tv   Tonight From Washington  CSPAN  August 26, 2009 8:00pm-11:00pm EDT

8:00 pm
. >> jim: the dome is in its final season, and tonight the orioles play their final game against the twins at the dome. it's orioles baseball on masn tonight from minneapolis.
8:01 pm
it's the finale of this three- game series, as the 0 orioleling get set to take any the twins. the birds looking for a win tonight on the final game of the series before heading home for a home stand and looking to bounce back from a frustrating loss last night, a game they felt get away in particular because of early missed opportunities. the orioles for the game just 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, early on in the game when they could have broken it open, they left 8 men on base in the first four innings, including leaving the bases loaded in consecutive inning, and twice in the game, they allowed minnesota to come back after the orioles scored and the orioles eventually grew blew a 6-3 lead. buck, when you lob attie games on this trip, in particular last night, three one-run losses, all of those opportunities are huge. >> buck: well, it sure is a big problem, when when you're playing teams like tampa bay, boston, and minnesota, they're
quote
8:02 pm
looking for post-game opportunities. last light night the first two pitch next ball game walked 7 orioles, and they couldn't capitalize on the wideness of those starters. >> jeremy guthrie won at chicago, and looking to put back to back good starts. >> buck: he really did a good job in chicago. used he first ball very effectively. i think for jerusalem guthrie, -- jeremy guthrie, he has to work to finish the season strong.
8:03 pm
8:04 pm
8:05 pm
the orioles close out t nine-game road trip. normal reimold has had a heck of a trip, and continues to make a case that he should get support for rookie of the year. >> buck: he sure does. >> jim: i spoke with him about facing big league pitching day- in and day-out. >> yeah, i guess it's a little bit of an adjustment facing this good of pitching a on consistent base, but just one of those things where night in and night out, you just have to bear down ask concentrate and
8:06 pm
have good at bats, and, you know, it's -- you've seen guys like this before, but just not on this consistent of a basis. >> jim: one of the aspect ross your game that is fascinating because of your lack of experience is how selective you are at the plate. have you accumulated that and acquired that as you've played, oral was had it? >> i guess i've developed it over the course of time, after so many at bats in the might be leagues, because i guess when i first came into the organization, i struck out a lot more, chased a lot more bad pitches, not to say i don't chase them now, but seem to be doing better at that. >> i would imagine that has to be a big confidence factor, because in particular when you have two strikes, you do take some close pitches against the calls, as opposed to chasing and helping a pitcher out. >> yeah, well, taking with two strikes, you don't want to take two close pitches, or else you get rung up, but when you do have a good eye, more selective
8:07 pm
at the plates, steps the umpires help you out a little bit more, so just one of those things where you take pitches, try to get a feel for the zone, and then go from there. >> it's been a tree year of achievement for you, because you didn't make the club out of spring training even though you played well, and then instead of going to aaa, you did the opposite. you played in 31 games, and had base hits in 27 of the 31, what that tells me is you as a prospect were thoughing the organization don't forget about me down here, and that's what quote both you the premotion. >> yeah, absolutely. coming into the year, i didn't expect to make the team at spring training, so just hope to have a good year at norfolk, and eventually get up here playing well. but i just went down there, did my thing, and got the ton to come up here, and it worked out for me, and i'm excited to be up here. >> do you feel like you did it the way a prospect should? you were a third round draft pick, had to make the study progress, but ill think there's something to the achievement of
8:08 pm
that, that you earned your way here, wasn't any our reason. >> yeah, i think i had to put up good numbers to move up the levels, so i think i did that, and, you know, it's one of the thins where that's how i would like to get up here. i felt like i've earned my way a little more because i played in the minor leagues for so long and developed, and got a lot better, so when i got up here, i felt like i was ready to contribute. there the other part of your gain that you appear to be a seasoned veteran already is your base running. you hustle out of the box every play, which is admirable, everyone should do it, you definitely do it, but you seem to have a mac on the basis. is that what it is, you have the instincts to be a good base runner? >> well, it's just one of those this i true i to hustle every play, get as much as i can, you know, squeak a little ground ball out, you know, you always have a chance to get a base hit if you hustle down the line. so i try to do that as much as i can, and squeak out a few
8:09 pm
more extra base hits. >> so nolan reimold has earned the art of hustle. he's had 7 steals. he had good road trip. let's go down stairs and welcome in mark viviano. >> mark: brian robbers is able to play. last night while attempting a diving play at second base, he suffered some swelling in his glove hand. that swelling has gone down. if you see these guys in the clubhouse, you see a number of them with their arms and legs packed in ice. dave trembley pointed out that brian rob experts nick markakis are his warriors this year. >> jim: there's brian on deck. let's get a look at the southwest airlines starting line-up force the finale of this three-game series.
8:10 pm
now a i time blackburn. fastball, curveball, slider and change-up. 0-4 is this record in the second half. and he's having a lot of trouble with left-handed hitters. they've been on him, hitting well over .300. he'll have to make and i a justment if he hopes to contribute to this pennant race here in minnesota. they need to have starting pitching consistency if they're going to get back in it. he's got to improve upon that. >> the orioles to have certain left-handed swingers in their line-up tonight. the only available bat from the left side on the ben such matt wieters, a switch hitter, and robbers fouls it back, and
8:11 pm
we're under way. >> jim: blackburn, his best secondary pitch is his curveball. got that over fairly consistently in the latter stages of his last start. >> jim: buck mentioned the long winless drought for blackburn. his last win was july 10th against the white sox. he has made certain starts since, and has not won a game. roberts ground ball to first. right there is morneau. he'll flip to back burn. one away in the oriole first. >> well, the twins very good defencism.
8:12 pm
that's important for nick blackburn. he has a lot of balls put into play.
8:13 pm
. >> buck: that ball jus into lift field. watch this. head stays right down on the ball, and he drives it right into left field. very short quick approach to the ball. >> jim: izturis on with a one out single. he and reimold have flip- flopped spots in the batting order from last night's game. and there's a fastball for a strike. 0-1. luke has a two-game hitting streak going, which doesn't sound like much. however, when you think of the struggles he has had in the second half of the season, that's a starting point. trying to find a stroke and get comfortable and gain some kind of consistency here down the stretch. and there's a line drive to center field. there's a base hit. so he has a hit in three
8:14 pm
straight games now, and two on with one down in the first inning. so look scott gets on, and nick markakis coming to bat right now over all is probably the orioles hottest hitter. >> buck: and he has been a consistent hitter, a guy that's able to get hits just about any night he's in the line-up, but nice in the line-up every single night. last night he got an inside fastball and drove it off the baggy in right field. good speed, good consistency, and leads the orioles in average at .308, and 157 hits lead this way. >> jim: orioles with the fans for a first inning lead, and markakis takes a strike, 0-1. >> buck: we had mentioned how blackburn struggles against licensed hitters, and already two hits in the first three at bats, and he has to deal with a red hot nick markakis.
8:15 pm
>> jim: one down. minnesota has the defense aligned for a ground ball to turn two. markakis fouls it back towards the left. 0-2 on markakis. >> buck: that ball got in on nick's hands pretty well. reaching back for a little extra on his fastball and kind of caught nick back over the plate, couldn't get it extended. >> jim: nick pops it up. that's back in the crowd. >> buck: right now nick is trying to gauge the velocity of blackburn. with two strikes, obviously you can't be as aggressionive and have to let the ball travel so you don't chase pitches out of
8:16 pm
the zone. that's why that fastball can get on you from time to time. >> jim: markakis in 24 games in august has base hits in 21 of those. the 0-2 is foul, protecting the outside corner. >> buck: yeah, got his change- up down and away. that's a good piece of hitting right there just to protect the plate and keep the at bat alive. had a lot of movement on it. touch pitch with two strikes. >> jim: izturis at second, scott at first. back to back singles after the brian roberts ground out. 0-2 on markakis. just inside, 1-2. >> buck: mauer made that look a little better than it
8:17 pm
actually was. >> jim: a ball and two strikes. swill -- blackburn really not a strikeout pitcher. >> buck: anytime you get a breaking ball this far in front of home plate, not sure where it's going to go, and he plays it off his forearm, just got as big as possible over in front of that ball. don't really know how high it's going to bounce with it hit so hard in front of home plate. that's a benefit of being 6'5". got a lot of body to block balls with. >> jim: there's a chopper hit slowly towards first. morneau will have to hurry, gets it to blackburn just in tile. markakis is retired. the runners move up. izturis to third, and scott to second, but now two men are out. >> buck: well, justin morneau knows that markakis always runs
8:18 pm
up the line, and look how quickly he shovels the ball to blackburn. just a half a step ahead of markakis. >> jim: so markakis retired. two men down as blackburn tries to get out of it. here is nolan reimold. >> buck: these are the situations we had talked about in the open. scoring opportunities early. you have to grind, have good at bats, be and do whatever it takes to get at least one of these runs in here. >> jim: reimold takes a strike at the knees. >> buck: and jim in your interview with reimold, he talked about being patient. think because of his confidence, he doesn't swing at borderline pitches early. >> jim: there's that batting eye buck referred to. a close pitch, but he got the call. 1-1. >> buck: and obviously so many
8:19 pm
of these pitches for nolan reimold are new to him, doesn't know them, not really familiar with what they throw or where the release point is, so it's all about getting as much information as you can quickly. >> jim: strike on the outside corner. that time blackburn got the call, and it's 1-2. talk about his amazing consistency that earned him the promotion. base hits in 27 out of 31 games, that has to get company noticed, and it did, and reimold got the call, and he has kept it up. he's really developing into a fine young hitter. down in the counsel here, 1-2 -- down in the count here, 1-2, and it's low, 2-2. izturis singled. he's at third now. scott followed him with a single. he's at seconds, but two men out. >> buck: last night, the orioles scored three in the second, but they also stranded
8:20 pm
8 runners in the first four innings. >> jim: and we count at 2-2 on reimold, blackburn slowing down his pace. and reimold fouls off a good breaking ball. dave trembley looking on with the crow. blackburn has already thrown 21 pitches in this first inning. trying to prevent either of those two runners from scoring. 2-2 is outside. ball 3. >> buck: well, you see some pretty close pitches, and reimold has the ability to identify quickly ball or strike, that one was well out of the zone, but you get anxious with two strikes. you see, it's about six inches
8:21 pm
off the plate away. stopped through, and the long throw across is beyond, and two runs will score!
8:22 pm
>> jim: aubrey dh'ing for the first time as an oriole. he has a five-game hitting streak going. and reimold draws a throw. nolan has seven steals in nine attempts on the year. so reimold had a very productive at bat, fell behind,
8:23 pm
worked it full. the paul nearly got into left field. cabrera with a nice effort on the front end, but an errant throw on the back end. popped up, second baseman casilla is calling, and he has it for the out, and the inning is over, but the orioles do get on the board. to the bottom of the first. twins are coming up.

ball hit toward this middle. there's a base hit. benard span gets on with a lead off single, and minnesota copping right back on guthrie. well, tonight wired wednesday, we'll talk with dave trembley if the third ining, and then in
8:27 pm
the 5th in, matt beaters will join us. he's not in the starting line- up tonight, so an opportunity to visit with matt. >> orlando cabrera picked up in
8:28 pm
a trade with oakland. >> buck: joe didn't want to bring up, you know, playing outdoors in minnesota next year in the new ballpark, if they're hoping to resign him. >> unfortunately in oakland in the summertime, nights are pretty cool. can be be aen comfortable place to hit on a regular basis.
8:29 pm
>> buck: he was getting into a throwing motion, anticipating a throw to second base.
8:30 pm
second, back to first, and out at first. izturis felt that ball was hit so hard, he would try to get two, but stan --
8:31 pm
>> now a 327 patting average. that is tops in the league. also has the best average against right-handed pumping, and he's facing guthrie here tonight. since minnesota drafted mauer out of high school, the first overall pick in 2001, and he
8:32 pm
got here very fast. high fly ball, reimold has it for the out, and two down. so mauer is retire. so one dangerous hitter retired, but here comes another, a home-run threat. >> buck: yeah, last night in the third inning, justin morneau goes deep. hits the high fastball off
8:33 pm
matusz. they have kept mauer and morneau, though, relatively quiet. >> jim: hors in two seasons has hit -- morneau in two soaps has hit 30 or more home runs. >> buck: well, throughout this series, the orioles pitchers have really pitched well to this part of the orderer, and & they've done it effectively by pounding the fastball inside, both mauer and morneau are guys who like to really extend their arms, get them fully extended
8:34 pm
out over the plate. >> jim: 1-1 is in there for a strike. breaking ball. >> buck: morneau thought it was a little high. had a pretty good look at it, just felt like it was high for a called strike. now he has to change his approach a little bit, and he is in a situation to drive in a run, and possibly tie this game up with two outs. >> jim: a ball and two strikes on morneau. span at second. two down. and a called strike three! get this call at the knees, and that ends the inning. so a lead off single and a man left. good job by guthrie. time for a smash and the orioles have a 2-0 lead. across the country every day. pa announcer: final boarding call... all passengers... each with an average speed of 590 mph... almost as fast as you. nothing's gonna hold you down.

8:37 pm
>> the hop, and just in time to get wiggington down the line, and one away. felix pie is coming up, let's visit with viv. >> mark: for those who have had a chance to meet felix, a very fun loving guy, but today still tee respondent over his two base running errors last night. he said, though, he's trying to forget about it, it's a lesson learned for him, and he's happy to be back there n the line-up. >> it's fortunate he has an opportunity to get right backny the fame, because he can erase the memories of a very forgettable night for him. with adam jones still bored by a bad back, he has a chance to
8:38 pm
get back in the start. adam said his back is a little better, and he thinks the might be able to play tomorrow. >> lofts it to the second baseman casilla, and two down. here are the plays that mark is revenuing to in last night's game. two base running mistakes if the same game. >> buck: yeah, in the fourth in, be a hit-and-run by normal reimold, and pie didn't keep track of the ball. it was a base hit to right field, and later on, he and markakis get crossed up. he gets spiked by markakis, and this is the one that really was a killer. a pop up in front of the orioles doingout. it was morneau that cat the ball, but he tagged, and in that situation, you have a for 100 percent shore should you can mack it. at the time, there were no outs. >> and that helped run the orioles out of an in, be because instead of a runner at second and one down, the bases
8:39 pm
were empty with two down. the one thing you to like about what viv was taking about is that pie tookibility for his own mistakes.
8:40 pm
-- took responsibility for his mistakes. you have to be very sure when a ball is popped up within the confines of the infield, no reason to think that you can tag up. >> jim: so from 0-2 to 3-2, and chad poller draws a walk. well, in this chat with the media before the game, mark asked the skipper dave trembley about a perception that all of these base running mistakes are in some way a reflex on the coaching staff. >> coach doesn't tell you know when to go or when to stop. when you're out there playing this game, you're on your own. terry crowley doesn't yell from her and tell somebody how to hold a pat. can't teach them to hit in the
8:41 pm
batters box. can't teach them to run the bases during the game. and i actually with that a hundred percent, but what the players have to do is take responsibility for knowing the count. even brian roberts forgot how many outs there were on a home stand, and ran on a pop-up with just one out. but you just have to a mental checklist and you check everything off. right now, two outs. if you see that bat going through the hitting zone, you're thinking about going on contact, because there's no reason to be hesitant. so there's a little mental check list. what's the store, who is on, who is at the plate. who is in the outfield. what kind of arms do they have. can i go first to third, if all of these kinds of things, just a very quick mental check list. >> and brian roberts hits it the opposite way. that's in for a base hit. young has it. so brian roberts one out of two. already two at bats in this game, and the orioles have two
8:42 pm
on after two men down. jo that's the beauty of that two-out walk that blackburn issued to mohler. turned the line-up over. now you have two on, and izturis batting, and he already has a hit in this game. >> jim: izturis singled to left field for the orioles first hit. he came on to score. izturis to right field. that ball is hit well. scudder reaches up, and maybes the catch. he halls it in for the out. cuddyer makes a nice play and the orioles cannot score. @
8:43 pm
8:44 pm
. >> jim: jason kubeldhs lea off the person machine second.
8:45 pm
hard hit ball to first. luke scott has it, and he'll go to the ball unassisted. well, the learning process continues for luke, and how about that, you snap your finger, the ball is on you. >> buck: well, that's the hardest hit ball luke has had to deal with at first base. this is just his fourth start, and he has a little smile on his face, i did it. i did it. he hit it hard. no problem, had it all the way. the guy has good hands. don't worry about it. >> jim: one out, none on, let's go, hit it again. well, where has luke been if the line-up in this series? he's had one start as a dh. last night he started in lift field for the first time -- in left field for the first time since july, and tonight he is starting at first base. broke be bat ball hit towards
8:46 pm
brian roberts who gets a big hop. michael cuddyer is retired, and two quick outs in the second inning. >> buck: well, jeremy obviously has all of the pitches necessary to have a lot of success. the last few starts he's been able to keep the ball over the barrel of the bat, down 0 to the end, like they did with cuddyer right there. the biggest thing for him is just to really focus and try to finish up strong. this is his 26th start of the season. probably will have 7 more starts, a chance to build some momentum to take that into the off-season and get ready for next spring. >> jim: there's a strike to young. the orioles still are talking about that six-man rotation once the roster is expanded, so that would take away at least one problem. there is the ball to the hole.
8:47 pm
izturis has it, plants the long throw, scooped by lance scott, and it's a 3 up and 3 down inning. so luke scott tested the first and last batters, and guthrie retires the side in order. @ú@t hey, coach billick? what? we need to open this coors light cooler... for some frost-brewed refreshment. do you know the combination? go double right, turbo right, double pump. coach, it's not working! tandem right, fake peel, liz san diego! forget it, coach. we're gonna wedge it open with a crowbar. let's wedge it, let's wedge it. i'm trying!
8:48 pm
frost-brewed coors light. official beer sponsor of the nfl. coach, we still can't get into the coors light. you're gonna have to come up here. time out, time out. he's coming! . >> jim: wired wednesday, let method down to the dugout. manager addition trembley joins us. buck and i just took a vote and we gave luke scott the gold
8:49 pm
glove. >> yeah, i asked juan if he wanted to yell out and ask if he wanted the baseball. >> jim: that's the first time he's really been tested, but hip handled it smoothly. >> yeah webb that was nice. >> how about reimold in the first inning. >> jim: ion, he laid off some bored -- you know, he laid off some borderline pitches if other games that might be called strikes, but he shows a lot of patience at the plate. that was a big hit for us, and guthrie put a desire roy up after that. >> buck: how important is it for a rookie to come up and hit in the middle of the order for you in a season, and obviously he has earned your confidence? >> jim: you know, it's tough. we haven't done that with jones last year and a lot of these guys, beaters and guys we feel are going to be run producers for once but he showed such a good eye at the plate, and a real good demeanor that i moved him around a little bit, two,
8:50 pm
three, five. you know, he can do a lot of things, and he can run, take a walk, use the other side of the field. i hit-and-run with him last night. he's been a real nice player for us. >> jim: how is it that there are certain hitters if they have two strikes, it doesn't seem to matter, they're still confident they can pick out a switch and get a good swing? >> i think it's in allenning of the strike zone and using the whole field to hit. they don't get geared into looking at one spot, and they look at territory other side of the diamond. >> jim: morneau gets it to blackburn. one down. >> buck: one final question about guthrie. he's off to a good start here. how important is it for jeremy to finish off on a positive start here his last 7 or 8 starts down the stretch? >> it's important for him and for the team. he has to set the tone for all of these young guys going down the last month or so of the season here, and show them what
8:51 pm
it's all about, and guthrie is very capable of doing that. i think he's, you know, coming off that start against the white sox, hopefully it can continue for him. he's going to be face something real tough opponents in the month of september, and as competitive as he is, he is a guy that won't shy away from it. >> jim: all right, dave, we appreciate the visit. >> you're welcome. >> that's manager dave trembley joining us here on wired wednesday from the bench.
8:52 pm
>> jim: 1-2 on markakis. well off the plate. 2-2. the orioles are 3-5 on this trip, and 3 of those five losses have been by one run. markakis to center field. span back on it, waits for it, two down in the oriole third inning well, don't forget the yankees are making their final trip of 2009 to oriole park next week, a three-fame series against the birrs starts on
8:53 pm
monday. -- the birds starts on monday. seats still available but going fast. for your tickets, orioles.com. noel everyone reimold fouls it off. -- nolan reimold fouls it off. it's 0-1. the orioles future is without a doubt a positive future because of players like nolan reimold. after our interview today chatting with him, the one thing that you really see is the poise that they have, buck, and nolan is just one of the group, but he is certainly an important part of the group. and they really like the fact that so many of them are here together and they are the nucleus of of what this franchise is about to be moving forward. they sip it, they thrive on it. >> buck: yeah, and i think they are quietly confident. not a whole lot of them that are loud and outgoing, but they have a lot of confidence.
8:54 pm
they file like they belong and they're learning here. the thing that this ball club has to do is they have to learn how to win, and being close is great, and having improve system great, but what you have to do is learn how to win. >> jim: reimold to left field. back on it is young. span is there as well, and the center fielder calls him off and maybes the catch. so the orioles for the first time tonight go three up and three down. he mrs. lowenberg next door. w? i don't know she's wandering around the lobby, yammering about fios tv, internet and phone all for $79.99 a month. she seems crazy. actually, fios customers get that price for six months. it's like getting three services for the price of two. so am i the one that's crazy? no? 8:58 pm
8:59 pm
>> he is throwing a curve ball. that has some late bite to it. many times during the course of this stage, it was just kind of a roller, just roll up there, and didn't have the effective bite on it that we're seeing here tonight. casilla down on strike. back to back ks. two down. >> buck: anotherr good breaking ball from guthrie.
9:00 pm
>> jim: here isspan. >> buck: no stride whatsoever. just kind of pushes back on that front foot. a little bit what paul molitor did, the hall of famer. ended up here with the twins. just enough push back on that front foot that there's really no stride involved at all.
9:01 pm
izturis has to hurry, and in time to get span. nicely done yet again by izturis. three up and three down go minnesota. 2-0 o's. @x@0@p@0@6p)@)@)p,

9:03 pm
. >> jim: chad mohler on the bench talking with matt wieters. going to see quite a bit of that the wrist of the way. here is michael aubrey, first ball swinging. ground ball to second. calcite has him at first. one down. >> aubrey said before the game that something he did a lot in the minor leagues and is a challenge for him is keeping a clear head in between at bats because he can't go out in the field to have any ereef if he has a bad at bat. to that end, i say him deep in the corridors at the metrodome,
9:04 pm
out for a long solitairey walk by himself. that's where he was seeking that clear head. didn't pay off in that at bat. maybe he'll head pack out to the corridor and get better results next time.
9:05 pm

. >> buck: my first was harold baines. that's how bad i was. harold doesn't say anything. hair old, you have a good spring? >> jim: when he was with the birds, he was a man of very few words, and still is, and said it will probably be the shortest acceptance speech in the history of the oar yeahs hall of fame. >> buck: oh, what a great player. great player, great person, has a chance to come back home where he played so well for the orioles sore so many years. but, yeah, i'm a nervous wreck. it's spring training, and working for the blue jays, and the producer says go get an interview, somebody you know that you're comfortable with, and of course i knew harold very well, i just forgot he didn't talk much. tough interview. >> jim: if he was with the
10:21 pm
orioles and was the radio pregame show guest, which ran about three and a half minutes, you would probably have to ask him about 17 questions. >> buck: oh, absolutely. and he wasn't being rude or short with you. just he was a man of few words. still is. >> jim: but he's a fine gentleman and a man of character, to doubt about it. and he's from st. michaels, so his family will be able to watch him get inducted to the home town to team.
10:22 pm
i know a lot of the players are anxious to get home as ty wiggington takes high. orioles also hope to get adam jones back in the line-up tomorrow. that ball is ripped towards right center field. that's a base hit. cuddyer is over to cut it off. reimold'sly to for third. here is the throw, off line, and that allows wiggington to
10:23 pm
get down into second base! so reimold forced the issue you there, poor through by cuddyer, and wiggington alertly hustles into second base. >> buck: well, reimold made a very aggressive move, why not, you're up by three, force the defense to make a good play. a good arm, but the throw is wide. the throw is to the outfield side of third, and alertly, right behind reimold, ty wiggington moves into scoring position at second. >> jim: so after a night of frustrating base running mistakes last night, the orioles here aggressively get two in scores position with one down. and here is ron garden hire out for another pitching change. so the birds have something going, second and third, one down in the 8th. ÷x÷:l:lzúz0z
10:24 pm
10:25 pm
10:26 pm
. >> jim: guerrier in to pit down and in on felix pie, 1-0. ty wiggington going back to second base will watch as he comes off. he is fully taking advantage of where orlando cabrera is. look how big this lead has got to be before guerrier throws the pitch. inside, ball 2. >> buck: well, he does take the lead, and you're going to see when he gets off the bag, he's going to be back in this area. and that's important because that improves his angle. comes
10:27 pm
so there goes e strategy. now they'll liget the double-play to end the inning. bases loaded.
10:28 pm
>> buck: the minimum you want here, of course, is one run in, sac fly, hit something deep to the outfield. mohler would love to hit another double and drive in all three. here is the 2-0, a called strike.
10:29 pm
>> jim: that one inside. ball 3. so 3-1 to moeller, and nowhere to put him. bases full of birds, and one down. orioles looking for some insurance here in the 8th. and time was called at the plate. >> buck: wow, that was really late. moeller was in the box, the umpire calls time. watch the pitcher. boy, that's too late. moeller had raised his hand, asked the umpire, and the umpire granted him time-out, but guerrier was into his delivery. >> jim: 3-1 the count on moeller. looked like it was a strike, as well, and it's inside, ball 4. so matt guerrier walks moeller
10:30 pm
to force in a run, and back to back walks for guerrier coming on here in the 8th. the intentional walk to pie, and the four-pitch walk to chad moeller. >> buck: three walks in the inning gives the orioles some insurance. boy, that's a big run, that 5th run right there? and brian roberts with a chance to bust this thing wide open. >> jim: outside, ball one. guerrier is out of shaker heights, ohio. he was originally drafted and signed by the pirates, and minnesota got him on a waiver claim. he's been in the twins organization since 2004. rick peterson, the pitching coach, is going to come in. >> buck: loosening up in a
10:31 pm
hurry, as guerrier is having a tough time finding the strike zone. >> jim: rick answer son having a chat with -- anderson having a chat with guerrier just to give him a breather here. brian has won hit tonight, one out of four. he began the night tied for 10th in the league in base hits, and now has 147. he is still leading the league in doubles with 48. takes one on the corner. 1-1. >> buck: little bronx cheer from the people here at the metrodome. >> jim: ball and a strike on
10:32 pm
roberts. outside, ball 2. good hitter's count here, bases loaded, 2-1. and fouled straight down on the plate and rolls up the first base side. >> buck: ball right at the bottom of the strike zone. all brian could do is just chop half of it, but it right into the dirt. boy, this would be a big hit. one of those patented brian roberts doubled to clear the bases. >> jim: wiggington at third, pie at second, and moeller at first. 2-2 on roberts. run in on the bases loaded walk to moeller. outside, ball 3. nowhere to put
10:33 pm
him. 3-2. and as matt guerrier gets a sign. ground ball, fielded there by morneau. he comes to the plate. out attie plate. that's all they have, but they cut off the run, as morneau went down to the ground to get it, takes a base hit away from roberts, and keeps a run from scoring from third base. >> buck: boy, i'll tell you what, morneau mass great hands. stabs it, and gets to his feet. watch the hesitation there, regrip this baseball, gets the force out at the play of wiggington, but they had a shot at a double-play if he comes out of his glove cleanly with that, but he robbed brian roberts of a base hit right there. >> jim: so two down, and here
10:34 pm
is cesar izturis. ball one outside. ground ball toward this middle. there is casilla again. in the flip, and tout at second base! he's donn it's again! takes a base hit away from cesar izturis and prevents the orioles from adding to their lead. what a night with the glove for casilla.
10:35 pm

10:37 pm
see if casilla keeping the twins as close as they are. two runs would have scored in that one had gotten through. >> buck: on two plays tonight, casilla has saved three runs. >> jim: fouls it back. guthrie in 7 innings did not walk a batter.
10:38 pm
the bullpen will be asked to get six outs. and even though at the moment it is not a save situation, jim johnson has not pitched in his series, so it's likely we will see jim johnson in the 9th inning. and baez will try to keep it
10:39 pm
nice and tide by here in the 8th. >> buck: well, danny baez is going to wait to throw his pitches. there's in some knuckle head here on the field, we're not going to show you that, but security is removing him, and baez will have to throw a couple of contra pitches just to stay -- a couple of extra pitches just to stay loose here. >> jim: not only does it disrupt the pitcher on the mound, but disrupt this hitter at the plate who is trying to get on base and get a rally going here. so danny baez comes on. danny has not pumped in his
10:40 pm
series, so he is certainly well- rested.
10:41 pm
the way the pitch leaves danny baez, it appears to have more velocity on it than the radar gun shows. 91 is a good fastball, but but it appears to be better than that.
10:42 pm
check swing and he went to far, and cabrera slams his bat, and he's ejected. a very quick ejection as he slammed the bat. and now cabrera is lecturing the young umpire. ron gardenhire now pleading his case. >> buck: yeah, that's a little bit quick right there in that situation. cabrera was walking back toward this dugout. >> jim: he did slam the bat, and tissuer in throws him out. -- icstner. i mean, obviously cabrera did not like the call, but now ron gardenhire has missed a shortstop. >> buck: yeah, he went after the pitch, and you can interpret that as him being frustrated with himself, he was obviously frustrated west the umpire, but up don't think that was something that warranted
10:43 pm
his ejection by any means. he was walking back towards the digout. didn't stand there in the umpires face and hit home plate with it. >> jim: here is joe mauer, and he takes a strike. so cabrera could not check in time on that splitter by danny baez, and the orioles get the call. there is another strike on the inside corner, and now the fans are getting on tischner. office joe mauer is their favorite player here. if he takes a pitch, they think it's a bull. >> buck: yeah, and you can see it's clearly over the plate, 93 miles an hour. >> jim: the 0-2, ground ball
10:44 pm
towards second. back to first, and there's a double-play to end the inning. so 4-6-3 erases the lead off walk. we'll head to the 9th inning at the dome, the orioles with a 5- 1 lead. we've got a ton of stuff we've gotta pay for. and a few things we want to pay for. on top of it all, we're still trying to put away some money for the future. with the wish list, we can save up for anything we want. and still have enough to cover the day-t0-day. plus, the savings engine helps our money grow. and that's something we need and want. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.
10:45 pm
10:46 pm
. >> jim: the ejection of cabrera couldn't come at a worse time for ron gardens will hire, because he had already pinch hitted. >> buck: cuddyer has played a lot of second base, so not like
10:47 pm
he's a stranger out there. >> jim: 1-1 the count, and there's a base hit up the mid- approximately son melvin gets on with a lead-off base hit.
10:48 pm
markakis fly ball right center field. gomez, and span. gomez has it for the out. one away to end the oriole 9th inning.
10:49 pm
10:50 pm
>> buck: reimold got it going if the first inning. with an infield hit, with two down. gets it to cuddyer, back to first, if time. 6-4-3. casilla does it from either side of the second base
10:51 pm

10:53 pm
check swing and he fouled i off. muscle broke his bat. >> buck: really have to tip car cap to the orioles pitchers tonight, as they have neutralize add pretty potent attack here. twins just six hits and a run all night long. danny baez had a very good 8th
10:54 pm
inning. >> jim: 0-2 on morneau. and he got him. couldn't reach the pitch, down and away. strikeout for johnson. one away in the minnesota 9th. >> buck: yeah, this is a wicked fastball. you talk about town and away, and that's a great hitter, who looks overmatched with that fastball running away from him at 95 miles an hour. >> jim: jason kubel is now dh'ing. 0 for 3. that's a strike. may have gone a piece of that, it bounced and sounded like it hit chad moeller's chin guard. 0-2 the count. >> buck: this ball really has
10:55 pm
a lot of movement on it as well. looked like it skipped right off the plate. >> jim: 0-2 on jason kubel. broken bat bouncer, roberts charges, off balance throw, and he got him! >> buck: boy, there's been some good defense in this entire series, and this is a good play by roberts. looked like it hit just off his glove. and here comes brian, do or die bare handed grab just in time to get kubel, across his body, right on the money, just ahead of kubel. >> jim: so here is cuddyer,
10:56 pm
minnesota dun to its final out. 1 for 3 with a single. >> jim: 1-2onn michael daddier. check swing and a breaking ball, appeal to first. >> buck: he went quite a ways
10:57 pm
with that breaking ball. looked like he took a pretty healthy cut. >> jim: so 2-2 on cuddyer. >> jim: izturis has a tough play, and out at first place as izturis gets cuddyer, and the orioles winner the finale! two outstanding defensive plays by the orioles to end the game. one by roberts on a broken bat, and the final out by izturis. >> buck: bare hand, running throw across his body, just in time to get cuddyer. two to good defensive playing in support of jim johnson here in the 9th. izturis had a terrific series defensively, and that is the final out, as they get michael cuddyer to end the game, and orioles salvage the game 5-1. >> jim: so the orioles winit.
10:58 pm
and now for buck martinez, and our entire crew, jim hunt are saying so long for the last time from the metrodome. tonight's telecast, a masn presentation. now let's head back to the studio to a happy recap. o's xtra. boat >> jeremy guthrie with 7 strong innings. >> he gave unsix hits, one earned run, another very good effort any his part. so it looks like jeremy guthrie is really starting to settle back into the way he was pitching for the last couple of years, and it couldn't come too
10:59 pm
soon. i don't care where it comes from, as long as it does come. >> we heard the story last week about him using more of his wrist when he's throwing the ball. has that become a factor these last few games if? >> i don't know if you're going to say he uses his wrist. you have to use your wrist to throw the ball, but maybe he's made some sort of an adjustment the way he releases the ball. i think jim palmer had a little to talk too him about, and they got together and started talking about these mechanical things. you know how good jim is with all of that, and i think guthrie may have picked up on something right there that hat helped him. but the tempo has slowed done. doesn't have that herky jerky motion where he's rushing himself through to the strike zone. he looks pretty strong right now, but looks nice and comfortable at the same ti
