the
1:18 pm
fastball down in the zone. >> jim: full count on lind. aaron hill at first. he is running and the pitch is swung on and missed, throw to second base by wieters and he is out. aaron hill out by plenty on a good throw by matt wieters. strikeout throwout double play. none left. we've got a ton of stuff we've gotta pay for. and a few things we want to pay for. on top of it all, we're still trying to put away some money for the future. with the wish list, we can save up for anything we want. and still have enough to cover the day-t0-day. plus, the savings engine helps our money grow. and that's something we need and want. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.

1:21 pm
wells. you see the month-by-month number. august by far the best month in his season. .323 in the month, home home runs, with 54 home runs in the month of august. et cetera looking to have big, big numbers here in this month of august. >> jim: takes a strike, 1-1 the count. huff brings a 7-game hitting streak into today's game. he has five rbis in those seven games. 12 house of representatives, 68 rbis on the year. break finds the corner. so huff down in the count 1-2 with one out and none on. the orioles have not hit for power the last few games. in fact, they have not homered in the last four games. breaking ball low. he checked in time.
1:22 pm
halladay has been incredibly consistent. does not matter where he pitches. that's too high, ball 2. >> buck: six of the home runs he allowed came in two games against the yankees. he allowed three in new york and three here. you can discard the home runs when you play halladay. the yankees have hit 6 of those 14 home runs. >> buck: 39-2 is inside, ball 4. aubrey huff works a one-out walk here. orioles back in camden yards tomorrow to open up a home stand. tuesday, you can celebrate brad bergesen's great start in his big league career with brad bergesen t-shirt. receive a brad bergesen, number
1:23 pm
35 orioles t-shirt. for your tickets, 888-848-birds or online at orioles.com. melvin mora takes strike 1. melvin has a batting average of .250. he has a modest two-game hitting streak going. when this road trip began, the orioles were third in the league in team batting. mora late on that swing. 0-2. and the struggles against the tremendous pitching they have seen on this trip, the orioles are now fifth in the league in team batting. they dropped two spots. >> buck: that's a sub stages drop this late in the season with the team getting so many at-bats but they ran into great pitching in detroit. the same here in toronto. >> jim: ground ball towards the middle, off the glove of aaron hill. that's into centerfield for a base hit. huff goes to third. so by hitting the glove, it
1:24 pm
slowed the ball down and allowed huff to go to third base. >> buck: mora goes right up the middle and gets the ball past halladay. he does a good job staying inside. hill gets a piece of it, kind of slow it is down. that allows aubrey huff to go around second to go to third. heads up piece of base running. >> jim: so melvin gets a base hit. he now has a three-game hitting streak. here is luke scott with the chance to get the orioles the lead. luke is still trying to find that comfortable stance in the approach at the plate. swings through that >> it's 0-1. he might be guilty right now of overanalyzing himself instead of just going up there and being luke scott. >> buck: he has not really picked up the baseball all throughout this road trip.
1:25 pm
he swings like that first pitch before he sees it. you know after the all-star break hitting .136 with no home runs i i he has 18 home runs on the year. he hit his 18th home run on july 11. when he hit that home run, adam jones had 12 home runs. adam has since hit 7 to take over the lead. adam has now 19. hard hit base, hard hit. huff will score. mora is heading to third and rios gets it back n the orioles get on the board first, rbi hit for luke scott and a 1-0 lead. >> buck: we mentioned luke scott has hit roy halladay. this is his 7th hit in 13 at- bats. that cut fastball just got too much of the plate and luke, as
1:26 pm
he always done, hits halladay well and drives in the first run the ballgame. >> jim: so luke picks up his third hit on the trip. there is matt wieters, playing again. yesterday, caught a day game after a night game and he is back in here again this afternoon. still only one down. a chance to get another run in with mora at first and scott at -- with mora at third and scott at first. wieters takes high. >> buck: coming into this game, he had played 48. first 24, batting .134. starting to get more comfortable at the plate. >> buck: i think that's what you want first and foremost, you want to elevate the batting average ant power numbers will come along as you get more confidence and more experience. he has a better look on the pitchers around the league. this is his first at-bat

brian matusz is one of three rookies who met with former blue jay jack morris. he told them make the most out of it. it's not about making money. and they are keeping an eye on roy halladay. they say, i hope he doesn't stay there too long. but they want to keep an eye on him. >> jim: as far as competitor, i can't think of anyone better than jack morris to talk to a group of young pitchers. he was a bulldog. >> buck: he was. four-time world series winner. he was very accommodating to talk to the youngsters. >> jim: millar gets into one deep in left field. pie gets back and that one is going to get out of here. kevin millar hurts his former team, his sixth home run and just like that, we are back even at 1. first home run allowed by matusz in his second
1:30 pm
big league start. >> buck: we have seen this picture before. 2nd inning, blue jays hitters go deep. happened in the first two games of the series and now kevin millar goes deep. flicks his wrist. berken on friday night, he overcame that. tillman yesterday afternoon overcame a two-run rios home run in the 2nd. let's see how brian matusz handles it. >> jim: pitch track presented by northrup grumman, the information system power house. 1-1 game. vernon wells now takes outside. vernon wells 4-for-his last 15. he is having a tough year overall, just 11 home runs. checked swing, outside, ball 3. he has had six 20-home run
1:31 pm
seasons. three separate times, he has driven in 100 runs. this year, he has not found the power stroke. has a big contract. today, he is facing the rookie brian matusz. matusz, big guy, 6'2". 3-12, offspeed witch. >> buck: that's one thing we saw matusz is very comfortable doing. he throws that change-up when he is behind in the count. >> jim: full count on vernon wells with none down. it's inside, ball 4. and a walk to vernon wells. juan samuels, the orioles' third base coach was on the roster for the jays when halladay came up. >> anything that you could take from guys like that could only be a plus for you.
1:32 pm
those guys, obviously, they have the prospect, you know. it's easy to come here than to stay. they have to make that adjustment. all the young players that we have here, they have that. that's something that we have not had in the last couple of years. you know there is something in this group. >> buck: you see the confidence that we have not had before and also they have the stuff. there is something different here that we have seen from the group. >> jim: he had the key phrase in there, it's easier to get here than to stay here as rios takes high, 2-1 i halladay made his big league debut. he was a september call up, september 20th, 1998. and juan samuels pinch ran for the catcher darrendalton.
1:33 pm
now, wieters goes to talk to the pitcher. >> buck: he would give autopsy pinch hit home run to bobby higginson. that would be the only run he would allow in his major league debut, first win. >> jim: popped him up. center of the diamond, who is going to take charge, andino and izturis? andino has it for the out. one down. >> buck: timely meeting with matt wieters as he went to the mound on the 3-1 count. went to the mound, talked to brian matusz, gave him some encourage. on how to get out. we're going to see more and more of that. he's going to take a leadership role with these young pitchers
1:34 pm
and try to guide them as he thinks best. >> jim: edwin encarnacione now. they had a meeting with jack morris as the bylaw jays hohn in order their championship team. jack morris was a great pitcher for the tigers before he moved on in his career. he won here and then won in minnesota. he won four world series championships. the 0-1 pulled to left field. that's a base hit. pie was still at the line, he will get the hop. two on with one down. to give you an idea about the competitor that jack morris was and, hopefully, he got through to the young pitchers when sparky anderson went to the mound to get him out of the game in detroit, sparky had that style that he knew before he was there, he would be gone. he would go to the mound --
1:35 pm
jack morris took the ball and pounded it into the hand of sparky. at the end anderson and broke some bad vessels. at the end of the game, sparky asked him, what the heck are you doing? he said if you don't want the baseball, don't ask for it. after a tough start, tillman pitched into the 7th inning, lifted after 6 2/3. ground ball towards third. this could be two. out at first base. somehow, huff gets his foot on the bag on that wide throw by andino. so the blue jays settle for a run on the home run by kevin millar. we'll head to the third in toronto and a 1-1 game. úúxxxxúú
1:37 pm
. >> jim: 3rd inning tied up. robert andino will start it. he had a feast off roy halladay. >> buck: he would have four hits in total on that day as the orioles came back in the bottom of the 11th to beat the bylaw jays. he had three hits in his three at-bats against halladay. >> jim: halladay went 7, left
1:38 pm
the game with an 8-3 lead and the orioles tied it in the bottom of the 8th. they tied it off young jesse carlson. and then the orioles won it with the 4 at the top of the 11th. that was the nolan reimold walkoff home run game. andino playing at second base today in place of brian robert. pie and izturis will follow in the 3rd inning. it's been an unusual start to this game as each team has batted twice. there a ground ball toward deep short and past scutaro and into left field. that should be an error as he went to plant the glove and the foot. >> buck: robert andino continues to hit the ball hard off roy halladay. he get the set to go to the back hand but never got the glove down. ball stayed down and it went right into left field.
1:39 pm
they have given scutaro an error on that and rightly so even though he didn't touch it. you have to make that play. >> jim: his fourth error opt year. toronto has the best fielding team percentage wise. that's only their 43rd error on as a club. throw to first. aind quo was leaning. he gets back. one thing you can do against halladay -- of course, it's hard to get on, you can steal on him. there have been 16 successful stole on bases. again the throw to first. >> buck: andino looked like he was going to steal. two steals in seven attempts for andino. halladay is a guy who focuses more on the hitter. andino steals the bag, third of
1:40 pm
the year. orioles have the go-ahead run in scoring position. >> buck: robert andino very anxious to have a good jump. he had a jump earlier in this at-bat. takes a peek over his shoulder, ball is well short of the mark. barajas bounces the ball, never gets a good drip of it and that's an easy steal for andino. so pie's job now is to get the runner to third if not in. he takes inside. pie struck out leading off the game. halladay's only strikeout thus far. he is now 1-for-6 on the road trip. broken bat ground ball to second. that will get the job done. hill get it to first and andino moves to third. so pie does his job. >> buck: you have to put it in play. halladay is going to give you a
1:41 pm
chance to put it in play, especially on the ground. when you look at the ground ball to flyball ratio in the american league, rick porcello -- we just saw him with the tigers, 2-point about. halladay over 2. ricky romero who started here friday nightings he, too, is 2-for-1. what about brad bergesen, 1 1/4 ground balls per fine. brad bergesen has established a pretty good pattern with some elite pitchers in the league. izturis down the line, there a base hit. andino scores. cesar izturis looks to juan sam jewels and he pulls up with an rbi double. the orioles get the lead right back for brian matusz and the error very costly on marco scutaro as andino now scored and the orioles are back on top. >> buck: again, its looking for that inside cutter, opened up quickly and dropped the head of
1:42 pm
the bat on the ball. orioles have a one-run lead but izturis 2-for-2 so far. cesar izturis picks up his 19th rbi. and here is adam jones who bounced into a double play toned the 1st inning. so back-to-back innings the orioles have scored on halladay and there is a strike. it's been an unusual start to this game, buck. each half inning has ended with a double play. the orioles first, jones 6-4-3, orioles 2nd. ground ball toward second base. that will advance the runner, izturis, to third. jones out as he hustles down the line. two away. the blue jays ended on the strikeout-double play attempt
1:43 pm
and strikeout ---strikeout-throwout. >> buck: you can anticipate a lot of ground balls from halladay. second half numbers pale by comparison to what he has done in the first half and some of that has to do with the same thing that plague the orioles, playing in the american league with the red sox, now the tampa bay rays and yankees all playing for post-season berths. >> jim: you play those teams who are desperate for wins and they are usually playing well at that time of the year, obviously, if they are in con tension. markakis takes ball 1. nick is 0-for-1, grounded out his first at-bat. halladay in his career has 59 wins against the a.l. east. markakis towards left centerfield. that ball is hit well. vernon wells is on the run and he will get there and make the

catch. so vernon wells cruising to it. orioles get the lead back on an unearned run. untry every day. pa announcer: final boarding call... all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down. grab your bag . it's on™west so our low fares stay low. so we are indoors with the dome closed. yesterday, the game began with the roof open and it closed during the game. here is jose batista leading off. orioles back in front. and he swings through, strike 1. batista, 0-for-his last 6. he has been platooning quite a bit. getting in in there against the left hander brian matusz. checked swing, an appeal to first. he did not go, says adrian johnson. jose batista, one-time oriole, a rule v pick by the birds and was with them for part of a season. there is a line drive to right. that's going to fall for a base

hit. so the blue jays trying to come right back on brian matusz. >> buck: blue jays obviously had a lot of confidence -- they have a lot of confidence with roy halladay on the mound. hitters know that halladay is not going to give up an awful lot of runs so they feel pretty comfortable they can come back and erase this one-run deficit. halladay, sooner or later, is going to stop the orioles. >> jim: there requests the runner. pitch is taken low. wieters had the ball pop out of his hand. he didn't waste any time, took off on the first movement and picks up his fourth steal. >> buck: he took off for second base. scutaro with a little courtesy bunt position and you can see matt wieters never got the ball in his hand as he took it on
1:48 pm
the short hop. he never could find the handle. the bylaw jays are not a small ball team but they doing a sacrifice more than the orioles do. with hall day opt mound, you don't expect -- with halladay on the mound, you don't expect him to give up that many runs. >> buck: it's a good opportunity for scutaro. i don't know if he was bunting on his own but if he can push the bunt up the first baseline or down towards mora, then you have the right handed hitter aaron hill on deck, give him an opportunity with one out and a guy at third. >> jim: he swings at paul 3.
1:49 pm
>> buck: and that makes me believe that scutaro was bunting on his zone. >> jim: they have utilized the bunt more since cito gaston has come back as their manager. there is strike 3. the orioles have the fewest in the american league. the orioles have only sacrificed 9 times. >> buck: it's difficult to sacrifice when your pitcher is giving up an e.r.a. of 5. that ball pulled deep to left field, down the line, that is a home run. it just got over the wall. so scutaro hits it out and the jays come right back on matusz and have a 3-2 lead. 10th home run for marco scutaro. >> buck: you had mentioned how much scutaro had grown into
1:50 pm
this leadoff role since coming to toronto. boy, did he turn on that fastball down and in. that's the ability of the hitter when they have the count in their favor. he hit a two-run home run to retake the lead for toronto. all three runs scored by the jays coming on the two-home run swings by millar and scutaro. and here is aaron hill. he takes high. he singled in his first at-bat and was caught trying to steal. and there is a strike. of course, matusz has to learn about the hitters at this level. the hitters he was facing at the aa level much more anxious, big leaguers are much more
1:51 pm
patient. this is hit deep to left but it is going to hook back foul. >> buck: a change-up just has hill out in front enough to cause him to pull into the seats foul. you mentioned knowing the hitters. at this point, brian matusz just needs to do what he does wait and wait for that scouting report information, try to get into the flow of the game with your pitches and how you get people out. then, as you get more comfortable, then you make the appropriate adjustments. right now, we have not seen him command his fastball. >> jim: 2-2 on hill. still nobody out here in the 3rd inning. weak ground ball back to the mound and he gets it to first for the out. every friday, student night, presented by at&t. all students of any age can purchase a left field upper
