the orioles won the first game. last night they lost. your world delivered. today jeremy guthrie is sent to the mound. he is 7-12. a left handed pitcher for the orioles. beautiful day for baseball. hello, everybody. >> tom: davis. welcoming you to the studio right above the field. cruz told me the night before, are they improving? >> you know something, there is no way to tell right now, tom. i would like to say yes they are, but the win loss record doesn't indicate that with any one of them. what i look for, for the rest of the season, i'm not going to evaluate these guys on their win/loss. berken has two wins on the season. i can't evaluate them. what i want to see when they go out to the mound, i want to see the way they handle adversity. this is what i look for, going into next season.
1:02 pm
the orioles aren't going anywhere, they are not going to play in a playoff or have a wild card berth so far this season. what i want to do, every single young guy that comes in here to pitch, i want to see the way he pushes hitters around the battedder's box. what he has learned about what they are capable of doing as compared to what the pitcher on the mound is capable of doing. when you need to pitch inside, you need to play hard ball. that is what i want to see these guys doing. when they get kicked around a little bit, how do they turn it around and come back the next inning and deal with the guys the second third and fourth the course of the ballgame. that is when i'll tell you there was improvement made. i know they can pitch. sooner or later it is going to happen. they are the toughest division in all of baseball and they are going to learn how to be tough in order to get a good plus from me. >> tom: you are wound up today. it is a special day for nick and for brian. for more on that let's go to amber. >> amber: tonight there is an

opportunity for orioles fans to not only interact with nick markakis but to help out charities while they do it. both are holding charity events after the game. brian roberts is holding his brian roberts baseball bat. kids will buy tickets, come into the zone, play games, have fun, have a chance to hang out with nod not only brian but other orioles as well and the proceeds with that event will go to the university of maryland children's hospital. brian has been giving to that hospital for many years now and now nick markakis, he and his wife, christina, have started the right side foundation. this is their first big event. tonight they will be holding over at patterson's market in canton a run and walk. that event is open to the public right now so people can register. we'll tell you how to do that in just a moment. but first, hear from both of these guys. >> it is such an amazing night. but for us, it is really the times that we get to go to the

baltimore community. that event is sold out. nick markakis, his event is still open to the public. they would love to see you down at patterson park. it starts at 6:00 p.m. tonight. show up early if you are walking up to register, you don't have to be a good runner, you can do the one mile fun walk if you want to. go to right side foundation.org for more information. i know they are expecting a lot of people to welcome back up and they would love as many fans at patterson park as possible tonight after the game. tom? >> tom: amber will be reporting during the game and on the post game show. time to look at the angels lineup. tori missed more than 30 games with a groin injury. juan rivera, nine runs on the road. how about sean? most ever career bases by an angel dating back to the beginning of time. >> they are going to have to find a way to slow him down. for the orioles have to pitch

out on him, it is going to give them another thought and he doesn't get so many good jumps. we have for make a, effort from the pitchers to make sure to hold the ball longer make him service and slow down the jump. it is the only way you are going to get a shot as throwing him out. he is putting himself in scoring position and something the orioles cannot afford to give away easy stolen bases and let the opposition the angels get that much of an advantage over us. we have got to play some tougher defense and that is part of it. >> a lot of people will be coming after tom. >> rick: tom, he is a good contact hitter. he was given an ultimatum he better start alleteing, this guy has lit it up. he started against the orioles and all they wanted to do was throw him fast balls and let him get hit. >> tom: the type five or six are the same but the bottom three

are different today. tie wig beginton, third and seventh, chad moellerer will be the catcher. brian roberts last 20 games batting .346, rick, that is an impressive number. >> rick: brian roberts has been streak can i this year. but since the all stay star break, he has been consistent all the time. what shows it is he is using more of the field than he was the first half of the season. in the gap in left center and right, you leave something off speed middle in, brian robertson is going to turn that thing around. the little guy is like if he dry afrom the red sox. you can't fool around with a lot of people. they can hit the ball out of the ballpark. i like to say it because brian roberts is not your big, homerun

logo -- you have masn there on your logo. the orioles get this young guy to first base, now they have three. you think about michael aubrey, and also brenden snyder. >> pretty soon we are going to have it shirt tuesday here. they are stocking up. they went after this guy. usually a player to be named is a guy from the lower levels of the minors, but they specifically we want after him. he had good numbers. hit .313 in aaa, and andy calls him a late bloomer, he really likes his bat and this really is insurance here. if they don't resign aubrey hoff, if they let him go as a free agent, they have him. you have michael ab brea, now john hughes, maybe hughes is the guy that holds down to florida in spring training or he is good enough he takes the job.
1:12 pm
we don't know. they may pursue a first baseman in trade or free agency but this is another bat. apparently he is fairly legitimate and good enough they had to send tampa money to complete the trade. >> tom: there is a new guy running around the outfield out there. i think his name is pie? he resembled that remark. he has gotten himself back into the mix again. he has showed a lot of improvement. what are your impressions? and does he have a job back with his ball club again? >> they just signed their draft pick coffee, who would have gone really well with pie. felix may never be the superstar, but his spikes are in the hall of fame. you know, dave said he wants to get him more playing time in left field. in part because they want to continue to evaluate him.
1:13 pm
also with the ailments, i think felix may have found his niche. he is hitting .310 as an outfielder. it is okay to appreciate what he is bringing to this club right now. as dave trembley said, he injects a lot of energy in the lineup. he raises the value, maybe another team takes a look at him. i'm not saying they are looking to move him, but he is not going to magically come up with another minor league option. you could still end up with a roster crunch. if he is playing well is his value goes up, maybe he gets dealt somewhere else. >> how about brian? he made three starts, one and two. after the game, he got out of that five run-inning he felt the most comfortable he has felt in the big leagues. >> i talked to him today. i said what are the biggest adjustments you have had to make? going to the majors? the first first thing he talked about is the strike zone. it is not the same here.
1:14 pm
he gave a perfect example. you saw it last night with abreu. he didn't get the call. 3-1 a fast ball on the black. did not get the call. that is a strike i anywhere else. he is not used to have that strike zone that tight. he conceded abreu is a proven major league hitter. he is going to get that call and also relaxing more. after that third inning he penalty his comfort zone for the first time. he was his most relaxed. he can't recall falling behind another hitter. from that point on they got a couple hits. abreu comes up again three straight, perfect sliders, three swings, three misses to strike him out. he knows he has the stuff to pitch here. he is convinced of it. he belongs here. he was in his comfort zone in the easter league. this hnothing else to prove here. he is glad he had that chance to establish that comfort zone and prove it here right now.
1:15 pm
after that third inning, things really clicked for him and he does trust his stuff. i love talking pitching with this kid. he is 22. it is like talking to maddox, the way he breaks down a game. he has great stuff and also up here. he is a very bright kid. he knows how to pitch. i think he is going to be a number one starter here. he struck owe pray. >> ended up with -- struck out abreu. >> the balls are being looped but he needs to get the strike calls. if you have a fast ball on the black, you would have said something to the umpire if you were catching. you would have said something. >> you have got to talk to them. there is no doubt about that. the kid it is obvious he has an idea what changing speeds is all about. he has a good relief point. he'll catch on after awhile. >> masn sports.com check it outside. you'll enjoy it. following his mind there. whether we come back, we are going to look at another
