2:03 pm
we have heard words like drain and fatigue early in the outing. the club is going to pay attention to the demeanor on the mound. they may pull him 5th or 6th inning at the max, not wanting him in the 7th or 8th, but, jim and buck, it is a tough decision to make, because you want to teach them to go into the 7th or 8th inning. >> jim: all right, thanks, amber, very much. here is andy marte leading off. >> buck: yes. you don't want a pitcher going into a season worn out of hurt. that is the thing with the orioles, the first time he pitched since september. but you need to change the mcs. if somebody is -- mechanics. if somebody is dropping their arm, could suggest fatigue,
2:04 pm
pain and soreness. that is something you really watch for. you don't want them going out there and laboring when they are retired, but the coach is trying to impress upon them, cut down the number of pitches you are throw. if you do that, you will be able to pitch into later in the game. >> jim: with matusz, that is a good point. over the first 5 starts, he averaged 19 pitches perinning. >> buck: that is too many. guys will throw into the 13, the good guys, that is how consistent they are. roy halladay, throwing 15 pitches over time, allowing you to pitch later into the game. >> jim: 2-2. had a huge series. >> buck: everybody is concerned about young pitching.
2:05 pm
they are given four days off, eight days off, looking for signs and fatigue in adjustment of delivery. you don't want to injure of jeopardize any of these young pitchers. >> jim: well matusz through 113 innings in the minor leagues this year, now 25-2/3 with the or less. look here, 1 away in the 3rd inning. >> buck: and teamed up to make it more affordable for the final month of the season. fans can purchase maximum value tickets in the upper level of the ballpark, available on a first come first serve base, purchased online at orals.com at least 24 hours in advance.
2:06 pm
seat -- orioles.com, seating limited. get out and get your tickets. here is luis valbuena, another 2nd baseman . no score, top of the 3rd. and matusz deals and there is a strike in the outside corner, 0- 2. >> that is an interesting avoid-- matt wieters trying to accentuate the start. sometimes the target will creep up just as the pitcher begins to -- pitcher begins to deliver the pitch. 1-2 down. >> jim: 2 strikeout, 2 away. so valbuena retired. >> buck: brian was telling me the other day, he was lying in bed thinking about the way he has pitch indeed the big

leagues and said, you know what, this isn't close to what i did in aa. i am not addressive enough. need to use the fastball more and use my arm on top. certainly appears he is getting into that mindset this afternoon. >> jim: and here is the catcher, ball one. >> you talk about the orioles, -- >> jim: i would guess for andy, it is a dilemma for brian matusz because this is his first season. he has never done it before. >> buck: it is a little challenge but you have to go by what brian tells you and the football you see while he is pitching. this has been a much crisper start to the game. a little more life in the
2:08 pm
fastball and body. >> buck: i think the first few starts it was like he was feeling for the strike zone. today it looks like he is convictions with every pitch. >> jim: beautiful day here at the ballpark. the outfield straight away on toregas, the number 9 batter. and matusz just 22 years old out of cave creek, arizona. 1-2 pitch, curve ball high, 2- 2. and toregas another of the many players on this team that the orioles are getting a first look at. they have made so many changes. 2-2 is right down the middle with a fastball and a call, strike 3. so matusz has three consecutive three up and three
2:09 pm
down innings. wigginton, izturis and matusz coming up for the 3rd. no score. it's... no, not yet. it back that way. it's on. ( ding ) book now at southwest.com.
2:10 pm
 >> jim: orioles baseball on masn brought to you by southwest airlines, and pnc, leading the way. the fans having a good time out of utah street. we were jealous observing utah street. we all wanted to join in. we go to the bottom of the 3rd.

falls into a base hit. gets by choo. wigginton try for second. the throw, safe! just got in ahead of the throw of shin-soo choo. >> buck: well, shin-soo choo got a bad break on that ball. big swing. may have lost it right off the end of the bad. often tiles, the outfielder will freeze and the ball slips underneath the glove. wigginton takes advantage of that and slides just ahead of the throw and 2nd. >> jim: lead-off, double, first hit of the ball game. >> buck: the ball got just underneath the glove of choo, who is a very good outfielder. >> jim: and here is cesar izturis, the orioles trying to get on the board. that is the first base hit in
2:12 pm
this game. and strike, once again, 1-1. >> buck: well n last night's game, the orioles were so effective in the 5th inning with the rain coming down, moeller running wigginton into scoring position, tagged, moved over the 3rd then gave them a lead into 5th. chopper and a foul. >> the orioles have used the sacrificed bunt in each of the last two games. izturis, two night's ago, and moeller last night, the first time all season they have had a sacrificed bunt in back-to-back games. >> jim: and manager dave trembley, possibly trying to get a run by using the sacrifice, manufacture a ran, if you will. matusz pitching well early on. ball and two strikes on izturis. and he got him. down on strike throws izturis, one away.
2:13 pm
so cesar cannot advance wigginton. 2nd base, one down. >> buck: one thing you have be worry of today, as a base runner, is just how challenging fly balls are going to be. you have to anticipate, anything that goes up in the air, both the center fielder and left field will have real problems on those high pop-ups, and as a base runner, you have to anticipate the challenges of catching them, taking an extra base or two. >> jim: brian roberts, you can
2:14 pm
see the green wristband on top of the sweat band, wearing it in honor of dylan popier who gave him it before the game, awareness for the neiman pick disease. he had a blue and green, and he said, which should i wear, and he thought about it and picked that one t green one. so 2-1 the count on brian roberts. and there is a chopper toward 3rd this. is a tough play for carroll. throws on the run, throws beyond the 1st baseman . here is ty wigginton coming to the plate, and he scores! so the orioles get the lead. 2 errors on the lead with the indians. and the birds back on top. >> buck: that was going to be a tough play for carroll. ty wigginton got up the peanut
2:15 pm
butter line. carroll starting at 3rd base, coming in and makes a fine play, but marte can't flag it down and steps ahead of the throw. so. >> jim: so that will be a single for brian roberts and the error on carroll allows wigginton to score, no rbi. and here is a fly out of first step back. fly ball, left center field. he got a lot of it. sizemore back, this ball is gone! into the bullpen for a 2 run
2:16 pm
home run for felix pie! and the or less grab a 2 run in the 3rd. >> buck: felix pie has really come on strong. that pitch is away from him. á3-mile per hour, and he -- 93- mile per hour and he hammers it into the bullpen. i have to give you a tip to terry crowley. he has worked hard with these guys, now he hit a lot of strikes and he is hitting them hard. i tell you, i didn't think this would ever turn it around for him, but he has turned it around cramly. >> jim: so pie dramatically extends his hitting streak to 5 in a row. what a turn around.
2:17 pm
>> buck: terry crowley had confidence that if he could ever get pie to buy into his approach of laying off bad pitches, making the pitcher throw strikes, that pie can could hit to. his credit, he is now seeing the results of his confidence. >> jim: still only one down. and outside there. it has to be a humbling thing when your player has a lot of pride, you are traded in the off-season from someone knows of you, and you come here and don't do well. you have to say maybe there is a way for another approach, and maybe it will be a better approach. so felix pie taking the lessons well. and it is outside, ball 3. >> buck: then, again t problems for masterson is left-handed
2:18 pm
hitters. brian roberts, felix pie, doing the damage here in this inning. >> jim: 3-2 the count as jones fouls it back. so, pie, by the way, this is his 7th home run. >> jim: and jones has been sitting on 19 since august the 5th. he has seven home runs since the all-star break. hitting them fairly regularly, but not as of late. looing at this, 0-2 and works a walk. so adam twice today drawn a wok. 2 allowed by masterson and another base runner on the 1st. >> buck: well, you wouldn't think that masterson would be unnerved by the errors behind him t two error in the this
2:19 pm
inning that contributed to the 3-run inning, but at the same time he is trying to get to know the pitcher a little more. he didn't get him until the july 31st trade from boston. >> jim: he has made a start with the orioles on the year. he was the guy on the mound when the orioles played against boston on patriots day. the orioles probably don't want to remember that game. it was the 11:00 a.m. start and the patriots run. they run the boston marathon and they traditionally play the morning game. the red sox did beat the orioles 12-16789 so, he has seen him on the year. the orioles and red sox play quite a bit, as markakis take
2:20 pm
as strike. 0-1 on markakis. and behind jones. and he gets back. one of the things about masterson, he is allowed 13 steals on the year. caught only 4 on the mound. the orioles look at that and say, look, if you can get a pretty good jump, let's go. >> buck: has a pretty good move against adam jones early on. jones there again, picked it up, shortstop cabrera calling. so, markakis retired. 0-2. 2 down in the 3rd inning . nolan reimold will bat now.
2:21 pm
orioles have three-runs in, one on a error, two on a home run by pie, and here is reimold. no one has hits in 14 of the last 16 games, and again, chases masterson back to first. and masterson now put slowing down his pace to try to upset the timing of jones, it looks like, at 1st. >> buck: he virginia it from time to time. a lot quicker at 1st base than numbers might suggest. i think he gets into a little bit of a rut, and that is when base runners can really have their way with masterson. >> jim: big lead for adam jones off 1st base, and a foul back at the plate.
2:22 pm
and nolan reimold has been really hitting the extra base hits, and result, slugging personal .456, highest percentage in history. >> buck: look at markakis and sheets, all pretty prominent rookies. >> jim: outside, 2-1. adam back to 1st base. what is very impressive with reimold is his approach at the plate, his patience. for a young hitter, he looks over the pitches, very good batting average. 2-1 the count. and inside ball 3. and there is an indication of the patience. he has drawn a walk in six consecutive games, and he is a
2:23 pm
3-1 count. jones runs and it is inside, ball 4. so he has drawn a walk in 7 straight games. 2nd walk in the inning and 3rd in the game for masterson. >> buck: kind of come apart for him after a pretty good two innings. masterson gave up a single, choo committed an error, and 2 run home run, things kind of falling apart for him in the 3rd inning. >> jim: masterson last year as a rocky set a red sox record, made 9 patterns in the post season for boston. the indians getting a young pitcher, still only 24 years old with the power on. also getting pitcher who comes from a winning organization and participated in the post season with the sox. >> buck: the coach always felt
2:24 pm
he could pitch to lefties or righties when he was confident, but when he was tired, he was better with the right handers than left-handerrers. but fran coney used him a lot. >> jim: and base hit to center field! jones will score, easily heading the 3rd is reimold. scott going to 2nd base and an rbi double. so the orioles take it to masterson here in the 3rd, 4-0 lead. >> buck: not a very good formula for the indians and luke scott makes a play, right over the heart of the middle, drills it into center field. adam jones comes in and scores easily. clifford austin wylie goes from 1st to 3 -- wee nolan reimold
2:25 pm
goes 1st to 3rd. >> jim: 7 hits over the last 7 games, and here is nolan reimold, a chains for two more. the -- chance for two more. and matt wieters struck out his first at-bat. fouls, straight back at the plate. and jensen lewis just getting loose in the cleveland bullpen. he just did get up. last thing the manager want to do is get the bullpen up in the 3rd inning , but masterson already has thrown 56 pitches. a little late on that swing. 1-2. >> buck: when masterson gets that ball down, he is tough. whether it is a slider or a sinking fastball. but he has left a few pitches
2:26 pm
up in the zone this inning, pie with the home run, and scott with the base on one hit. >> jim: 1-2, wise. tight, 2-2. >> buck: masterson in his career is 10-10, 7-7 as a starter, 3-3 as a reliever. >> jim: 2-2 to wieters. and a perfect pitch. that ends the inning. but the orioles bat around and score four. two coming in on the home run ball, number 7 for felix pie. 4-0, birds.
2:27 pm
2:28 pm
 >> reporter: back at the ya making the transition for playing 1st base, if you notice, every time luke is in the field, juan will be standing at the far end of the orioles dugout, constantly helping juan with the positions. luke meets with juan and go over reports to decide where they are going to position themselves for every batter, but at some point, luke is going to have to think for himself. a perfect example of a guy who thinks for himself is cesar izturis. he is always in the right position and we see him make so many great defensive play in
2:29 pm
the infield. jim? >> jim: there is juan on the infield. should i move up? no, i will stay here. >> buck: it is difficult to learn a position in the middle of the major league season. it is nice to have the opportunity to play in the spring. >> jim: inside, 2-1. and sizemore, but one of the productive hitters in the american league, and still very young. >> buck: and with 18 home runs, the thing about grady, hurt much of the year, elbow concerns -- >> jim: 2nd base, roberts plays the hop. 1 down in the 4th inning. >> buck: and brian matusz has been terrific in the start. count find the strike zone in the beginning, now he is confident and throwing with a lot of conviction.
2:30 pm
but when a guy is coming at you, pitch count in the inning, good, well maintained, the thing about brian, when he decide to throw a pitch, everything is coming right toward the hitter. >> jim: and jamey carroll, up, takes ball one. >> buck: here is the delivery. you can see how much effort he is putting into it. everything is committed directly toward the target. one thing rick kranitz had his eye on, tendency to land with his front foot open. today his shoulders are much more in line with the strike zone. >> jim: 2-0, take it to a strike. 2-1. matusz has struck out 3 in the first 3 in the 3rd. >> the deepest he has been able to pitch in a game is 5-2/3. >> jim: working here in the 4th
2:31 pm
a tie, 3-1. that was in a loss to the angels here in camden yard on august 15th. so far today, very pitch efficient. 3-1 on carroll. and strike, 3-2. >> buck: that is his bread and butter. we heard him in his conversation rick dempsey talking about the down and away 2 slip-and-fall seemer. >> jim: there is a strikeout. came back from 3-1 to get him, 4 and away in the 4 right inning. >> buck: 3-2 fastball downpour and away, where he has most confident, and strikes out
2:32 pm
jamey carroll. great move, great location. 2 down in the cleveland 4th inning, here is asdrubal cabrera. breaking ball stays inside, 1- 0. cabrera was called out on strikes, his first at-bat, one of the four strikeouts in the game for masterson. >> buck: again, let's really focus on the glove of matt wieters as he is trying to get brian matusz to focus on it and get the location of it, down, down, bottom to have strike zone. and brian matusz, by his own admission, felt like the glove was elevating it as the pitch was being delivered and that pitch follows the glove. that is the bull's eye. >> jim: tie, ball 3. so back-to- back, 3 ball counts. now bob davison just called a
2:33 pm
ball. that is too much. then he went to his mouth after he got the ball back and called ball four. so that is the first base runner of the game because the umpire called ball four. now he is going to come in. >> buck: i appreciate the rules, but now brian is asking, what did i do. >> jim: he has a way of making himself get noticed. so there is the 1st base runner allowed by matusz, coming 2 down in the 4th, again for the 1st time against shin-soo choo. >> buck: good pitch right there to get back into the game again
2:34 pm
and forget about that ball 4. so a first pitch curve ball, getting ahead of choo. and inside with it. misses, 1-1. choo flied out to left feel, his first at-bat. there has only been two ground ball in the game so far, one to roberts and one to scott. >> jim: brian matusz got the ball back. watch that ball comes back to him. goes to the mound on the dirt that. is by rule a ball. oftentimes umpires will say, hey, don't do that again, watch your mound. he was inadvertent and quick, but called ball 4. >> buck: many times don't let the ball go to the mound
2:35 pm
anymore. >> jim: so 1-2 the count on shin-soo choo, with cabrera at 1st and 5, 2-2, big jump, and he steal it is base. >> buck: now here is pitch that ball 4 was called on. and brian, he went right through his tongue, but inadvertent, and something he did very quickly that bob davison called him for. the 2-2 pitch, strike 3. so matusz battles back and gets out of it. well, the 2-out walk, one left, matusz has 5 strikeouts and the orioles have a 4-0 lead
2:36 pm
2:37 pm
2:38 pm
 >> jim: back here with the baltimore orioles and cleveland indians. wigginton got to call, 3-1. when you go through a stretch when they are late on calls, they think they should hit and went in 2 video room. looked at tapes from a year or so ago when he was hitting the ball well. oftentimes you can't see the forest for the trees. look at where your hands are, subtle little movement.
2:39 pm
bounce, foul, nice play by sam. 3-2 on wigginton, birds have a 4-0 lead. and cabrera scoops it up, throws out. that will be an infield base hit for wigginton, and fortunately for masterson, it didn't get too much of his body. >> buck: masterson is really kind of in an awkward position. dramatic but not in time to get wigginton. two hits for ty today. >> jim: and wigginton has a 5 game winning streak going, and masterson back to the stretch. here is cesar izturis. carroll creeps into 3rd. wigginton runs, will it get through? got him at 1st base in a bang, bang play. so the runner does advance as
2:40 pm
they nearly beat it out. one down. >> buck: playing hit-and-run, first pitch after wigginton had the infield hit, good throw off of marte just in time. he goes after it, realizes he can't get it, retreats and valbuena delivers. calls him out, so valbuena gets the out, down to 2nd, wigginton, and the line upturns over. here is rob robber, who -- brian roberts who has singled and scored in the rally in the 3rd inning . line drive to left field. that is a base hit. here comes wigginton! here come -- he is out at the plate! wigginton tried to jar the ball loose. come in feet first, he might
2:41 pm
have had it. he thought he would be tagged, so he within the for the knock down, and he is out at the plate, 2-down. >> buck: the 4-run lead, forceing the young outfielder to make a throw and matt laporta did. you can see matt laporta has the ball right at the bag. wigginton turns and sees a play, goes for the catcher, trying to knock the ball out of his glove, toregas gives with the throw, has the ball out of his glove. if wigginton slides to the outside of the base, he might have been safe, but he saw where the throw was coming and just went after the catcher and couldn't draw it loose from toregas. >> jim: he looked like a full back, trying to make it down for the running back. takes inside, ball 2. leek here is the replay. peeks over his shoulder, knows there is going to be a play and
2:42 pm
trying to jar the ball loose. you saw he was trying to make the plate. goes back to touch it just in case, but toregas held into the ball. >> buck: good throw by matt laporta. he has been impressive here, playing left field. so, 2-0 on pie, with rock down on the first. outside, ball 3. >> jim: pie homered his last at bat. look at these numbers. he has done a nice job. not really pulled the home runs. home run it is opposite field. outside, ball 4, here is the 4- pitch walk t fourth walk issued
2:43 pm
by masterson. >> jim: how many current managers did not play in the major leagues? the ford trivia question to have day. >> buck: well, 10 is probably too high. i am going to say four. what do you say? >> jim: i am counting. >> buck: are you laughing? i am going to say six. >> jim: and the answer is six. how about that. stumped again as jones swings throw it. you are on a role with those trivia questions. >> buck: yes, one in a row. a hot sunday! >> jim: yes. aaron aaron. better than 0- 16789 and the orals with 2 up,
2:44 pm
2 dawn. swing and 0-2. but the good thing about that, you see no after affects from the back problem. it has been a week now since he twitched his back against the white sox in check. he had two walks today, been on base, scored a run, and the big swings showing the back is probably back 100%. >> jim: 2-0 on jones. bounces toward 3rd. fair ball. long throw across and he got him! that is the inning. the orioles get 2 hits and a walk but cannot score. wigginton plowing into toregas and the out at the plate! hey i'm worried about mrs. lowenberg next door. why? i don't know she's wandering around the lobby, yammering about fios tv, internet and phone all for $79.99 a month. she seems crazy.

2:46 pm
 >> jim: the only base runne with a two-out walk, is asdrubal cabrera, ball 4 called
2:47 pm
on a walk by 3rd base umpire bob dais son. left field, first base hit allowed by brian matusz. leading off in the 5th inning. >> jim: so matt laporta will bat now. grabbed it off of 1st base in the 2nd inning. now fouled the other way. 1-1. >> buck: good first pitch change up right there. the guys are charging, sitting on first pitch fastball. matusz and wieters got together
2:48 pm
good right there. >> jim: the fact that it comes here in the 5th inning. >> buck: swing and a miss on two. in his first five big league starts, matusz had averaged but 14 base hits for 9 innings, and the first hit today does not come until the 5th. >> jim: he has been hit hard no question about it. >> buck: whatever it is that turned him around, he found some mcal adjustment. pitching with a lot of # energy today. >> jim: and matt laporta is retired, one away. well, a 5th and final date added.
2:49 pm
 >> jim: swing and a foul to bat of andy marte. >> buck: that is a pretty nice neighborhood out there. >> jim: nice day today to be in the neighborhood. the other day when we were in minnesota and we chatted with nolan reimold, he pointed out to me that he has the oldest of the three outfielders. he is slightly older than markakis, and jones is youngest of the three.
2:50 pm
so, he is actually the oldest of the three. >> buck: it really bodes well with the future of this outfield when you think of nolan reimold the oldest. nick and adam both have their feed on the ground. >> jim: 25. >> buck: yes. from greenville pennsylvania, western pennsylvania, not far from pittsburgh, grew up listening to this ballpark. >> jim: swing by luis valbuena, and matusz ahead, 0-2. >> buck: he said i am not pitching the way i pitch indeed the minors. he said for some reason i got a little defensive. boy, he looks like he is recaptured the aggressiveness
2:51 pm
here today. >> jim: call, strike 3. breaking ball on the inside corner. valbuena doesn't like the call. he is down on strikes. 7 strikeouts for brian matusz. mid 5th, 4-0, o's. on top of it all, we're still trying to put away some money for the future. with the wish list, we can save up for anything we want. and still have enough to cover the day-t0-day. plus, the savings engine helps our money grow. and that's something we need and want. introducing the virtual wallet from pnc, a high definition, online view of your money. pnc. leading the way.

 >> jim: all about learning this level. you mentioned now he was lying around thinking, you know what, i am not the pitcher i was that got me here. the fine line you have to learn, the talent that got them
2:53 pm
here should be good enough to get guys out in this level. >> buck: you are going have command of the strike zone. one thing about it, he talked about being on top of his breaking ball. got the hand back on top of the ball, created a much better break on the curve ball, sharper break on the slider. late and quick on the outside corners. >> jim: and the orioles in this game, opt tuesday insistic. two errors on the inning. when you get those opportunities and the extra bases, you really need to cash in. >> buck: well, it is important now, with 31 games left after today, this club starts to win and push. they will face a much tougher schedule tomorrow when the yankees come into town. you are talking about post season contenders. wrap it up and take advantage of the little improvement you saw in the rotation. >> jim: even though you don't want to go in over the, you

2:56 pm
tight. they work together, talk a lot about the successes and fewers together. i think they -- failures today and they want to turn this organization around. >> jim: and masterson here beginning the 5th inning. >> buck: he has certainly had trouble, inside breaking ball that reimold went right through. >> jim: 2 down. that brings up luke scott. drove in a run with a double his last at-bat. a pass across the mound. gets it to 1 action and masterson has a 3-up, 3-down inning. 4-0, o's. and then if your bag wants to bring one of its little bag friends for company, they charge another $25.
