>> hi, welcome to espnews. back along with robert flores, i'm j.w. stewart. it's been a strange few days in new york. first serena then roger federer. and tonight it was the yankees and the jays. >> back in the day old yankee stadium was the site of some great boxing matches. tuesday, new yankee stadium got a taste of baseball style pugilism. we check in on the score between the bluejays and yankees. toronto leads 10-4. two outs, bottom of the ninth. the big story happening an inning before. as jesse carlson and jorge posada both ignite a benches clearing brawl. couple of blue jays have been plunked earlier in this game. carlson threw behind posada who later scored and gave a chicken wing, an elbow to carlson, and that's when the benches cleared. as soon as this game goes final. in fact, it's just gone final. that is now a final at yankee stadium. blue jays get the win 10-4.

highlights and definitely some post-game reaction coming up here on espnews. >> mt. meantime, it's mid september. but it might as well bep opening day for diasuke matsuzaka. the mvp of the world baseball classic. diasuke pitching tuesday night for the first time since june 19. he's been on the d.l. with a strained right shoulder. the red sox are giving diasuke four starts to see if he can pitch in october. of course, the red sox need to make the playoffs first. a.l. wildcard leading red sox leading the a.l. west leading angels, and diasuke looked pretty good. six innings of scoreless baseball. he had three hits. only walked three. struck out five . in the eighth inning, pitch three for david ortiz. his 270th career home run as a designated hitter. that is the most all time. breaking the tie that he shared with frank thomas. 4-1 is the final. red sox have won six in a row overall.

nine straight at home. diasuke gets the win in his return from the d.l. the longest outing of the season. >> the top story this half.in bluejays and yankees. here's how it all developed. aaron hill j puts in the eighth. he is the second blue jay batter plunked in this game. vernon wells was the first. home half of the inning. jesse carlson throws behind jorge posada. and posada's like a hey, bro' ham. what gives? and they have some words. both teams get warned. later in the inning, the benches clear kind of. posada's on second. brett garden, good piece of hitting there. singles to right. here comes posada. he scores. he brushes carlson right there. and carlson's like, hey, man. so he chases posada. posada was ejected. then that's when all the fun

0 for 1 in the game so far. steve pierce, a two-run home run. his fourth of the year for the pirates. two of his eight career home runs have come against randy wolf who was in there for the dodgers. this is the last start with his hyper extended elbow. 5-0. hasn't lost since august 1st. right now he and the dodgers are down 3-0. l.a. only holds to one hit right now. >> right now, credit card national pitcher adam wainwright is a front line starter and a cy young candidate. his biggest moments have come as a closer. remember back in 2006, it was wainwright that closed the clinching game in the world series. we'd love for the cardinals to be in a similar spot. with him being the starting pitcher and not the closer. 28th-year-old looking for his 19th win of the season. taking on the marlins. bottom of the fifth. albert pujols with the bases loaded. flyball to left. rick ankiel. slides in safely. and the cardinals have a quick 1-0 lead.

eagles have added michael vick to his 53-had minute roster. because of his two-game suspension, he can't play until september 27th. john clayton on what this move means for vick and the eagles? >> don't read into too much that michael vick is off the exempt list and practicing with the team. it's not affecting the chance that he still is going to be the fourth quarterback in philadelphia. the plan is to get him ready for week three, and try to do specialty plays. that's why they signed jeff garcia. garcia can be the back-up if mcnabb is not going to be able to play and kevin cobb starts sunday. that seems to be the likelihood. the plan now is for cobb to start if mcnabb can't go. and for vick to prepare for week three. that still is a good situation for michael. >> ladainian tomlinson listed day today with a sprained ankle.

he rolled it monday, and was on the sidelines in the chargers game-winning drive. that was capped off by darren sproles scoring a touchdown. bill belichick's patriots linebacker's knee injury is not season ending. in the same game, bills linebacker says he'll be out several weeks with a broken left arm. and roger goodell says players charles grant and will smith won't have to serve their four-game suspensions for violating the nfl's policy on anabolic steroids related substances at the present time. >> since becoming the coach at tennessee, lane kiffin has falsely accused florida of recruiting violations, and declared he'll sing rocky top all night long after the vols beat the gators on saturday. it's gotten to the point where tennessee's interim president has told kiffin to tone it down. in his news conference tuesday, kiffin praised the gators and said he won't turn up the volume on the vols even though they're huge underdogs. don't believe in the

underdog role for motivation. if you're not motivated for this game, something's wrong with you. you know. it's tennessee versus florida. regardless of what the spread is or who is the favorite, who is the underdog, it's a big time match-up, and one that a lot of these kids have watched for years and years as they were growing up. so i would be shocked if either side needs to motivate their players. play. has dominated lately with four in a row. urban has never lost to tennessee. 64 points over the last two years combined. so there's been motivation over there. i don't think that i motivated them. i wasn't here yet. so we know they're going to come to play very hard. they're extremely talented. i look at their defense, the 11 stars, you have 11 nfl players. i would think the most talented played. and probably the best quarterback to play college football. so we're going to have our hands

full. >> if i say nice things, maybe they'll take it easy on us. since urban meyer arrived in gainesville, the gators have dominated the volts, outscoring them by a total aof 73 points. florida has also outgained tennessee by an average of nearly 10 yards per game in those meetings. saturday's espn game between usc and ohio state was the most watched game in the history of the network. freshman matt barkley earned rave reviews saturday. he's earned raves from his coach and this week's opponent. first his coach. >> i thought matt did extremely well in that game. the way he handled everything, and the way he dealt with it, it is much like we expected. but you've still got to go do it, and he did it. more significantly was his mentality during the game. he was in it, talking communicating. i know i've said that a number of times. but a lot of times kids don't communicate real well. he was fine. he was just like he always was

don't do that. all right, moments later, the t benches clear a little bit. but the main event is still to come. both teams got more. later in the inning, posada to second. and he's coming home. brett gardener. his piece of hitting here. as posada crosses the plate, he makes contact with carlson. this time it's carlson who answers the question, what's going on, dude? and that's when the benches clear. derek jeter you can see in the middle of it hey, hey, hey. by then, the benches really clear. here's another look at the contact. posada delivers that wing to carlson. look at the bump on carlson's head. man. minor skirmishes breaking out. equipment was thrown all over the field. posada was ejected before he made contact before the fight.

sox win 4-1. they won six in a row, nine straight at home. diasuke returned from the d.l. his longest outing of the season. peter gammons on the return. >> for diasuke matsuzaka, the return to fenway park seemed very different than the matsuzaka earlier in the season. his fastball is up 90 had-93. he commanded the strike zone with that fastball. had a great breaking ball. stayed ahead of hitters all night, and seemed to be in total command of the angels. now this is very important. because other than timst wakefid who is now hurt, and buchholz, and lester and beckett. the red sox starters for the total of three outs after the sixth inning the entire year. now thest last four games, beckett, buchholz, lester and matsuzaka, consecutive starts. have allowed one run as they prepare for the postseason. >> diasuke's first scoreless start since last september. of his first eight starts, he
