coming up at the bottom of the hour, number nine, tennessee, number six purdue meet for the paradise jam championship. while the virgin island hosts this tournament 6,000 miles away, another toush amount goes on in a different paradise. the maui invitational goes with the early game. vanderbilt is the 24-team facing since nattet and early first half. down by two, a.j. ogilvy, he gets it to go and won. the game tied later early in the half. they get it down low, but rashard bishop, yes, it is going up over everybody. moments later, lynn stephenson misses in transition with nancy gates. he's got it back and the bear cats back there at the break and second half, ogilvy finds jeffrey taylor and he throws it

down and they're trying to build momentum and they're down by nine. later in the half, they're missing it down low and deion dixon. i've got it and won the guard. they have a big man as they take the win. in the opening game from half has corey higgins with the aggressive. they try to set the tone early. colorado finds the three-ball in the corner. casey crawford and then the time it's in transition. win, part of 21-3 colorado run, it is up 11 at the break. gonzaga on the comeback brought it from the corner and the race for three. driving the lane after they make it to 57. >> under a minute to play, they won the drive and it goes to gonzaga as they hold on to win

76-72. you saw this earlier. the consolation game, depaul at st. joseph's. the clock winding down and not a problem for will walker and walker gives depaul a two-point lead and still in the first half, depaul up by eight and nate rogers gets that to go. depaul up by 11 at the three. walker hits the tough jumper and won after walker missed the freethrow. second half depaul up by six and walker once again, he's everywhere and depaul up by eight, but the hawks would fight back to roy bentley. the three pointer in the far corner and later bentley with the results and st. joe's within three. less than a minute remaining. we are tied at 51. devin hill getting it done down low and one. don't forget for a full half hour of highlights from all around the world of sport, check in with the final score.

you were really little or where did it come from? >> you know what? my mentor is the coach at iowa. he said when you leave me, it would be okay to do what we do, but be yourself and that's sort of what you see is basically what you get. >> i hear you were a manager. >> right. >> what was that experience like? did you see a whole different side of the game? >> i was more connected with the players than i was the coaches, but there was no task that was too big or too small whether it be the laundry or doing the floor or being on the scout team or hosting patrick youing on his visit to boston college. you did it all and that's what i've tried to do as a coach. whatever needs to be done, that's what i'm going to do. >> do you feel like a lot of guys come in and i'm sure at every level, and everybody -- >> how did you shape ego when they first come in and try to teach them, all right. we'll do this thing together. >> first of all, if anybody's

going, when we as a team are successful. you as an individual will benefit far more than as you as an individual are successful. we were a good basketball team with good individuals and you telephone them how to play unselfishly. look, the nba guys will recognize you, they'll see it, but they also want to see you win and they also want you to be a team player at this level to help you get to the next level. my job is to see something in the kids that they don't see in themselves. my job is to try to help them each and have every one of them realize their goals without taking away from the team. >> okay. so when you get into all of the blogs and all of these different forms of social media. what do you think about the stuff? it will change the way fans interact with the game because everyone has an opinion now. >> it's, like, you know, coaching is like owning a barbecue restaurant in the sense that every man better have a good barbecue sauce and we've all got opinions on that. same thing with coaching. we've all coached a little bit and we offer opinions on it. i pay more attention to what the

mainstream media is saying. you can't control what folks say. you can't control how you're perceived and you do the best you can and i honestly don't pay attention to that stuff because it would bother me. >> this season, things should be pretty exciting and we have a big set on your team, tyler smith and how's the progression coming along. >> tyler is one of the most productive players in college basketball. tyler is an nba point guard. that's what his position is and yet for me he plays a lot of power forward. we run a point forward. tyler brings the ball down the floor a lot. he will probably lead us in assists for his third straight year. that's very unusual for a power forward. we use them as a matchup and a difficult matchup for people both offensively and defensively. defensively they'll try to post it up and offensively we'll bring them away. >> how did you get them to stick around? >> the way you look at t you go early to go in the first round and going in the first round for

him in the last couple of years wasn't a guaranteed situation. he would have gotten drafted. no question. maybe i'm going to stay at 1010, win championships and get my degree and if i'm done with my senior year and i go to the second round, whatever. but i'm going to try to get this team to get as far as i can go and increase my game and it's stopped. the nba is not about getting into it. it's about staying in it and if you go as a first rounder there's a different slot, there's a different longevity to the second round where there are no guarantees. >> speaking of guarantees. we have lane kiffin in tennessee this year. do you have any for this season? what are the expectations? >> coach kiffin never guaranteed a number of wins and he guaranteed the way they played. that's what i did when i come to tennessee. he's brought great energy, and to be on the same staff with pat summit, lane kiffin is pretty spectacular.

welcome to the beautiful u.s. virgin islands. we are here in st. thomas for the tenth annual paradise jam basketball tournament. today we wanted to get a look at what these guys can do off of the court. we'll hang out with the st. joseph's men's basketball team and do a little snorkeling and see what they can do in the water. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> that's my last game. you can get that.

on their snorkeling trip. now i'm joined by the president of the university of the virgin islands, dr. david hoff. thanks for taking the time for sitting down with us. >> my pleasure. thank you for inviting me. >> my first question is how in the world this university is such a well-kept secret because if i would have known when i was making my decision to come to college, i would have come here. >> well, you can come now. we would love to have you, but you're right. it is a well-kept secret. i am honored to be the fifth president and we are glad to discover this wonderful place and it's more than just the surrounding which is, as you know, outstandingly beautiful, but it's also the quality of the instruction, the quality of the people and there's really no limit to where you can go in the future. >> i got a tour of your facilities and i was blown away by the school of the art. that entire center is so impressive. what are you most proud of? >> i would stop there because i think it is one of the most outstanding amphitheaters in the

country and the way it is constructed. the number of artists that it brings every year, it is the cultural center for the virgin islands and so that is outstanding, but i would also include so many of our curriculum programs from our marine biology program to our nba, our nursing program, r across the board i've been very impressed with what our members are doing and our students. i think we have some outstanding students engaged in undergraduate research that rivals any university in the country. >> this community and this university specifically seems to have embraced the paradise jam. it seems like they're having a lot of fun. what has it been like to have this tournament here. >> it's been exciting and i'm a new president because this is the first time. i've heard so much about it from everyone before i arrived and each after i did and the excitement here is just

contagious. it draws the entire island to this affair and it's a major boost for the university and for the territory and it allows the best-kept secret to be made known nationally. >> i think a lot of you are probably surprised that you have athletics here and you can come from the mainland and play sports here in the virgin islands. i know your basketball team blade a couple of nights ago. tell my about your athletic program. >> we have a very outstanding athletic program and they have universities in puerto rico, but we also play teams throughout the caribbean. we just won our tournament, our basketball team did in st. martins a week ago and we had an outstanding part of paradise jam where we won at the buzzer, but in addition to basketball, volleyball, swimming. we have a very outstanding golf team and we're about to launch a soccer team as well.

so we have both women's and men's basketball. our women's basketball team is very good also. so we have a strong, athletic program. i would love for us to be able to attract more universities from the mainland to come play us and for us to make some trips there as well. >> well, thank you very much for your time. i know you're a basketball guy yourself and played at kansas state and we'll let you get back to this game. it's a good one. >> thank you very much. we enjoyed hoechsting this event and look forward to doing it in the future. >> we're back with more right after this.
