going to figure it out. i mean, they are right there. >> so he could have had, eventually he has to take him out. a lot of pitches are closing in on a hundred. dave trembley is coming out and going to the bullpen. you never went to do this when you have a guy talented jeremy has shown the orioles over the last couple of years. too many balls in the middle of the plate. too many up the middle. we still have a chance to win the game. >> so henderson comes -o guthrie leaves. angels lead it by a run.

3:32 pm
look at our geico game summary. a lot of offense brea both teams. three runs in the first inning. jeremy guthrie then the orioles would come back 4-0. 4-2 on the roberts two run homerun. make it 6-3 after the angels add a couple. then 6-4 nick markakis ties it up 6-6. then howie kendrick is driven in with two outs. guthrie now for what some the angels 67 times. two run home runs. luke scott having a great afternoon. mark hendrickson. guthrie on the bench.
3:33 pm
seven earned runs. the two men on the base are his responsibility. they try to get abreu here to end it. hendrickson fits well as a leader. gotten the game last night and pitched an inning. he worked the eighth inning, aloud a one out single and then got out of it. abreu hitting close to .300. he is at .197. >> double steal, to third two in scoring position with two down. >> jim: well they take what you give them. if you are mike scioscia, you have great speed. again it is one thing to talk about stealing bases.
3:34 pm
the other thing to execute it. and they do it. perfect throw, by chad moellerer. just not in time. big jump on mark helped dribbing son. it is 0-2 on abreu. so the angels score in four of their six at bats against guthrie. >> jim: the inning ends. good job by hendrickson. the angels get the lead back. 7-6 los angeles. @x@0@p@0@6p)@)

 >> amber: a scary night as saw david wright from the mets get hit in the head. matt cain said he was released from the hospital with concussion symptoms. no word on when he will return. dodgers pitch her mickey was hit in the game last night against the diamondbacks with a comebacker on the mound. we are told there are no fractures and that he is going to be okay. also a quick update on brad ferguson. he was sent to the orioles minor training facility to begin a training programs now we know nothing is seriously wrong. jim? >> jim: i know brad is very anxious to get back to baseball related activities. three times a day going through
3:37 pm
therapy to get that shin back in shape. it is the landing leg, his left leg, and of course if there is anything whatsoever, you don't want to go to the mound, because you don't want your leg to alter your arm. >> jim: he was in the whirlpool going from hot to cold. he was use it go more than he wanted to. >> jim: now he can get to sarasota and actually get on a baseball field under the medical team down there. dave walker hits that for the birds since he has missed about 17 days especially with all the innings, i think that is the important thing you talked about. because if you favor your legs and we have seen morgan and all kinds of going way back his career ended. >> jim: he is too important to the immediate future in particular. >> jim: i think you have to put
3:38 pm
a governor on a youngster like that at 23 that wants to be out there. the theme is 20 games below 500. you want brad to get back and get that out of the way. i think that i told him the other day he would have been back off anyway because of with all the innings, 123 innings. he would have been probably many more than the innings he pitched laugh year in aa and actual-ball. you never want to have to just say okay, we go to a six man row tation and do it that way or miss a start or two. have an injury of matt palmer, the master of changing speeds and movement. to see if the orioles can do something. another cutter off the end of the bat a shallow right. he can't do it and it falls in and wiggington ends up at
3:39 pm
second base. micer izturis was out -- macer izturis was out there. >> we saw adam jones earlier in the game he doesn't see it izturis he doesn't see it either. bobby's not even close izturis there were probably footsteps. bright, puffy clouds. the orioles they get a break here in the seventh. wiggington has a two hit game. see if the orioles take advantage now. a tying run on second base. here's chad moellerer. chad has looked good at the plate today. a good at bat on the third. yooksomefth with runers on scoring position
3:40 pm
i always felt he swung the bat well agaist fast balls. that is what e got to hit th first up off sean o'sullivan. one a double up the gap to left center. there is a little cutterch a paer. different against matt becae everything is moving. it is almost like you men he was 30, almost like vonnie staying he was he was his pitching coach location is important but oveet the strike zone is even more important. he are his had pitc cutting the ball or making it try to move. it is a good one. matt palmer grew up in missouri and now resides in arizona you are talking to gordon the advance guy with the phillies @@he betth red x curve ball. the red sox dint have

chance. earlier in the rear. 1-2 on moeller. úúúúúú rit sideand advance the runners, put some pressure on the defense of the angels. w that you have had two er to d strikes 2-2. wiggington edging off second base. and just i get a piece. upset with himself because he couldn't hang on to that one. >> a two seamer that little movement tries to get it by him and he fouls it off the glove. trembley looking on, on this bright day with the sunglasses
3:42 pm
on. 2-2. on chad moellerer. andino is on deck. that was a close pitch. matt palmer has a mike marshall disease. they pitched 102 games for the dodgers way back in the late 80s. a professor. there is a blue, shallow right back to izturis and he has it for the out. moeller trying to go that way. saturday august 29th orioles fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 6:30 for a special pregame ceremony as hal bates will be inducted into the oriole hall of fame.
3:43 pm
one of the true gentlemen in the game, harold mains. >> we'll see him in chicago. the orioles honored chick silversteen before. he just gave him a plaque he is going to have to do his rotator cuff exercises i can't here's a plaque. thanks. i wanted to see it tossed. >> jim: i wanted to see it also. see if he had the good form become. they could have gotten in the tunnel and warmed up like vice president biden did on opening day. >> jim: i go back to 1983 mike scioscia looking on when they had national baseball week and i pitched against scotty mcgregor on the lawn of the white house. president reagan came out, perfect attire, brown suit, nice tie, hair perfect. and i caught the% pitch.
3:44 pm
i'm not exaggerating, it was like 85 miles per hour. he had to warm up in the west wing or something like that. the eventual president sitting there. get it's cross. two men down. so palm soldier an out away from getting out of this. wiggington is second. the copyright and telecast is presented by the orioles. the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written con sent of the orioles. brian roberts in the third inning went deep for his tenth homerun on the year all right. the orioles trailing 4-0 at the time would have the lead. the fast ball off sean o'sullivan. he would take a single now to get the tying run in.
3:45 pm
>> he got the strike. >> jim: this is the third this inning with a runner at second base. >> jim: chris ray had a chance to talk to him today. he has been pitching out of his bullpen, his shoulder back in shape. location better, at least it was the other night. 0 and 1 on rockets. down to the way a ball and a strike. brian way homerun now on sixth street. 11 hits in the streak and seven
3:46 pm
for extra bases. breaking ball he lays off ball two. aaron oliver the veteran left hander now getting loose as we peer in from center field. palmer came on with none down in the fifth after the orioles tied it. matt palmer gets out of it the seventh it is a one run game. of the plane in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on!

3:48 pm
chris ray has really pitched very effectively since coming back from the disabled list. s in particular with his delivery, and his mechanics, he is about to come into this game in the seventh inning since coming off the disabled list, five appearances a total of seven and a third no runs allowed. he has held the opposing batters to .259 with a 6.91 era. five consecutive outings from coming back. >> finally his shoulder, he had the offer a year. always an issue.
3:49 pm
your hold is are where the velocity has gone up. we see it all time. 94, 95 in the middle plate doesn't do it hitters seem to be able to get on that. again, good sliders the other night. right there a good pitch. >> juan rivera first ball swinging he has it for the out one pitch one down in the seventh inning. >> jim: here is our ford trivia question. angels pitcher trevor bell is the grandson of who? jen autry, duke snyder, bow so the clown or burgess meredith? >> jim: i'm going to say burgess meredith just because i think he is a great actor. >> jim: do we have to answer it
3:50 pm
right now? >> jim: i don't know he was from california. >> jim: bob bell from 1960 to 1984. when i was a kid in new york city i met the club. > >> jim: that was a lot better than last night. that was last night's trivia question. who are the three philadelphia ath let i could. >> jim: did you get that one? >> jim: are you out of your mind? > >> jim: a base hit to left field, morales gets out with one down. >> 11 hits and they have all
3:51 pm
been thigh high or higher. that was a splitter. what a great hit ago approach by this ball club. and that was hit gently to left. see i thought when i saw that, that that was one of those you know, they are just trying to fool them. > >> jim: if we knew his last name was bell, we would have had a better chance. when i was a kid, bozo, at times, would tape his show in new york city and my father worked on the show. when i was a kid, i would tagalong to work with dad. what better thing to do? >> jim: that ball is ripped into left field for a base hit by tori you wanter. second and third and one out.
3:52 pm
you think you don't have to run around the field? brian roberts was the cut-off man on thatch he was the double cut off man. unbelievable there. a high pitch a high slider to hunter. boy you would like to, and it is going to be more difficult now, they are going to potentially walk aybar to load up the bases. this is what we have seen year after year after year, when you are behind, and you have to hope to get a double play with one pitch. it is a lot of pressure on your defense and your pitching. they have all been good pitches to hit and the angels haven't missed them >> jim: the angels have scored in four of their first six at
3:53 pm
bats and threatening here. the other two innings they didn't score they have gone three up and three down. >> jim: 18 wins that the last 24 road games and they were averaging over seven runs a game. one thing the orioles bullpen has done a very good job of is keep the ball in the ballpark. it is now 37 consecutive innings since danly buys dan buys allowed that win in detroit. >> now you need a double play to keep the score where it is. >> jim: here's mike napoli, the catcher who is 0 for 3. there is a good slider in there for a strike.
3:54 pm
the angels already have one sac fly today. hunter in the first inning. they lead the league now with 43. >> jim: you know we told you about the fact they had gone from first to third 90 times, which leads the american league. a lot of it has to do with the ability to get to third base. you can score it. i don't have to hit the fly ball, you have to hit the third to keep it from being an out versus the sacrifice fly. so for chris the two hits, both balls up in the strike zone. the high fly ball left centerfield. reimold and jones and jones makes the catch. and fires into third. that goes as a sac fly rbi took a grand slam away from mike napoli.
3:55 pm
look how far he has to go and then on the run, i don't know yeah, that ball's going out of here. what a play. tell what you, he made it look pretty routine. we'll talk about body control. first base umpire hole brooke now with dave trembley out for discussion. i'm not sure what this is about. maybe dave thought that the runner at third, morales, left too early. or did the runner go back to second base inside. did they double him up? so adam jones fired back in. and the ball went back toward the infield.
3:56 pm
adam jones robbed napoli as a sac fly. dave trembley obviously does not like the explanation. he just heard from stan hole brooke. >> so the angels get another run since the orioles tied in the fifth, single runs in the sixth and seventh. it is 8-6. hunter tagged he went to third. aybar stayed at first. here's the number nine batter howie kendrick. so two sac flies in this game. driving in two the angels lead by two. >> jim: kind of an unusual play for hunter. usually you go halfway, that ball goes off the glove or whatever. more difficult if you are tagging up to score. but it does get him another
3:57 pm
run. done get easier with denned trick. >> runner goes from first the orioles don't cover so aybar has the stolen base. >> that is three in the last two innings. like a track meet with these guys. 119 steals. tampa bay is in a different league. they were at 158 going into today's game. >> jim: i think the first wii to keep good base runners from stealing is keep them off. kendrick strikes out. now the angels hold an 8-6 lead. please drink responsibly.
3:58 pm
3:59 pm
fans enjoying their sev inning stretch. you kind of get the feeling it is going to come down to the ninth inning in this one. >> jim: it is going to come back into the back end of the bullpen. brian roberts got it back in the game after they trailed 4-0. he was's two run shot in between he had the solo homerun. the frustrating thing is looking at the scoreboard. last year jeremy guthrie would have been in the ballgame. you are still in this game. i think it is frustrating he didn't pitch any better than he did. the other side of the coin, you get an idea of how good this angel team is. see if you can score some runs and take your chances. when you put 16 runs on the board and 19 hits. >> we'll see why the angels
4:00 pm
lead the league in hitting. we put the ball in play very well anywhere in the lineup they can hurt you. >> jim: most of the mistakes on pitches a lot of times you make mistakes as a pitcher they pop it up. but this angels team not missing too many mistakes. more than ten hits, 20 out of the 25 games. maybe a little bit different way than the yankees who lead the league in runs. ner number two. when we talk about the angels they can take the speed and the extra base. >> jim: it is not over until it is over and that may be the case this afternoon here's adam jones who will lead off with the birds in the bottom of the seventh inning. huff will follow adam scored
4:01 pm
his last at bat. he is trying to get him up as the time run. matt palmer stays on he has been terrific. in his third inning of work he has allowed only a double. actually a ball lost in the sun. off the bat of ty wiggington. morales is wide at the bag, he takes it unassisted. one down. time now for you to text in your vote for the at&t player of the game, here are the candidates for today. nick markakis two run homerun. sean pickens a 3 hit game. so matt palmer does his job and he will lead and right now, he is the pitcher of record on the plus side as the remainder of the angels's bullpen now the back end darren oliver coming on, oliver coming on one out none on in the seventh. pxopo

on a ball lost. he is the pitcher of record on the plus side. if the bullpen can hold it near the ageless darren oliver. >> jim: 38 years old and the dean of the staff. the lowest average .10-2 coming into this season. and 20 out of the last 23 outings are scoreless. inherited runners, he talked about that. he stranded 22 of the 29. not overpowering and not really a guy that is a left handed specialist. he gets right and left out equally. he has given up more home runs, five home runs the left and rights. hasn't done that in his two years with the angels. his 38. >> six home runs since the all far break. he changed his stance. he was more like stan. now he is more upright. >> jim: slicing it the other way. won't get there, but it is
4:05 pm
fouled. >> jim: season of adjustments. he said no, i was in a period of adjustment. ended up in coopers town. you know, you look around at nick markakis, and there we go. jepsen who came in last night 98 miles per hour. i'm thinking about nick. he does use the whole field. anytime you can be all the way into august and you have 45 hits coming in, the last 48 to center and 49 to right field. i mean, can you use the whole field? any better than that? >> jim: that is why his consistency is what it is. 29 games since the all-star breaks he has base hits in 25 of the 29 games.
4:06 pm
pitch it away. hits it away. nick markakis is out. two men out. >> jim: it is funny. if you started to say okay, darren olive this is his 14th year in the big leagues. you would say well you know, does he have a great slide and you go well, no. but it is very good. how about his curve ball? he only throws 90 or whatever. but he can pitch. he makes pitches. and my point all day long, if you look at the 14 runs, eight for the angels and six, a lot of them have been on pitches where the pitchers just haven't executed like they would like to. >> third baseman in the coaches box up now the orioles go three up three down in the seventh. angels coming up. up by two. @pp÷÷÷
4:07 pm
4:08 pm
back here at oriole par is a two run game. it is for the birds. the last two innings of the game chris ray will stay on. and the top of the lineup and that means ray has to go against sean who is 3 for 4 with a couple of rbi hits. izturis will follow, then bobby abreu.
4:09 pm
there is a trying in the outside corner. about guthrie went give. hendrickson struck out the only batter he faced. ray charged with a run in the seventh. the angels at 69 and 45. they have got 20 and 8 since the all-star break. now off the master cd moeller. their lead in the alwest is four and a half over texas. texas has been battling the red sox and the rangers have closed to within a half game of boston for the wild card lead and they are even in the loss. >> jim: i was looking on the internet with left and beckett pitching 31 and 14. the rest of the starter 31 and
4:10 pm
34. eight stolen bases last night for the rangers against the red sox down in texas. julio four hits four of them. there is your outside corner. you know i was talking to rick about chris ray. looks like the velocity is coming back, talking about chris with his pitching coach. he said yeah, i looked at a lot of films. he stayed what's important is number one he gets healthy and now the shoulder is better, he said if you go back and look at his film when he first came up, there is probably a little more movement. so when he gets his arm strength back skis wind up a little bit smoothed out, he'll probably see some more location rate there. that is perfect. he makes a perfect pitch to sean. 94, 95 and again the release point on that split fingered fast ball to get it to go down. huff scores up and goes to
4:11 pm
the bag unassisted. >> stays in the infield. i don't helps to be tall. helps to be green, too. >> green? i can't green? oh, you mean like green? >> yes. i'm trying. we have the solar water heater now, trying to cut down on the electric use. the sun heats the water. >> jim: we shouldn't had it some winter yet. we'll see. there is sun in the wintertime.
4:12 pm
it is just a little farther away. >> jim: a big bounce to andino and safe at first base. that was trouble from the start. andino waited back on it to play big bounce and abreu always hustles. should in an infield out. this is a high chopper. do you smell a base hit? 35-year-old guy. i would imagine they'll give them an error. a good throw would have get gotten him. scoreboard says base hit. might as well give the veteran a base hit. good throw probably still would have had it. two down. here's rivera. batting clean up today. abreu, weird combination. 24 steals at age 35. >> jim: he would be one of
4:13 pm
those guys to let everybody run on their own he said i want to find out if they had any kind of instincts. you don't need to know that about. yeah joe did manage bobby abreu one of the years he was in new york. he has always been a good base stealer. apparently they have thought better of that. >> doesn't change the problem for chris ray. you need to get the hitter out. you don't want abreu to steal the base. >> there is a stolen base for bobby abreu. >> number 25. absolutely amazing.
4:14 pm
so again, going back to the theme of what joe was saying, i think that year paul o'neal, who is a big guy, terrific one of batting practice, .300, five straight years, something like 16 for 16, you find out about your guys. abreu runs by him and andino has it. so the error and bottom of the eighth, coming up. the orioles trail by two. . but with attention assist, your new e-class can actually detect drowsy driving behavior... and warn you. this is the new e-class. this is mercedes-benz. what is it to lead? at pnc, it's doing what most benefits our customers. whether that's building more certified green buildings than anyone on earth. creating online banking tools for the next generation.

4:17 pm
theier. as the season has progressed he has gotten better. >> you got a guy on, jim. you know the story that is all you need. you don't have a whole lot of time when a guy throws close to 100 miles per hour. you could see it right there, very early in the count chases something out of the zone. >> jim: scott and wiggington follow. that is trouble for abreu. that is down for a base hit and it false toward the corner. abreu gets it back in there you go. the orioles get the tying run to the plate. >> jim: right here right on the corner. the plate coverage slices it down the line. two runs down. not going anywhere other than
4:18 pm
into scoring position that was a modest three game hitting streak going. here's luke scott. luke has doubled, he has homered, he has grounded out. dying run at the plate in the eighth inning. >> jim: you'll see how luke will play it. you think the way he is swinging the bat right here a lot of ho movement, 97 miles per hour. double homerun already. reimold the lead off double. orioles now have nine base hits. breaking ball low. picked it up, let it go by. scott now has the homerun lead.
4:19 pm
he has 36 extra base hits with the homerun today. extra swing and a high fast ball. he did check in time. here's larry vanover the crew chief. that is the other thing about watching a hitter who seems to be getting his comfort zone back. >> jim: you are right. when you compare them with what the angels have done they have rarely what i have seen in this series get themselves out early in the count. right there he started to bat. just imagine how strong you have to be to stop it like that. mike scioscia, the longest tenured manager in the american league. former catcher. catcher mike napoli is having a tough time with the relief

4:23 pm
jim johnson and danny baez getting loose in the bullpen. wieters will pinch hit for chad moellerer. matt has a four game hitting streak going. he has not hit a homerun since the all-star break. he is up there representing the dying run. -- the tying run. a line drive toward the middle and a base hit. he got past the glove of izturis. it was a soft line drive and matt wieters comes off the bench and drives in a run. >> came in, in his last 20 games, hitting over .300. that number is going to go up. >> jim: just couldn't get there. there after the double down the
