see frozen on the first pitch breaking ball. >> buck: everybody goes looking for the fastball and when it goes to curve ball, you take it. then he throws one a little quicker on the outside. >> buck: he can pitch. that has been his background since he first went to college, and he has always been characterized as a guy that really understands how to pitch. we haven't seen that yet here until today. now you see he really has a feel of how to utilize his pitches in combination. >> jim: 0-2. >> buck: and the problem he has prior to today's start, was everything was so inconsistent, he kind of had to search for a formula and put pitches together because he really didn't know where they were going. 1-2 on the indians lead off center man. way up there, off the wall, just missed it with his glove!
3:02 pm
sizemore can fly, and he is heading to 3rd. jones went backwards nearing the wall. look at that time wall, look at the ball. that is a triple. >> buck: remember, it is very difficult to see the ball once it hit it is ball. ball kinds of sails at him. the ball hit off the finger of his glove. i continue think he saw it. in the end he didn't really track the ball right into his glove. >> jim: had a hard collision with the wall. will play the infield back with a 4-0 lead. here is carroll, 1-0. carroll playing at 3rd base today. 0-2. that is only the 2in base hit for the indians, triple by
3:03 pm
sizemore. ball 2 inside. jamey carroll one of the veterans on this team, a utility man. bounces back, 2-1. >> buck: here is another look at adam jones in center field as he was trying to track this grady sizemore ball. that ball went off his glove and then he hits hard into that wall. didn't really have a chance to brace himself. you can see he really hit it is wall hard. he has padding, but right behind the padding is a concrete wall. so, last night in his first game back from the back issues, he bangs into the wall in the first inning, then bangs into the wall again. >> jim: 3-1, carroll, fouled back. he keeps grabbing up near his neck area. i hope he is okay. >> buck: yes.
3:04 pm
he took quite a jolt. when you are in there, you don't have time to brace yourself. you kind of run into the wall without having an opportunity to really kind of protect yourself. >> jim: full count on jamey carroll, batting with 1 out and 1 on in the 6th inning. ground ball toward the middle. grady sizemore will score and the indians on the board, and it is a 4-1 game. >> buck: and carroll had the pinch hit rbi in last night's game. same thing here. drives it up the middle and the indians are on the board. now it is important for matusz to kind of gather himself, and he will get help doing that with rick kranitz comes out. the pitching coach comes out and said, shut outs gone, no- hitters gone. now focus on the game. get a two pitch with the seamer, make a double play and
3:05 pm
let's get out of this inning. in the previous five starts the deepest he went was 5-2/3 in a loss on august 15th against the angels. today he has gone 5-/13, trying to get through the inning with a 4-run lead. 7 strikeouts, one walk, and a run on three base hits. and here is asdrubal cabrera. ball one inside. cabrera struck out and walked ball four for matusz going to his mouth. >> buck: good bounce back out right there after carroll got the rbi base hit to come up
3:06 pm
with second out. not out of the woods yet. shin-soo choo handled effectively, 0-2, including his last strike out at bat. >> jim: shin-soo choo was acquired from seattle in a trade and has become an important player on this team. he is just 27 years old. he has been in proball since 2001. took him a long time to make it to the big leagues. left center field, adam jones on the found, won't get it. able to cut it off, fired back into 2nd base, so single sends carroll to 3rd. the indians have two on with two down in the 6th inning, now tying run to the plate.
3:07 pm
>> buck: well hooks can really hit. 0-2 prior to this. adam does a great job of cutting the ball out. look at choo anticipating double. that is the way you run the bases right there. make the throw stop you. don't stadium it is going to be a single. jones comes up 56789 plenty of time to get back. >> jim: you will see the runners at 1st and 3rd. two down for peralta, and there is a fastball, right in there. one out of four with runners in scoring position, the indians four hit in the a game, and three have come this inning. orals 3-7 so far. breaking ball is high. 1-1. meredith now getting loose in the or less pen. >> buck: here is what matusz has to remember, same effort,
3:08 pm
same tempo. don't try to do anything different than you have done all day long. execute the pitches. they work for you all year long. they should work for you this afternoon. >> jim: and a break -- call, strike three. and as peralta goes down, strike out gets matusz out of it. bottom of the 6th. for six months. it's like getting three services for the price of two. so am i the one that's crazy?

>> reporter: welcome back t camden yard, everybody. time to break in. paul bird gets the start for the red sox. right now beating the blue jays in the 6th inning. the giants are within one game now of the rockies for the nl wild card, and jake petey leads against norfolk with tightness in the arm. jim? >> jim: thank you. here is wieters leading off in the 6th.
3:11 pm
and meets looks over the breaking ball for a strike. wieters, wigginton, izturis, the lower third of the battle line up. and over to right center field. falling, falling, falling, sizemore makes a dive inside and can't make the ball. wieters lead you have single. >> buck: ' flairs it right in front of grady sizemore whose dye was a little short of the -- dive was a little short of the mark. he is now on the board with a hit. >> jim: and wigginton on with wieters on at 14th. a lot of room on the right -- 1st. and breaking ball freezes eggs,

outside, 1-0. >> buck: 2 strikeouts in a 1, 2, 3, 5th inning. >> jim: inside with a breaking ball. >> buck: he is riding himself a little here as he slows the orioles of down, only 4 runs in the 3rd inning. it has really been his problem, but other than that, pitched pretty effectively. >> jim: ball 3. so, the indians traded victor mars for the red sox sox and wanted to keep some it have the big wig players. also got back some young pitch

with the phillies. >> buck: and rafael perez, begin to throw. >> jim: already won two games this series. 3-1 on wigginton. >> jim: you missed it. 3-2. orioles scored all 4 run in the 3rd inning, the 1st on afroing error, then a 2 run home run by pie, and a double home run by scott. in the 4th inning they had a chance, but left two on, that ball gets away from catcher, toregas, and down to second goes wieters. wieters in scoring position. the orioles and orioles wives have teamed up with maryland spta to create a special

3:15 pm
3rd base and sees wieters stop. and samuel stops wieters, and sizemore got to the ball very quickly. >> jim: willis how the for another chat as masterson tries to gets the ball back. masterson in this game has had only two 3-up, 3-down innings. he got through the 2nd and 5th in order. spent quite a pitch of time pitching from the stretch. >> buck: i think this is another -- a little bit of a survey to see how masterson is holding up and what he is thinking about here. obviously a ground ball gets him out of the situation, but you are working to a guy that doesn't hit tomato ground ball plays. >> jim: willis is in his 7th season as a pitching coach, but
3:16 pm
still is learning masterson who hash acquired from the red sox. >> buck: 33 pitches in the 3rd inning for masterson when the orioles scored four runs. >> jim: so, here is brian roberts, who has two hits on the day, and takes low. ball one. brian has an infield hit, single to left field, wigginton was gunned down the plate by matt laporta. high fly ball! right center field. tagging is wheater, sizemore getting under. make it is catch. collides with two and they go to 2nd base. so, run back, lead it 5-1. >> buck: you see the two

>> jim: 5-1 game. we go to the 7th. >> buck: matusz to work the 7th inning. he has not pitched 6 complete innings in his major league career. he has just accomplished that and established a new career high with strikeouts with 8. >> jim: here is matt laporta leading off. high fly ball to left. here is pie in the corner, one down, one pitch. buck, with the development of young pitchers, how critical is it for matusz to get this big first out of the way, going deep into the game. the deepist todd was 5-2/3 in particular with what he told you about? >> buck: i think it is a big step in the right direction. all these skills are acquired. it certainly takes time for young player to learn how to pitch deep in the game, dig
3:24 pm
back and gather strength late in the game. i love the way he pitched in the 6th inning with runners at the corners and struck out jhonny peralta. he continued to pitch and use the curve ball for the big strike out. >> jim: and wigginton gobbles it up. gets it across, two men down. >> buck: i think the one thing i would like to see for young pitchers is the ability to walk off the mound with their teeth, whether it is the 7th, or 9th. the feeling of not walking off the mound by yourself where you have to be removed from the inning. the ability to close out innings, no matter what it is, to say okay, i did my job, i finished and i am walking off with my team. >> jim: here is luis valbuena. and he has a big bender for a
3:25 pm
strike. >> jim: pie is there. so brian matusz done it. gotten through 7 innings. fans appreciate with job by the rookie left-hander. been true since the day i made my first dollar. where is that dollar? i got it out to show you... uhh... was it rather old and wrinkly? yeah, you saw it? umm fancy a crisp? geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.

batter's glove. could not do it. getting ready to bat here in the top of the 7th inning. here is brian matusz. and rick kranitz reinforced what they have been able too accomplish in the game and execute. >> buck: brian matusz's execution is a real step. he was so confident coming into the start. the fact he was not high with the arm angle. he had it up all day along. the slider was good, the curve ball was good. his command of the fastball was exceptional. this was a little more like brian matusz pitched in the minor league. pig number. one walk, 8 strikeouts, that is a career high. those are the types of numbers you are looking for. >> jim: so, talking it over with rick kranitz.
3:28 pm
to put it in more perspective, coming into this game over the first five starts, he had allowed 18.3 base runners for 9 innings. 18.3. in this game he allowed 5. that is how you win. keep them off base. congratulations from the catcher. >> buck: boy, they were in sync today. >> jim: so brian matusz, a job well down, as we peer in from the bullpen picnic area. there is eddie out there, looking in other the bullpen. that is a beautiful view from camden yard. and the orioles will come up in the bottom of the second inning and right here in the middle of this gorgeous day.
3:29 pm
adam jones, nick markakis and nolan reimold. jones looking for his first base hit of the day. he has been on base with a couple of walks. got the final out of the 6th inning. and danys baez knew getting lose. getting ready to come out and work the 8th inning. here is a 1-1. >> buck: it is amazing when you look at the difference inthe games. when the starters can get you in there. it changes everything. >> buck: you continue have to wonder what you are going to get the middle relief guys. try to pitch, it is a tied game, simple game. that is a real challenge
3:30 pm
every manager, to try to get into that 7th and 8th inning with your starter, then you are lyrong matc situation when you can pickand challenge you bring relievers in because you have to. adam just got a piece to stay aalive, so the bullpen will be asked to get 6 outs, matuszwaoutstanding fo7 innings. and adam got in the line up last night after missing five games. last night and tonight mbined, couple owalks today and ored a ru. % line drive to left field, softly hit. %- is a foul al just down the line. sounded like he broke $$$$%
3:31 pm
tomorrow you have jeremy guthrie playing, and tuesday and wednesday, ad hernandez goes against aj burnett, and wednesday jason berken against matthews. it is going be a quick education. >> buck: well, you see the pitching match u.p.es, and burnett did not win a game in august to this point against hernandez. that is tuesday, september 1st, and berken, so 15 and 7 for the yankees. >> jim: 1-2 pitch is pounded to shortstop. and asdrubal cabrera will throw on the run and jones gets down.
3:32 pm
do you think aj burnett has already ripped august off his calendar? >> buck: yes. it has been unfortunate too, because they were really gathering momentum. andy pen innocent really pitching well, and java chamberlain at the bottom of the mound. >> jim: and markakis hitless on the day. sizemore is really over shifting toward left center. so, there is a lot of room toward the right center gap. you see grady sizemore, over shifting the other said. >> buck: they will do that on a left-hander against left- hander. when nick is facing a right hander, they expect him to pull a little more.
3:33 pm
>> jim: there is a cue shot toward perez. fires and got him. down to the ground. the momentum took him down, 2- outs. that is a heck of a play, for a left-hander to go to the 3rd baseman foul line. watch how he turns and breaks himself on that back leg, gets a line up on it and takes markakis out on a full strike. really gets a lot on the ball, throws it the are the on the money to marte. >> jim: so, 2, and here is reimold. went too far. didn't check in time. no less than is 0-2. 2 out of 10 on the series.

3:37 pm
>> jim: baez throws a strike to toregas. wyatt toregas the indians catcher today. bounced to 2nd base, brian roberts will play the hop, and gets it to 1st. one down that. looked like a routine hop, but it was a more difficult play because it had the reverse spin on it. that ball was spinning the opposite way before it bounced over. so, there is a groundout for the first out of the 8th, and here is grady sizemore. he tripled and scored in the 6th, 1-3 overall. foul back on 1. >> buck: and baez was really throwing the ball well. to be honest, i am a little surprised he is still here. i thought there would be a
3:38 pm
pennant race calling for danys baez, throwing the ball so well. it seems like there are a lot of teams out there that could use bullpen help. >> jim: the deadline is inching closer to tomorrow at midnight for a playing to make the team eligible if they make potato season. 1-1, fouled away. >> buck: there are a lot of teams with deals in the works. including the minnesota twins. suggestions they have claimed rich harden f the chicago cubs. also t giants have put on a claim on earn kyleman, who showed up their club a little. >> jim: so the cups 9 out in

>> buck: peeve pitched last night as cabrera hits it into right field for a base hit. back-to-back hits after two men down. apparently in one of his rehab outings, he was hit by a batted ball that his pitching elbow. it was kind of an interesting match up because jaker yes tamade one of the starts, and for the white sox triple game charlotte, he had to leave the game. >> buck: he did get hit in a previous start and hoping he would make the start yesterday for the big club, but couldn't could do that. paul bird starts the day with the pons red sox.

perez, rafael wanted it, saved it. here is wieters. the indians are pretty confident that they can turn this around in a hurry, because they have made all these moves, they brought in a lot of real good, young players, and they play in the al central, and they feel because of the chart in that division, they with turn it andnarily quickly and get back in contention in that division. >> certainly one thing in place if you are the manager of the indians is the eric wedge defense. it is exceptional with cabrera and valbuena s. and with choo in center and right, good
