lean back! re-donk-ulous! play on playa! so relax and run steady. cloudy skies. let's take a welcome at the starting lineup for cleveland brought to you by southwest airlines. >> the scouting report for jason berken, he throws all
8:01 pm
four pitches. he used his two-seam fastball effectively the last time out against the white sox. he needs to work down in the zone. i don't think there is any mystery about his movement and the ability to get ground balls when he is down in the bottom of that strike zone that was a very good formula for him against the white sox. he threw very well into the sixth inning and had two double plays because of the single and his fastball. his 18th start of the season for berken, just three wins. all of the numbers are something he would like to improve upon here as he winds down his first major league season. he works hard all the time in between trying to refine his pitches and make sure his location is as sharp as it can be. >> gary: and let the defensive work behind him, which it has. >> buck: it sure has, gary. markakis, and adam dunn is still dealing with the back issue. mora and izturis have been great in the last week or sot. mat wieters is behundred the
8:02 pm
plate. >> and with that, after the rain delay, we are yesterday r ready to go. grady sizemore led it off with a home run in the ballgame last night. sizemore against berken, and he will take the pitch for a strike. sizemore with the big bat in the lead-off spot. always the threat, the 18 home runs, 62 rbi's, the threat to put one out, especially northwesterly the ballgame where he'll sit on the fastball where the pitch ser getting ready to break into the game. >> he has become a pretty good power hitter. his average is off this year. he has been dealing with an elbow problem all year long. it has really robbed him of that free freedom to swing. the second half it has been a little bit better for him. >> sizemore with a one ball, one strike count. berken's delivery will be fouled away and he is 1-2. >> we're going to watch all night long as berken gets ahead just to see how they try to
8:03 pm
resolve the at-bats. often times 0-2, and then the indian hitter are very patient and work their way back into the count. hernandez left the game with a chance to win. the count will go to two balls and two strikes. >> buck: it looked like it slipped out of his hand. maybe there is moisture on his hand. he is all set. 2-2. >> gary: second base, brian roberts is back and he is up with it. the extra play gets sizemore out. one down. >> buck: we told you that he throws four pitches, and this is the two-seam fastball. it is kind of unusual because it is across the seam. this is a four-seam fastball. a little more velocity. a much straighter velocity. he throws the curve ball with 2 real big emphasis on the big finger along the seam. the slider is thrown with a
8:04 pm
much nighter handle and this is the same two-seam grip. >> gary: here is cabrera batting second who had an oh- fer three in the opener to the ball game last night. it is not easy to keep him off base. he is having a career year and just about every offensive category. 10 in average as a result of the numbers he's put up since the all-star break. the 10th leading average in the american league. cabrera has hit safely in 17 of the last 20 at a .366 clip. 1-1 delivery to him and that is on the outside corner for a strike. 1-2. >> buck: the one thing i lover about cabrera is the way he chokes up oh finance bat handle. that gives him tremendous bat control. he is not a power hitter. he is up about three inchessen the bat handle. >> gary: not many do this anymore. 1-2 delivery to him. great pitch down and in. fouled off. >> buck: the old nellie fapproach. >> gary: nellie had more bat under his hand than above.
8:05 pm
it didn't matter which part he hit with. >> buck: the one streak. >> gary: see, nothing even close to that kind of a bat in major league baseball anymore, the big handled bat. here is the 1-2 delivery to cabrera, aband he'll foul it away. fox wasn't trying to hit home runs, he was just trying to poke the ball and when he got jammed, he could muscle a pitch over the infield. hitters today want the slender handle so they can whip the pitch through the strike zone. here is the 1-2 delivery by berken that is in the air to left center field and that's going to be a gaper. over to get it, felix pie. cabrera will go into second base, and he's got a double as he punched that one against the orioles' defense that time for his 33rd two-bagger. >> buck: and you see, 33 doubles. you don't have to have that handle down on the end and run
8:06 pm
that bottom hand over the nob. a couple of hops up the wall and he takes take fastball away and drives it away from felix pie. it is just too much of the plate. it was up a bit higher than the two-seam fastballs he was throwing earlier. >> gary: and that look brought to you by northrop grumman, the information systems power house. shin-soo choo, the runner on at second base. he'll go on and fouls it back. >> buck: if you have not seen choo, look at his numbers, and he is truly a five-tool player. he can run, hit for average, for power. a good defender and throws very well. >> gary: the 0-1 count r count and a big 3-4 in the ballgame last night for choo. he, too, has had a red hot bat. wieters is going to have a word
8:07 pm
with berken. >> buck: the highest batting average among right fielders is .360, choo is .315 and there is nick markakis at .303. the offensive players, and think ear all right fielders an good outfielders and it is pretty impressive. >> gary: that is quite the list right there. 0-1 delivery growned foul outside of first base. a little bit off that pitch. and the count will go to 0-2 on choo. >> buck: choo came from seattle. he came up in the mariners' system and they traded him here. cabrera also from seattle at second base, and valbuena from seattle. >> gary: three major league players. >> buck: seattle -- if they had had all of these players back in seattle, we wouldn't be talking about the angels. >> gary: exactly. he chased. choo is retired. a strikeout for berken, two down. >> buck: there's a time to elevate a fastball, and this is the perfect time. 0-2, again, you could see
8:08 pm
tentative swing, trying to check his swing once he got it going. i love the fact that you're aggressive, 0-2. we talked about it a lot lately how hitters are most vulnerable when they're 0-2 and don't show a lot of pitches. i don't like that phrase waste 'pitches because i don't think you waste anything. >> gary: johnny peralta now with a runner at second base and two down. that was away with a ball. peralta did not start in the ballgame last night and ended up with an oh-fer one. there are the numbers he has put up on the season. .259 with runners in scoring position for jhonny peralta. he swung on and missed. down and away to the third baseman and the count will go to 1-1. berken has had some pretty good movement on the breaking balls that he's thrown here in this first inning. >> buck: it has been boosted by his last outing against the white sox. >> gary: and he did swing, but
8:09 pm
not by much. they were letting him wander out there and cabrera had nobody remotely close to the wag for two pitches an then brian roberts charging in and almost got him. >> buck: he sure did. he called for it with the bare hand and had he put his knee down, he could have blocked a base runner, but you can see the hand sneaks underneath the tag. >> gary: a call by the second base umpire. sheer the 1-1, and that will miss just inside. a two ball, one strike count on peralta. berken trying to get out of the inning without damage here. the first inning has been a troublesome one. he surrendered 18 first inning runs, more than any other. here is the 2-1 delivery and that one just misses. he falls we behind here, three balls and one strike on peralta. peralta has had his problems at the plate of late. only a couple of hits in 12 at- bats on this road trip. cleveland's in the midst of a
8:10 pm
10-game road trip. they've won three and lost one so far. they started in kansas city. and the 3-1 delivery on the way and that is a base hit into left field with ranker going, cabrera will score easily. the bat ended up flying off the backstop brick wall, but the ball ended up falling in for a single and a 1-0 lead. >> buck: you make a good pitch, and you break a bat and you hope that it's going to be at somebody, but this one goes over the infield. that's right down around the label. the bat shatters in his hands, and then a little flair as it is just over the shortstop's head and cabrera running with two outs scores easily. another first inning run for the indians. >> gary: peralta, two-out rbi. that is 68 on the year for peralta. now travis hafner will stand in with a runner on at first base and two counsel down. hafner, the designated hitter.
8:11 pm
that is taken for a strike. he had an oh-fer four in the opener last night. .273 with a 3 -- with 13 home run force travis hafner. he has had problems with the right should they are year that has bothered him, put him on the d.l. and required minor league rehab time. the delivery to him. he is going to go after it. ened the check at third did not go around with nelson down there and the count, 1-1. berken with a strikeout. the outfield deep and straight away. 1-1 delivery to him, the inside part of the plate foul 1-2. this cleveland team is playing baseball after they made some
8:12 pm
deals. they got rid of some names. since the all-star break, 22 wins and 16 losses. they have won 15 of their last 25. everyone wedge, only the cardinal cameras, yankees have better records since the july date. 1-2 delivery and swung on and policed and berken get as second strikeout. the indians, though, will get a run and a couple of hits. the orioles' lineup when we're . we mecome back. gecko: uh, you wanted to see me sir?
8:13 pm
boss: come on in, i had some other things you can tell people about geico - great claims service and a 97% customer satisfaction rate. show people really trust us. gecko: yeah right, that makes sense. boss: trust is key when talking about geico. you gotta feel it. why don't you and i practice that with a little exercise where i fall backwards and you catch me. gecko: uh no sir, honestly... uh...i don't think...uh... boss: no, no. we can do this. gecko: oh dear. vo: geico. fifteen minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.
8:14 pm
 >> gary: the starting lineup the o's brought to you by southwest airlines. melvin mora had a big night last night, five for his last eight. >> buck: the leeld scouting report for the indians, pho taw -- fastow carmona. they are really giving him a problem. he hasn't had the same sinking fastball that led him to so many last year. only two ground balls for every fly ball this year. in the past he has been as high as 4-1. fastow core moana remaking his own image this season and the strike taken by brian roberts. brian did not start in the ballgame last night. he came in at an oh-fer one. he is 4-17 off of carmenna. he
8:15 pm
star immediate the majors, went down to the minors and came back up, they say, a different pitcher. the numbers certainly say that. the e.r.a. down by about five runs. carmenna's batting average is way down. roberts will take the pitch. it is in there for a strike, 1- 2. >> buck: before the demotion he gave up nine home runs and since being back, one. that gives you a better idea that he is pitching in the better part of the strike zone. >> gary: brian roberts on a 1- 2. swings and misses. it had some sink on that one. one away. >> buck: carmona in 2007 was 19- 8, and then he just lost his sinking fastball. 88 miles per hour. he took a little bit you have of it an got more dramatic movement. it was out of the reach of brian roberts. >> gary: carmona was 0-1 against the orioles last year. felix pie in the number two
8:16 pm
spot. wieters has got a three-game hit streak going. he continued it last night as he had a 2-5 in the ballgame. he is getting a chance to play the position he first played in the minors at center field. adam jones, the 0-1 delivery. that is off the end of the bat for an 0-2 count. >> buck: pie has done a nice job working off the hitting instructor crowley, not chasing balls in the dirt. as result his average has crept up. >> gary: 0-2 delivery. he got him. inside corner strike. so carmona starts off with a couple of quick k's. >> buck: 0-2 coming right at you. this is a lot of arms an legs and extension through the delivery. he gets that fastball to come back over the inside corner.
8:17 pm
watch the late movement on this fastball. right over the corner. >> gary: he had eight strikeouts in his last start against seattle in a 6-1 win. he has only won three games on the season, one of them came back in april. one of them came in may, and then the win in his last start against seattle. in between there the minor leagues we talked about. the slider is go dog miss outside. nolan reimold batting third. owens got a three-game hit streak. he had a 1-4 in the ballgame last night to keep it alive. 14 consecutive games he has reached base. a career high for him. and the pitch will be taken outside and a 3-0 count. carmona is trying to have a quick inning here. reimold is trying to extend him
8:18 pm
a little bit. 3-0 delivery. taken for a strike, 3 ---3-1. >> buck: we have seen different velocity that he will go back on his fastball, get a little more movement on it and then he will throw the four-seamer with a much higher velocity. >> gary: did he go? yes, he did. the home plate umpire makes the call and carmona takes the count to 3-2. nolan reimold was heading down to first base. >> buck: it had real dramatic movement late. >> gary: 3-2, two down. it is going to be a tough play. peralta's got it and not going to -- oh, got him! a fine play by peralta who had to make the catch in the throw in one motion. dave trembley is coming out to argue it to the naked eye to
8:19 pm
which i had two, it looked like he was safe. dave trembley really going at bob davidson. davidson almost mimicking trembley with the irons -- arms going up in the air there. let's take a look. >> buck: bang, bang at first base. reimold always hustling. peralta's throw. it looked like he was safe. it's... no, not yet. it back that way. it's on. 8:22 pm
ballgame. he is one of those in the lineup trying to earn a spot to be a regular. he has gone 10-30 with a home run and five rbi's during the eight-game streak. >> buck: the indians want him to play every day because he is the guy they got for c.c. sabatthia last year in the tradeline deal with the brewers. >> gary: a highly touted player out of port charlotte, florida. 24 years old. only two seasons in the minors prior to this year. he spent most of the time in the minors this season and now the indians getting a look. here is the 1-1 delivery. berken pitches down low. a runner at second and nobody out. berken here at home, 1-6. the e.r.a. of 5.48 here at camden yards.
8:23 pm
that is the first time he has pitched against the indians, and that pitch is going to miss. it doesn't look like those pitches are missing by much, but they are missing. >> buck: they are missing, and he is in a much better spot and when he is missing, he is missing dunn and that is a step in the rite direction. he just has to adjust his sights a bit. >> gary: a short lead at second base. izturis is holding the runner. that will be fouled back, 3-2. >> buck: laporta has a big hit with two outs last night to keep the top of the ninth alive. he was hitting in the eighth spot. he got a 3-2 fastball from jim johnson and hit a ground ball up the middle and then that set the table for andy marte's two- run home run. >> gary: 3-2. izturis is trying to make sure the second jump isn't too big out there for valbuena. here is the 3-2 delivery.
8:24 pm
valbuena will move up. one down and that will bring up the hero from last night, marte. >> buck: andy marte facing jim johnson. he get as fastball, and then extends through the zone, a two- run fastball, two-run home run with two outs, and leading awful eight innings, the orioles have been great. 44. -- 44-3 now. >> gary: how about the royals, they haven't lost after eight, but, obvious, they haven't had a lead. nevertheless, the infield is drawn in. and the ball in the air to center field. pie a 360 on marte's fly ball. marte is going to get an rbi. value beano will score and that's how you manufacture a run, a double aground ball to move him up and a sac fly to get him in and a 2-0 lead for the indians. >> buck: very difficult when you give up the double the start the inning to keep that
8:25 pm
from scoring. laporta moved into third and andy marte drove him in. >> gary: in his last two at- bats, he has had three rbi's. marte with a dozen runs batted in on the season. and he has played in a whole lot of ballgames. two down now, bases empty. and the pitch will be taken down low. >> buck: you trade victor martinez away, and you're trying to see what you're going to have in the future and who is going to take the majority of the work load. >> gary: he will take the pitch outside. eric wedge, he has a new deal,
8:26 pm
so the players know, and they are showing their stuff in front of the guys. they have to make some decisions next year about their future and how much they play. 2-1 delivery and it is hit into left center field. pie wants it and he's got it. a run in after the lead-off double by value beano and the indians take an early lead. because there's an app for just about anything. only on the iphone.
8:27 pm
now that college is a few years behind me, it seems i've got three times the bills i used to. and they're getting in the way of things i'd like to do. with the money bar, i can move my money around instantly, so when there's more bills than usual, it's no problem. and i use the wish list to put any extra money aside for anything i want. being in control of my money feels good. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high-definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way. >> welcome back to the yard.
8:28 pm
over the next month the orioles are going to be in tune to the manner in which their young players bounce back after making mistakes. last night they got more information about jim johnson. he blew the save and afterwards he was standing at his locker, accountable to the media. he told reporters, hey, i made a mistake. these guys battled, but i'm the one that made a mistake. i'm going to take my lumps an move on. right after that he went into manager dave trembley's office and said skip, tomorrow for the save situation, i want to be the one who has the ball that is what dave trembley iss looking for. i spoke i'm not going to beat myself up. once i do that, i dig myself in with the closer. >> buck: he has to have a short memory and dave trembley
8:29 pm
a home run in 68 and that he 2/3 innings. he has given up seven in 59 and 2/3 inn this year. that will be fouled off by nick markakis. >> buck: quite a turn around obviously and it is kind of strikes inside. and last night during hi- bat, matt laporta after the game said that is the best fastball he has seen. >> gary: cabrera knocks it down but will not have a play. again, hitting against the %%- the ball forcing back towards shortstop. >> can see where he is lined up and he didn't track that ball very well. he is late moving.
8:30 pm
he actually went to his left with his body and idn't go his right. so he was expecting markakis so hit the pull said f the diamond and he didn't really react to the flight of the ball very well. >> gary: it is interesting to see that. that's that cheating we talk about. he was playing the delay -- the way they had lined him up and he moved towards second base before the ball was even thrown. so he was off balance trying to get back the other way. it will be a single. so nick markakis is on with a base hit. melvin mora. melvin has a three-game hit streak. melvin had a 3-4 in the ballgame last night. the orioles down early by a score of 2-0. he is trying to get him back and that sweeping pitch is down low for a ball. 2-0. the o ease watts have continued the pound them out. they have been picking up hits
8:31 pm
here in ballgames, especially at home. they're going to need them against carmona if he is going to witch them in this game the way he has over his last pho starts since being recalled from the minors. melvin mora takes it in the air to center field. markakis will tag. nick will head, and the throw is too strong. he's got to go back. good arm of sizemore, and melvin mora, the fly ball out. one away. mora gave ate ride, but to the deepest part of the ballpark. luke scott comes in with a four- game hit streak. luke had a 1-4 in the ballgame last night getting the start at first base. cleveland rotates the infield
8:32 pm
putting the shift on here. i mean putting the shift on. and he hits into it. and he's got a base hit! markakis had a stop to make sure he didn't get hit by the ball that will be a hard single by scott. two on, one down. >> buck: and against the shift, luke hits it hard enough to get it past valbuena into right field. the second baseman shifted over and he can't make a play and marte didn't bounce off the bag very quickly, and that ball was right between the first baseman and the second baseman. >> gary: so the orioles have only one away and two on. matt wieters will stand in. mat had a 1-4 in the ballgame last night. he continues to up his offensive numbers in about every category batting at .263.
8:33 pm
this is the one he wants to get up with runners in scoring position. inside for a ball. >> buck: last night in the seventh inning, he goes opposite field with the home run. it was a fastball away, and that has been a pretty familiar pattern for matt wieters. all of his home runs have gone to the opposite field. >> gary: matt also with a four- game hit streak. the fastball by carmona is taken down low for a ball. beaters gets ahead on the count, 2-0. 25-year-old right- hander, when he works out of the stretch, the opposition hitting .301, 50 points higher than when he is working out of the wind-up. bishop and we talked about his problems against left-handed hitters and so far it is playing out. two hits in this inning, both left-handers. >> gary: 2-0 delivery on the way. .315 for the lefties, .224 for
8:34 pm
the right-handers. i mean, that's an enormous difference. and nine of the 10 home runs, buck talked about it, have been surrendered have come by left- handers. >> buck: he doesn't have that real good cut breaking ball that can come into left-handers to keep them honest. he needs to have a ball going into them because he has the one that goes away. now everybody have focused on the one that is away. nothing to keep the hitters off of that sinking fastball away. >> gary: 3-0 will be taken. markakis the lead runner. scott on at first. wieters has had a couple of home runs in the month of august. the rbi chances right there. .235, his average on the month and a much better season at home than on the road. 3-1 delivery. left center field. way back near the wall and it is going to take a hop. one run is in.
8:35 pm
scott got a great jump. he'll be held at third. it will be a double and an rbi for matt wieters in a 2-1 ballgame. >> buck: there is that opposite field power we were talking about. he comes through in the first opportunity for the orioles here in the second. great extension. not a bad pitch down and away, but it was a hitter count and he had the count in his favor and he had seen some fastballs away and he drills it right off of the 364 sign in left. by the time they get it back in. luke scott is right at third base and wieters picks up one rbi and he has the orioles in a great situation here, second and third, one down. >> gary: 23 rbi's for matt wieters in the 64 games played in. ty wigginton with two in scoring position and only one out. wigginton fdesignateed hitter, is batting eighth. he takes the slider for a strike. >> buck: the ground ball gets
8:36 pm
you an rbi here. you hit it it up the middle, they're going to be able to score. luke scott, the infield is playing back. even at third base. you see how deep jhonny peralta is at tired as well. >> gary: 0-# count. wigginton played last night and had a 1-3. scott at third and wieters at second. and the 0-1, down to third base. the runner not going. peralta is going to make the throw and gets the out. and the decision made not to run on contact cost the orioles a run. >> buck: he is in between here with luke scott discussing the play. you can see luke never broke toward home on contact. even after the bobble. peralta recovers in time to throw out wigginton. >> gary: that is a run the
8:37 pm
orioles should have had. and izturis, another base hit! coming around is wieters. no, he is going to be sent back. it would have been a collision on that one. so the orioles have tied it up. izturis delivers the rbi single. >> buck: the 10th rbi of the month for caesar izturis. that is a big two-out base hit. first pitch swinging. he got it up around the letters and he hooks it into right. luke scott jogs in and right behind him wieters had a full head of steam coming around, but once he stops him, he throws the ball very well. he has 10 assists from right field and he was right on the money. >> gary: izturis is hitting over .335 with runners in scoring position and two outs. he is one of the best two-out rbi people that the orioles have. and, again, we talked about it during the rain delay, the
8:38 pm
importance of izturis in the field and at the plate this year for the orioles. >> buck: there is nothing like a two-out hit to demoralize the opposition and caesar izturis didn't waste any time. he got a base hit, certainry he picks up his teammates and delivers an puts carmenna in another mess. >> gary: first and third, two down. he had to make some calls down there. fouled away and i think both correctly so. luke scott did not have enough speed to make it in on the play before, and this time sam wells sends wieters. at best it was going to be the collision at the plate because the throw came all the way in right on the third-base line. >> buck: part of the information you want as a third base coach is the speed of your runners. the ample strength of the outfield. and how well they throw. charging in. that ball was hit right at the
8:39 pm
right fielder on line with choo, so he was coming directly toward the plate, and he has a very strong arm. he was pitcher as an amateur, and there were some thoughts he would play much like nick markakis. >> gary: the orioles as a result get two runs. the 0-1 count. fouled back, brian roberts with a big cut. brian since the all-star break hitting .325. he comes into h ballgame second in runs. first in doubles. in the league, a position he has held for much of the season. he has runners at first and third. the first baseman will get that. marte to get the out and valbuena making the throw. the orioles get a couple of runs. four hits, two are left on.
8:40 pm
game tied 2-2.
8:41 pm
>> gary: orioles baseball on masn brought to you by southwest airlinessing book your next trip on southwest.com and by pnc, pnc leading the way. buck martinez, amber theoharis and gary thorne, great to have you with us. the orioles have been involved

in one-run ballgames on the season. they're 14-19 in one-run games. of late the one-run games have continued to pile up, four out of the last five that the orioles have played have been decided by just a run. >> buck: grady sizemore get as two-strike changeup for david hernandez and hits it the opposite way that was his 18th home run of the season last night. >> gary: the 0-1 delivery to him. so sizemore is on. that is the sixth hit batter by berken this year and the lead- off man on for the second of three innings. it guilty him down on the foot and obviously it didn't bother him very much. a switch hitter .306 right-
