ellerbee, the rookie free agent linebacker who has been so impressive in training camp. jason campbell, now in his third season as starter for the washington redskins. didn't get much love in the off- season. the redskins were not able to trade up in the draft. so if you can't have the one you love, love the one you're with. >> stan: they're trying to, anyhow. they've got to make up for some hurt feelings because he knew they were going after all those guys. >> gerry: attempt ago throw on first down. he's across the 20. he gets a first down, on the first play of preseason. starting lineups for the washington redskins, betts in the backfield with mike sellers, devin thomas, out wide with antwaan randle el and chris cooley, made the pro bowl the last two years at tight

end. first down from the 22. sellers is only going to get maybe a yard before he runs into ray lewis and taveras gooden. >> stan: stopping the run is what the ravens do best. they were third in the league last year which led them to second overall. remember they played the redskins, they just shut down clinton portis. if the redskins can't run, they can't move the football. because they have to be able to slow down the pass rush with the run. >> gerry: he completes it to cooley. gain of 11 on the play as the redskins will have it first and

10 at their 38. >> gerry: opening up with a little home you want on offense. he was looking for devin thomas. >> stan: it was a good draw by chris carr who came in there in a soft defense. chris carr came in the game and he made a great drop right in front of the intended receiver and campbell had to throw it high. >> gerry: much like the ravens are looking for some playmakers and wide receivers, the redskins come in tonight trying to see if their second year receivers will develop along with jason campbell. kelly and betts in the

backfield. betts will get the carry right side and he is across the 40- yard line. a gain of about four on the play. jared johnson on the stop. but the redskins moving the ball fairly easily in the opening stages. if this is september, you're concerned. it's august, so temper any worries, though i know ravens fans in the year where they've had a transition in coordinator immediately will look for every sign of, uh-oh, this isn't the same thing. >> stan: no question about it. >> gerry: six defensive backs in for the ravens. campbell to throw. he's got a man wide open and he can't get it in his hands, off the outstretched hands of marcus hagans, the former kansas city chief. ray lewis finally applying the pressure as he chases jason campbell to the sideline.

the ravens side stepped what would have been a big play for the redskins. >> stan: the ravens were bringing pressure. there's holes in these zones behind pressure, because they're giving up some zones. if you give it enough time, they've got pressure on him and there wasn't enough time to make a good pass to the wide open receiver. >> gerry: get a look at chris carr as a punt returner. >> false start, number 51 offense. 5-yard penalty. still fourth down. >> gerry: walt anderson our referee for tonight. new punter taking down the fourth down duties for the redskins this year. chris carr will be on the receiving end. former tennessee titan. takes it inside the 20. dances his way across the 25. stretches out close to the 29-

>> stan: kevin barnes, i was watching him, he was so busy looking at the official to see if he was lined up right, they snapped the ball and he hadn't even looked back yet. that gave the defense time to get both guys on him. he never made it off the line of scrimmage. >> gerry: joe starting his second season. has it batted in the air and almost intercepted. back at the 15-yard line. andrei carter tipped the ball. >> stan: that was strange. he threw that ball real low. you would think at a guy his height would get the ball up more, but look how low that ball is. he tried to zip it in there rather than float it over top. alet of the screens, you want to float it to get it over those linemen. he had an on tour raj in front of him, ray rice did. >> gerry: second and 10 for the ravens from their 30. ray rice coming to the near side. and lungs out across the 35-

yard line. philip daniels on the start. starting for the ravens, ray rice and le'ron mcclain. up front, michael oher, chris chester who has had a great camp so far. all eyes on right tackle tonight in michael oher. a third down and 4. flacco to throw, and he has a first down out at the 47-yard line. justin try onon the tackle. a lot of happy coaches. >> stan: good job getting inside. michael oher had a lot to do with that completion. andre carter, got him down, which opened that lane to be able to throw it there.
7:47 pm
good job by michael oher getting the hands of the defender down. >> gerry: ravens working on their first first down of the night. he's stopped shy of midfield by london fletcher. you can't ask for a more consistent player than london fletcher. especially has played in 176 consecutive regular season games. >> stan: he's been a great player for them. kids from a small school in cleveland, ohio, and he's just done a great job for the rams and now the redskins. >> gerry: flacco with a deep drop, has time. has it in the redskins territory, and he's pushed out of bounds inside the 20-yard line. le'ron landry with a touchdown
7:48 pm
saving tackle. >> stan: it was a check down play. you wait for that check down, everybody, all the other defenders are being run off in man, so he's stuck with ray rice man-to-man, all he can do is chase them. you can not let him inside. here's michael oher doing a good job. look how strong he is. he is still pushing down. >> gerry: ravens go to the ground game. rye rice has to kick his way through the crowd. he'll get to the 15-yard line. the ravens find themselves in the heinz red zone for the first time tonight. this is an area they all want to see improvement. >> stan: i like from michael oher already, i like the strength he had in his arms when they got extended. just knocking people to the ground. you like the athletic ability to cut, and they're also pulling hill on those tosses.

>> gerry: talk about a delivery. it's papa johns. usually we're excited about the pizza. we actually get pop it a johns. this is nice. rob is going to be so mad he's down on the field. this is not an actor, we have papa john with us. >> thank you, yes. >> gerry: what brings you to baltimore? >> you're looking for the car we sold 25 years ago to start papa johns. bought it when i was 16, sold

it when i was 21, that was the seed money to start the business. >> roof you've really done well with petes sa. we appreciate the delivery. >> gerry: flacco draw play, he's down to the 10-yard line. that will set up the third down and short yardage. so stan, london fletcher and the defense, the redskins defense giving the ravens offense exactly what john harbaugh wanted, that is a test in the red zone. >> stan: now, can he throw the ball down in the red zone. this is where the justin harpers, the kelley washington's, they've got to be able to make plays. >> gerry: demetrius williams and willis mcgahee in the backfield. under pressure, he tried to get down, but he can't do it without taking a significant

hit. he had to get in between the 1 and the 13-yard line. he ran into willis mcgahee as he was trying to get to kind of a safe spot now where the officials spot the ball will determine whether or not the drive lives or we see steven hauschka for the first time. >> stan: it's too bad he didn't see todd heap in the back of the end zone. he was wide open. >> gerry: i'm a little surprised they're not going bring in the field goal kicker here since you're looking for a new kicker. >> stan: something's wrong with the communication system here. he had to run over, cam cameron had to run. here comes john harbaugh running down to call a time- out. >> gerry: ravens facing a fourth and inches. joe flacco unable to get the play. he'll have time to discuss what he wants to do now. ÷÷
7:54 pm
>> the next step is scoring touchdowns. when we get in the red zone, we don't want to have to settle for field goals, we want to score touchdowns and put pressure on other teams to have to take chances against our defense. the most important thing is winning. we did that well last year, we just have to do it one better. >> ravens going for it on fourth and inches. mcgahee gets the carry.
7:55 pm
he's inside the 5. he's got a first down. and michael oher finishes off that play by piling driving a member of the redskins defensive line and oher's helmet comes off and now the rookie from mississippi, i don't know if this is a statement, but he's been cut above his forehead, he'll have to come to the sidelines where you don't want him when you have a first and goal inside the 5. >> stan: that's where you really want to test him. it's the second time his helmet has popped off. he's just, he's playing now. this is a super bowl for him. >> gerry: mcgahee off the right guard pushes the pile for maybe a yard, if that. it will be second and goal from just outside the 3. >> stan: and that 4th and 1, you got a big block out of mcclain, too. if you get big blocks out of your fullback f. the fullback can get to that middle
7:56 pm
linebacker, your defense really has not done the job. they have to keep him free on fourth down and 1. >> gerry: 11th play of the opening drive coming up. second and goal from the 3. flacco brings mason in motion. play action, flacco will heave it out of reach of everybody in the back of the end zone and the ravens will face third and goal. joe flacco doing a nice job that time of reading what john harbaugh wants him to read and that is when it doubt, throw it out. >> gerry: first quarter at m t bank stadium. 6:23 to play in the opening quarter. no score yet, but the ravens threatening on third and goal from the 3. ravens made it on fourth and
