hard to defend also. kelley cain has to be smarter. there's no reason. in fact, appel's not even facing the basket. she's not a scoring threat. you don't want to wage fouls out there away from the basket. >> mary: would you just play off her a step or two and maybe give her the foul line jumper instead of trying to body up on her? >> lisa: you have to respect the fact that appel can't shoot that jumper. >> jim: stanford working the triangle in the corner. hones again. 0 for 6 from three. how about glory johnson getting high in the air to pull that one down? >> lisa: glory johnson is an amazing athlete. she's done so well. there you have kelley cain pressing her teammate underneath getting that rebound. >> mary: it's always a little scary when you see that. >> jim: a little attitude. she put that left elbow out. pedersen. going back to the basket. and here comes kayla pedersen. >> mary: bjorklund on a baseline drive, that's a guard versus a 6'4" converted post player.

7:32 pm
a nice job establishing herself. but when she goes in, that's definitely a foul with cain reaching across her body. she didn't complain and came up with a big block defensively. >> mary: now we're seeing tennessee with 1-2-2. she's trying to get a steal. >> jim: tennessee half-court trap. appel. the freshman. you could say that's the biggest basket of her career, but she's only been here a couple months. >> mary: from missoula, montana, high expectations. she's going to be a great one as well. >> jim: the head men's coach at the university of montana. >> lisa: look at this fastbreak. you see who's first, jayne appel down the floor. >> jim: for three on the kickout. and that is stanford transition basketball. and for the first time today, 7,000 back on their feet. >> lisa: jayne appel really caused that basket because she ran the floor and made the

>> jim: tennessee began the game 3 for 3 from the field. since then, 2 for 17. and that's leading to transition baskets for stanford. >> lisa: notice on the miss, jayne appel reacts to the miss. and she starts to sprint the floor. when she sprints the floor, that makes bjorklund stay in which really opened up the court for j.j. hones. one thing about the post player running rim to rim causes the defense to shrink, and that also will help contribute to stanford trying to get more three-point shots off. >> mary: you talked about cain trying to run with jayne appel, she wasn't even to half-court by the time appel was in the offensive zone. hey, you can't play dodge and fake when you've got a great shooter in three-point land. >> jim: you could almost call it a draw. cain, four points, four rebounds. jayne appel, four points, four rebounds. williams into the game for tennessee. williams, the freshman from clarksville, tennessee, and is a terrific player. they call her miko. well played by kelley cain.

freshman, who took the charge on tinkle. >> mary: you get the feeling jayne appel is starting to catch her breath here. >> jim: i think she's getting angry. here she is going to the basket. rolls off. glory johnson, backside board. >> mary: you were talking about lisa. >> lisa: there's that baseline cut that really gives jayne appel that opening that she needs to go middle. that's usually her sweet spot. >> jim: just under six minutes to play in the first half. stanford, number two, tennessee, number three. cain in the middle and appel met her there. third block for jayne appel. williams just lost the handle. under mild pressure. >> mary: we just don't often see at the college level on the women's side two post players of this size and this ability just battling it out one on one. one gets position, then once you get the ball, trying to find a way to score. >> lisa: mary, i'm loving this.

i want to play. watching these post players and the fact that they're so smart, they have really good footwork and using every possession. doan low appel got her body on it. posts it up and wants it. the other thing, they're both good passers. you really have to make sure on defense. >> jim: pohlen from the corner. >> mary: it's like christmas. you know it's going to happen. stanford's going to start knocking down threes. >> jim: it was just a matter of time before pedersen and pohlen got involved. >> mary: and it's the trigger pass. look at the pass from appel. the kickout when she gets some pinch on that, and you just park yourself. the great passing of jayne appel. kick corner. we've talked about jayne appel for so many years as the water polo player over across the hill about an hour from here. it's almost as if sometimes she's got eyes behind her back. >> lisa: the funny thing about jayne appel, she's coached by my
