fast. sarah! you're home! (announcer)ú on the nation's fastest 3g network. at&t. >> gary: baltimore last nig the third out of four against tampa bay. chris tillman on the mound against sandy sonnanstine. he had a chance to win the game, but, so did the rains come. and it lasted an hour 40 and zobrist tied it up. matt wieters, the bottom of the ninth, the walk-off homer. the first one ever for the orioles' catcher. mark hendrickson back as a starter, next!
7:01 pm
>> it is the orioles on masn the final of the four-game set. the orioles holding a 103-93 edge aened the chance to win this four-game set if they can pick up the victory tonight. it would be their 17th series win of the season. hi, everybody. i'm gary thorne. for orioles, it would be sweet to come away with 3-4. they still have to play tampa bay down there for four more games coming up on the next road trip, baa victory here at home tonight would even up their record in september. as the o's are vying for a winning september to send them off to the off season. and they get back one of their stars tonight. nolan reimold. having missed a couple of ballgames with the tendon
7:02 pm
bothering him, he is back in the lineup tonight. it will make -- he will make the start in left field. reimold will have some kind of procedure done on that achilles tendon done in the off season. he is in the race for the rookie of the year and probably gordon beckham is the one closest to him, the white sox player. very strong numbers for reimold no matter how you cut it. jim, he has had a great rookie year. >> jim: really out of nowhere. i think if you looked at the orioles minor league, who hit the most home run ? nolan reimold. i didn't know that he was going to be above average left fielder with a good throwing arm. he plays the ball. he reminds me a little of b. jo surhoff who came up as a catcher and learned how to play left field. you look at schierholtz, josh bell, you have brandon ware who just got the carolina player oh the year. so you're looking for young player that are going to come out of nowhere and maybe end up being nolan reimold.
7:03 pm
gary, for a young player, talk about his discipline, but it is amazing. it amazes me as somebody who has gotten hitters out for 20 years. >> gary: it is the time of year as the competition warms up. andino and pie are both going to get starts in the ballgame. they, too, are fighting for positions on this ball club for time to come. >> jim: they where we're going to see michael aubrey, another guy who came off the waiver wire. pie ahorrible april. he sat on the bench when reimold came up, figured it out. andino, when we lost izturis, he played 31 games at a very high level defensively at shortstop. >> gary: they will be in the ballgame tonight. when we come back can the orioles make it 3-4? we're going to find out and we'll be covering the bases. who am i? see if you can identify these current orioles!
7:06 pm
airlines. book your next trip at southwest.com. overcast skies with a lot less breeze than we had at the start of the ballgame last night as the orioles will look to take this one in game four in the final of this set. let's take look another the starting lineup for joe maddon's rays. it will be bartlett, crawford and longoria, scow bris, buehrle and aybar, kapler, navarro and perez. ben zobrist a5-12, three rbi ins this series. >> jim: take a look at our pnc scouting report ton 6'9" mark hendrickson. he is slying right up the road in york, pennsylvania, but not too good numbers as a starter. he had some back issues when he was starting. he went to the bullpen in may and then pitched extremely well. again, his career numbers, actually pitched for tampa bay during the course of his career, 3-4 with an e.r.a. of over five run as game. he has done a marv use job. as you look at the alternatives
7:07 pm
for dave trembley, they go with the veteran. >> gary: so we'll see how the lefty does here, how many innings he gets. obviously up for grabs in this, and dave trembley not really concerned. the pitch will be taken down low for a ball and we are underway. 63 degrees at the start of our ballgame tonight. four degrees lower than it was at the start of last night. 1-0, fouled off. bartlett has had a 4-14 in this series in the lead-off spot for the rays. and joe maddon saying yesterday, as far as he's concerned, bartlett has earned the

double. >> jim: hank aaron's number, 44 doubles this year to go along with 30 home runs. the curve ball just stays up. evan longoria talking before the game, if you get the front foot down, it is easier to slow the ball down. he didn't have any problems slowing that curve ball that stayed up a little bit. >> gary: he is tied with the leaders here. here is ben zobrist with two down, a runner on at second base. that is outside for a ball. he hit a dinger last night. a 3-2 pitch. >> jim: yeah, and just clobbered it. it sailed out of here. you can see jim johnson wasn't happy with it. >> gary: ninth inning, tied the ballgame up that set the stage for matt wieters to end it with his own home run. 1-0 delivery will be taken down low. >> jim: excuse me. go ahead. >> gary: no. >> jim: i was talking about
7:11 pm
zobrist, a right-handed hitter actually hitting much better averagewise and then if you transpose the numbers per at- bat, there's much power from this side, and, of course, he didn't start switch hitting until he was a senior in high school and then in college. >> gary: 2-0 count that will be taken low for a ball. he has made a dramatic improvement coming out of the bullpen as compared to his starts with the -- where the e.r.a. has been so high. it is just he has fund a place even though when he started the season. he wanted to be a starter and was. the bullpen has been much kind tore the e.r.a. 3-0 delivery. it is in there for a strike and it is 3-1. >> jim: probably a couple of factors, number one, the health of the back and, two, you have to do the same thing out of the bullpen as a starter which is to take the hitter one at a time. i think it auto easier when you do it as a bullpenner because you don't project as much.
7:12 pm
>> gary: 3-1 delivery on the way. he gets the count full. 3-2, runner at second base. >> jim: he has been around the block a few times. this is his seventh year, so he knows how to pitch and he cannot throw. he has to pitch. he has to use the curve ball. he has to pitch maybe with his changeup and curve ball. >> gary: 3-2 delivery in the air to center field. pie, and hendrickson out of the inning. a base runner left on and a lack at the o's lineup when we come back. - low fares. - frequent flights, that's what we're known for. - customer service. - low fares. - we're known for a lot of things. - bags fly free. the lowest fares. great pilots too. - customer service. - low fares. we're not saying other airlines are bad; we're just awesome. low fares, customer service, frequent flights, on time performance... bags fly free. come on over here and fly with us. >> gary: the orioles have won four out of their last six ballgames. let's take a look at the starting lineup for the orioles brought to you by southwest airlines. roberts, pie and reimold, markakis, mora and scott. wieters, aubrey and andino with matt wieters, a very big series hitting .500. >> jim: our scouting report on wade davis, another tall youngster, 6'5", a great debut against the tigers as he only gives up a run in seven innings and then against fenway park gave up seven of the quickest runs you have ever seen, but he does have above average stuff and he will pitch to both sides of the plate with his fastball. >> gary: 24 years old and this is his third major league start, second on this road trip. brian roberts will take the first pitch for a strike.
7:15 pm
picking up five hits in this series. 5-11. roberts with the 74 rbi's and closing in on the .290 batting average again. and that's going to miss inside. the count will go to 1-1. roberts the numbers continue to pile up for him as he leads the league with 52. a pitch taken away trying to get to that magic 60 doubles mark by the end of the season. he has a shot at it and he tends to hit them in bunches. it will be fouled back and the count at two balls and two strikes. dei trembley's orioles. 60 wins, 85 losses and 6-7 in the many of september. we have not had a winning month this season, so they can get a victory here, it will move them even as the orioles take a slot at having a better than .500 month of september. >> jim: we have been talking
7:16 pm
about that for really the last 11 years. they play better in september than any other month. not that you want to play poorly early on, but if you do, hope that some of your youngsters get their feet on the ground. andy macphail, the president of baseball operations certainly has talked about that. >> gary: and roberts will foul that one off. davis getting a chance to throw some pitches here. he is from lake wales, florida. the international league is where he spent the season. h e led that league in innings pitched, second in strikeouts, e.r.a. and second in walks. there you see the major league debut that came against the tigers. a run on seven hits a great debut. the fastball outside as he walks brian roberts. >> jim: tampa bay's defense tonight. crawford. upton will get the night off. perez will play center. kapler will be in right field.
7:17 pm
longoria, bartlett and zobrist. aybar over at first base. and then navarro will -- still only 25. it seems like he has been around as a prospect first through the yankees and then it seems like he should be older, but he is only 25 years old behind the plate. >> gary: he has a lot of games already. here is fee hicks pie batting second. roberts at first and nobody out. longoria in at third base. pie will take it up high for a ball. pie with the 1-9 in this series over a longer term, though, hitting .301 in his last 26 ballgames. he's had six home runs in those games, 14 rbi's. he did not show bunt on that first pitch. longoria will back up a step now even with the bag. >> jim: he should be. he doesn't hit second that often, but when you hit in this position, you look at longoria who is playing even with the bag and move back and then he comes in, you're looking for a
7:18 pm
hit in in right field. the pitch, of course strying to run the ball away. hit a ball that you can hit hard. >> gary: pie with two sacrafices, and he has a base hit into the corner. kapler going over to get it. brian roberts on his way to third. kapler will get it in. roberts will be held and the orioles have a threat here in the first inning. >> jim: that's what i'm talking about! you look for a pitch, you get a pitch, and now can the youngster, 24 command it? perfect pitch to hit. right there. aybar who really had a struggle at first base last nightno chance of catching that ball. you have an idea of how close you are when you play first and third in this league. >> gary: well, that will set the stage for nolan reimold. he missed a couple of ballgames with that tendon acting up on him. the first at-bat in this one will be a chance for a couple of rbi's with nobody out and the runners at second and third
7:19 pm
base. and reimold will take it inside for a ball. the numbers for nolan this season, .273 with runners in scoring position. 15 home runs and the 45 rbi's. and a check swing. he went around on it and foul tipped it as well that will even up the count 1-1. >> jim: the approach here, they're playing back on their right side is hit the ball the other way, because if you do, you get a run in and you advance the runner. >> jim: i always talk about situational hitting and nolan has within able to do that on occasion, drive the ball the other way because he has had that kind of plate discipline. >> gary: 1-1 delivery taken outside. davis falls behind on the count. nolan has put in a lot of games here this season. reimold has -- is going to get to.-- the 35 #th at-bat here and this is his 104th game here
7:20 pm
in his rookie season. davis with the 2-1 delivery to him he came back inside and missed with it and the count goes to 3-1. >> jim: that is our point, gary. if you take a young hitter and obviously you want to get the runs in. you want to have a productive at-bat, he took that pitch just off the corner. he is leading the orioles in home runs so far in the month of september. >> gary: 76 strikeouts and 46 walks for nolan. reimold waiting. here is the 3-1 delivery. that's going to load them up and davis, the creator of his own problems here in the fifth inning. >> jim: going back to the process of how he walks him, plate discipline. is he going to miss there? not close. there is a check swing. 1-1. misses outside. watch this pitch. if he doesn't take it, the count goes to 2-2, 3-1. davis thinks he has to make a perfect pitch. the bases are loaded.
7:21 pm
>> gary: the orioles will get nick markakis to the plate. the infield will stay back here to try to get a ground ball for a double play, and surrender a run obviously if they can get the two outs. nick has gone 5-19 with the bases loaded this season. he does have one grand slam on the year. and the orioles, a chance to jump out on tampa bay here in the first. markakis, and he battles it back off the fist. no play. >> jim: a pretty good philosophy. we saw a lot of hitters to go off of guys. that was a pretty good fastball in off of his fist. he usually doesn't chase that pitch early. when you have tired arm syndrome, nick is going through one of the tied bat syndromes that the -- that can change and we have seen it with him. that is not too good there. 3-12 with pitchers you have never faced. >> gary: davis is one of those
7:22 pm
and that is on the outside corner. markakis just turns his head. >> jim: that ball was off the plate. the first three hitters, the call was very good, contrary -- demiro was good last night. his ball is just outside. you can see navarro bring it back three inches. it is tough to hit under those jirkses -- circumstances because now what do you do? swing at anything close. >> gary: bases loaded. roberts, pie and reimold on. once again he fights it off and fouls it back. davis is having a long inning already and he has yet to record an out and, you know, he really and so did the staff wanted him to get off to a start having given up the eight runs and six hits in only two and 2/3 against boston. joe maddon wanted his youngster to come out here and feel a little better about himself early and that hasn't happened yet. 0-2 count again.
7:23 pm
markakis waiting on it. towards third base. longoria has it. they have one. >> jim: did he tag third? >> gary: what was that? did he tag third base? i don't think so. navarro acted as though it was going to be a tag out. i think he thought that the play had been plaid at third base, but there was none. >> jim: he could have come in and tagged the base. it looked like he had plenty of time. longoria, an excellent fielder. come on in another step, but he doesn't do it. so they get the lead runner and keep a run from scoring. a great angle here. curve ball. the first one we have seen. maybe he probably did, if he went a couple of steps, the angle would have been impossible to get the runner at home and then it would have been a tag play. >> gary: that could easily have been a double play. if that throw had been made and if navarro had reallied it was
7:24 pm
going to be a fares at plate, he had a play at first base on nick markakis. but because he thought it was going to be a tag out, he did nub of that. so the orioles have them loaded. pie, reimold and markakis now, and melvin mora. melvin has a four-game hit streak going. he is having a solid september. the pitch is going to come inside. hitting .350 in the month of september. he's had a career of three grand slams and a solid number with the bases loaded, lifetime. davis has got a chance to get out of this now if he can get a ground ball. one ball, one strikeout and one out. melvin fouls that one away again. >> jim: this kid has a good arm. he probably threw too many
7:25 pm
strikes and the game speeded up with him. rand fire, try to throw harder, harder, harder. 94 to 95 miles per hour, and when he did throw a breaking ball, he has only thrown one, able to get markakis to bounce it to third base. >> gary: melvin mora has to protect now with a one ball, two strike count. davis gets it in and a good pitch and mora is a strikeout victim. bases loaded an nobody out and now think ear still loaded and two down. >> jim: if you're going to pick a good time to slow your best slider and make it that type of quality pitch, that is going to fool some people. watch the bottom drop out of this slider. it looks like a fastball. that's ha a slider is supposed to do when thrown well and then slides down and away from melvin mora. >> gary: if davis can get out
