4:45 pm
>> jim johnson made a terrific pitch. 3-2. we could walk it up there. we talk about low and away. look at that. down, outside, third to the plate. >> how do you get that movement? is that natural or the grip? >> i think last year he never had that at as a starter. most tall pitchers you trite on to short in your stride for him. it was the opposite of finding that happy medium. obviously it is grip pressure. it disappears. he is the minor league pitching coordinator for the orioles. he was part that have jim johnson now lives in sarasota in
4:46 pm
the off season as does dave. and jim worked with mort and dave on that stride. ever since it has all come together for him. 2-1 on kendrick. >> again the ball starts on the inside quarter. the illusion is, it is going to be a strike and howie kendrick chases it and it just keeps coming at you. tremendous movement from jim johnson when the ball is down. over the last maybe six, seven weeks, looks like the fast ball is very effective. >> brian roberts has a play and he gets it to first. two men down. johnson reached for it, but he never it never bounced up to him. two outs in the los angeles tenth inning.
4:47 pm
but first johnson has to get by sean figgins, who would be the league mvp if he batted against the orioles every game. outside. ball one. we'd like to welcome those who are watching the nationals win at cincinnati 5-4 the final there. bonus coverage now on masn and hd. we are in the tenth inning at camden yards. orioles tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a manufactured run. double by brian roberts. and then the stolen base. adam jones would get it in with a sacrifice fly. there it is. pretty good but 333 feet down the line. gets brian roberts in it to
4:48 pm
make it 8-8. figgins has two doubles and three rbis. he has one of those. scored two runs. he leads the league in runs scored. if he gets on, he is probably going to steal another base. jim johnson has an easy 99, 95, 98 on that pitch. >> one time starter coming through the orioles system.
4:49 pm
johnson and chris ray in the seven man bullpen two pitchers drafted and developed by the orioles. 3-2, aubrey huff we'll go to the base unassisted and jim johnson has a three up there's down inning. we'll led to the bottom of the tenth. pxopo
4:50 pm
we go to the bottom of tenth inning tied at 8. jim
4:51 pm
johnson did his job. orioles's bullpen the last three innings has not aloud a run. here's hoe says say arredondo to come on. a run in the accepting. but he stranded two runners. no runs in the eighth. baez had three up three down in the mining. johnson three up three down in the tenth. for you it is up to arredondo for the angels to try to keep this game going. orioles win it with a run. >> the orioles saw him on friday night. the first the year where the angels won 10-2. incredible numbers, 55 strikeouts in 61 innings. only 41 hits. he was a set up guy to frankie rodriguez this year with the mets. they sent him out early june? aaa. luke scott will lead off for the orioles.
4:52 pm
>> then a homerun. luke's 20th homerun was back in the fourth inning solo shot. orioles have had three home runs in this game brian roberts, nick markakis, and luke scott a solo shot. wigging tonight on deck here in the tenth. inside, looked like an off speed pitch. >> that is the book on luke scott. a fast ball. pretty good slider. hard thrower. when you mess with a breaking ball, you have a fast ball here. he gets it and he takes it. arredondo has allowed only two home runs in his 28 appearances for the angels. you could see pretty good fast ball right there at 95. good movement. in the splitter. bounces all the way back to the
4:53 pm
screen. jose arredondo out of the dominican republic. he is 25 years old. he had a heck of a year last year. caught the ep of the bat. erick aybar. he has it for the out. luke scott retired. one away. >> the last orioles pitcher to win ten games was orioles wired a wire that year and arthur was very effective in that middle
4:54 pm
relief role. he had the same none of wins as the number five starter scott. he couldn't pitch in back to back games but he could give you two innings. there is a curve ball and it is a good one. you know what the scouting report is on wiggington trying to stay away up and out over the plate. he drops that kind of curve ball off and comes back to a split picker change up. of course maybe it was a slider but it kind of backed up. wiggington two out at four. he has singled and scored and also doubled on a ball lost in the sun. where was that pitch?
4:55 pm
i guess low. napoli had to reach forward a bit. again very close. that is a swing and a base hit for wiggington. he did not want to swing, he checked his swing and the ball hit the bat. >> that is when you know you have good stuff, jim. you supply all the power. right there, i'll tell you it is a high pitch, apparently. it is a three hit day for wiggington. he has a double on the ball the angels lost in the sun and a single on a checked swing and
4:56 pm
he has an infield hit on a ground ball wieters has been on deck watching this array of pretty good stuff on arredondo. wieters drove in a run in the eighth running to make it a one run game. that made it 8-7. he extends his hitting streak to five in a row. a tough way to do it as a pinch hitter. 0-1 the count. a high fly ball to left field. playable for juan rivera. as for the out and two men down. arredondo is an out away. cesar izturis will bat if a first time. pinch lit for andino on the eighth and grounded out. izturis took over defensively. the orioles have only melvin
4:57 pm
mora left on the bench. the angels have all four of their bench players still available, mike scioscia has not yet made a move with his lineup. here's a weak ground ball right side going to the bag inside. so izturis gets his brother cesar izturis. we are heading to the eleventh. tied at 8. in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! ( ding )
4:58 pm
 well it questions to the
4:59 pm
eleventh inning and now it is up to the bull pens as this game is tied 8-8 and jim johnson stays on for a second inning. we have a three up three down tenth. when the orioles come up in the bottom of the eleventh it is matt to the top of the lineup. johnson will go to work here on izturis bobby abreu and juan rivera. izturis just got his brother on a nice play at first base. even though they played wednesday afternoon in anaheim. he said his turn. >> whose turn? >> cesar izturis it was his time to buy lunch. >> he is a year older. >> got to take care of your
5:00 pm
little brother. >> do you think, you know, evening off anyway. so somebody will have to buy the other dinner for him. he may have played the veteran move there by buying lunch which tends to be less expensive than buying dinner. the little brother will have to pick up the tab with his real money. >> 2-2 is fouled back just below. us. oh, nice catch. on the rebound, no less. johnson worked an inning last night in a second inning here today. fly ball fouled. hold it deep into the corner. yeah i have seen two splitters,
5:01 pm
which are a little unusual. a sinker, curve ball change up pitcher. last thing you want to do is speed up the bat. tie ballgame. almost looked like another one there. coming out of the hand funny. another again the velocity down. one thing to use all your pitches. but in a tie ballgame you usually try to do what you do best, most often. 3-2 the angels as the top hitting team in the league the one thing that you notice that is a pattern up and down the line is the patience of the hitters. >> my point earlier on in the game with his very rarely early in the count until they get these two strikes do they get themselves out. so they know what then to hit. >> ball four he works a lead off walk in this tie game in the
5:02 pm
eleventh. >> again, messing around with your third pitch there. leads to this wake. if you look at the numbers year in and year out, it is 15 percent if you get the first guy out. it goes up to the high 40 almost 50% if the first guy gets on. especially if you have abreu coming up. a high percentage nine out of 12678 a lot of options for mike scioscia. contact hitter at the plate. look if a ball to try to hit it into right field early in the count. >> hits it to left field. the angels have something going on now i can't that is my theory on pitching. when you have a left handed hitter come up with the hole and the runner at first is make him hit the ball the other way ask jim johnson does that. now to abreu's credit he gets a base hit.
5:03 pm
but the double play still in order. you don't get the first and third. this is really what pitching is all about. not that you wanted to walk that first guy. and new all of a sudden, even though rivera has been swinging the bat as well as anybody in the american league, if he hits a ground ball at one of your infielders, he got two quick outs. juan rivera now, he is one for five. there is a strike at the knees. back in the first inning when the angels got to jeremy guthrie for three runs in the first, sending eight batters up. we have starters.
5:04 pm
the beginning to a playing field now. as we were past 5:00 looking background ball to second, it will be tough on this. out there back to first. not in time. pretty good throw by cesar izturis there after roberts got it to him quickly. >> juan rivera, who looks like he had leg problems earlier on over the last four or five weeks real ali gets out of the box. he has not run this hard in any of the three games. so he beats that out. and creates the first and third situation. here is izturis's at third. morales now.
5:05 pm
first and third and one down. isn't there a rule in baseball you have to have your shirt tucked in? his shirt is out in the back that might give him an advantage, you know, tight pitch. he is getting it a with something, jim, right before our eyes. it is low, 2-0. also has two hits to go. by the way, you have a couple of hits. you can wear where you are shirt anyway you want. >> tough spot for jim johnson it all started with a lead off walk. >> if you can get the ground ball it makes it more difficult. >> he is four for four. juan rivera has yet to be thrown
5:06 pm
out this year. >> there is your fast ball. >> the fast ball counts. you get extra. i think the one thing about jim johnson kind of hooks the ball a little bit. a foul tip right into the glove of matt wieters. 2-1 the counsel. runners on the corners one down tie game in the eleventh. side ball. bobby abreu helping. we talked about the preparation not only physical but it is mental. right here he is going to look for a pitch. doesn't have to get a base hit. fly ball most likely get a run in. it is a walk. so the blue jays are loaded with one down. i think that is the big difference. you get anxious and might swing
5:07 pm
at that curve ball but he knew what he wanted to hit. rick will come out to talk to jim johnson for a breather here and talk about facing hunter. johnson has walked two in t inand go has given up a base hit. >> your pitching coach comes out. what does jim johnson do best? he is a sinker ball pitcherch it all started when they got ahead of his tourists, of izturis and went to his third best pitch to work the count to 3-2. so you are one pitch from getting out of this inning. if it is ground ball back to you, you go right to home. >> a double play. what a break for the orioles, and johnson as hunter hit it
5:08 pm
right at brian roberts, who doubles up morales. we head to the bottom of the eleventh, orioles can win it with a run. we are tied at eight. you play . right, so you start with some cold coors light, - you play to win the game. - then you? yes, yes, agreed. ( chuckles ) we were just wondering, do you go online? do you enter a code? hello! you play to win the game! look for the official entry code inside special packs of coors light... for your chance to win nfl tickets. do you ever play to lose the game? get out! you get out! ( laughs )
5:09 pm
the bottom of the eleve the orioles can win it with a run. the productive part of the lane up today comes up roberts, jones
5:10 pm
and looking for a run to send these fans home happy. roberts has scored twice. key double in stolen base in the bottom of the ninth. jones scored a run earlier. nick markakis has a two run homerun. >> seven doubles these last five games. now a single. a single off arredondo is almost like a double, the way he can steal bases. >> the shadows are creeping even closer to the pitcher's mound now with the lights over the third base side. >> you have the pitcher in the sun and the hitter in the shadows. fast ball 2-0. arredondo allowed a single to wiggington in the tenth but then got wieters and izturis. >> he went 3-1 on luke scott. let's see how quick the bat is
5:11 pm
of brian roberts when he is looking at a certain area. that is how he hit the homerun. fast ball off sean o'sullivan, in the middle, turned on us. this kids' got really good stuff. orioles have to hope he either makes a mistake or gets wild. 2-2. high ball three. one of the toughest thing if a pitcher, i don't care if you are a starter or reliever, when you have a guy with speed at the plate. if you walk him, it is going it be a walk in a stolen base. foley it in there the capability of hitting doubles or homerun.
5:12 pm
roberts goes down. very rarely do you see brian chase out of the zone. adam jones comes up he does not have a hit. ball four a strike here's the bottom of the ninth. he just missed. sac fly roberts tied the gym at 8. we are now in the eleventh. high bounce. gets it to first. two men down in the oriole eleventh. and well, one of the rumored trades about three years ago,
5:13 pm
was arredondo, aybar, and santana who will pitch tomorrow for miguel tejada da. that might have worked. two down, here's nick markakis. here's one for five with a two run homerun. there is a strike. looks like he took that pitch to get a look at the stuff of arredondo. that side 1-1. i wouldn't think this game continues, johnson comes back in, he has already pitched two innings.
5:14 pm
one of two. brian bass is getting loose in the bullpen. 1-2 on nick markakis. tie game 8-8 in the bottom of the eleventh. the angels haven't scored since the seventh inning. the orioles got a run in the eighth on the wieters pinch hit rbi single and a run in the ninth to tie it. each team has 13 hits. there are only two pitchers remaining in the angels pull ben. shane lucas and jason holcomb.
5:15 pm
looking out on this hot day. the orioles have three. toward the middle and it gets to a base hit but nick markakis gets on with two men down a two-hit game for nick. he now has 40 multi-hit games and ties adam jones for the team lead. >> 36 consecutive games hit or walked, get go on base some way. so once again, the outsideout field will get a couple of steps deeper. good speed at first. here's aubrey huff, singled his last at bat. grounded out three times and popped up to third. the angels have caught 21% of
5:16 pm
the potential base stealers. 79% have made it successful. not much of a lead by nick. that is the one thing he said he was going to try to concentrate on, maybe stealing more bases a couple of years ago. i would imagine that would change next year. only five attempts. we can do so many other things well. the orioles really don't do a lot of running, except for cesar izturis and brian roberts and they rarely hit and run. nick has just five attempts on the year. he is talking about maybe stealing 20 in the season. >> that is not going to happen unless you attempt it. i think that is going back to what i talked about when joe tori let all his players have the green light in spring training to find out about their
5:17 pm
capability. it is not only do you have the speed to do it, are you willing to work on the jumps? are you willing to be aggressive? are you willing to get picked off? do you run in the right counts? at least anticipate those kinds of things. then of course if you will give them the green light it leads them to be more aggressive and become less station to station. this is a tough ballpark to go from first to third it is so small and inmate. normal single to right field, it is very difficult to go all the way with some of the other parks in the league are much bigger. got some room out of left sent tier field. now they are playing deep now. but this outfield is playing much deeper than normally would play and there is a great splitter and handing? opt out on strikes. two strikeouts in the inning.
5:18 pm
a man left on base.
5:19 pm
on this lovely sunday afternoon. bonus coverage and bonus baseball. we are in the 12th. tied at 8. 27 base hits and here is brian bass coming on. the sixth oriole pitcher used. >> his last appearance against oakland back on the twelfth. oakland in earlier in the week. actually pitched two scoreless innings but did walk three. again, whether he is rested, and he stays closed with a front shoulder or closed long enough,
5:20 pm
throws strikes, good sinker ball, good curve ball change up. good stuff, now normally you might say well, he comes in to an op pour tune part of the lineup. that is 7, 8 and 9. the way 7, 8 and 9 swung the bat for them i'm not sure that is any kind of a break. >> that is why they lead the american league in second averages they hit well from one to nine. if aybar gets on, he is already doubled and walked and then you have napoli, the home one guy behind him. >> a chop tore first. touched the base unassisted. and one down in the twelfth. aybar with the ability to get on and via the infield hit. so you are shortened up.
5:21 pm
bulger getting atlas now. orioles awe him last night came in tried a 5-1 lead. here's a dangerous hit forebass. napoli has home one power. steady in the right field. solid line drive for brian roberts. you stayed away from his power. doesn't have a lot of peed. by getting eric aybar leading off the inning it changes the strategy for mike scioscia who will go to the sacrifice. now with one down it takes that away. >> you never ever know. we saw him hit the run with two outs last night.
5:22 pm
as hot as figgins is. not a lot of speed at first it is a tough sacrifice. needs to be a perfect bunt. >> look athis. >> it is it nerves a purpose. you don't give up the on you. again i think you looked maybe at scioscia maybe looking down at third base and wiggington the angels have sacrificed 31 times this clear. the orioles play the line. you know. we talked about how the angels, even in tie ballgame, one run lead, they played off the run. the wiggington play and go trying to take away the double. and now, he will move back a breaking ball. normally you don't play howie kendrick on the line like that.
5:23 pm
you play him off. you guard against a double but you open up that gap for the single. different way of thinking. it is the catcher on at first base. mike napoli. here's the 0-2. high chopper toward the middle. a base hit. so kendrick bounces one through and here come the angels again. they had the bases loaded one down in the eleventh couldn't score. now they have two on with one out again it is the lower third of the lineup. >> you make a pretty good pitch and you get the bad result. you get the ground ball you are looking for. but just a high chopper. one thing about this infield at camden yards right years firm more than it was earlier in the year. ball into the outfield. now you have to pitch to
5:24 pm
figgins. that average it was .303 whether he came in on friday night. it has gone up seven points. now in the third game. and so figgins will go down to first base. that loads the bases with one down. >> brian bass talks about being able to stay close. even when you go side to side what happens is you open up the front side and the arm comes through too quickly. so he couldn't stay closed enough. and right there, i think seeing that, they are going to come out and say hey wait a minute, you have to stay over the rubber long enough to be able to get your front shoulder going to first to home plate ask your back arm you throw north and south. that was a little spin move and you end up getting something
5:25 pm
you didn't want to hit. izturis comes up now with a chance to get the angels. i think another reason for this is you could squeeze mike scioscia, i mean, you need a run. if you are the angels. they don't care how they get it. bass ahead on one. so for the second straight inning, they get the bases loaded and only one out. hunter lined into a double play in the eleventh. 0-26789 they are swinging at everything. don't three them a strike. well, based on the strategy you said mike scioscia employs anytime, how about a squeeze 0-2? probably not. >> no, it has been an interesting day on the appeals. every one has been denied. from that angle looked like he
5:26 pm
checked. certainly sold it. here is the 1, two. >> the only anglicans that'll mattered was larry vanover. >> good point. one vote and it is his. napoli at third. figgins at first. one down. bounced to first, he's got the double play. by huff. that had to be very difficult to see as izturis and the ball got there at the same time. nicely turned, 3-2 to 3. and the inning ends. the angels stretch to. on we go in a tie game.
5:27 pm
i've never been all that great with my money. probably because i've never had much. but now that i'm making more, it's time to be a little smarter about how i manage it.. with the calendar, i can schedule all my payments. and when funds are low, danger days help me stay out of the red. i can also transfer money with just a click and a drag. so maybe i'm better with money than i thought. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high-definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.
5:28 pm
 >> we go to the bottom of t twelfth. the angels getting a double play. in the eleventh it was a line drive lit by lunger that brian roberts got the first. then the 3-2-3 double play. there is jason bulger to try to keep this game going. he goes on to work on the bottom of the 12th.
5:29 pm
the first round guy all the way back in 2001 with arizona. we picked him up as the minor league agent. struggled early this year we sa awe them last night came in walking a hit and fuentes came in with a 5-1 lead. fuentes came in to get the saves. again you know, 93, 94. big curve ball. last night had trouble getting them over. reimold scott and wiggington in the twelfth inning a run wins it for the orioles. ball one outside. >> trying to think of one thing we talked so many year in and year out if you are going to get better as a ball club, the orioles are trying to i guess emulate games where you star winning division titles. angels have done it five out of six time. you want your young pitchers to be better at the end of the
5:30 pm
year than they were at the beginning. bulger is one of those guys. early on ten earned runs in the first seven and two-thirds inningings. since then only 11 earned runs. the era a bill bit over two runs a game. >> reimold took 2 and 1 the count. today's within out of five with a double and a run scored. he hasn't had a multi-game since july 28. being looking for a second hit here in the twelfth. you don't get too many guys for a couple months in the big leagues that can hit second in the lineup and use the whole field. it is almost like he is too tentive at the plate. i'm trying to get the perfect pitch. so what happens is, he is a good, fast ball hitter. he takes 2-0 down the middle
5:31 pm
and makes a better pitch 2-2. and bulger makes a great pitch with his breaking ball and you are out. so the two pitches you have had a chance to hit, you took. even if you overswing 2-0, as long as you get a ball you can drive, and that is pretty much what he let go by, so again i think that's just going to have to change. that is part of the progress. whether you are a young pitcher you you have to learn what you have to do to be successful. same with the inning. here's luke scott. high fly ball, left centerfield. rivera moving in on it. has it for the out. two down. back to back rallies in the eleventh and the twelfth, jim, ending with double plays. >> got it in on hunt and then morales and in the twelfth inning this right here.
5:32 pm
this aspecial double play. huff makes a great throw. you don't see that too often. >> i don't know how aubrey huff saw that ball. the runner and the ball getting there at the exact same time. mom, look what i found. here's ty wiggington, two outs, none on. wiggington has a three hit became. tomorrow in the box store, someone is going to pickup the newspaper and go they don't know there is a check swing a ball lost in the sun and an infield hit and they all still count. >> how about a four for four with a blast? >> that would work. you can do the post game and go home. not that i really care. i don't you can't go home. you have an event. >> no, i understand. >> oh yeah. so do i.
5:33 pm
>> moving down the road. >> jason bulger with a nice, nice breaking ball. a fast ball counsel. each more impressive. >> yeah my point on reimold is when you do get those counts, and that is part of the process of learning, we do what wiggington did. 2-0 you get a fast gall ball, in your zone. let it go. there it goes. good pitch three up three down. we'll head to the 13th inning at camden yards, tied at 8. @x@
5:34 pm
5:35 pm
this is the sixth orioles pitcher i can't with the cape wait a minute of pitching mull tippal innings. pitched four innings on a couple of occasions. i'm glad i did not scribble into the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th on my score card which i occasionally do. you, of course, could be in trouble, sir. >> 15th and 16th are okay spoken for, at the moment. >> yes. >> that is why i do it in pencil.
5:36 pm
here's bobby abreu, and kendry morales to follow three consecutive home runs. let's go back to the third inning when abreu hit one out on jeremy guthrie. he says thank you very much. 38th homerun of the year. guthrie is saying the only home one this afternoon. well the thing about bobby abreu in this situation, and brian bass certainly should understand this, he is going to make you throw it over. now all of a sudden, he books more of an extra base threat. he is going to look inside middle and try it turn on something. that is not the hitter we saw early on, off jim johnson went away. a hitter's count. a very selective accomplished hitter. bass falls behind him 3-0. that ball's off the corner and he gets the call.
5:37 pm
he was ready to go down. 3-1 on abreu. there is a base had i. yet again, the angels get a runner on. second time in the last three innings the lead off man has been on. >> this is amazing. this is what major league baseball for accomplished hitters is about. can you get the good part of the about the on the good part of the ball? how do you do that? you look for pitches. you work on your batting stroke. now you have all kinds of possibilities for mike scioscia, because you have a guy on at first base who has 25 steals.
5:38 pm
juan rivera hit the chopper. this is a tough play. wiggington can't make it. he tried to make it the only way that you can make it to make the play. so the swinging bunt i think is just loading him up. a breaking ball he just swings over. here comes wiggington. he felt the only way he could make that play, you can catch it with your glove but you are probably not going to throw out rivera. how about body language? you can see the look on his face the frustration. >> two on with none out. angels have left two men on in each of the last two innings, we showed you the double plays in each of those threats. here's morales, the first baseman, a number five hitter.
5:39 pm
here's a strike. >> how often can you get a couple of walks, a base hit and one inning and not score two base hits on that and not score and that happened the last two innings. i think if you are the team on the mound, you are testing fate if you keep going to it. there is a bouncer a base hit into right field. abreu will be held at third as nick markakis fires back in. >> nick thinks he is pitching again and in atlanta in high school. that is smart, you look if a pitch you can hit into right field, even though the first baseman huff is not holding the run or. and you hope you get it. here we go. how many times have we seen this afternoon nick markakis throwing to home plate? >> andino held abreu.
5:40 pm
so now all the pressure bases loaded and none down for hunter f we'll have the infield draw in. so the guy that missed the last 32 games because of the groin injury, he has the bases loaded. he was one for five. an rbi of morales thrown it first. now he is really playing it here. of tori hunter down 2-0. >> let's see how he handles it. what did bob say? sometimes you have to play into the after internal revenue service nature of the hitter. if he being overly aggressive. who is in trouble here is brian bass not you wanter. and centerfield a base hit and the angels get the lead.
5:41 pm
four consecutive singles. hunter bounced it and couldn't glove testimony the angels have broken here in the 13th. >> he gets it he almost catches this ball. you can see just a little late. got to reach over. that is probably another one of those one to three to offer actually one to two to three double plays if he catches it. >> now, he has to try to minimize the damage with the orioles coming up in the bottom of the 13th. still nobody out. matt is get being loose behind him. rivera morales and hunter thi to first. aybar nine runs on 199.
5:42 pm
here comes dave trembley. we are going to get a pitching change. he is going to go to matt albers to take over for brian bass. bases loaded none down, angels have the lead back 9-8 in the 13th. in the dark. no peanuts or nothin'. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25. that's just plain mean. why do they hate your bags? at southwest airlines, bags fly free. grab your bag. it's on! ( ding ) is if you run into a friend and you want to share a photohone, with a flick, there's an app for that.
5:43 pm
