he's in his second season. takes low again, ball 2. the rangers are at 76-59. they have gotten 28-20 since the all star break. back to back three ball counts to start the ining, and moeller is out for a visit with guthrie. >> rick: i think this was one of the thinks that the orioles have really looked for in their catchers, and communication with the pitching staff, and you see moeller kind of recognizes that jeremy guthrie has thrown a couple of pitches that don't seem to fall in sync right now. he's going to go out there and change the tempo of the game a little bit, and i think that's a smart thing to do. >> jim: and guthrie misses high, ball four. there's his first walk. comes with one down in the 5th inning. so guthrie now will go to work

teagarden pops its up. pie charging in from center field with the sunglasses down. felix gets there for the second out. >> rick: the orioles have really improved their minor league system so much over they have last two or three years, that i think you're starting to see a lot more position players come up here. the pitching is starting to get stacked up down there, too. we still have a lot of good young pitchers down there that have had some outstanding seasons. big numbers down there coming out of our pitching staff. that's what the orioles really need more than anything is the pitching prospects and the defense. >> jim: vizquel hits it
3:03 pm
towards the corner. that a foul ball. >> jim: there are just not too many teams in baseball anymore that can do with the boston red sox and yankees can do. whatever they need, they can go out and buy that. every other team realizes they have to develop from within. the orioles themselves are a team that feels that way, too, and they're really starting to do that. you see them big trend changes in baseball, because they're tired of seeing the same teams, we it. >> jim: vizquel flies out. 6-0 birds.

base with a one-out double. it is incredible how quickly major league hitters adjust to mistake pitches. that one hung, and he was on it. >> rick: that's right. he gets lobbed in. we talked earlier about how he's a guy that used to skin as hard as he can, but hen he gets locked in is when he backs off a little bit, drives this ball to the gap in left center field. another double. not unusual for him once he gets if his groove. >> jim: >> so wiggington has two hits, both doubles. he's two out of three. his 26th mull toty hit game. here is jeff fiorentino, who is getting his first start since coming up from aaa, and he's had a perfect day. takes a strike. fiorentino walked with two men down to keep the second inning going, and then scored on moeller's double, and his last at bat, he singled to drive in a run, and came on to score.
3:08 pm
swings through that one, and it's 0-2. >> rick: doing my catcher league duties, jim, you almost have to notice that fiorentino has made some changes, and it tells me something about what's happening in his career. he used to choke the bat, at least three or four inches, and just try to lay the head of the bat on, it now i notice he's down on that knob a little bit, and that's probably why he was in double figures for home runs in aaa this year, starting to hit the ball with more power. >> jim: looks over one, to too tight. blocked by teagarden. 2-2 on fiorentino. >> rick: he's always been a very disciplined hitter at home plate. not a guy that swings a at lot of bad pitches. he really had a good idea of what he's trying to get
3:09 pm
accomplished. he's going with the pitch, but he's driving the ball a lot more. he's really starting to become a good solid major league hitter. i love the open stance like that. so anything middle in, he can pull, not just trying to soft the ball out anymore. >> jim: knocks it foul the other way. fiorentino left the orioles on a waiver claim. he went to cincinnati, and then he went to oakland, and the orioles got him back the same way, by claiming him on waivers. 2-2 with wiggington at second. again, a foul ball. >> rick: little bit unorthodox swing, although it's a good swing from the waist up. the bottom, he tries to get that front foot on the ground as soon as possible. that stabilizes his head, keeps it rout right on the ball, and then really uses the lower half
3:10 pm
of this body well. very quick with the bat short and quick to the ball, to too. >> jim: wiggington at second, orioles trying to had to their lead here in the 5th. and he got him. boy, a good pitch by nippert, as fiorentino couldn't reach it. >> rick: toughest pitch in baseball to hit there. fastball down and away with a lot of movement on it. you see it there, hit looks like a strike right off the bat to fiorentino, has no chance at all on that pitch. you see he took a little off that ball to get more movement. pretty good job on his part. >> jim: here is chad moeller
3:11 pm
whose had a good day. it's a breaking ball for a strike. moeller has hit four in a row, and he he has six rbis since coming back from aaa. he was promoted back to the orioles to become the backup when greg zahn was traded to tampa. too tight, 1-1. nippert has some life on that fastball. >> rick: has some nice movement on it. still likes to try to fall off. i never do like to see umpires -- i mean pitchers that fall off with that head going to first base, like right there. >> jim: he's a big guy. goes 6'8" and 224.
3:12 pm
2-1 on moeller with two down. wiggington at second base president there's a base hit! wiggington will be sent. the slide, out at the plate! no nelson cruz with his 9th out field assist cuts downty runner at to the plate, and that ends the orioles 5th. two hits and one left. cruz perfect to teagarden, and wiggington out to end it.

staring at the other batters box after joe west called strike one. kinsler snapped an 0 for 12 drought with a 4th inning single. lined to center field. there's another base hit. so kinsler is on with his second base hit. texas has two on with only one down. because of their home run potential, this team is never out of of a game regards of the score. 6-0 game, but here cops marlon byrd. >> rick: the next three guys you face in the order have almost 70 home runs between them, that's why you see chad moeller going to the mound right away, and this is beautiful, this is wattth you want to see from your catcher, communicating with jeremy guthrie telling him what we have to to do to get out of this inning. we need a ground ball. let's stay down here. let the defense do their job
3:18 pm
and get the double-play, so don't try to change anything at this point. >> jim: that one misses outside to marlon byrd who is one out of two. see the pitch count by inning for jeremy guthrie. the second inning was the tough inning, that's when texas got two base hits and ended up stranding two. just missed outside. >> rick: okay, now he's starting to try to guide the ball a little bit. this is the kind of delivery that got him in trouble for most of the first half rushing through, just trying to pick that outside corner. just relax and do what 85 been doing so the entire paul game. keep it down, let the ball move, and it will take care of itself. >> jim: byrd with a big healthy cut fouls it back. >> rick: is it going to hurt him right here even if he does give on base hit in this
3:19 pm
situation. the most they could probably get is one run. but you still need to get the ground ball. keep working the ground ball till we get this double-play and we can get him out of the inning. >> jim: 2-1 is fouled back. so guthrie trying to win his 10th game. he won 10 games last year for the orioles. he was 10-12. he would be 10-123-13 with a, we here today. >> rick: this would be a good time for that sinker, force him to go after this ball. stay out of the middle of the plate. that would be the. i for me. don't want to see him go 3-2 here and give the hitter an advantage. here is his innings -- pitchings by innings. that second inning, you were talk about, jim, 26 pitches. that will have an effect later

on in the ball game, but most of them have been around that 10-pitch limit, which is very good. you want to kind of stay under 13 to to 15, right in there for most of your innings, will take you deep into a ball game. >> jim: he has averaged 17 pitches per inning on the year. if you average 15 pitches per inning, that gets you to 105 through 7 innings. 2-2 to byrd is high. looked like he aped that one. 3-2. hendrickson and albers now in the orioles pen. 3-2 the count on marlon byrd. and he fouls that one back.

4:02 pm
>> jim: 1-2 is outside. appears to have a pretty good batting eye. last year he played in 76 games in double a, and 18 in aaa. and this year the full season in double a in the texas lead. 2-2 hit towards third. mora gloves, goes to second, there's the force on german, and the inning ends.

4:08 pm
make it back to back double- digit win seasons. it's harder to win 10 games than you might imagine. jerry would. own the 23rd pitcher in the -- jeremy would become only the 23rd pitcher in the league. 27 starting pitchers at any one time, and only 22 up to this day with 10 or more wins. it's tough to win. in particular because as a starter, there is so much you don't control. ion, you can pitch well and maybe a play isn't made behind you, or maybe you're that guy the staff which guthrie has been, not this year, they have supported him well enough this year, but in the past, run support. there are so many thing toes a starter cannot control in trying to get a winning decision. >> rick: well, how about last year with jeremy guthrie
4:09 pm
leading the ball club in wins with just 10? >> jim: dave trembley looking on. the starters have really pitched very well as of late collectively. the youngsters gain more and more experience. now, guthrie is the one guy out there with any kind or experience -- tough play, and an infield hit. very late in getting over there, and once that ball took the big hop to davis, the race was on. >> rick: he deserved that hit because the he ran hard right out of the batter's box. look at that, second or their to stride, he is full out. he knows he has a chance for a base hit. all to the way through the bag. no chance to get him. good speed. there is another shot at it again. right from the very beginning, he knows he has a shot at it, and he runs hard. that's what i like too about his ball club. i think nolan reimold has had a
4:10 pm
huge impact on this ball club as far as hustle is concerned. he has run hard every single out, every base hit, double, triple, you name it, the game gives you 110% every day. i love this. >> jim: michael aubrey is pinch hitting for reimold, who is 0 for 3. does have an rbi in the game on a sac fly. the chopper hit throw slowly to first. dave list charge and will tag out aubrey for the final out. a collision at first base. pie had an infield hit. o's have a 7-0 lead.

back on track again. find out what it is that makes him start falling off and losing his balance, because this go, oh, my gosh, he could be a closer. he has that good of stuff. >> jim: he came back to the orioles on august the 18th, and had three consecutive just outstanding outings. five innings, no runs allowed, but in his last three outings, he has allowed four earned runs. four-pitch walk begin this inning. there's a strike to cruz. >> rick: we were talking about doing that voting yesterday before the game, the voting. hit two sandbars. -- the boating. hit two sandbars. >> jim: a base hit for cruz. so texas not going quietly, pie has to nobody it down. that hit was blustered. >> rick: that's more than nick markakis has hit today.
4:15 pm
>> jim: so cruz is two out of four. moeller out to change the signs with a runner now at second base. here is chris davis, who has struck out twice and. walked. davis has 64 hits on the year, 28 of those are extra bases. he has only 36 singles. 11 doubles to go with his 17 home runs. fouled back, 0-1. >> rick: he would be a fun guy for me to work with, with the staffs that i got to catch for the orioles, about fiscal you watch him through the course of his swings, wherever he sets his hands, they go back and down, then just upper cuts to the ball. don't let him catch a fastball about middle of the thigh. there to they go, down and a straight-up cut. fees like that, jim, you can pitch them up in the fast zone
4:16 pm
with that good high fastball, and they have a real tough time catching it. and another thing is don't pitch to pena. he is the same way. he even has more of an upper cut than this guy right here. you don't want to mess around down in the zone with hitch too much back to back pitching. up top, you can. >> jim: robbers to second, take this sure out. blalock to third, cruz to second, out in with one counsel. and mickolio get this part out here in the texas 9th inning. the red sox still leading in chicago on the white sox 3-of. boston has the wildcard lead by two games over these rangers. the angels are hoping to go up by 5 and a half in the al west. los angeles leads in kansas city 7-2 now in the bottom of

>> jim: 6'9". >> rick: we have a pretty good basketball team out here if this bullpen alone snoop yeah, we do. pitch misses outside. 2-2. well, back in the day, teams used to have the off- season basketball teams, and they would go around and play charity games, but now everyone scatters. >> rick: until a player snapped his achilles tend machine half, and that was the end of that -- tendon. in half, and that was the ends of that. you take a look at mickolio's delivery again. watch that front to leg. he really closes up, and then there it goes. a little bit -- that really wasn't as bad as i have seen him, but the key do his delivery is keeping his head still. don't go to first base with it. whatever you've got to do to keep the head still, don't close up so much. there it goes.
4:19 pm
>> jim: and he got him! so he goes to the breaking pitch, and teagarden swings over it for the second out. >> rick: you know, the good thing about this pitch is he stayed with it long enough where he really didn't three himself off balance. the bricking ball, perfect position down on the outside corner. that's what you like to see. if he can just wait long enough before he releases the ball. but any release point before you have to, and it really throws him off balance. >> jim: omar vizquel is takes ball one. omar hitless on the day. he's been doing a good job in his reserve role for texas. michael young is out of the line-up with a hamstring pull. that a big loss for these rangers. two of their top hitters not playing in this series.

4:22 pm
for the orioles. that's in just a moment. the orioles shut out the texas rangers 7-0. let's go back to jim and rick. >> jim: all right. tom, thanks very much. let's head downstairs one of the big men at the plate today, ty wiggington is with amber. >> amber: well, ty, the rangers come in here in the middle of the playoff hunt. what does the role of spoiler do to be able to pull out a series win over a team like that? >> i think it's just -- you get the feeling that it's a real important game whenever you're if these situations. the series is tough when you have two teams that aren't really if the race. >> amber: for you, you have come along with the bat to the last couple of weeks. how much has just playing a little more regularly helped? >> jim: >> it helps a lot. if you have a pad day one day, you can get back if there to straighten it out. >> amber: nice to see these call ups. today was jeff fiorentino.
4:23 pm
>> oh, just a great approach at the plate all game long. >> amber: and jeremy guthrie appears to be finningishing up the season strong. >> yeah, think his last few starts have absolutely been outstanding, and whenever guthrie is throwing that good sinker and using the fastball a lot, he always seems to be ahead and doing what he needs to do. >> amber: all right, thanks a lot, ty. >> jim: all right, amber, thank you very much. we invite everybody to join us again on tuesday night. game one of a two-game set against the red sox tuesday at fenway. david hern an connecticut will take the mound against buck hotels. so long from orioles park. today's telecast has been a masn presentation. a lot to talk about in this one. let's head out to o's extra. tom davis and dave johnson.
4:24 pm
welcometoo o's ext- game brought to you by verizon. birds take two out of three. finish the season against texas 5-5. put a little damper on the rangers possible playoff hopes. when you look back at today, what a game by the bottom three in the order ner in the orioles line-up. >> yeah, i think when you look at the line-up, it was a sunday line-up and some guys playing who don't norm toally get a chance to play. they came through. they were the he ones who were really catalysts in this whole thing. we've seen that happen to the oriole this year where they've let the bottom third of then line-up kill them, but today the orioles turned the tide against a pretty good ball club. >> jim: chad moeller went 2 for 4. >> great day. working well with guthrie of course, but with the bat, big time. >> ty wiggington, two doubles
4:25 pm
and three hits. >> yeah, wiggington did a nice job, and of course fiorentino getting a chance to be out there, drives in a run and puts he mark on with be about he's trying to make a mark after being bake if the minor leagues. >> you can tell wearing number 70, he told me to reduce that number don a little bit. >> didn't like to that number. that's not a nice september call-up number. >> the orioles did a great job today. the wind really blowing up here. let's go back up stairs to rick dempsey. when you look back at chad moeller's day, seems like he has hit well since being brought back up. >> he has been solid as a hitter. you know he's going to do a good job back there behind home plate. he's a veteran guy. but as of late, he is really picking up the ball club with some good hitting. fastball out over to the corner today. two men on base. fiorentino got a walk right in
4:26 pm
front of him. scores all the way from first base. he puts the first two runs up on the board, and i think that's all the orioles needed today was to get an early lead. here guthrie finally relaxes. you begin him some runs, and he does a pretty good job at holding everything together. chad mohler today big part of that, not only offensive, but defensively, called a very good game every single type that you saw guthrie get into some trouble. he was out to the mound to communicate with him, and really got him back on track. he's the star of the game today for me. >> rick, with chad moeller doing such a nice job with jeremy guthrie and working him through the latter part of this season, what is it, other than, yeah, we know he communicates, but what else do you see that chad moeller is doing to help jeremy guthrie get through a season where he didn't throw well, but is coming on of late. >> well, there are lets mechanical things. win of them was giving him a target. that target was almost on the ground today. one thing you noticed about jeremy guthrie, he didn't have
4:27 pm
to get too many outs in the air today. i think he only gave up like three or four fly ball outs all day long. everything else was on the ground. that's a key for him, is keep the tempo intact, which he did by communicating with him, but also talking to him with his glove, and i mean by that giving that good low target the in the strike zone. keeping him focused down there. ail day long, though problem for jeremy getting through innings. 5 of the 7 innings today were clean innings, pitched his way out of trouble on the others. but that's to key to have someone back there working with him every single batter, and you saw how well he pitched today on account of it. >> we enjoyed your comments during game as the game progressed, and & enjoy your comments here on the post-game show. alf wades a pleasure working with rick dempsey. the orioles in this game shutting out the texas rangers 7-0. when you look back, it was an interesting game, because it sort of developed, again as we talked about at the bottom part
4:28 pm
of the order, and we have the box score for you, look at the bottom part of the order. you had jeff fiorentino, 2 for 3. and ty wiggington, 3 for 4, two doubles and those guys really contributed immensely today. >> rick: >> they did, and when you take bite the bottom half of the order, we talked about the bottom third, burt go a little more, you have wiggington of course with the two double, and melvin mora contributed with a base hit as well. so that's the key. i think when you look at the tomorrow have the guys at the bottom of the order be able to help your club, and not always rely any that top third or top half, it does allow through other guys to relax. >> interesting thing, also, think is in the last four games that jeremy guthrie has started, chad moeller has been the catcher, and it just seems live moeller is stressing a lot 0 stuff about keeping the i
4:29 pm
ball down to any pitcher that he throws. >> k chad is a veteran guy. look, i'm telling you, as a pitcher, there are certain guys to that you like to throw too. there are certain guys that in the end, when it comes down to it, you would rather throw to day-in and day-out, and for whatever reason, chad moeller, it's not that you don't like the other guys, but for whatever reason, visually and mentally, you work with a certainly guy better than others, and in chad moeller and guthrie can pitch out there like that. you throw them out there every time. time now for the dave trembley press conference. >> well, to beat texas, you know, they have a real good team, you have to make pitches, and that's what guthrie did, he made pitches, he made big pitches. he pitched well. he was down, and he pitched a
4:30 pm
very good game. we had some very good situational at bats. i thought two key ones were fiorentino and andino's walks, and roll the line-up over and get some big hits. nice way to end the home stand and a nice way to win a series against this team that is probably going to be right in it until the end, but they have a very good hitting club, and guthrie had to make some pitches, and he had a real good rhythm, i thought, and maybe in the to 5th, after the long ining there, thought he got a out of sync a little bit, but he got it back. came off the mound and said i feel real strong, and i'm okay, so good game. go ahead. >> do you think guthrie has picked up the tempo a little bit from what he was maybe doing earlier in the year, working a little more quickly? >> i think his delivery is better. i think tempo of the game for him is better. sometimes he does rush, he gets
4:31 pm
off his balance point, but for the most part, think what he has done is he's stayed balanced and gone over his front leg a lot better, and he's not jumping at the hitter. but i would agree with you that his tempo is better. >> before the home stand, you talked about the -- being a spoiler, you know, taking two to out of three from texas, at least maybe shows guys are still in it, still up for games like this. >> well, when you play at home, i think you should, you know, be president to play, and i think we scrapped yesterday, and, you know, think we'll play 27 outs, and it's a nice atmosphere, and it's good to compete against the best teams now. we've played a lot of good ones, and, you know, it was a good rebound after not playing
4:32 pm
so well against the yankees. >> you have seen glimpses here and there of jeremy pitching well, but out in it's four straight quality starts. do you see this as like the best stretch to he's had, and do you portfolio like he's kind of starting -- >> well, this is probably the best stretch he's had his year. last year he had a stretch where he had 10 or 11 quality starts, but inch think this is the best stretch he's had since coming back from the all star break this year, and i think it's because the location of this fast bail has been a lot better. hasn't been pitching up so so much bob is probably one of the best starts he had was in minnesota, he had his breaking pitches. you know, and then last time he pitched, he kept us right in the game and got us done, and against a good line-up, and today was equally as good a line-up. they are a very good fast- hitting club. >> do you think he's kind of close to what he was at some
4:33 pm
point in 2008 now? >> i think he is. you know, think she physically, too. i think he likes to be a routine guy. he's had very good sidelines. i think he's close to where he was. i would like 0 see him run off a few more. that would be good for him and god for us, if he runs off a few more. >> dave, it was only your third shutout of the year, and first you guys have had in more than three morns. ful with aim of these good young pitchers that you have, are you sort of surprised you've had so few. >> well, i guess you would have to give credit to the team they're playing that they're very good hitters, but you've got to do an awful lot of things right to throw a shutout. you have to throw it, catch it, have to make calculate pitches all the time, can't have any letdowns, have to stay away
4:34 pm
from to walks. can't give four-out innings. i don't know, rich is trying to spoil my day here. the guy just tried to pitch a shutout today, and now he's telling me we've only had three all year. well, i'll take three more. i'll tell you that. we have a young pitching staff. we don't have a whole lot of complete games. you know, a lot of our guys don't go deep into games, and they probably won't for the remainder of the season, because we're trying to protect some people, but it's encouraging to see the way guthrie pitched today. very encouraging. >> speaking of keeping the encouraging thing going, you had spoken a little about (inaudible) before the game. >> that was the key at bat in the fame was his walk, i thought. we've southeastern him before. that was a nice match-up, lift against left. i'm sure everybody was wondering why i was doing that today, but he deserved a chance
4:35 pm
to play. he hung in there. we're all happy for him. he's coming off a very good year in trip tole a. he know hoss to handle the bat. and he had a very nice game. he had a very nice game. >> dave, when the subject comes up of possible veteran leader amongst your starting pitchers, since there are so many young pitchers, is jeremy the type of person and player who could fulfill that role? >> he could. he could. you know, he might be reluctant somewhat to do that. he's -- he's rather private. i don't think he says a whole lot unless people ask him. but i think he has something to offer, because, you know, his whole background, he was a high draft pick, and he went through the thing in the minor leagues, highly touted, and kind of stumbled a little bit, the one
4:36 pm
shot he got with cleveland in the big leagues. he's got some experiences that he can refer to. he's pitched in this division now, you know, for three years. so he does have some things that he can share. you know, the other guys are smart enough, they should ask. i think if they ask, he'll offer. but for the most part, i see jeremy as -- you know, he's a heck of a worker. he has a lot of pride. he takes things real to heart when things don't go well for him. he's been a good guy here. been a good guy. when he pitch. s, you know, everybody kind of gets behind him, because they see what he does in between starts, and i think he earns that respect, works his butt off. i'll see you in boston. that's dave trembley after the orioles win over texas 7-0.

we didn't. it's not about every pitch, not necessarily about i at bat, but there are a couple of things each inning normally. >> do you normally go out of your way to make sure you talk with any of the pitchers your working with in between innings, or is it just as needed? >> it's more as needed tip feel like i need to let them go, i let them go. but some guys need to be patted on the back each time, and other guys need to be kicked. it's just a matter of what that guy in particular and that day in particular. >> we don't want to admit the fact you had a pretty good day offensively. and sense you have came back to the orioles, you're like 9 for 21. >> no, that's always a nice plus. they put me in there for the one side, and when you can con tritt any the other, it's nice to be an asset. >> great to see you play.
