masn brought to you business southwest airlines and by corona and corona light. relax responsibly. nice view outside as some of these sunday afternoon boaters are getting their exercise in. back inside, orioles go to work down by 3. aubrey huff takes a breaking ball for a strike as halladay goes ahead. orioles have scored in each of the last two innings. halladay now has a 5-2 lead. huff, mora and scott. huff looks to extend his hitting streak. huff did not like that ball. that's 1-2. >> buck: that's a tough one, the back door curve ball that
2:05 pm
he throws and he pitched the two-seamer outside and drops that hook on the outside corner. and strike 3 called. that looked like the two-seam fastball, buck, and it came right back into the strike zone for the out. >> buck: talk about how tough roy halladay is against the orioles. last 12 starts, halladay has a record of 9-0. orioles starters took 8 of those defeats. e.r.a. 2.80 compared to 9.76. opponents hitting .250. the orioles are giving up 100 higher points to their batters in toronto but hall day has dominated the orioles and you can see why. he has such great command of all those pitches. >> jim: 142 big league wins. mora fouls it back. you were talking about the a.l. east and the general managers of the respective teams in this
2:06 pm
division. that's one thing they have to look at as an equalizer, somebody they might go after. how do they handle pressure? how do they handling adversity and the hostile environments, especially on the road in the a.l. east? of course, halladay has emerged. he has 59 wins in his career against a.l. east teams. if you are a player, especially if you are acquired after you have established yourself as a big leaguer and you are in the central or the west, that's a different game over here. not everybody can adhere to the pressures and the tough schedule going against the east teams. >> buck: it's really a different game from national league to american league as well. just ask josh beckett who came from the florida marlins to the red sox. tough year for the beckett in his first year. he didn't realize how talented the american league east was. obviously after the first year,
2:07 pm
he had a very effective transition. >> jim: 2-2 to mora, fouled back. that's one of the other things that, as players are coming through the respective farm systems, the player development people have to recognize, what's the make-up of this guy and can you envision him pitching at yankee stadium for a contending team, trying to beat the yankees? can you envision him at fenway park? this year, the orioles have had a tough year on the road. they have won only 18 games and lost 38. >> buck: how many times have we seen the yankees sign free agents who could not take it. many players signed could not handle t dave trem plea loves the character of these young players and even though they get hit around at times, they just bounce right back. another 2-2 to mora is poked foul. >> jim: i would guess that andy mcphail is already trying to
2:08 pm
recognize a top of the line, if not an east pitcher to go after in the offseason either by trade or if one is available on the free agent market, if you can encourage that pitcher to come join this group knowing that, probably sooner or later, this team is going to start moving up in the division. >> buck: i mean you have to have a pegs make-up and have to be a winner, a guy that says, you know, i will be that guy that leads baltimore back to contention. you have to like that talent and you can see the talent here and how the team is coming together. you want to be the guy that will want to be that guy. it will turn around the foreiewns of this organization and -- fortunes of this organization and that's just a 3459der of timing, whether that guy is there. >> jim: 2-2 fouled again. >> buck: you can see everything that halladay has, curve ball, cut fastball, a split change-up
2:09 pm
and mora is doing a heck of a job of battle roy halladay. >> jim: halladay has struck out 2, walked one. the one walk did score. that was huff in the 2nd inning. melvin zincled his first at- bat. he has one of the four hits against roy halladay. here is another 2-2 pitch. this one is popped up. shallow right, hill is out. here comes rios and aaron hill calls and the second baseman has it for the out. two men down. >> buck: it took 10 pitches but roy halladay won that battle head to head against melvin mora. >> jim: halladay has not yet had a thee-up, three dunn inning. he did have a three-batter inning in the 1st when izturis singled but that was erased on the double play. here is luke scott who drove in the orioles' first run with an rbi single. he takes a strike.
2:10 pm
luke has only two extra base hits since the all-star break. both of those hits doubles. hard hit ball to first. right there is millar, goes down on a knee and gets up. halladay has a 3 up, 3 down inning. scott and the birds trail by 2. now that college is a few years behind me, it seems i've got three times the bills i used to. and they're getting in the way of things i'd like to do.

>> jim: time to bring you up to speed with the at&t rewind. >> buck: kevin millar goes deep, and marco scutaro hit a 3- run home run and vernon develops with a two-run home run. for wells, it's number 12 and that was the end of the day for brian matusz i i at&t, the nation's fastest 3g network. at&t, your world delivered. rod barajas will lead off for the jays in the 4th. he is the only blue jay not to bat in the 3rd. the home runs have plagued the orioles all season long, no doubt about that. cito gaston's club, they have players up and down the line-up that can put runs on the board in a hurry with those long
2:13 pm
balls. 141 home runs now allowed by the orioles. that is the most in the american league. brian bass got the final out at the 3rd. so he is here in the 4th. bar jazz, bautista and scud. high pop foul, out of room. the home runs have hurt the orioles pitching, buck, as the runs have come up in bun. >> buck: they have. you look down in august, 14 home runs, 10 of those solo home runs. the home run impact is having fewer and fewer runners on base when you give them up. they're going to give up home runs. they are young pitchers. they are going to make
2:14 pm
mistakes. that's a challenge for younger pitchers to come up. big league hitters are more patient, more selective, don't hit many pitches out of the strike zones. 2-2 on barajas. >> jim: high flyball centerfield. jones has a play. adam ranging over to it. he has it for the out and one away. and let's sends it downstairs for a visit with mark. >> i had a visit with adam. now that he is in his second year in the big leagues, he has had a tour of all the bats. he says friday night, toronto is the toughest. i guess the labatt is flowing freely. you would think boston but, no,

2:17 pm
here is marco scutaro. he takes a strike. scutaro got the lead back for the jays last inning with a two- run home run. there was situation where there was a runner on and nobody out and we were speculating where we he should bun. a couple of pitches later, he got a pitch and hit it out for a two-run home run. >> buck: he had the count in his favor and did a good job looking for a pitch that he could drive and he got it. number 10. when matusz fell behind him 2-0 and then he had could tomorrow in there with a fastball, even though it was in a decent spot, when the hitter has the count in his favor, he becomes a much more dangerous hitter. >> jim: and a base hit up the
2:18 pm
middle. he is 2 out of 3. 7 hits in his last 21 at-bats. he is going to find himself a nice contract in the offseason. on a contending team, he might bat lower in the line-up. but he has the combination of the power that he can bring to the plate, gets on base and he is a pretty good defensive player. here is aaron hill. >> buck: right now, the boston red sox would love to have a marco scutaro the way things have fallen apart at shortstop for them. they have just put jed lowry on the disabled list. he just had surgery on that wrist and he hurt it again. they just put nick green on the
2:19 pm
waiver. they have a lot problems at that position but not as much as the yankees pitchers have been for them. they have been shutout for two games and they run the risk of being swept. ball out of play, ball 3. the red sox are having troubles both at shortstop and with their pitchers. earlier in the year, everyone thought that the red sox had too much pitching. there is a strike as everyone thought with tampa bay, same thing. they have too much pitching. it's a long year, though, and ineffectiveness and injuries can turn that around in a hurry. 3-1 on aaron hill with scutaro on at first and two down.
2:20 pm
2:21 pm
2:22 pm
friday at wendy's, brian bass. the roof is opening so that bad weather of earlier, buck, it's gone. look at the nice sunshine and just what roy halladay need, shadows behind him. >> buck: it's going to be a while. you can see that strip of sunshine as the roof peels back and it will fold over high above the centerfielder. it's going to be a process. matt wieters takes a strike. brad bergesen stopped by the studio. rick and i chatted with him. he has mate a lot of progress in the weeks since the beaning. he will get it to first to get wieters. one down. good to see bergesen coming in without the crutches. he is doing therapy on that leg three times a day, twice with the physical therapist that has been set up through ritchie bancells and he has some pull things that he does.
2:23 pm
you can see the progress he has made. >> buck: they just want to make sure that he is healthy physically before he gets back to his baseball activities. a moment teary delay because one of the bat boy has to run on the field to get alex rios and marco scutaro their sunglasses. whenen they ran out on defense, the roof was closed. now, the sun is a factor so the shade is now on. here is andino who takes ball 1. remarkable technology. you don't even hear the roof moving. andino swings through it. 1-1. >> buck: that's that good curve ball from halladay. we talked about halladay's approach. he throws a cut fastball, a sinking fastball, a curve ball that he has really cut down and made it much more compact and a split fingerred change-up.
2:24 pm
he doesn't throw many change- ups at all. he leans heavily on the cut fastball. he will throw on the cut fastball in on left handers and away from right handers. 2-1 on andino. foul ball. >> buck: you can see his velocity, 828, 89 miles per hour but everything he throws moves. you never get a real good swing on him. he's going to throw a lot of strikes. he has always been among the leader in pitches per innings, fewest pitches per inning, 13 this year. >> jim: 2-2. ball 3. with that control that you speak off, you look at the walk totals, he has had nine starts in which he has not walked a batter and six others in which he has only walked 1. so 15 of his first 21 starts, one walk or less.
2:25 pm
andino get another base hit against roy halladay, that over the glove of aaron hill. so aimed no is on with one down, his first hit. this copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of the orioles, may not be reproduced or transmitd in any form and any account or transmission of this game may not be broad was doubt the consent of the orioles. the next phrase should be, he does not walk many soyou have to earn your way on and he doesn't give up too many hits. so he has the complete package. >> buck: and if you do get on, he has that ground ball that he can make you hit into a double play. here is an i'd yasser arafat cut fastball. it will be 89, maybe 91 but it
2:26 pm
has about a 6-inch break. notit will be a flat break, not like a slider. you approach the ball as you make contact. 0-1 on pie with andino on at first. he is down in the count 0-2. >> buck: i see a lot of similarities in young chris tillman to roy halladay at the time they both came to the big league. halladay threw a knuckle curve ball. he threw off the top high fastballs. very similar to tillman. tillman has a better change-up than halladay had but halladay had a little more velocity. he, too, has that spike curve ball. >> jim: and then a manager named buck martinez sent him back to the minors to reinvent himself and here is what you've got. you have the ace of the staff and one of the best pitchers,
2:27 pm
if not the best pitchers in baseball, not only the american league. >> buck: it was not a one-man decision. gordon ash was involved. many people in the minor league, once he got into the minor leagues but he basically went back and rebuilt his whole approach, simplified it. changed his approach at the mound, bends over, tucks it. slowly hit toward second base. hill, to scutaro, one, back to first and in time. and it is scooped by millar. pie thought he had it beat out. trembley is going to come out for a conversation with adrian johnson but another double play ends an inning. that is the third time today a double play has ended an inning for the orioles. 5-2 toronto. hey mom i need some minutes. i just gave you some at the restaurant. yea i know. i threw them out. they were old so... old! they are rollover minutes. they are as good as new. ya know not everyone gets to keep their unused minutes. and these days we can't afford to be wasteful. saving minutes... ...saves money. yea.
2:28 pm
2:29 pm
i millar stretches in the dirt, pie looks like he has his foot on the bag before the ball get into the love of kevin millar. that's about as close as you can get. ball in the dirt. pie might have beaten it but, boy, it's so close. so three double plays turned by toronto behind halladay short sir scutaroing ramies, or mow tension rallies -- short circuiting rallies, or potential rallies. dave trembley came out and had a mild argument . those are the kinds of ways that you have that you hope might go for you the next time. >> buck: we have the benefit of
2:30 pm
slowing it down, blowing it up, and taking a look at it and we still had a tough time deciding. >> jim: bass has allowed one hit since coming on. adrian johnson is a minor league umpire who is here on vacation relief. he is part of the rotation during the year. this is gary cedarstrom's crew. >> buck: that looked like a pretty good pitch. looks like the breaking ball may have caught the inside corner. brian bass had a little bit of a tough stretch because he had been worn down. he pitched an awful lot. when he has rest between his outings, he has been lights out this year. >> jim: slow roller, bass over.
2:31 pm
the 1 unassisted. one away. >> buck: there was time when he went out there, the last couple of weeks where he didn't have an awful lot of rest. his ball was flat, didn't sink. but, boy, when he goes out there and gets on top of the ball, gets great sink on his fastball, and gets outs, an easy out like he did there with adam lind. >> buck: here is. >> jim: here is millar. he has opinion on base twice, solo home run and a walk and a run scored and bass gets ahead of him.
2:32 pm
three home runs against mats cruz, responsible for all five of the blue jays' runs. that one bounces right past matt wieters back to thescreen. >> buck: and brian matusz never really established his command as the change-up was up. that was the pitch that vernon wells hit for the third home run of the afternoon. wells hit a two-run home run, his 12th of the season. >> jim: 1-2 is pulled foul, headed for the upper deck. millar was slightly out in front of that swing. and there is a look as the dome continues to open. you can see the beautiful blue sky and now sunshine over downtown toronto after a pretty good thunderstorm went through here just before game
2:33 pm
time. 2-2 on millar. and it's bounced toward third, foul. thinking about what you were talking about, after the scutaro home run, 3-2, two out and none on, matusz got ahead of him but he threw back-to- back sliders in the same spot. he was able to foul the second one. and he eventually works the walk. and this time millar serves it into centerfield. these are the kind of things that hopefully the young pitcher will look at and understand what you are talking about that if this is 1-1, this is where you might want to bounce one, and see if they chase as opposed to give them
2:34 pm
the same look: or fastball inside. not only lieutenant young pitchers learn that but so will matt wieters i, that one pitch was not the. >> buck: that one pitch was not the difference, but it led to the walk that eventually led to the wells home run. so millar has a perfect day going, 2 for 2 with a walk, a home run and a single. when halladay, based on what he does, his contract is a bargain based on the standards toyed. when you look at the contract given to johan santana. >> buck: cc sabathia, a.j. burnett. he is under those salaries per
2:35 pm
year. but it's all about the economics of your team and whether or not your salary is a burden and payroll for this ball club has become a burden and vernon wells' contract, the majority of it does not kick in until next year. >> jim: 2-2 the count. there is a bouncer towards third that goes foul. if you are the blue jays and he is one of your star players, which is why he got that contract to begin with, if you consider trading him, the market for him is not what you might think because of the economics going to that other team and then who do you get back to replace him? >> buck: the thing about it is that the entire process of the halladay trade discussions should have been behind closed doors. that is the reality of it. >> jim: 2-2 is popped up. down the right field line
2:36 pm
andino comes over now and in foul ground, he has it fort out. two men down. second time today aimed no has made a -- andino has made a play like that. the blue jays did not come out looking very good when that called happened and then at the last minute, they said, no, we're going to keep him. >> buck: and, too, you put roy halladay through all of that discussion that included the all-star game which was totally unfair. he made the all-star team, started the all-star game and then you get the questions. are you going to get traded? he had mo control over this. of course, he had some control with the total no trade clause. >> jim: well, manufacture in the type of pitcher he is and j. p. ricciardi said he wanted at least an erik bedard type of
2:37 pm
return. andy mcphail set the bar for the star pitcher. you would think that they should be able to command even more than what the orioles got for bedard because halladay is a better pitcher. no disrespect to eric but halladay may be the best pitcher in the game. and he is in his prime at age 32. >> buck: it's all about timing and perception. halladay would make anybody a better contender. knows clubs that are close, you put him in the rotation and all of a sudden, they become a very strong contending ball club. but at the same time, at what cost? you can't disrupt your major league team. ground ball to third. >> jim: mora goes to second for the force play on millar. that ends the inning. a one-out single and a man left. the sun is now out and the orioles down by 3. to ride in the bottom of the plane in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one
2:38 pm
of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! 2:40 pm
3rd inning. >> jim: here is cesar izturis leading off. all the scoring in this game in the 2nd and 3rd innings. cesar with a good game. one player that we did not bring into the contract discussion was b. j. ryan, a contract that crippled the franchise in terms of maneuverability. they gave p j ryan a 47 five- year contract when, at the time he had played out his options with the orioles. the next highest offer on the table was 26 or 27 million from the indians. they went 20 million above that. now he's gone. he has since been released by the cubs as welli. >> buck: obviously, that was tough one. b. j. got hurt. he had tommy john surgery but it didn't look like a prudent
2:41 pm
move at the time. scott rolen has just been depth off this team, too, to reduce the impact of his contract next year. cincinnati picked up most of the contract for this year. >> jim: strike 1 to adam jones who is hitless on the day. the difference in this game is the long balls. the blue jays have hit three for all five of their runs and the orioles who have not homered over the last four games have not yet hit one today. there is a base hit up the middle for adam jones. he is on with a one-out single. so adam now has a four-game hitting streak. >> buck: that's a good sign. that's the pitch that has given adam trouble all year long. he dropped the head of the bat
2:42 pm
on the ball and drove it up the middle. he has covered up holes in his approach all year long. he is working hard to keep his average over .300. >> jim: he now has 1 it 3 base hits. markakis pulls a base hit in right field. so back-to-back singles and the orioles can get the tying run to the plate. markakis now has three-game hitting streak and he has hits now in 19 of the 23 games since the all-star break. 2 on and 1 out. >> buck: that's a good approach for left handed hitters like aubrey huff as markakis jumped on the first pitch. halladay oftentimes will throw the first pitch cutter in on your hands but markakis has the barrel on the ball and drilled it into right field.
2:43 pm
>> jim: here is aubrey huff. what the orioles need to avoid here is a ground ball into double play. they already hit three of them. there is a chopper back to the mound. halladay goes to second, one r one, back to first, off the bag. the throw pulled millar. they would have had huff but the inning will continue. >> buck: good slide by mick markakis as halladay made a wide throw to the bag at second. markakis was all over the shortstop. a little tapper back to the mound. halladay throws it to the shortstop and markakis just with the hard slide eliminate a chance for that double play. runners on the corners. huff and millar at first base. they were good friend as
2:44 pm
orioles teamates. here is melvin mora. and there is a strike. these are the situations that the orioles in the series have not been able to cash in on. they did win 7-5 in the opening game because they had a four- run 6th inning. yesterday was frustrating day for the orioles because they lost in 10 and they had a lot of chances to get runs in on the board and they could not get the big hit. >> buck: another good pitch by halladay. this is what makes him so tough. he will get a couple on mora and pants that outside corner. >> jim: two strikeouts in the game. he has walked one. 0-2 on mora. and there is a ground ball right side and that get through for a base hit. here is jones to score. melvin mora with two strikes, both his hits in the game have
2:45 pm
been when he was down in the count. orioles now trail by 2. >> buck: that's a good at-bat. halladay out in front 0-2. watch how mora covers the outside corner. that's the cutter. mora anticipating something away drives home adam jones who hit a single with one out. >> jim: so jones comes in. mora gets the rbi, his 29th and luke scott comes up representing the go-ahead run. one of these days, luke is going to run into one and hit it out >> it's been too long of a home run drought. that's two days shy of a month. >> buck: that's an awful surprising total of games. luke just has not gotten anything going. it's not fort lack of work. or the lack of thought. he has been looking at video,
2:46 pm
trying to come up with something that's keeping him from regaining that stroke. >> jim: got under that one, pops it up foul down the line. millar is over hoping for a play but that will be back in the crowd. and it ricochets back on the field. luke was leading the team in home runs with 18. now, he trails adam jones who has passed him with 19. you see that one huge series at camden yard against the tigers. that padded his numbers a bit but he certainly was consist at any time during that time. the orioles understand he is a streaky hitter. they just didn't count on this long of a market correction the other way. 0-2 on him. that one stays inside. halladay against trying that
2:47 pm
two-seamer to see if it would come back in on the plate. he got aubrey huff on a strikeout. >> buck: that's the puty of an everyday player is that you have the opportunity to get back on track and turn your trends around but luke has not been able to do that. >> jim: one on, two out. that one is low, ball 2. halladay's last win was july 19th against the red sox. he is 0-2 with a no decision over his last three starts despite the fact that his e.r.a. in that span is 2.88. huff at second, mora at first. two down. 2-2 fouled back. >> buck: good battle here and we have had some good battles
2:48 pm
here. mora had a two-strike hit. luke scott fouls this one back i can't i there have been three hits in this inning, all singles. that's how tough it is against halladay. he makes you work and work and work. 2 on luke scott. and he got him. offspeed breaking pitch that scott swings through. middle of the 6th, it's a two- run game. (announcer on call) off the glass, centered in front... oh what a great move, another great move... he skates in on goal... he scores! unbelievable! it's all over! oh my...
