sunday, here's howie kendrick. guthrie had a 31st pitch inning. kendrick dhing in the number 9 spot. there is a strike. you were talking about when you played for the angels, you better do it the way up or you'll be replaced and kendrick is a good example of that. he was already established in the big leagues toward the middle. roberts was back in. one down, he was underachieving, so they sent him back to the minors for a refresher course. >> jim: monday august 31-wednesday september 22nd great aseats are available for each game. tuesday september 1 is ollie's bargain night. 888-848-burger orioles.com. the reason they could do that is a guy that came into the

season. .306 lifetime in the big leagues. it is good to to have a defense. they could put his tourist in from and move aybar. a lot of times the young hitters, kendrick could be as good as he was in the minor leagues. >> jim: at the end of the day you better have good coaches, you better sign good players, you are going to have to have players to howie's credit we want back to the minor leagues, worked on back in the big leagues, a chance to go to the post season. >> jim: a generous call but guthrie will take it 2-2. >> jim: it wasn't the double is how they got to the 3-2 fast

ball. 0-2 missed with three pitches down the double play. he came back to get him here is the first strikeout. a two man out. it is about location and getting ahead of hitters, there is a good good curve ball. got four pitches. doesn't always use them. at the end of the day, i don't care who you are. you better stay out of the middle of the plate. does roy halladay pitch in the middle of the plate? off the bat of izturis. andino taking charge and he has it for the out. a very efficient inning for jeremy guthrie. angels go down three up and three down. - you play to win the game. - then you? yes, yes, agreed. guy. lived to be 100 imjim i wonder if graci was a big baseball fan? >> jim: you are low asking high fast ball, couldn't get your speaker out? >> jim: apparently not. couldn't get burns out, either. >> jim: very impressive. scott against sean o'sullivan in the second. number three draft choice. >> jim: he was rated coming into this season by baseball america as the fifth best prospect in the angels's organization. the projection was he would spend the entire season in the double a. he is over but runs out of room. he has pitched in only 82 minor

2:08 pm
at bats you want right there. there you go. scott, select company. trying to stay back. use the whole field. 3-1 the count. every time he struggles i remember what paul o'neal told me about hitting the ball to left field. he said there is gold out there. stay on the ball. and especially if you are as strong as luke is. a strike at the knees. 2-2. that is what we see the good hitting teams do. they are hitting well, because that is a pitcher's pitch. i have another strike to deal with. they get back into the count. now they go to the way most
2:09 pm
teams try to get luke scott out. has the ability to hit any fast ball to any part of the field. strong to left tent tore field, trying to get him out with curve balls up and in. high fly ball right field. that has a chance back it goes. it is off the wall and in play, just shy of getting out of here. luke scott at second base with a two out double. >> jim: there is how strong he is. all he does is drop the bat on the ball. didn't have a great sound coming off the bat. just right there, boom. short swing. you can see that right elbow stay tucked into his side and that gets the bat head and the path of the ball exactly where you want to. so luke scott gets a base hit. only his third on this homestand. after going 11 for 22 in wrunners in scoring position they went something like 1 for

2:11 pm
chance. >> jim: pretty good swing. >> jim: i have that same baseball america they talked about he was one of the elite prep pitching sensations. and then, just lost a lot of velocity. he is still around 92 to 94. get a lot of guys out if you have a good change up on a curve ball. then again, the 8 ball last year you mentioned really didn't get the pitch much. went 16-5. at least he took advantage of being in proball. >> swinging a breaking ball that is low. >> that is pretty amazing, when you think about it. sean o'sullivan last year the entire season in california in eight ball. signed late last year after being drafted. he couldn't even pitch because the season was back in. he starts this year in the
2:12 pm
carolina league. dominates there in aa. they are both high draft picks madison the first round and o'sullivan in the third round. probably would have gone higher, except for the senior year. he gets the pitch at san diego state, university of san diego. >> tony would have liked that. >> yes he would have. >> would have been a 1-2 punch, right left combo. >> he was drafted by the angels out of high school. but he really wanted to go to school the angels did not come up with a number to entice him to give up scholarships so he went to the university of san diego, pitched three years and came to the orioles. >> the orioles had scouted him as a high school player as well and he was more than on their radar all three years at the
2:13 pm
university of san diego 2-2 on wiggington. scott at second base. checked swing it is low, ball three. luke scott double to keep the inning going. it is a full count. you have to be somewhat careful here, wiggington with one swing and you see chad moellerer not having a lot of it back this year. there is a 3-2. he got him. off speed breaking pitch. wiggington swings through it. second strikeout for o'sullivan. beautiful day at camden yards 3-0 angels.
2:15 pm
it's time to bring you to speed with the at&t rapid rewind. >> jim: jeremy guthrie they get to him early on. lee base hits and a walk as they take advantage of extra base hits. nice slide by juan rivera around the tag of chad moeller and then the good guthrie. when he is good he is awfully good. when he is bad this year he has been worse than we'd like. at&t the nation's fastest network your world delivered. here is bobby abreu rivera and morales will follow.
2:16 pm
guthrie retired four consecutive batters. 30 pitches in the first nine in the second. so he is getting his average down to the 17 for an inning he has averaged on the year. bobby abreu two out of nine in the series. equipment jim he this ball to the centerfield close to adam jones way out there and it is gone. abreu goes deep on guthrie again. twice in the start on july 2nd in anaheim and a solar shot here in the third. change ball change up fast ball in anaheim and a hanging curve ball. again it is not a mystery. he is a tough enough guy that is why he is a good hitter. that is just a curve ball. the massive pitch you can see right there belt high out over the plate. looks like it skills right off the top of the wall and kicks
2:17 pm
toward the ivy. there you go. 4-0. the information systems is now hiring get online at meet ngc.com/i s. >> that will do it. 28th homerun jeremy has thrown. you think this ball has got to hit the top of the wall and come back and then right off the top of the cushions. an inch or two lower, it would have been a double. how did you describe that? belted to center? one up. it is all about leverage for hitters. you talk about why you like the pitch down and the strike zone. it is the farthest the hitter has to reach. really this guy can blow it's way for pitcher test your ability to get your arm out in front. same thing with a hitter. you test your plate coverage your balance. usually you lose a lot of
2:18 pm
leverage. done mean you don't get hits, it is really what pitchers trying to get the hit tore do. >> jim: andino waits on the hop. one down in the third inning. on sunday, august 30th, don't miss american classics day here at the ballpark. against the indiansengy $1 hot dogs and $1 sodas. like that gentleman, that is a good day for you. $1 highlights. >> i'm flying in. >> you would be all over that. >> yeah i'm not working that weekend. >> come on in i'll leave you a ticket. >> thank you. >> kendry morales on a high fly
2:19 pm
ball to left. ryan moeller is there guthrie in his career has now allowed 80 home runs. there is a bit of a myth guthrie has heard in camden yards. of the 80 home runs, he is allowed 41 here and 3 million dollars road starts. so it is almost exactly down the middle. >> jim: the record is better at home this year and the era is much lower even though it is going up a little bit this afternoon. three wins six losses. hunter light coming back. came in a situation where there was this perfect low and away fast ball. he hit the fly ball with a runner at third and less than two outs, got an rbi in his first at bat after missing 32 games. high fly ball to left. he got under it. he goes back, now comes in and
2:20 pm
he will put it away ask that ends the inning. so the homerun gives the angels another run, molar andino and roberts are coming up for the orioles in the third. i've never been all that great with my money. probably because i've never had much. but now that i'm making more, it's time to be a little smarter about how i manage it.. with the calendar, i can schedule all my payments. and when funds are low, danger days help me stay out of the red. i can also transfer money with just a click and a drag. so maybe i'm better with money than i thought.
2:21 pm
2:24 pm
andino takes a strike. so if they ever get football back in anaheim, he sean o'sullivan can start at middle linebacker. he is a big, by guy. 230 they list him says. he looks a lot like his catcher. maybe a little bit call colter. andino fouls it off. again part of being successful, can you repeat your delivery? pretty simple. break over the knees. great extension right there. telethat ball down and away. allowed only one hit so far. breaker ball drilled to center field. hunter a long way to run.
2:25 pm
all the way to the wall. andino with the double. especially with one out. you want to get to third base. hunter has won eight consecutive gold gloves. there is your hanging curve ball you described. they are playing them around. obviously not the pitch. there you go hanger. there we go. think three and he does. but again, hunter gets to it quickly, plays perfectly and eases it in. the orioles second hit, both hits are doubles. scott and andino. here's brian roberts, chance to get the orioles on the board. brian leading the american league in doubles. he has six doubles during his current game winning streak. six of the ten hits during the
2:26 pm
streak, two base hits. roberts fouls it back with the splits. a left handed batter right handed batter's own o'sullivan. so why is that? >> mike the pitching coach for the angels said he doesn't have a breakable. andino, another pitch. his fast ball runs left to right. a two seamer runs into rights. brian roberts started the game with aybar made the great play, poked it into left field and aybar made as great a play as you can see.
2:27 pm
>> jim: two on. roberts robbed by erick aybar leading off in the first. andino second base, that was fouled back. >> jim: you have the two best teams with runners in scoring position. the angels at .09. brian well over .300. the difference, of course is that the not only do they hit well with runners in scoring positions but they also hit over .300 as a team. other night on friday they had one guy he was at .297. eight guys over .300 on their roster. >> jim: he pulls it deep and foul off the facade of the upper deck. >> jim: six doubles in his last four games. the only way you can hit that ball is to be short to him. it was a good 0-2 pitch up and
2:28 pm
in. boy that is the big difference i think if anybody remembers brian roberts when he came off that front shoulder kind of chicken wing late to the ball, boy has he made a great change with the help of terry crowley the hitting instructor. the swing is much more solid now. >> jim: ryan has 38 hits since the all-star break. orioles have played 28 games since the break. it is their 29th. he already has 38 base hits. 1 and 2 with andino at second. the orioles trying to get on the board against o'sullivan jim jim high fly ball deep right field. back it goesch it is gone. a two run homerun for roberts and the orioles cut the lead in half.
2:29 pm
nice homerun from this side the plate. ball launched. abreu just took a couple of steps and watched it sail into the bleachers. so brian who hit nine home runs last year connects on number ten. the orioles are back in it. it is a 4-2 game. still only one down. here's adam jones. >> jim: a fitting run on the night he has his charitable event. he bashs one wodn't you thin úy. ioles ato t o runs on one swing. i'm rooting for an inside to stop swinng so hard. so he can
2:30 pm
you know me. i told him that. you don't usually hit a lot of home runs trying to. he said i did hit one off andy so one out. he loves to hit in the daytime. he is having a terrific year. it looks right now he is trying to get to that 20 run plateau he lreay er jones has 19and luke scott ha 9thve for e team le jos s hit seven since the break. luke scott has just one. ke had 18 at the break, adam had 12. and now they are tied for the team lea at 19. >> jim: brandon wern eads th organization in home ru he has 21. it was a real soi ickp by andy in the off season. he was nm of the three playe t orioles got from
2:31 pm
cincinnati for ramon hernandez. and ocean a homerun hitter legitimate it is his third consecutive homerun season with the minors. >> jim: now they picked up hughes. he has 22 combined between his aa and aaa. he is an intriguing guy out of south carolina wofford university,. >> jim: how do you spell that? >> jim: wofford. i did a basketball game that curry played in. davidson and wofford. they are in the southern conference. hang out with me, you'll learn things south carolina nice golf course. one reason to go down. >> jim: the point is, usually you go down there, you are in the acc territory.
2:32 pm
clemson. jones strikes out for the second out. >> jim: you want to find out about a young pitcher you give him a lead. brian roberts has it. you go back and look at films, you sit on the bench and watch games and if you make good pitches you have a chance and if you don't, you are going to get hit hard. i don't care who you are. young or old. rookie or veteran, limited service, whatever the deal is, you can stay out of the middle of the plate and be a little bit somewhat unpredictable, use all your pitches but do them at the appropriate time. you have a chance. >> the thing that is curious to me, you were talking before about the most difficult pitch for a hit tore reach the down and away pitch. when b. j. was with the orioles he used to tell the orioles pitchers that day in and day out and you
2:33 pm
2:35 pm
we have the lower third the lineup here against the angels in the fourth inning. base hit, heading toward the right field corner. aybar is trying to two. here come the throw and safe. it is aybar with a feet first slide. >> there is your speed. not only does he get a good pitch to hit, he knows the play is in front of him. he is running down the first base line. he has a guy with 12 assists. he knows he throws well. what he is going to do is out run the ball. nick does everything right, pretty accurate throw, but speed. this is what the angels do oh well. makes it look routine, done it? again the bottom of the lineup.
2:36 pm
aybar was not in the original lineup and he is now 2 for 2. >> hitters this year are hitting .364 ovigermmy guthrie. he doesn't pitch all his games against the american league but it is arena baseball so it is not like the national league where you might have a light hitting shortstop. and this is not a light hitting shortstop. this is a homerun hitter. he is 15 for his last 32 and hitting .333 coming boo this game on the road. the angels doesn't matter where they hit. >> jim: you moved that ball six inches inside and you are into the homerun zone. you don't see a whole lot of
2:37 pm
checked swings from mike. not tentative swings. >> jim: 36 extra base hits. 16 home runs. 2-1 the county. i want you to explain to me why what b. j. said about down and away why this is such an affected pitcher. you have to have great balance. you have to cover the outside corner out of the sweet spot of your bat unless you make the perfect swing. i was there when b. j. was talking to rick. we were having a coverage of choice after a game in texas probably about four or five years ago. b. j. said you would be an accomplished pitcher to rick if you could throw the ball down the way. he gave him a yeah but.
2:38 pm
there is no yeah but. b. j. always felt that asses a hit and when he was trade today atlanta, he saw them in their prime. >> they asked tom glavin when they had avery and mercury and really had a great starting staff, why are you guys good year in and year out. >> >> jim: moeller is there making the catch. he makes a catch just in front of the screen. >> jim: very nice play for chad moellerer. is it is a break for jeremy guthrie. gets it in right here. look he umpire making sure he doesn't trap it against the net. very nice. the runner does an advance. that is what they were trying
2:39 pm
to do. add another runner to it. back to the bag is aybar. enough wins to get himself in 25 years hall of fame numbers said he was in a pitcher's meeting with rick simmons. robin roberts. said that every time they get to a hitter kurt simmons would say pitch them at the knees. one young pitcher said that is all i ever hear. he said if god wanted them to be low ball hitters he would have dropped their arms an inch or two. you drop the bat. away right there. hit a couple of curve balls like this. for base hits. to take your point one step
2:40 pm
further if the baseball world recognizes that, why are pitchers reluck tan to adopt a philosophy? >> jim: i don't think that. i don't think they work on it hard enough. >> aybar will tag the draw through. he is going toward third. here is the throw, he advances 90 feet on the fly ball out. two down. >> jim: every time you watch adam jones and nick markakis, it is almost like a tryout. catch me if you can. again if you have great speed, it is a perfect throw. you see that. adam jones doesn't do a lot of them. you could see doesn't catch it with two hands. dave win field talking last year at the all-star game up in new york. the reason you catch the ball with two hands is because the throwing arm is actually the glove. if you catch it off to the side like adam does a lot, you have
2:41 pm
to transfer the ball at the same time. just the little things. all right here adam is making sure he can see with a bright day here in baltimore. >> jim: hard hit ball down the line. that is a fair ball and the angels get another run. aybar comes in, pickens in to second base with a two out rbi double. > >> jim: pickens, struck out the last time after doubling the first time. see him right there? gets a breaking ball. kind of hangs. he went back and looked at all the hits today. i mean all of them. all of them would be in the middle of the plate. no mystery. it is very difficult to do jeremy guthrie has pretty good natural ability. when he does it, against the
2:42 pm
good hitting club, the second best of the american league they hit the ball hard, that's what happened. not like you don't have the answers. cesar izturis playing second base today as he gets sunday off. shawling pickens three or more hits from a game this season 16 he already has two here today. jose lopez and ramirez each have 17. pickens now with 42 multi-hit games on the year. , a hit to left field, another base hit. pickens will score easily and the angels get to two bats. back to back rbi hits with two
2:43 pm
men down. izturis slops it into left field for an rbi single. > >> jim: in talking about location let's look where that ball is. look where it is. it's up. drop that ball about 18 inches lower, probably would have swung at it because of the count. one ball two strikes. izturis elevates and again with two outs, pickens has great speed. easily scores to make it 6-2. >> jim: pickens an rbi double. brian bass is now getting loose in the bullpen. so the angels get the two runs
2:44 pm
right back. >> jim: the only active player with a .300 lifetime average, 200 home runs, 250 stolen who homered his last at bat. >> jim: just think if they hasn't gotten the break. usually it is third or fourth in the league. starters are both men struggling. boy, what an impact this guy has this h. >> jim: hit to left filed. the inning ends but the angels get two runs on three hits. middle of the fourth. 6-2 los angeles. in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags?

2:47 pm
the year with their families and sit together up there. loud up there, which we like. >> jim: you can't throw them all the way up there but get some porcine firsts and the orioles are hitting. aubrey huff would like to do that. 32 even firsts last year. the most he hit since 2003. another change up swept the first base. >> so every time sean o'sullivan gets the orioles back in the game, the angels add some more runs to make it even. >> comes right back and now he should be using all his pitches anyway. makes you a lot more relaxed. what did brian say after the run in the third? he told me he said i got a little scared. third major league start all of a sudden i felt real calm. >> jim: boy, it is hard to do sometimes. even when you are struggling. >> jim: on the extra last night
2:48 pm
on the post game, brian was talking about his change up in kdka. he said he changed the way he threw it because he was consciously trying to throw it for a strike instead of throwing it naturally and letting it move women jim i struggled when i first came up, had no clue. i was 19 years old. you were talking about maddox and going to the hall of fame. glavin was 7 and 17. maddox was 6 and 16 and smoltz was 2 and 9. they ended up having hall of fame careers. smoltz is probably not over. wouldn't be surprised if you seen john smoltz pitching before the year is over. >> the dodgers their lead has gone down to four games. it is the dodgers lead is the closest it has been since
2:49 pm
may 13th. four and a half games. oh just robbed by pickens. you can't hit a ball harder than that. two men down. >> tell you what, it is off to the side and still a tough play. there is your shortstop, aybar, what has played well and will be a free agent along with john lackey, who pitched last nature. along with abreu. > >> jim: i think obey might have a better time finding a job this off season. >> jim: he stole some bases, .296. >> just wanted a three-year deal. >> jim: luke has gotten his
2:50 pm
first at bat, jim. maybe he is beginning to find that stroke. >> jim: i think for him, everybody talks about it, it is hard to do when you are struggling get a good pitch and hit it. that is exactly what he did. right there a little bit extra. getting just a little out of the strike zone. the double was just his fifth extra base hit since the all-star break in just his 12th hit overall. obviously there are streak hitters no baseball. but you would think when he has that much ability when he is swinging well could somehow figure out a way to be a little more consistent. that ball is going to go into the bleachers for a homerun. a double for a homer.
2:51 pm
>> that is what we were talking about right there. the first time he got a good pitch great swing down and in. 3-1 hitters count. you can talk about it all you want. now the lead back to three. he is so strong and he loves hitting the fast ball. did he overswing? down, extension. and if you dent have strength, it is a fly ball to center. if you are strong, it just sales out of here. see that is the plus. he doesn't have to, all he has to do is get a good pitch to hit and make a good swing to it. you don't see too many balls that come off the bat better than when luke scott hits them. wiggington fouls it off. the play better and bigger for the angels because it is a solo homerun. >> jim: think about the
2:52 pm
process. you think when you are hot you can hit everything. and everybody is aware that you are hot. they can show you every at bat and the secrets of pitches. you think you can hit everything. they are not going to throw you the same pitches. so all of a sudden, you start getting, it is not that dave gets you out as much, sometimes you get yourself on. the strike zone could be when you are hitting well the size of an 8 x 10 goes to being three or four times bigger. >> mike scioscia knows. he has been around the game long enough as a catcher player and manager that 6-3 is no safe lead. especially unless you get to the late parts to the bullpen.
2:53 pm
>> jim: all three orioles runs roberts luke scott here in the fourth were a solo. >> jim: he struck them out on a 3-2 change up the last time. >> jim: aybar has it. the throw not in time. wiggington is out with a two out single women jim eric aybar can cover some ground. he figured you know i'm making all the other praise, i might as well make this one. right there, you can see long way to go. chad moellerer ripped the ball, what a marvelous year he has had. aybar now with kansas city started out the year in seattle. he picked a good year to have
2:54 pm
his year year chad moellerer takes ball one. with a second start since coming back. >> jim: they got rid of what $58 million with alex going to the white sox? they could afford them you have to think he likes playing there. here comes mike to talk to his young pitcher. it is scioscia. going to be a one sided conversation. ian man we gave you a 6-2 lead. you had two outs and nobody on. what are you doing? >> jim: he would have done that when he was catching. scioscia played, we were talking on friday, he was a teammate of
2:55 pm
rick dempsey. never saying he didn't play well, but he had a real good year. scioscia a big homerun in the extra innings and in the playoffs and the dodgers win. against the angels. or excuse me the a's. that was a kurt gibson homerun off dennis eckersly. >> jim: 2-1 the count on moeller. >> jim: that is going to go all the way to the wall. aybar has the ball. an rbi double by mole and once again it is a two run game. the bullpen is scrambling as
2:56 pm
wiggington scrambles around the bases. right here finds the gap. hunt soldier going to get to it quickly. for a big guy, wiggington can control. you can see that secondary lead, he is off. looking over his shoulder right here. he comes to the finish line there he is, run number four. so the orioles have answered all this after two outs and nobody on. maybe the line drive by reimold changed the inning the orioles have had very good swings since. the reimold line drive. scott hit it out. runners in scoring position. orioles are third in the lead. this against the age yells.
2:57 pm
strike that speed pitch lacking past all over the plate and he got way with a high breaking ball. >> moeller picks up his third rbi on the year. >> jim: you know mike scioscia that has to steam him even mow more. the back-up catcher plays maybe even twice a week he is batting about .200. he doubles to the gap to drive in a run. >> jim: that's baseball. note going to happen. andino laid off that slow breaking ball that was too high. >> jim: now all of a sudden series of balls in the middle of the plate and the hitters are having a hey day.
2:58 pm
the home plate umpire has had a pretty good day so far. a pretty big strike zone. ten runs already now even through the fourth inning. over through that one ball three. you have a youngster on the ropes. and a youngster at home plate if andino gets on, you turn the lineup over. somebody starting to get loose matt palmer, who has had a terrific year, we saw him on friday night, 9-1. tells you scioscia is going to bring in one of his better middlemen. she has also started and pitched to all kinds of sordid ways for the angels. ball four. that was a very patient at bat by robert andino. he doubled his last at bat. it might be a tendency to be
2:59 pm
anxious and get that runner in from second base. >> jim: another way of looking at it is the guy wasn't even close. i mean he throws strike one. that is the last thing he wanted to do. no disrespect to robert. again you pencil guys in the lineup to go. brian roberts has 44 doubles. i better get andino out because roberts is next. let's see what could happen. look at those numbers on this homestand. so two on with two down. and brian takes it inside. now all of a sudden o'sullivan has lost the strike zone and he is not getting those close pitches he was early on. >> jim: that ball an inch inarch half off the inside corner. could have called it a strike. didn't. the inning is over but the

in preparation, you guy a great job. i don't know to leave that out. yeah i'm amazed. you guys really. i watch a lot of baseball. since i don't have to work every night. you know, you guys are the best. >> jim: well thank you pregame and post game. it would be better if the orioles would start winning
3:03 pm
games. we'd all be better. as good as we are. i just follow your lead. >> jim: rivera takes a close pitch for ball one. >> jim: how about a shut down innings? the angels 66 times this year, 1 out of the last 24 games, gives you an idea. guthrie hahas struck out one batter walk only one and the @on @alk has scored. heas had onlp three down and was in the second. rivera morales and hunter here in the fifth. foul back. >> jim: see that is your starting. if you could throw and mike flanagan used to when he was pihing coach here he had a youngster and he said let's praccelow and away. threw the first pitch about three, four inches off the outside corner. the next one drove inside, he
3:04 pm
said okay other side of the plate. one out of three doesn't do it. not at this level. not with these guys coming up to the plate with a bat. though it is a matter of working working working. then that is your starting. doesn't always go there. but if your muscle memory, your major league prayers, you are a pitcher. if you work on it often enough yocgdoit. here's anoth batter down 1-2 back in the count as rivera by falling off pitchers has worked it out 3-2. guthriis allowed six runs on eight hits. unced to short andino is down. >> jim: where was that pitch? outside corner and away. have to reach for it. thisisjeremy guthrie the
3:05 pm
first half of last year. look at that ball, right on the corner. not much you can do with that. so when he gets back to that, that is your frame of reference. you make the hitter adjust to that pitch. if he hits that pitch you can get him out. the league average is 185. that is what happens when people hit with two strikes. you have to cover all portions of the plate. hard soft in up down? you watch the hitter. you watch his approach. we watch the highlight fileps. we'll tell you what the counsel was. who is throwing, what kind of movement. high fly ball centerfield. easy play for adam jones. the video system the orioles have was fabulous. you can breakdown anything up to look at. terry crowley was looking the other day as aubrey huff last
3:06 pm
year versus this year. he had it side by side. it is absolutely fabulous. when the pitchers go in and do your work, i'm curious those pitches you are just describing, if you see the success, wouldn't you want to emulate yourself? wouldn't you want to do that more often? >> of course. he looks for things to do with the hitters. >> jim: you were talking to brad orangeburg, we showed you terry crowley. this is jeremy guthrie we know and love. he would be happier the team would be pitching better and they would win more games. >> it is very difficults a pitcher. you can't practice as a hitter. he does his work underneath the cage. off the tee, soft tosses. he can hit off the machine, he could take batting practices. as cal senior used to say
3:07 pm
perfect change ups. there is your shut down inning, three up three down, middle of the fifth. 6-4 angels. what is it to lead? at pnc, it's doing what most benefits our customers. whether that's building more certified green buildings than anyone on earth. creating online banking tools for the next generation. or making a 10 year, $100 million investment in kids. it's how we've always done business. and will for a very long time to come.

both brian and nick we applaud them for their community feelings in baltimore. >> it was great to see that. shooting baskets tonight. going to work on that already. adam jones tries to get the orioles closer. >> usually i'm busy working at that event but if you go to the basketball court i'll challenge it. >> jim: i did it two years ago with jeremy guthrie. he is good at it. >> jim: i'll tell what you. you have to have hand eye coordination. >> jim: are you saying i don't? >> fewer all-star second base men none emergency energy where they prey play four games a year because of the weather. >> jim: i'm in the hall of fame. look it up 1-1 the count. i'm going to challenge you.
3:10 pm
>> jim: you are talking attach. i've seen you and brian. i'm talking about brian. i was talking about bryant's bash. you are flitting around doing like you do. >> jim: a sure you i don't flit. i don't even know what that is. >> jim: maybe you are not a flitter. >> jim: the emcee does have responsibilities. i think you are ducking that. you are very concerned i might win and talk about it tomorrow night. >> jim: stop it on the way home. i'm sure you'll be auctioned off again this year with pitching lessons. went through the counsel on adam jones, o'sullivan trying to get through the inning and have a
3:11 pm
shut down inning of his own. orioles have scored two runs in each of their at bats. that was interesting. 4-2, 6-4. honestly in thigh my career i think it is harder when you get an early lead. you never want to blow a lead, where if you get knocked around a bit it is easier to hang in there and hope your team will come back. who wants to be the guy that blew a 4-0, 6-2 lead? even if you are 21. maybe he doesn't know. the last thing he wanted to do again they will get somebody else up. we had a kid he is a kid third round draft choice commanding pretty good early on and all of a sudden i don't know, maybe you know the ball is hit a little bit harder, still a good wind up in this system what you are coming out to stall for time here. you grew up in southern california, very little
3:12 pm
humidity there, maybe it is the sunday afternoon baltimore weather. >> this is not one of your typical you know, the humidity i guess the temperature is supposed to be around 90, 91. i would imagine it got close to that but it is not one of your typical days. >> it is muggy. i think it is a great. when you come from the west coast, it is a different climate here. sunny and when you think, it is not the sahara desert, but close to it and more humidity. fans enjoying it here. i don't think mr. o'sullivan is. irish, out in the sun. i don't think so. here's the tying run at the plate. it is nick markakis. jones's bluff is going the pitch is outside. 1-0.
3:13 pm
winning percentage in day games since going back to last season the angels at the top of the heap. orioles 25 of 53. the lowest winning percentage in day games since last season. >> the angels with 100 wins last year. who knows this year after a slow start? >> it is gone. and we are tied at 6. so nick markakis has his charity event today. he hits a two run homerun. brian roberts has his. he hits a two run homerun.
3:14 pm
3:16 pm
six earned runs on seven hits he struck out three and walked two, sean o'sullivan. five of the runs came in on the three home runs he has allowed. here's matt palmer. >> jim: he started off 8-0. mike scioscia describes him as irreplaceable. us dispensable. we saw him friday night. you know, for the overpowering, but he knows how to pitch, hitting a walk a cup of streakouts a couple of fast balls. a guy the first rookie if major league history to win his six games starting. he pitched well. 6-6 game. still nobody out here in the fifth inning aubrey huff takes
3:17 pm
a strike. bet the red sox early on. great curve ball. got that. got the cutter. there is the curve ball. bounces right to first base. morales has it. aubrey huff is 0 for 3 on three ground out and his one away. palmer 30 years old, originally drafted by the giants. he has been a proball player since 02. last year with san francisco got into three games and then signed with the angels as a minor league free agent this past season. >> jim: a lot of innings, a lot of strikeouts. didn't win a lot of game. 6-10 with a low era. you know, one of those guys you figure if you have any injuries, which they have, he could come
3:18 pm
-n maybe a 4 h-aguy. there is the curve ball again. a good guy to have. we have seen andy mcveil do that with not only pitchers but also position players where you never know. if you give a guy on a team a chance and all of a sudden, he pitched better than his record. not overpowering the radar gun. he is never going to be one of those guys that gets your attention. just seems to be able to get hitters on you. 2-2 on this. extra bases hit drought. strike three breaking ball. there is that cut their backed up boy, the, my first roommate with the orioles pitched six
3:19 pm
years in the big allegheny he was the master of the back-up slider. we talked to jim about getting hot. homered the next time. he had two hits on the homestand coming into today's game. and he has two hits today. a double and a homerun. only his second homerun since the break. and now the way he hits, this could be the beginning of one of those 15 for 19. >> jim: first of all you hope you see some right handed pitching. ground ball toward second. right there is mike and he gets it to first and matt palmer retires three consecutive batters but not before nick markakis knocked out sean o'sullivan the two run homerun to tie the game.

what does greatness taste like? miller lite. (announcer on call) off the glass, centered in front... oh what a great move, another great move... he skates in on goal... he scores! unbelievable! it's all over! oh my... (announcer) that's what greatness tastes like. triple hops brewed. great pilsner taste. miller lite. taste greatness.

we like it call attenti to all the youth sports teams, coaches and player. get ready for youth sports day sunday, september 20. the red sox are in town. so your football lacrosse field hockey basketball baseball or any sports team can come here and take part in a pregame parade at oriole park field.
3:22 pm
that is always a thrill for the youngsters to walk on the field here at camden yards. there is a strike on the appeal. erick aybar has had a big day. >> three runs in the first, couple if the fourth. solo homerun to abreu in the third. but in the game. the angels have scored in three of their five at bats against guthrie. after the orioles got back in the second time. now this game is tied. 2-1 on aybar. rbi single and a double and a run scored. ball three. there is a number 7 batter in
3:23 pm
the lineup today is a hard hit ball. foul. right past dan hole brooke. aybar doesn't run a lot. again the bunt hits, then you don't want to walk them. so the minute you get into the hitter's count 3-1. now 3-26789 that is not what you want. a hit pitch in the head where he will be swinging. as he does right there. anytime you can be a contact hit and hit over .300 both right and left as aybar has done, you are going to be an awfully good offensive player. here's the 3-2. line ball to centerfield. jones is there. the first out in the sixth
3:24 pm
inning. guthrie has retired five in a row. in this bright, sunny, warm sunny afternoon in camden yards. hold over series angels are here tomorrow night. on what will be a very challenging nine game over nine days, three city road trips, where they will go through tampa, chicago and minnesota. here's the upcoming schedule tomorrow night. 7:00 for the finale of the homestand. then it is off to chicago next friday night. high, fly ball off the bat. jones and andino and jones gets there. the orioles four consecutive series beginning with this one with the angels against defenders. it is a great test for the
3:25 pm
young pitching. the offense in exchange today but coming into this game, three runs or less than 10 of the last 14 games. you know that has to change. chris tillman who had his first major league win. the angels talking about tillman and maddox, lot of respect. tillman next pitches on wednesday in tampa. that's actually a pretty intriguing match up to me. he is going against jeff, who every time we talk about rookie of the year we forget to include jeff neiman. a base hit, he is heading for two. he tendered with a two out double. >> well the fourth double for
3:26 pm
the angels. and then again he makes a nice play solid left fielder. so that turns the lineup over yet again. well another ball up in the strike zone. now all of a sudden rick is going to come out and have a little conversation. give the bullpen a little time to get loose. >> the lower third of this lineup is three for nine with two doubles and an rbi a run scored. it is kind of amazing how that has hurt the orioles consistently on the year, lower thirds of batting orders doing well. it can't be or maybe it is, i don't know, a lack of concentration. because in this league as he pointed out, there is no owes i lineup in the american league t someone matter what in the lineup you are. >> that is a great point. i was walking by the lineup chad moeller and jeremy were
3:27 pm
talking. i said yeah, this is how you pitch this guy. jeremy said i need to get everybody out. sometimes the inability to do that it is a combination of focus. >> up the middle to sean pickens. here comes the runner toward the plate. adam jones throws not nearly in time. the angels get the lead back. >> such feel and touch. again if you keep throwing breaking balls, you would end up on the middle not out and away. the last two hits pickens has got are breaking balls into the plate. it is not a bad pitch if it is down off the outside corner. again that is the feel. you can see the cut fast ball adam jones, see the ball cut like a slider. so a double and a single. who does it better in the american league than the angels when you need to get runners in with runners scoring position.
3:28 pm
a thousand career hits, seems like they are all against the orioles. >> he has two doubles and a single and two of those hits have driven in runs. >> three last night. that is the 18th time now. he got to 16th last night. 17 now and he walked yet on bases when we talk about sean pickens four times last night 1-0. fouled back. mark hendrickson now joining chris ray in the orioles bullpen. as we peak in from the picnic
3:29 pm
area. oh guthrie at a should town inning in the fifth. two outs nobody on a double and a single has given the angels the least back. so seven earned runs charged to guthrie. he lost his last four starts coming into this one. he is equal what he has done over the last four outings. that is a lot of earned runs. >> i think to me the important thing, obviously is to get him out. the second most important thing is are you healthy. because sooner or later he is
