so, really important job by a guy who is not expected to be, a guy who is going to help carry them down the stretch. >> boston was the team to claim wagner. what could he provide for them. >> well, if he throwes like he did the other night, 95-miles-per-hour, and slider, he can help a lot of teams with that. the question is, are the red sox going to be able to arrange a deal? are they willing to take on the money? 3.5 million this year, and buy university for next year. so, there's some financial concerns. but, we don't know if he can pitch back-to-back days, and keep his velocity. but, what the heck, i would try it. always use another lefty. >> rangers and rays got a bit of a break, in what the yankees did to boston. not today. so, back up again, on that standing. so, rangers and rays are out there.

and angels and bluejays going at it. and angels, watching what ta*erbgsdz is doing. trying to avoid their first three-game losing-streak, and izturis, and lind, going for the catch, and oh, just drops the ball. two runners come in. turning point in the game. >> one of the real keys to the angels. they get production, 1-9 in the order and they don't have an out. they can all hit. >> the thing turned lind made up for it. hits this three-run homerun. and that's vlad, the impaleler, launching that one, 11th of the year. >> he's back over .300. 11 homeruns, and someone asked me if he's a hall of hall of famer? >> hello, he's a hall of famer. >> a homerun.

doesn't fall, and angels go on to win, 7-3. good look at the red sox and yankees. they always overshadow everything that the angels do. what do you make have them? they have a great offensive-team. they're on pace to score about 200 more runs than they did last year. hitting well over .300. with runners in scoring position. and their pitching is coming back. saunders will start next week, and another good game today. i like that team way more than i liked them last year. >> cubs are in every series. but, in one with the dodgers, and here they are, here's ted lilly, looking to win ten high games. and kemp.d way back >> watch where this ball lands. over the hedges? follow that's over everything. a i'm not sure how many times i

7:39 pm
the buyer. are they going to get this team? >> yes, this is a good thing for the cubs. they've been waiting for a long time for this to happen, and now that they have some stability, they can start to move. i have asked a few times, what are they going to do? well, we'll have to see about ownership of the team. now, we know that the team is going to be in good hands. >> they'll have some decisions to make, when the process comes. but, lou came out and said he expects to be the manager. will he be the manager? there and i think he will be. knowing lou, he came there to win a world series with the cubs. and wants to get in the hall of fame as a manager. if he walks away, after this season some, they don't make the playoffs, and at this point they won't, i just can't imagine him walking out of this situation, after this. i think they have to take a long, hard look at that club, and ask is this good enough for next year?
7:40 pm
no. but he won't give up until he does something better than what they have done this year. >> that's looking way ahead to next year. how about tomorrow? john smoltz likely to make his first start as a cardinal. is this going to work out better than in boston. >> well, it can't work out worse. league hit .343 against him. he'll do much better, i believe, because he's back in the national league. and it's an easier league in which to pitch and he's working with dave duncan, and he's the master of taking a guy, figuring out what's wrong, and fixing it. i'm not saying he will be the john smoltz of old. but better than the fifth-starter they've been using and as good a competitor, and as smart as any pitcher today, and i think he can pitch five innings and give up three runs, and that's all fifth starters give anybody today, anyway. >> he's one of the few players, that would have firsthand

experience about being a professional, about the next topic. he was in the majors when the 20th anniversary of the ban of pete rose took place. we know the whole story here. mike schmidt wrote a piece today, taking the stance it is time to reinstate him. he always bet on his team to win. so there was no shift there and if the steroid error greats are in consideration for the hall, who shamed the game more. >> i have to disagree with him, because he bet on his team to win, doesn't necessarily get him out of this. the days he didn't bet on them to win, he probably thought they were going to lose. that's a very unsavory subject. i don't think he'll be reinstated anytime soon. there was no indication, from
7:42 pm
bud, that he had changed his stance on that. me, on pete rose, i think he should be up for the hall of fame. i think people should vote for him, on the hall of fame. and if he got the option, he would not be voted in. i don't think the veterans committee would do it. if they if they gave the writers a chance, i don't think he would. i don't think he'll be reinstated to the game, to be a coach or manager. i'm not sure that's that's going to happen. with bud selig, i'm not sure, it's in the cards with him coming back. >> hank aaron and mike schmidt and joe morgan. there are some that are, powerful names in the sport, are saying take a look at this. >> bud selig does listen to people, and he listens to hank aaron. but, i don't sense, that even though people came out, and supported him and mike schmidt, but, i didn't sense, in the middle of july, that anything
