first 4, or actually, got the first guy out and walked 3 of the next 4 hitters and they took advantage of it. >> gary: 2-1 on the way. rivera way out in front of it and a 2-2 count. great pitch. >> jim: the fastball count to a guy with 3 doubles. he's hit a breaking ball up the middle. he's sitting fastball and he didn't pick it up. best i've seen him swing. he reminds me of maldonado. he is staying through ball with the best of them. >> wants time out at the plate and gets it. hitting the ball very hard. he's getting the extra base hit for the season and along with that of course, come to rbi for rivera. he has 75 of them on the year. he has 12 home runs in his last 41 games and 36 rbi. that's red hot. >> gary: 2-2 to him. rivera had to wait.
8:31 pm
izturis in front of it. great flip. nice play! major league double play by all 3 izturis getting to it. roberts relaying it and huff on the pick 83 they have -- >> jim: they had more time, the ball hit sharply. part is getting to it. sharp hit ball. what a great angle to show you how quick izturis is. nice pick by roberts. there's that ball that just gathers some dirt on the way into the glove. >> gary: clears the bases, 2 down in the fifth. kendrick a single, rbi ground ball out good d. >> jim: only 81 pitches formatiz -- for matusz. jones going to get it to cut it off does. here's the turn made. good play by adam. that holds kendrick to a single. with 2 down in the fifth
8:32 pm
inning. >> i think that howie kendrick convinced matusz both base hits are on curveball he can hit the hook. scorched that after hitting one hard to left field. may have to go to a different plan there. >> gary: there's robb quinlan, quinlan delivered a single the last time up with a rbi, he's always popped out. 2 down. wieters block that's one. quinlan had only 6 starts in july but hit .3 50 when he had the chance. wieters will go out and talk to brian matusz. >> you look at quinlan he reminds me of mickey hatcher. they both choke up. mickey played 12 years. in the press room was broadcasting with the twins when mickey painted himself
8:33 pm
green and didn't realize your skin was green. that's a base hit. markakis, quinlan on. >> jim: he's running around the field and they had to take him to the hospital. >> gary: nothing like covering every pour in your, pour in your body. he said he was something. >> 2 down. joanne gel a -- joe angel a big golfer. the only guy he played with who drove 2 par course. >> line drive. >> gary: here's gary mathews. has to work his way around this one. 9 hits on the board. runners at first and second. there's two down. matthews applied out and grounded out -- flied out and grounded out. hitting in the number 8 spot. matusz with a chance to get out
8:34 pm
of this inning without further damage even they there's been 3 hits in the inning. and in the dirt, and a 1-1 count. gary matthews junior will come out of lineup tomorrow. torii hunter will be back. he's on the way, probably here at the ballpark now. supposed to get in around 4 or 5:00 around the west coast. he will play tomorrow. >> jim: he's done a nice job. there's torii hunter. he's here. a groin problem has kept him out of lineup. guererro was out, though didn't miss a beat. deep bench. 1-1. a bad cut on a good pitch. a wave at that one as he was fooled. >> jim: brian matusz, if you want to rate his pitches tonight, the fastball has been good, the change-up has been good.
8:35 pm
the curveball a little bit of trouble. but the walks, 3 walks in that third run, the 5 run 3rd inning and they all scored. >> gary: wieters got hit. wieters started up as though he would make a throw and got caught by the bat. and matt felt that one. nope. it's the ball. >> watch this on the backsw right in the rib cage. on the left side. he's smiling at matthews. he does not mean it. but he's smiling [ chuckle ] thanks for hitting me with the bat. >> gary: appreciate you doing that. those ribs were on the line anyway.
8:36 pm
>> and the count stays at 1-2. there are the two base runners kendrick and quinlan. math use has worked the -- matthews has worked the at bat. matusz got the double playground ball given him the two out in the inning. runners on going on the last pitch. 1-2 not going here. the breaking ball is there for strike 3. brian has 6 strike out in the ball game. no run, 3 hits two left on base. 5-1 angels. there's an app for that. or, you'd like to figure out the metro, there's an app for that. or you'd like to send a postcard home, there's an app for that too, because there's an app for just about anything. only on the iphone.
8:37 pm
round of miller lite. (announcer on call) ...here it comes... watch this now... got it! my goodness! now you have seen it all. (announcer) that's what greatness tastes like. triple hops brewed. great pilsner taste. miller lite. taste greatness. 56 if of a session, dave trembley had a g and a session. he was asked if he bass
8:38 pm
satisfied with the season in nobody can be happy with the record, that's not why we're in the game. i think the individually the performances of our young group, you saw tillman last night, you will see matusz tonight, the way that nolan and matt wieters performed. felix aglimmers and at his ability. i am satisfied with the environment. >> gary: interesting comment at the end that you heard. because dave trembley has not been given the option pick up for next year. he has an option on the contract for another year as manager and andy has made clear he will wait to the end of the season, maybe the last weekend, maybe beyond before he decides whether the orioles will pick that option up and dave will be back next year. what he wanted to avoid is that swoon that comes for the last
8:39 pm
11 years for the orioles. you look at what we're talking about. the winning percentage after the all-star break golf all of these managers -- for all of managers, miller got the closest to .500, they have not been there. it's been really bad finish shall. so, what andy was hoping not renewing the contract early would give trembley and the players something to work at. >> jim: the players like dave trembley. >> in the gap. that will go on the wall. brian roberts will add to his doubles total as the league leader picks up another one leading off the 5th inning. >> jim: 44th double. so simple for him when you're gifted. fastball away, maybe ends up in the middle of the plate. he says that fine with me. right there, rivera can't get
8:40 pm
it. not fleet of foot in left field. my point about trembley. if you like him. win games for him. and he said that he was happy, talking about dave trembley with the process of young players. >> yes. dave said that as well. and andy said that there's been a fall off by the veterans they didn't expect. >> gary: jones towards 2nd base. kendrick ranging, he will get the runner moved. roberts goes to 3rd base. i think one of things that's interesting, is that with andy saying what he's said, he said to the players, stand up for your manager. show me, show me what you're willing to do for the manager. because if you produce and have a good finish seemingly the option will be picked up. if you don't, then there will be some question about that. at least that would be the
8:41 pm
perception. and for the veteran players. they are the ones as jim says. they have to make the decision. the kids will play hard because they are here and like the. the veterans have to decide to grind this thing out knowing that what they are doing is try to be spoilers for much of the final 6 week -- weeks. are they willing to do that? >> jim: that's a point will taken. >> down the 1st base. a foul ball. runner at third, one down. the orioles chip away and get at laxy and the angels -- lackey and the angels. >> usually when you're down by 4 runs you don't think about getting the runner over. they will play everybody back. if you hit a ground ball other than back to the pitcher, you will get another run. you will be within 3. you were a couple inning down by 5. >> gary: 0-2 on the way. high fastball. lackey rared back to fine one
8:42 pm
there and gets the strike out. >> jim: the difficulities for the players can you focus. we've seen things. losing track of outs and counts and stuff like that. this is tough for even players like nick that have been around three or four years or huff who's trying to make, this a audition for free agency here. >> first up to 3rd base. foul territory. figgins. he's done it. no runs, one hit, no errors and a base runner left. on a 5-1 lead for the angels.
8:43 pm
8:44 pm
 >> jim: first homer off me. low curveball. down the right-field line. >> gary: we're proud of you. >> jim: thank you. that's why he comes over and shakes my hand. boy could he hit. he could do everything. he was a gifted young player. had chronic knee probables but
8:45 pm
a marvelous hitter. >> gary: 0-1 on the way. retired his number. so he will come here and join another. >> jim: the 1st base coach. we'll see him next weekend. you may not. you may not be there, but i'll see him in chicago. >> gary: 1-1 on the way. it's fouled back. mathis up. matusz has given up 3 walks they scored. he has 6 strike out. 5 runs 9 hits but he's still in there, and only that one inedge -- inning. >> you learned a lot about him. a lot of young pitchers, 14 months out of college, they give up 5 runs they won't throw it over. >> gary: down the line. could be trouble. and is. markakis will bare hand it. that's a base hit. mathis is on, a lead-off single. the 10th hit for the angels.
8:46 pm
>> jim: nobody playing there. you're standing on the mound. make a good pitch. you jam them and you know it will fall. the good news it didn't go for two. when you want that extra romer. a good softball out fielder they give you. >> gary: the 10th player. chone figgins doubled the last time up. he's walked and scored. 5-game hitting streak for figgins upping his average to .304 on the season. the pitch is looped to right field. markakis didn't know he was in. tried the force at second. can't get it there in time. a couple looping singles start the 6th inning by mathis and figgins. >> jim: have we seen any of the guys over swing. quinlan has done it twice. kendrick has two hits.
8:47 pm
guererro, he walked with the bases loaded. that's hard to believe. and they have all had good at- bat and that's what the angels are about. that's why they are what they are. >> why they lead the league. the bullpen active again. getting up to throw again the hendrickson. this is the third time he's been up to throw in the bullpen. rick will come out the draw time for hendrickson and time for brian matusz as well. 11 hits off matusz in the ball game, compare that to the first two outings that he had the start he had the victory in detroit. gave up 6 hits and a run over 5 and the toronto game 5 runs on 7 hits in 2 2/3. this is in the middle. numbers wise for brian matusz. we'll see how scioscia plays it. a guy with 15 bunt base hits.
8:48 pm
26 infield hits. he can handle the bat. the orioles would pop in at first and mora at third. aybar with a bunt base hit. not a sacrifice but a straight bunt. >> gary: he has 8 sacrifices to go with the infield hits. first and second, nobody out. drops it toward 2nd base. huff has to backhand it. roberts cuffers. good sacrifice. aybar moves them up. mathis to third and figgins to second. >> jim: so much easier to sacrifice when you can bunt, we know he can do that. number 2 you have speed to bases. even mathis as a catcher runs well. he got it down, made huff field it. aubrey's only play was to roberts. we saw this all night last night the orioles had the advantage over the angels and playing the infield in during the middle innings. not what you want to do.
8:49 pm
you have to do it because you're trailing by 4. >> gary: bobby abreu, second best runner in scoring position number in the league getting another shot at it. second and third, one away. abreu with a big cut. he had trouble figuring out malts -- matusz. he's struck out twice. had a runner at third and struck out. a runner on at first in the 1st inning and struck out. >> jim: reminds me. i asked derek jeter do you look for breaking balls. he said no, then i swing on them regardless of where they are. matusz make a great pitch. he swung at it anyway. >> gary: 0-1 count. abreu again. that's the one he can't find and it goes to 0-2. >> jim: you go back the earlier in the ball game in the 5-run inning. it turned around he struck him out the first time on one of the better curveballs all year
8:50 pm
and couldn't get it over the second time through the order. that was one of the 3 base-on balls in the 3rd inning when the angels got 5 runs. >> gary: only one out he would love to pick up the strikeout here. mathis not a speedy runner at third. he stayed with it and got him. ayou abouty all night long has been stare -- abreu staring at matusz and saying what is that. i can't hit it. >> jim: again, just 3 quality breaking balls. you don't have to throw a strike when you're ahead and that's what he did. >> gary: and that will be it for the orioles starter. with run you're at second and third and two down. guererro coming up. for brian matusz a new strike out high. he has 7. brian in his debut will be greated warmly as he leaves even though he trails 5-

no home runs. 3 home runs in toronto. take away the 3 walks pretty presentable outing. they won't have scored a lot of runs. cla meredith will come in. the a's coming in earlier in
8:53 pm
the week. winning 2 out of throw gave up a bunch of runs. he's a sinker baller. sinker-slider guy. 5 earned runs in the 3 inning pitched. >> gary: he's been a workhorse. this is his 11th appearance for the orioles and his 36th appearance over all. and he faced guererro, runners at second and third. this is a big at bat. guererro singled, lined out and walked. mathis a runner at third and figgins at second. and if guererro can get one or both of them in it changes the ball game. >> jim: this is what relief pitching is about. do have an open base. it's about inherited runners you can keep them from scoring. there is 2 outs. bad thing is guererro is at the plate. >> gary: nice pitch. bore in to hands on that one. >> jim: and then, he has that
8:54 pm
sinker that will dive down and in to the righties and the breaking ball that if he locateds it well can make you look silly sometimes. >> gary: guererro inside. the right handers hit .364 against cla with the orioles. left-handers .238. last outing was a tough one as he gave up 5 earned runs in 3 innings in the two games jim was talking about. 2-2 delivery and he hit him. guererro will go down as meredith tried to come back on the fist and got too far inside. >> jim: you hit guererro after getting ahead of him and he doesn't have a chance. trying to get somewhere with the left leg and plunks him above the hamstring. then he smiles. he couldn't get out of the way. this guy came into the game hitting.throw 50 with runners -- 350 with runners in scoring
8:55 pm
position. had the bases loaded once, had a rbi single. hit into a double play and flied out. has the bases loaded again. mathis, figgins and guererro. the inning gets more important now with the bases loaded and with two down on contact everybody be running. it's a strike and he can't believe it. it ended up in the glove away from the plate. did it cross the plate on the way there? apparently so. >> looks like it did. >> gary: meredith with the 0-2. a big strikeout couple hits, bases are left loaded it remains a 5-1 angels lead.
8:56 pm
8:57 pm
 >> amber: the ways sense ev minor league first baseman john hughes shall he's a left handed hitter who'll go to triple-a norfolk. also update on brad berges, had a cat scan, good news it can clean. he will take to the training staff about starting a throwing program soon.
8:58 pm
that's great new. he was happy today after he got cleared to be able to start throwing and he wants to do it right away. >> jim: he says he felt better. he's walking better. they were going to back you off anyway. your inning total would be too high. he said he's missed 16 days. he hopes he does not have to go into a throwing problem. i said you're 23, you were pitching light out. it will take a week to get back. >> gary: reimold up, leading it off. he's grounded out twice, orioles in the bottom of the 6th inning trailed by a score of 5-1. lackey took something off that and got him. 4 strike out for lackey. two in a row. >> jim: and what you saw last inning was when he needs an out. he can go get it. this a veteran pitcher 98 wins, 63, he is very direct to the
8:59 pm
plate. weight on his front side. throws maybe two or three inches across his body. great momentum. again, going to, until they sign him a free agent. he will be sought after. i don't know if he will get 163 million was it for sabathia. i can't believe that would happen. he will get a lot of offers. he hails from texas. the only team he's struggled again is the rangers. >> that's the story of the angels the only team they struggled against, texas the team that pounds on the door in their own division. against texas they have gone i think 3-9 on the season against them. it's really interesting, they are 3-9. this team would be 15 and 19 against their western division. that's the angels. and yet, they have been able to beat up on the other division to hang on to a
