a long-time boston celtic. something to do with the old-school guys. even older-school guys. >> steve: the blind -- >> marques: we'll go with that. >> steve: even a bad player will get a layup occasionally. >> marques: nebraska doing what they need to do to get the man-to-man that the nebraska has shown. you have to knock in the outside shots. they've done a nice job of that. second jump shot of the evening. >> steve: he has six. his career high was 12, against u.c. riverside. a very good three-point shooter. and donte smith, number one. you think we've seen nebraska on pressure? >> marques: they did a nice job their last game. they forced the amount of turnovers.
5:01 pm
they were more of a nuisance with their pressure. you want to get the ball out of donte smith's hands and make marcus simmons the backup ball handler out on the floor. >> steve: good defense by simmons. smith almost picked up his second personal foul. >> marques: i think doc sadler would say they're o fencively, they're struggling now. >> steve: if this kid keeps going, he is feeling pretty good. >> marques: i like the two bigs. they are skilled. diaz, and ubel. >> steve: there's the pressure we were talking about. turnover. and a dunk by diaz. but a turnover by the university of southern california trojans. that's their fifth turnover. we come

southern california, needs nebraska. every athlete has one game they wish they could do over. replay premieres tonight. is there one game or many that you would like to change? >> marques: my freshman year. we lost in double-overtime. that's a game they're going to show tonight. a 7-7 tie in a high school football game like 15 years ago. those guys can get back out there in their mid-30s, not having played football in 15 years. >> steve: couldn't score on monty. come on. >> marques: yeah, yeah. >> steve: was he 5'7"? >> marques: with two inches of lifts in his shoes. >> steve: donte turns it over.
5:05 pm
that's the pressure we were talking about. >> marques: donte smith has got to do a better job. you have three guys on you. don't have your head down dribbling the basketball. look to pass the ball over the top. you have numbers going the other way towards your offensive end. >> steve: second foul on donte smith. henry trying to move on simmons, usc's best individual defender. >> marques: that's the screen going right. he has to get in the screen going to the left. >> steve: richardson. no. good rebound by alex stepheson. he is physical. >> marques: he is a presence. >> steve: lewis. nebraska rotates that defense. >> marques: that ball got into the paint. nothing happening for dwight lewis. to get bailed out at the last
5:06 pm
minute. great stuff defensively from nebraska. >> steve: five for six today. got eight left on the shot clock. vucevic, corner. smith has a three-point shot. when he is setting the basketball, he's on the sideline and turns it over. that's the sixth turnover for the trojans. >> marques: you see diaz, a great job of closing out. so that what appeared to be an open jump shot. donte smith's mind wasn't all that open. where he is on the basketball floor. >> steve: i like usc's defense. i had a chance to watch the practice yesterday. he was talking about defensive awareness and communication. he said, don't stand in the lane and say i dare you to bring it here. get after him. >> marques: he talks about kevin
5:07 pm
o'neill about air space. getting into his comfort zone. >> steve: now, kevin o'neill's trojans defending well against the nebraska cornhuskers. there is doc sadler, coach at nebraska. this is his fourth year with the cornhuskers. he is averaging 21 wins. i mean, he has been schooled by some of the best, like don haskins. >> marques: gillespie at utep. keeps it simple. coach haskins had the practice plan. he had ten things to work on. he said, you have to cover all this stuff. every day at practice. and forget about all the other stuff. >> steve: he asked you yesterday. he said tell me about coach wood
5:08 pm
and tell me what made him great. you said consisty. >> marques: right. consistency as a coach. one of the things that doc sadler. i asked how we got that nickname. i thought he had a masters in science. a masters degree in science. but he was named after stone who played doc on "gunsmoke." who signed his hat. and he became doc after that. >> steve: down low, alex stephenson. a bounce pass, for lewis. that's right toward the big man's feet. >> marques: pressure by
5:09 pm
hankins-cole to deliver in the post, also. >> steve: coming up after our game, we have acc sunday night hoops. a good one coming your way. nevada against north carolina. the tar heels, the national champions. they're battling back this year. but they are 5-1. that is a program that just reloads. they already have some of the top classes coming in. >> marques: local bigs down there. the twins out of mater dei high school. >> steve: nebraska has had two points in the last six minutes. usc has scored six in that stretch. >> marques: usc is a team that prides in the number of potents they've held below 40%. nebraska, in that regard, the past two years, 18th and 22nd nationally. points allowed.
5:10 pm
so, both teams can be stingy when it comes time to score. we talked about keeping the trojans out of the paint. trojans been in the paint about ten times so far in the first half. nebraska wants to limit that number to under 25. six points or fewer in transition. doc sadler thought that would be tough to do. i think nebraska has done a nice job on that. >> steve: jones with the pull-up. he hits. jones. 29-0. >> marques: the nickname bear. bear jones. and anything he gives them in terms of scoring in the defensive zone is going to be solid. >> steve: huskers had four guys limping.
5:11 pm
look at the shot clock. >> marques: keeping the ball out of the point. >> steve: great play by simmons. now, alex stepheson. >> marques: the nullifier. the size of alex stepheson, too much to overcome. >> steve: and the three-point shooting by ryan anderson. and you bring the 6'10", player on the floor, he can be difficult to defend. >> steve: brian anderson. he's got a tough task to get vucevic on the inside. >> steve: donte smith, his third three. third jump shot he's made in this game. for donte, the 25 pounds he's lost, he's looking really springy and spry out here this afternoon. >> steve: one just inside the arc. and two three-pointers.
5:12 pm
eight points in the game. anderson, moves around. inside they go. and that's the way you do it. anderson hits the three. now, he draws the defense. and he is able to make the pass to get inside for his teammate. >> marques: young, slim, ryan anderson, feeding the teammates. nebraska doing a nice job here maintaining a one-point lead.
5:14 pm
>> steve: hardwood challenge. and nebraska has a one-point lead. quincy hankins-coles. >> marques: provided by the young, slim anderson. he will fend off hankins-coles. >> steve: nebraska, leading by one. but donte smith just picked up his third personal foul. they've brought in marqus johnson as his replacement. likely will mean who's playing the point for usc. we may see nebraska full-court pressure. >> steve: marcus simmons has to handle the ball handling. doc sadler said, i'm into the
5:15 pm
grille of marcus simmons. that bothers the pressure. and forcing into a turnover. >> steve: next year, maurice jones, the 5'7", point guard michigan. he averaged last year as a junior. even though usc has infractions over his head, kevin o'neill and his staff did a great job of securing four, quality retruitts. they're top-15 in recruits. >> marques: young man by the name of bryce jones. experts think he will be the top player in the southland. he had to sit out last year because of transfer. he had a chance to watch him as a freshman and sophomore. >> steve: 6'9", curtis washington. and jackson from portland. usc tried because they lost plenty from a year ago. losing daniel hackett, and mark
5:16 pm
derosen. that's 250 assists. >> marques: mo jones. super quick mo jones out of saginaw, michigan. that sounds like he plays basketball. here's the pressure you talked about. jones, all up in the grille of marcus simmons. forces simmons to mishandle the basketball, which leads to a usc turnover. >> steve: this is the hardwood series. the games you'll see, baylor against arizona state. number one kansas at ucla. they fell today. they lost all three games in that tournament in anaheim. >> marques: very respectable showing against butler. really turned that program around. and then, losing to the long
5:17 pm
beach state team. a lot of work to be done for the bruins. >> steve: usc is rebuilding, as well. last year, they went 22-13. they won their first pac-10 title, beating arizona state by three. that was after trailing by 15 at half. blocked by stepheson. good defense. >> marques: converting the pass on the interior. >> steve: right now, nebraska, denying the pass to the interior. making usc work it around the perimeter. a little high-low action there.
5:18 pm
a slam. >> marques: big interior passing to vucevic and alex stepheson. it took ryan anderson, at 6'3", 6'4", about 120 pounds soaking wet. >> steve: usc, really the trojan "d" early in the season. >> marques: the pass to vucevic, showing he can play. not just can score. but a great bounce with a strong finish on the dunk. >> steve: modest pressure by the huskers. kevin o'neill shouting move it. good rebound by alex stepheson. who punches it out to a teammate. and it is a violation. it will be nebraska basketball.
5:19 pm
huskers trailing by one. that's the tenth turnover by usc. smith with four turnovers. and now, three fouls. on the sidelines for the rest of the half. >> marques: speaking of point guard. trojans waiting on mike gerrity. he started out at pepperdine. transferred to charlotte. really adequate, stable, ball handler point guard. will help them with the return to washington. have to hold the fort until that duo gets back. >> steve: ray gallegos in for nebraska. shot clock down to five. anderson tries. great defense again by usc. and the foul will go against anderson. >> marques: thought that marcus simmons was moving. should be allowed to come down
5:20 pm
after you leave the area. seems like marcus simmons kind of got into that spot before anderson had a chance to land. i don't agree with that call. >> steve: got to like the way usc is getting help on defense. >> marques: like the way the bigs are battling on the inside. you know, as a player, just the light comes on. you see a 6'4", guard you. physically inside, brian anderson, trying to get to vucevic. and doc sadler is going to shore that up by bringing hankins-coles, much bigger defender to deal with the big fella from usc, vucevic. >> steve: not many points. good defense today. nebraska, one of the top defensive teams in the nation last year against usc. and the trojans came in shooting just 39% from three-point range. but they made five of the first
5:21 pm
six shots today. >> marques: marcus johnson is not known to be one of the strengths of his game. but donte smith, a nice job. lets us know what he can do after watching him the last three seasons. what they're getting from smith is a bonus at the offensive end. cutdown on the turnovers. they have four already in the ball game in the first half. >> steve: and lewis has to lead them in six three-pointers against arizona last year. and in the tournament, he scored 19 points, 20 points, against boston college and michigan state. big-time player. >> marques: kevin o'neill, as you mentioned, 13 seasons as a college and pro head coach. he understands that to be effective on the perimeter, they've got to continue to pound the basketball inside. nebraska will have to double-team them. have to give up a lot of help against vucevic and stepheson.
5:22 pm
that will open up lewis and jumpers. trying to get the ball inside. no help. >> steve: vucevic can't get the rebound. and the pass is thrown away. it will be nebraska basketball. a usc leads by one with 54.5 seconds. usc had led in the half in all three of their games this year. brandon richardson, the 6'4", sophomore. >> marques: he has to be your guy with nebraska on the floor. >> steve: they get the point, though. and it's jones, the freshman. >> marques: this young man has a finish. he is very capable of averaging between 9 and 12 points. and look at him in the thrill of marcus simmons on defense.
5:23 pm
>> steve: half a second of difference between the shot clock and game difference. usc is trying to get the final shot of the half and take the lead. >> marques: jones playing outside. and almost causes the turnover. >> steve: simmons has to shoot. and misses. and with 0.3 seconds left, it will be nebraska basketball. nebraska will have the basketball with 0.3 seconds left. and you can't get much of a shot off here. >> marques: tip going towards the basket. a nice half by both teams, actually. usc doing a good job of finding the bigs inside. nebraska gets some unexpected bonus offensive contributions. >> steve: we go to halftime. doc sadler taking the lead,

side. zero for six, with four turnovers. >> steve: that's kevin o'neill. nebraska leads 27-26. how are you going on your first side post-up? >> marques: 100% always. second side, not so good. >> steve: your thoughts on the first half. i thought defense was outstanding by both nebraska and usc, this early in the season. >> marques: and defense, is a big reason why diaz, jeter and henry were two for eight from the field. nebraska has to get them involved. and for usc, i am loving what i'm seeing of the two bigs. vucevic did a nice job inside. and alex stepheson also. you have to play those guys together. they present a lot of problems for nebraska. >> steve: there's a reason they call the pac-10 the conference of champion. 166 titles, the last 19 years. including 15 in men's basketball. it will be a great year.

5:41 pm
donte smith, hot early. and then, picked up three fouls and had to come out. he's back in the lineup right now with the basketball. >> marques: eight rebounds for the big guy. he starts the second half. i like that big man tandem of vucevic and alex stepheson on the inside. nebraska able to match their size with ubel and anderson. the pickens won't be so easy. >> steve: trying to set a screen. does. and rolls to the basket. and he drops the basketball. >> marques: that's the one area i'm watching alex stepheson up close for the first time for me. a little better. catch the basketball on the move. get the hands together. he's going to be an unstoppable force in this year's pac-10. >> steve: that was the 11th turnover by usc today. four have been by their panlt guard that played limited
5:42 pm
minutes because of foul trouble. ubel has had a fantastic ball game. now, up against the pac-10 foe, he has ten to lead his team. >> marques: he did a great job working the interior. doc sadler told us how much of a threat he can be as an outside shooter. he's shown us that this afternoon. >> steve: pick and roll again. stepheson looking for the culture. ubel with the defense. donte smith, with seven on the shot clock. ten points now for donte. >> marques: couple of years ago, didn't play his sophomore season. he played his freshman year and averaged 22 points a game. i can see that. didn't see it last year when he played for usc as a transfer. you can see his explosive offensive scoring ability.
5:43 pm
>> steve: backing away is diaz. and o'neill furious with his defense. letting them get too comfortable on the low post. >> marques: he just made a tough, tough shot. >> steve: dwight lewis tried to make a tough shot. but the defense is right in his face for nebraska. jeter is the point guard. he's a physical kid. 6'3", 225. wide receiver at the university of cincinnati. number 34. he looked like a football player there. the fourth foul by smith? yes. and one thing that jumps out at you, look at the free-throw shooting. one for six for nebraska. and only 50% for the trojans. >> marques: atrocious on the part of both teams in the rebounding of vucevic and that's a big factor. we talked about the turnovers. four of those ten by this young man, donte smith, who has to do a better job taking care of the basketball, if he wants to stay
5:44 pm
on the floor. >> steve: so, once again, they'll have to go to a bigger lineup. they brought into the game now, percy miller. good rapper, i understand. see how he plays hoops. >> marques: has a collection of -- i was going to say albums. that would have dated me. cds. the son of the rapper master p. he gets romeo. pressure defensive guy. >> steve: you can hear kevin o'neill shouting at them. >> marques: little romeo, percy miller, you want to take care of the basketball. try not to force things. he can knockdown jumpers about 17, 18 feet. >> steve: there's stepheson again with the putdown. >> marques: you're asking lance jeter, even though he's a big,
5:45 pm
strong young man, to battle against alex stepheson. too much of a requirement for him on the interior. >> steve: they're going to win on defense and rebounds. here's a second look. >> marques: if nebraska is going to win, it has to be improved offensive production from jorge brian diaz. he had a 24-point game this season. he's averaged ten points a game. great skills on the inside. patterned after pau gasol, the current laker. >> steve: there's diaz reaching around, after vucevic had good post position. >> marques: it's the first side post position that kevin o'neill was talking about. and there's the tap-in by alex stepheson. you see him work his way down. you have to do a better job. you know, you're undersized on the weakside rebounding area. you have to battle on the inside. can't just give up and wave the

5:58 pm

6:04 pm
tied at 41-41. inside nine to go. >> marques: this is just the second game back that alex stepheson and marcus johnson have been back in the line for usc. they will get smoother and better in terms of chemistry. sek henry, just his first. brian anderson has gone to the scorer's table. and smith will go back. >> marques: freshman confusion on the part of evan smith. reminds me of his father in a lot of ways. terrific body. 6'7", about 220. but a terrific outside shooter. >> steve: it's aware of what kevin o'neill wants him to do.
6:05 pm
>> marques: their situation of injuries. and have to wait for marcus johnson to become eligible. he had to play 25 minutes in the game. that's way too much to ask for a young man to do. >> steve: jeter, torn apart by simmons. simmons gets his second personal foul. >> marques: getting in air space. they're doing that. a little too aggressive. you really get into the mind and the psyche of the ball handlers, lance jeter, for nebraska. ho is looking to protect the basketball. >> steve: anderson, trying to get it low to diaz. ubel. that's his first miss of the day. he's four for five now. >> marques: turn, right shoulder turn. by ubel to marcus johnson.
6:06 pm
johnson, 6'6", able to affect the shot. much taller basketball player. >> steve: doc sadler said he want to make this an ugly, low-scoring basketball game. they held the opponent to under 60 a game since last year. and the shot clock, marcus. lewis has to force it. instead, he turns it over. ryan anderson will lay it up and in. >> marques: bumbling the basketball, trying to find the handle on it. they had to travel and not give up the basketball. get the shot clock violation. make nebraska earn it, instead of getting a wide-open layup. >> steve: johnson looking to drive every time. that's the place. he has driven into the lane.
6:08 pm
6:09 pm
and being more aggressive attacking the basket overall. marcus johnson not settling for jump shots. going and making things happen. putting his head down. and usc doing a better job of taking care of the ball. ten first half turnovers. only two here in the second half. >> steve: they were protecting the basketball well. today, they suffered ten turnovers in the first half. nebraska has the lead. kevin o'neill knows how important possessions are. particularly when you have a point guard in fall trouble. every possession is precious. we cannot afford to waste one. last year, they had hackett. taj gibson, who had a double-double, seemingly every night. they don't have those guys. >> marques: doing a nice job holding down the four hole for them. that's the level of talent this team is missing from last season. but again, as we keep talking
6:10 pm
about, they still have enough people to be bothersome, xet i, in this season's version of the pac-10. >> steve: johnson, two for seven from the foul line. fouled by ryan anderson. picked up his fourth personal foul on the most important cornhuskers. >> marques: ryan anderson had a tough job. defending vucevic on the outside. alex stepheson. 6'10". >> steve: work on henry. >> marques: he's a leading scorer for nebraska throughout his career, but 12 points a game. >> steve: diaz, nope. trying to bail him out. johnson gets the miss. >> marques: a nice job on the
6:11 pm
inside. like a big statue, trying to shoot over him. >> steve: diaz, shooting to himself. spinning on the baseline. looking at the chipping from about four feet. they're trying to go to diaz. he's doubled. and a turnover by nebraska. usc has a chance to claim the lead, inside six minutes to go. >> marques: he had his first game against chapel state on friday. he was nervous and tired. but he's finding a way to get it done. fighting through the floor. >> steve: anderson, just picked up his fifth foul, reach reaching in on johnson. see if they get the ball to
6:12 pm
alex. but anderson suffering a foul. that's the fifth. they went inside to the big guy. reached with the right arm. >> marques: the first side post-up that kevin really talked about. and the good thing about that is you want to make the attempt to feed the post up. and ryan anderson, getting the last chance of his game. >> steve: he is also a keyboard player, too. >> marques: and a good singer. an excellent musician. he will be heard from again. if it's not in basketball, it will be in the industry. >> steve: it will be on "american idol."
6:13 pm
>> marques: he has a chance to win it. and look at the double-double. big man. 10 and 11. he is going to be a problem in the pac-10. i'm thinking about the bigs around the pac-10 this season and the lack tlofr. he's going to cause some problems this season. >> steve: look at the bigs that the pac-10 has lost recently. the lopez twins. jordan hill. and nebraska with the basketball, tied at 43-43. >> marques: i think it will be ubel or richardson. you have simmons and johnson. the two marcuses, defending sek henry, defending lance jeter. lance's quickness, with simmons and johnson.
6:14 pm
it's good to get an offensive look at the basket. >> steve: steal by hankins-cole. jeter pulls it back out. >> marques: way above the free-throw line. that's a tough angle. you give the defense an advantage. have to get the free-throw line extended. now, give your big man a chance to steal and be effective. >> steve: ubel, no. >> marques: ubel got his hand on his right shoulder. >> steve: time-out called by kevin o'neill. it comes with 4:11 to play. tie game at 43-43.
6:16 pm
>> steve: santa monica bay with the beautiful waters. the famous peer you see in so many movies. we've just been told by the official scorekeeper that ryan anderson had only four fouls. both coaches were told he had four. and then, picked up his fifth. one was wrong. so, the official scorekeeper went over to nebraska and said anderson has not fouled out. he has four fouls. he's back in the game. the coach told him, he has not fouled out. here's lewis getting the ball low. it is picked off by simmons.
6:17 pm
>> marques: offensive foul. it is an offensive foul on the play. we talked about nebraska, priding themselves on keeping them out of the paint. they are looking to pick up the offensive foul when you come into the lane out of control. >> steve: it's almost like we're seeing plays and time-outs called. see them inside two minutes rather than inside four. but this is the time. we're still in november. it's a teaching experience. >> marques: wanted to limit usc. in terms of that in this ball game. and halftime, it was about 11:30. nine-something for diaz, too.
6:18 pm
6:20 pm
>> steve: steve physioc, marques johnson with you at galen center, downtown los angeles. about a half-mile from the skyline you just saw. a beautiful day in southern california. our game reset shows that if there is a held ball, the cornhuskers will have it. the defense is scrambling. we've been tied at 43-43, the last two minutes. >> marques: you're tied at 43-43. marcus simmons came in 0 for 4. and vucevic, averaging 17 points, 0 for 6. for usc, things could be a lot
6:21 pm
worse. >> steve: count the basket. alex stepheson, is in the land of the double-double, in just his second game of the year. >> marques: competitive showings in the pac-10 this season. he moves hankins-cole out of the way. and hankins-cole, is 6'8", 240 pounds. but just no match on the outside. >> steve: time-out called by doc sadler, as his cornhuskers trail by three. both these team really defend well. two of the top defensive teams in the pac-10. they were 12-0, holding teams under 60. and nebraska is just 43. but nebraska likes low-scoring games. they've held their opponents to under 60 in 17 games since the beginning of last year.
6:22 pm
that's the best mark in the big 12. >> marques: and nebraska ranked 18th last year in points allowed offensively. 22nd the year before that. doc sadler, that's the personality and trademark of this nebraska team. now, you're down to 3:22 left. offensively, sek henry, you bring in to this offensively for him. >> steve: you see baylor and arizona state, you and i on thursday. then, friday, colorado and oregon state. and the president's brother-in-law. number one kansas at ucla. and the bruins lost all three games in that anaheim classic. best pressure. it can be used as a recruiting tool. >> marques: here's offense by nebraska. sek henry, tough to ask him to
6:23 pm
be e fktive against marcus simmons. but he's going to try. >> steve: here's henry. no. second attempt, no. hankins-cole. there's a lid on the basket. >> marques: a lid on the basket. great shot battling on the part of nebraska inside. a little move right there. closes out the mid force. and over to the bench. too good of a basketball game to let it be marred by this kind of nonsense. get your emotions under control. >> steve: nebraska has been held scoreless the last five minutes by usc's defense. >> marques: you talked about the lid. hankins-cole can no get the tip-in. and a lot of bod is on top of each other. flailing knees on the inside. two, tough competitors, dwight lewis and henry going at it. but good job by the bigs, diaz
6:24 pm
and vucevic, to restore order. >> steve: doc sadler will bring in ubel. you think we'll see nebraska drive and perhaps kick it to ubel? >> marques: i think you have to. and sek henry again, you look at who is defending whom. and marcus simmons and marcus johnson have done a good job on defense. donte smith in the game, he has been matched up be lance jeter. that's two bigs out there. continuing to take advantage of the fist side post-up look that kevin o'neill stressed at halftime. >> steve: pressure by nebraska, force the turnover. don stay myth back in the game. playing with four fouls. >> marques: you have to pressure donte smith. four first half turnovers. see if he does a good job of handling the basketball under this type of pressure. >> steve: alex stepheson has had
6:25 pm
a big second half. >> steve: high-low action. >> steve: alex posting up. shot clock down to seven. simmons on the drive. no. nebraska has it. >> marques: vucevic could not find a handle on the basketball. dumped that in or elevated. coming in and keeping the ball back in. first, it's an acc test, as miami picks up boston college. then, the national powers collide when kansas battles ucla. finally, villanova looks to build off last year's final four run in a showdown with maryland. the action tips off at 3:00 eastern, 12:00 pacific.
6:26 pm
nebraska has been held scoreless the last 5:30. doc sadler, calling a time-out. what do you expect him to do? >> marques: you expect him to go on anderson's layup after the turnover by dwight lewis. if you're nebraska, you mentioned ubel in the game. i think jeter is a guy also. you know, i looked to flatten out to give him the opportunity. to take advantage of the smith on the outside. >> steve: looking for the screen on ubel. he goes down low to set the screen. vucevic comes on him defensively. they give it to henry. he's doubled. >> marques: you have eight
6:27 pm
seconds. >> steve: jeter. blocked by stepheson. and hankins-cole gets it up and in. >> marques: better plays defensively by stepheson. and what a good interior guy is supposed to do. clean up the garbage. >> steve: nebraska finally scores after six minutes on ice. they've missed nine-straight shots. vucevic with the pick and roll. steal by anderson. gets the basket. >> marques: great defensive play. great pressure on the nebraska guard. forces the turnover from usc. nice job, anderson, the passing lane. a bad decision by lewis.
6:28 pm
and draws the foul by ryan anderson. >> steve: point guard play will be so critical for usc. that's the 11th steal by nebraska. smith picked up four fouls early. even he has suffered four turnovers. now, ryan anderson, trying to give nebraska a two-point lead. 1:06 left. >> marques: just importantly, knocks them down. the free throw. struggled mightily. >> steve: and stepheson here for usc. >> marques: vucevic has struggled big-time. you have to believe he's still capable of coming through in this situation. and dwight lewis, the senior. the leading scorer last season for the usc ball club. has been known to knock down the tough shots. but a catch and shoot open variety. i'm sure sek henry is not going to allow in this possession. >> steve: on the drive. he misses the pull-up.
6:29 pm
there's vucevic. is that his first field goal of the day? yes. he came in averaging 17 and finally scores to tie it up. >> marques: at the right time. the aggressiveness of lewis, the shot at the line. but you blew by three defenders over to your area, which allowed vucevic to work inside for the putback. there's ubel. he's talented the shot. nobody's blocking out nikola vucevic. nobody puts the body on him. that's a bad job weakside, lance jeter and sek henry. could not battle and put up -- a better job of bodying out the big guy. >> steve: almost looked like the aggressive cornhuskers were expecting the ball to hit the rim. >> marques: they were. but again, you've got to at least find that big -- when you see your big guy leave the challenge, even if it hits the rim, it's still going to be
6:30 pm
something. >> steve: vucevic ties the game with 48.4 seconds left. nebraska calls time-out. there's 7 1/2 seconds separating game clock from shot clock. >> marques: you can't work it down to the last shot. i'm of the opinion that you want to take the first good look you get off the bucket. >> steve: coming up after our ball game, we have sunday night hoops. it's nevada, against north carolina. here at the galen center. heck of the ball game. the biggest lead, five? six points? five points, the biggest lead by either team. and anderson will be inbounding the basketball. he'll have lance jeter as his point guard. he'll be covered by donte smith who has four fouls.
6:31 pm
>> marques: on the part of doc sadler. he has jones an offensive-minded player on the floor. has four smalls and one big. different directions to go. and smith against lance jeter. >> steve: jeter. from the baseline. 11.7 left. >> marques: there's jones. nice up. perimeter shooter out on the floor. and a shot came. he has the ball to have the -- he is called bear. bear comes through. not just your average bear. but a three-point shooting bear, knocks down the big tres for nebraska. >> steve: if they get the win, he will get the whole thing.
6:32 pm
>> marques: it's created by lance jeter and his penetration. nice job. nice high screen out there. the three of lance jeter going to the bucket. >> steve: right now, they're look at the replay to see if it was a two or a three. let's check it again. >> marques: looks like. i don't know. looks like that foot could be on the line. >> steve: you want to roll it back, guys. one of the officials came over to watch our monitor. okay. they're checking. dwight lewis -- >> marques: i think the foot's on the line. right there, it looks to me like that right toe is on the line.
6:33 pm
>> steve: dwight is checking with us. our lead official is looking at it. would you like the headset on? >> marques: they're looking for a different angle. they want to relay that to the producer at the other end zone. i play the role of director here courtside. can you frame-by-frame it? >> steve: our three officials have asked us to blow it up. we were watching with them. as close as i could to one of the lead officials. he's been a final four official in the ncaa tournament in the past. >> marques: that's a tough call.
6:34 pm
>> steve: does it have to be inconclusive? >> marques: wouldn't be in their shoes. there's the blowup right there. does that held? >> steve: great job in the truck. does that help? i'm not sure. i don't know if it's conclusive enough to overturn. >> steve: did they call it a two or a three originally? >> marques: they called it a three originally. >> steve: yes. >> marques: to me, too inconclusive to overturn. i mean, that's the definitive angle. is the foot on the line or not? i think it's a three. >> steve: i do, too. >> marques: i see a little air space between the shoe and the three-point line. kevin o'neill getting frustrated with the amount of time it's
6:35 pm
taking. >> steve: this could change things dramatically. a three-point deficit, rather than a two-point deficit. two in the official stats. three on the scoreboard. it is a two in the officials stats. and a three on the scoreboard. >> marques: from the other angle, i thought it was a two-point shot. but that's a three-point shot. they're going to call it a three. >> steve: they are changing the official stats to a three. and it's 51-48, nebraska, with 8.4 seconds left. we've given it every angle. we've blown it up. put it under a microscope. so, here we go. >> marques: you don't have a lot of time to mess around. a lot of teams will go for the quick two and foul quickly. i don't think you have that much time to play with if you're kevin o'neill. >> steve: donte smith. johnson. misses the shot.
6:36 pm
and nebraska knocks off usc in the hardwood series. 51-48. >> marques: nice job by both teams, especially on the defensive end. nice defensive possession by nebraska. up in the air space, up in the comfort zone of all of the usc shooters. they need a three-point shot to tie this ball game up. great defensive sequence. nothing marcus johnson can do but hope for a foul. >> steve: heck of a ball game between two teams that really love to play defense. we saw some defensive excellence today. nebraska, though, wins the ball game. pushes the record to 4-1. and usc falls to 2-2. that's it from the galen center, where the final score is nebraska 51, usc, 48. for our entire crew, thank you very much. tune in next thursday for more college basketball action, as the hardwood series continues
6:38 pm
6:39 pm
sports scene. also, i catch up with legendary wide receiver jerry rice. all of that and more. washington post live presented by the green turtle starts right now. thanks for tuning in to washington post live weekend, presented by the green turtle. a sad start to the week, as a dc icon passed away. ieb poland's death was felt throughout the entire city. as the news broke, we caught up with some of the biggest names and more on his passing. >> reporter: phil, you played for the man, knew him well. what were your thoughts today when you got the news? >> actually i got in my car on the way to the game and i heard on 980 sports, talking about mr. poland and what he had done and when you hear those kind of, that kind of news reporting, you just -- you get gut wrenched and you get that
6:40 pm
feeling and then finally, they made this statement, that he had passed earlier today. and i guess just a slew of memories just goes back that you think about from the first meeting to all of the interactions in between. >> reporter: one of the things that stands out is loyalty. we know that if you were an abe guy, you're an abe guy for life. you played with him for several years, battled injury issues s that what stands out to you, or is there an anecdote, a few memories? what really jumps out about him? >> i guess i would say passionate. he's so passionate about his involvement in the community, everything that he's done, every time one he oh during the nighttime when i'm walking down the street and i see how lit up this whole area is, i think of what mr. pollin did to get the ball rolling. i remember my first two or three years, playing with johnson and wes, and we have
6:41 pm
our practice before the playoffs start. he comes into the practice. he watches the practice. certainly gives words of encouragement. he let's us know that he's with us, and even when things were bad, i mean he would always make sure that he would call some of us or come to practice. he wasn't there all the time. it just seemed like when you needed him, he would show up and try to give you that extra bit of encouragement. let's go to john feinstein with the washington post, a man who knows the family well. john, when you heard the news today, what was the first thing that came to your mind, my man? >> just sadness. i mean we've all known that abe has been sick for a good long while, so it's not a shock in that sense. he was 85. but just sadness, you know, really that he didn't live to
6:42 pm
see the wizards win another title, to get back to the level they were at in the 1970s when they went to the finals three years out of five and one nba title in 1978. even though he doesn't own the caps anymore, i'm sure he was greatly enjoying the revival of the franchise and would have loved to have seen a stanley cup come to washington. he came close in 1998, of course, when the caps made it to the finals before losing to the red wings. >> i know with the media, owners have a difficult relationship. did you get to feel like you knew the man? >> i don't know if i would say i knew the man. i spent time with him. i wrote about him often. i did a lengthy magazine piece on him nears and years ago, and it's interesting because i actually dealt with him first, ivan, when i was covering politics. and he had, you know, the building of the capital center in prince george's county was very controversial. a lot of the politicians i dealt with weren't necessarily
6:43 pm
big fans of abe pollin. some of the stuff i wrote about him, quoting politicians often, wasn't that flattering. so abe and i didn't always have, you know, a buddy-buddy relationship, but i thought he was always very honest whenever i dealt with him and willing to answer questions, and also, and i don't know how much you dealt with him, ivan, because you came to town much later, but i think people would tell you, abe would get in your face if he disagreed with you. he would tell you, i think you were wrong. here's why i think you were wrong. here's why i did what i did. and i always respected that. i've always had respect for people, who if they don't like what you say or something you write, they came up to you and say i disagree, and abe never had a problem doing that. >> mike, you got to know him, wrote a lot about him. take me back to the michael jordan situation. you broke that story about michael jordan being let go of his duties as the front office
6:44 pm
-- was abe-- >> well, i got a call-- >> -- happy with you? >> i got a call from a guy i know. i had been snooping around. i heard things were bad with the wizards, michael wasn't getting along with teammates. there was a big fisher involved and a real wedge between the people that abe hired, susan o mali's and the people that michael hired and they were clashing on all levels. basically michael wanted to bring in his people at some point and take over the organization. he had no use for susan and moted, good people that abe had basically been with forever. abe pollin was about nothing else other than his philanthropy and his team, he was about loyalty. abe pollin was loyal to a fault. so i had been snooping around a little bit, made some calls. one day i get a call and ray guy says michael jordan will be fired on wednesday at a meeting
6:45 pm
with ted leon and abe pollin. of course i said that's crazy. nobody fires michael jordan. he goes, no, it will happen. i proceeded to make some more calls. in fact, i knew before michael jordan was going to be fired. he didn't believe he was going to be fired. ted didn't believe it when he walked into the meeting. i'm sure it wasn't payback for michael's shouting him down at a labor negotiation and treating him like he was, he was just a greedy owner that didn't care about anything but his money and his franchise. i also think he didn't think he was going to be much of a gm. people to this day are split in this town over whether he used michael jordan, whether michael jordan used him. bottom line is, it takes some huts pa to acquire michael jordan. >> turned out as gm, probably the right thing to do. capital center was his baby. he, he created that. then moving downtown with his own money was a financial risk.
6:46 pm
i know living in this city, getting anything done in this city is not easy. getting your garbage picked up is not easy, let alone running a school system, police force, everything that goes on in the system. he got this done and when it's done, how proud was he of what happened to that area? >> you know, certainly it seems like ray no-brainer at this point. but at the time, it was a big risk. there were a number of people, closest advisors, thought he was crazy for doing it. and he, he always had a goal to put an arena downtown. that's originally where he wanted to put the capital center back in the '70s and they couldn't get a deal done. he an opportunity to build a second arena. not many people get a chance to do that. he put it downtown where he wanted to do it, with his own money. that's something people need to remember. there weren't a lot of tax dollars involved in this. but, but the change down there is remarkable. it's basically dc's version of times square. he was certainly proud of that. mrs. pollin is certainly proud
6:47 pm
of that, the entire family is proud of that. it's, it was a big risk, but they took it and they have revitalized this, that part of town in a dramatic way. >> his significance to this area cannot be overstated. avenues man who not only brought two professional teams to the area, but also played a huge role in cleaning up downtown dc. a man who will definitely be missed. abe pollin, gone at the age of 85. up next, i hit the gridiron with one of the greatest wide receivers of all time, jerry rice. that's next from washington post live weekend, presented by the green turtle continues.
6:50 pm
6:51 pm
poor record, and of course injuries. earlier in the week, our panel talked about what the team needs to do to turn things around. what kind of position is this team in? abe's goal when he left was to get another championship. they are a little ways from there. but phil, big picture wise, if these guys are healthy, and that's what we're all hoping, waiting to see, where is this franchise at? do you like where you're headed? do you like flip saunders as head coach? where are we going with this franchise? >> i like the pieces we have. i think right now things aren't clicking very well. obviously don't like the record. >> no. >> but, but the pieces are there. it's a matter of getting healthy. i think mike miller is such a big part of this, the success of this team. i mean he's -- i think flip calls him the facilitator. plus, he's a versatile player at 6' 8. if he gets switched to a big forward, he can handle
6:52 pm
himself with a guard, say like gilbert that's 6' 3. they got to get it together. they have the pieces. you got your bigs playing well. i mean andre and brenden have been the most consistent players all year. >> last night mcgee with a career high six blocks, 5 in 9 minutes. check out the broadcast, he's, he's oozing with talent. they have interesting pieces, but once again, the question fans wonder, when are they going to stay healthy and pull it together to make a playoff run? >> we always seem to be waiting on that. feeling way around the new system -- he knows what his role is in this offensive system. i think phil brought up a great point about mike miller. i've been really impressed. obviously has a representation
6:53 pm
as -- reputation as a shooter. when things go through him, good things were happening. now he's down with the injury. so again, we're waiting for all the pieces to be on the court together. we're waiting to see if they can fit together. we haven't seen it happen yet. it's early in the season now, but early has a way of getting late pretty quickly. if you build yourself this kind of hole, they are digging the kind of hole it, can be very difficult to come back from. not just in terms of the playoffs, but defeating and who you have to face early in the playoffs. >> for years, abe was slapped with a couple labels. people would call him cheap, he didn't want to invest the way it needs to win. put 100 million into gilbert, butler's out of a $50 million contract, tied up big money in those guys. paying the luxury tax this year, he went and got flip saunders and paid the going
6:54 pm
rate for a top notch coach. at what point, is it trade deadline this year, does he have to think about breaking up the big three if it's not clicking? >> that's a huge if. if it's not clicking, then maybe you consider it. i talked to you before the season and you told me you had the wizards had a chance to be a surprise team. i thought you were crazy, but after seeing them play, covered the nets game, if they could play like that every night, they have a chance to be one of the top four seeds. [ indiscernible ] >> they have all been very impressive, road wins in dallas and a cleveland game. >> absolutely. they have the scoring. they have the inside presence. they have the depth. they have the coaching and they have all of those pieces you look at when it comes to crunch time and the playoffs, that are going to get you far. getting healthy, big thing. we see it every year. >> you sit there courtside, i did for four years, i can't figure out where gilbert's head is at from night to night. can't figure him out. do you have a grasp? >> he's still not the player
6:55 pm
probably more mental than physically. when you come back, i mean i was out just a year. i had back surgery, and i just didn't have the confidence. i didn't react quick enough, but there was a lot of thinking. >> you were way down -- [ laughter ] >> weighing down my back. >> weighed down by the baggy shorts, i know that! [ laughter ] >> we had the short shorts then. [ laughter ] >> see what happens. check this guy out, one of the best. you guys do a great job calling the games, back in action this weekend. keep it rolling, wizards. great to have antione jamison back. the week is finally over. you still have one last chance to check out the best of the week. the dvr rewind is next, after this.

welcome back. next week on the show, we have the wise guy, mike wise. doc walker joins us to break down the redskins-eagles, plus former redskins gm charlie castle, looking at what moves the skins need to make to finish the season off strong. all of that and more on washington post live presented by the green turtle sports bar and grill. monday through friday at 5:00, again at 11:30, only on comcast sportsnet. now, before we go, take a look back at the week that was on dvr rewind. the loss to the cowboys, i didn't expect them to win the game anyway. >> when the redskins came to town, we just slaughtered them. 7-6 in the last minute!
